Interestingly I thought the Dominant punched out the sound better than the other two. I have tried all three myself. I found the gold sounded great initially but lost its flavor relatively quickly. I’m tending to use the Infeld Pi’s more often as they work well with my violin and seem to last longer. To my ear, the gold does not sound $64 better! Currently went back to Evah Pirazzi and great at first, now starting to decline after about 6 weeks.
I also use Evah Pirazzi strings on my humble violin, which make a Chinese made fiddle sound like an Italian one! Thanks for sharing, Best wishes :) PS: the silver G String sounds better ;)
OMG, GOLD by a mile, maybe a light year. The silver sounds like my overly bright inexpensive but nice looking violins made in a certain Asian country (I have several of them). Thank you for making this video, and making it with high quality sound, and for the explanation of what you had to do on the Dominant string. I was thinking it sounds like the silver, but then you explained how much work you had to do. I have one violin with a set of dominants, and I can relate to that fading unless one is very careful on all of the strings. It is my first time to try the dominants, and I was a bit disappointed. Needless to say. Sometimes the brightness of the Evah Pirazzi is hard to deal with, but I have never tried the gold, and needless to say, I'm going to order the gold with the gold G immediately! Thank you. Very interesting. You can certainly hear the difference. When (if) I ever reach the giddy heights of Grade 5, I might treat myself to a $35 g string. In the meantime I'll just have to stick with the Dominants. Can I suggest a video comparing student level strings? That might well be useful for more of us.

I've been using Dominant strings for over 40 years so I've gotten very comfortable with their response and timbre. The others you played sounded fine. I think if you could record the comparison using a professional quality ribbon mic in an acoustically neutral room it would be easier to hear the difference. Also, the string is just part of the tone production. I have Dominants on my 3 main violins, and of course they all sound and respond differently. Thank you for the video.
Hello. Very interesting comparision. I prefer the second string. The gold Eva P. G string gives a warm but old fashioned sound. The silver Dominant gives sometimes a weak sound. I think that the more "actual" sound, warm but also light and clear, in comparision, for this piece of music, is the Gold Silver Eva P. G string.
I liked the silver over the gold in the piano room by a hair. Gold was darker, but I liked the tightness and prescience of the silver. However, in the next segment, I couldn’t tell much of a difference between the two. I have played dominants for years until switching to Il Cannone mediums, and I know exactly what your talking about with the Dominant G. Too much tension to get a good sound in the upper registers.

Or ... you could buy two full sets of Tonicas for the price of the gold G. I think it all depends on the match with your fiddle. On a neutral violin the Tonicas can be a good as anything, and half the concert pros on the planet use the Dominant, which is very similar. I think there's a sense that if you pay more you're getting a better string but it doesn't really follow - it's all about the match with your fiddle, your bow and your sound production technique.
Eva Pirazzi silver wound has a brighter and slightly clearer sound than the gold wound. I like the sound from the silver wound better. And Thomastik Dominant? Well, it's a good student string but what's to like?

The silver one, as you said sounded clearer and the gold a little richer/grittier. I've always been a fan of clean vibrant strings, but again it's a thing of preference. My personal opinion is that the silver Evah suits best your general playstyle and the Gold would be more for some specific pieces you want to add that richness.
The silver sounds fine, but most pieces use more than just one string. It would be good to hear how they sound in combination with the other strings both in chords or in an excerpt like the opening of the Tchaikovsky concerto.
The gold has a richer and fuller tone on some deeper notes but sounds empty with higher ones imo. Czardas honestly sounds the best with the dominant string. Full, rich sound with the perfect amount of muddiness.
When I personally play that song, I need my g string to be able to hold up to my bow pressure bc I like to play with emotions and want that beginning heavy sounding
The Gold string is the best. Fuller sound with more overtones. I suspect it also has a wider dynamic range and easier to play...expression tonal sounds better. I think the silver is a bit more one dimensional and not as full in presence
I agree with you on your analysis. I presume that if I were a professional violinist I would let it depend on the music I had to play which strings I would use. Some music needs warm and soft, some music needs bright and outspoken.
I prefer the slightly warmer gold but the silver cuts through a bit more if that's what you're looking for. Obviously your amazing playing is generating a large portion of the tone and if I played on your violin, it's not going to sound good ;-) ;-) ;-)
I like the gold best. The gold is mellow enough to sweeten up a violin but brilliant enough to give a violin projection. The Evah Pirazzi Gold golden G sounded too brilliant and the dominant silver g sounded too brilliant!
If I was playing on a stage I would pick golden evah pirazzi because it makes bigger sound but silver is has way clearer sound than goledn one and dominant would be my last choice
The gold sounds muffled, the silver sounds like it has more soul, and the thomastik sounds good in a clinical way. I think the silver sounds best on your violin

I mean different violins with different timbre. I want to know what my violin is so I can buy strings to complement it's specific sound. I want to be able to hear the timbre and know if this is what people call sweet or bright or whatever. People talk alot about this but I don't know what it means exactly. But how to achieve these sounds on one violin would also be interesting to me. 🙂

Dominant g is not good.Silver or gold for me that not change much!You play slow bow,if you tried them with a fast,like the passage of Sibelius concerto,which is played only on the g we would judge better
Evah Pirazzi is Just loud and shouting. I was initially attracted by its clear pitch and used evah Pirazzi Gold set for years, but now I felt no artistic feel in it. No sweeter than dominant, especially for old classical melodies. Dominant feels singing with my pressure. Those who prefer to mimic the real gut strings, they surely go for dominants.

Yes, that's definitely a problem with the gold. I guess it's a soft material that wears down quite quickly.
