    In the 50's, when I was a kid, I saw Philly Joe at Birdland playing with Sonny Rollins Trio. Have forgetten who played base. Had never heard (will never hear) anything like it. Still wowed to this day.

    Good history lesson ! I love all the old timers,but Philly Joe is my favorite. His drumming with Miles was exciting, the feel and phrasing. I have his solo work on CD as well. If i had to pick one favorite drummer out of all genres,it would be Philly !

    Superb video! Just discovered you. Will definitely be back for more. It's great to really study the masters. I'm currently digging Fela Kuti's drummer, Tony Allen. But watching this reminds me of my teen years, listening to the jazz of the '40s and 50s, Monk and Miles especially. Thanks Q!

    Awesome video. This channel is dope!! This dude is the real deal. Wish I had this when I first started learning jazz drums, kids these days don't know how lucky they are.
    I was up in the middle of the night making vhs recordings of jazz gigs from obscure satellite channels back when I started!

    Welcome back! Glad for more great lessons. Philly played a track on "someday my Prince will come" could be wrong, 1958 was milestones and an album called porgy and bess which I've not listened too.
