Great advice Walter. As a full time minister the shop is where some of my best inspiration comes from. I put in the time with the books and "thinking chair," but the shop diverts my mind away from the task at hand and lets me marinate what I have read and have been thinking and it usually comes together. Not only is the shop a "happy place" (see previous comment by philochristos) it is the creative place that puts something tangible in the hands of family, friends and customers as well as solves some of the problems I come up against as an administrator and minister. I really appreciate you approach, farting around is some of the most productive time we can have. Thanks.
Couldn't agree more, Walter! Farting around is the bridge between work and making for me. When I'm blah, I just head into the shop and start cleaning, messing with tools, organizing, and before long I'm thinking about a project and end up doing 'work'.
Best reason for getting into knifemaking or any other hobby, pass the time and enjoy yourself at the same time. I carve wood, so I made some carving knives from a old felling saw blade. Needed a hunting and wanted another bushcraft knife, so made them from old files. They all worked out ok. Learnt a bit and had a lot of fun swearing at myself. Planning a copy of a Canadian Russel hunter from a old carbon steel circular saw blade next. Practicing new swear words so long. Thanks for your channel, always something worth hearing in your programs.

I've been working out of town, staying in AirBNB's for about 16 months now with all my knife making and bow making stuff in storage. Lately, I've been thinking about how my garage was my happy place. For the last 15 years or so, that's where I was the happiest. I miss it like crazy.
Hey Walter. I think a great alternative to machine those covers for you chisel is to 3D print them. Don’t know if you’ve looked into this, but could be a very viable and way cheaper way to produce those

I was just watching a video on the last guy in Sheffield who was still forging knives by hand. He claims that he was doing two gross of knives a day -- and the rule was they had to make 14 for every dozen to cover 'losses and breakages'. Can you imagine a RUclips knifemaker hand forging 288 knives in a day?
Walter. I have an idea for a video series. I've seen pretty much every knife maker on youtube create a series where you follow along wit them as they produce super extravagant knives or swords. They go all out with the mosaic damascus, rare and exotic handle material, the whole 9 yards. I have been watching your videos for many years and I'm pretty sure you have never done that. Lets see some fancy stuff. throw in some mokume gane, and cool damascus. Lets see what you can do.
@checoleman8877 I'm not talking about Patreon support. I'm talking about a commissioned build for a specific customer who is paying for the sword. It's a ton of time. Add fancy materials, and the price rises considerably. Patreon money won't cut it.
You can make a simple dovetail d-bit cutter. I know you are more a knife maker than a machinist, but you have some machinist skills. It's a good thing to do on a fart around week. It's easier if you have a d-dit grinder, but it can be done on other tools or even freehand with some care.
I got started on knife making with very little money, using hand tools only. Giving myself permission to work slowly, by hand, ended up paying me back big dividends. (not financial, but in better mental health and fulfillment.).
Your solution for the Chisel tips is a great solution. But a simpler meathod may be to use Plasti-Dip or some heat shrink tubing?? Just a couple of other ideas? I enjoy your channel, and you were one of my earliest influences! Thank you!!
I think 5 is my record for starting over just on 1 handle. I don’t make sheaths, I have a leather guy that does them for me. He told me once I really did nice work. I laughed and said you only see the successes. You don’t see the scrap pile.
Sometimes it's hard to just get started. I find for me ill tell myself lets jyst go to the shop and do this one 5 min ling task. Next thing I know been out there hours
I'm in the fart around and find out stage every time i go into my little carport I call a shop... then I start hyper focusing on one thing and wind up with blisters on my hammer hand 4 hours later.

The chisel protector is the PERFECT part to be made on a 3 d printer.

Why not 3D print?
I screwed up 5 knives before i ever got my heat treatment correct. I still have my first knife like object and will keep it forever.
