Those sheep must have been so stressed 😥
These sheep have been here for years. The ram has knocked people down, Gerry being short was a favorite target. ❤ The plan was Kirsty and Marie on fencing and Amaury and Grant dragging or carrying. Then the guys left. Note Jason got two, Philip one and Pavlina has learned to drag rams and carry sheep from last year. 😂
@@carolinegooder7091 I know
@@carolinegooder7091 so that's ok then. They are used to being run instead of managed. Perhaps someone can mention that to them. 🙄

I find the relationship between Ruby and Lancelot to be so charming ❤️🇨🇦
I do as well! I love to see them together!
Simpatico...
Just because Ruby needs a friend and has to tolerate a dog being the only one he has. They should have given Ruby away to a good home years ago.
I respect that Ruby wants to live mostly outside. He was always fighting other male cats during his youth. Now "retired" there are other cats around. They could build him an enclosed cat patio so he could transition into living more indoors. ❤
I have wanted the humans to give Ruby more love and attention and some kitty friends. ❤
Hire a local sheepdog and handler for 5 minutes
The attempted sheep herding was painful to watch.
Yes, I used to show sheep.
Stephanie that field the sheep are in needs topping. Sheep prefer shorter grass. Or, let in your neighbour's cows for a week. They'll eat off all the long grass.
I love seeing Ruby venture into the chateau a bit with her buddy, Lancelot. I hope all is well at home for Grant.
Ruby is so adorable. She knows she can't come inside(because of allergies) so she's only inside to eat Lancelot's leftover food or hang out with her new friend that's her size♥️😀
Ruby is a male cat. It's weird I know. I've never heard the story of why he has a female name 🤷♀🤷♀🤷♀🤷♀🤷♀

So sad to see Michael leave he needs to get his driving test done and be independent then could come and go easily! Love him to bits he's like a shining light at Lalande and so is Steph when he's around. Hopefully see him soon back at home with Billy and family. Yes poor sherp they were traumatised by all the shouting and sticks so scary for them 😢. Hope Grant is ok and can come back soon. Great video as always. Xxx❤
Chasing the sheep like this is very stressful for them. It also heats them up and their fleece will be very damp, causing it ti stick with the lanolin in the wool. This can cause nicks when shearing and gums up the shears. So take the advice below and get them trained with a bucket of grain and the person who looks after them will be able to lead them into the shed. All those people screaming and running around will just terrify them. Sheep only have one set of teeth so no defenses except flight from trouble. Advice from an old shepherdess!
This is correct. We always bring our sheep inside the shed the night before, so they are calm and quiet the next day. Mainly for the reason that they shear better: ie the wool comes away better with the clippers. If a sheep is hot and sweating, the wool is harder to remove and as Linda says, it makes the skin more prone to being nicked by the clipper blades.
I came for the sheep but stayed for Mrs Hughes. If you can cope with Highclere Jason - you can herd sheep.
Has anyone news on Jared? He too is so talented. Stephanie, Is he slated to come visit?
@@keithj3223 he was just there last Christmas.
Sorry Grant left early. Prayers for him and his family.
Amen...
Ruby wants be an indoor cat, what a beautiful patient little being, turns out she loves company 😍😻❤️
He loves company … Ruby is a “he”
Ruby is a male cat
If you feed the sheep ever day a cup of sheep nuts but shake them in a bucket loudly before you feed them. they will learn to follow the sound of a rattling bucket. Which makes moving sheep so much easier.
That has failed a lot with these sheep. ❤
They are used to not having human interaction because they are pets not a commercial herd and trying to feed them for a few weeks would make them more reliant on being fed as opposed to feeding themselves
I think it's funny the kettle was moved back to the kitchen. It makes sense there, even if the coffee maker is in the other space.
Yes I noticed that too 😄
Yeah, having the kettle/coffee maker in the small dish washing area isn't the best.
@@demoiselledelamontagne Yes agree that handling boiling water or hot drinks in a busy confined area is a problem. And also everyone would carry their hot drinks out into the kitchen to drink causing a safety issue in the doorway.
Michael looks good. It’s nice to see him at LaLonde.
This is just crazy!
Why not use a bucket of feed and lead them where you want them to go? That’s how we move our cows from one pasture to another.
That’s how we moved our sheep too, just get them used to coming into the shed for feed once in a while and they will just follow you. Less stressful for everyone:)
The last two years were much better than this. It seems like chaos for no reason at all. Two years ago, Dan used his drone to herd them, and last year they were guiding them within a much smaller space. Frankly, I don't see why they don't just start bringing temporary fencing around the sheep (effectively herding them by bringing the enclosure around them) instead of run the sheep around like this.
That was exactly what I was thinking a bucket of grain shaking it to the shed
That's what I was wondering. When I had goats that worked like a charm.
I need.
To tell you lanson not is not a sheep dog. One he's too small. And he's very welcomable. Nothing wrong with that. I could see you can have a contest in the winner with all those forward.Games who is going to be the champion of the week. Now that sounds like fun.
Love your aunt's hair with the pony tail and bangs!
It is a happy ship! And brings us happiness as well.
I think this was one of my favorite videos! Not that I like sheep herding but I like everyone together and smiling and seeing parts of the chateau that we haven’t seen in a while. Bye Michael
And yes I can imagine the restorers getting a laugh watching! 🤣😂
It was good to say Ruby, the cat in this episode. I look forward to any glimpse of Ruby. It's good that he's developed a friendship with Lancelot. Think he's enjoying being inside your chateau.
I'm so glad I found you again. YT unsubscribed me. Makes me happy every time I watch your videos.
I absolutely love the fact that Ruby is starting to come around more often!! ❤
not sure why you dont use feed and fence of part of field sheep get stressed easy
Yes, when you have a tiny flock of sheep like this, someone should train them on a bucket. Practice going out there with a bucket full of sheep nuts (pellets) and rattle the bucket loudly, then give them the feed on the ground when they come. Very soon, the sheep will follow you and that bucket everywhere. Saves all that running around stressing them. My goodness watching them trying to gather those sheep was 👀 Those animals still have their heavy fleeces and will be baking hot. We have about 120 sheep and all the mature ones know to come to a bucket. It saves so much time and stress. Plus, they should have moveable hurdles to place into a pen shape to heard them into. Trying to shove them in a tiny dark shed was not a good idea, a sheep will not want to enter a dark hole where they feel trapped.
@@KathyRichards-tr9zx It really worried me to see Lancelot chasing the sheep - it must have been so stressful for them. Can't understand why everyone thinks it was hilarious. Love Stephanie to bits, but felt the sheep were being stressed just to amuse the viewers.
@@vfl5211 In fairness to Lancelot, he seemed to be pretty good when he was called back. But yes, Lancelot should be taught to ignore the sheep as his instincts are for hunting down and killing vermin, not for herding livestock. I am sure he thought his humans were hunting them, not trying to gather them and therefore that's what he thought he should do too. Who knows, he could surprise us all with the right kind of trainer, but really safer for everyone to keep him away.
They have tried the feed method with these sheep, it doesn't always work. The drone worked once but they hated it. Wait until moving them to the Winter pasture day across the road. The original plan was Marie and Kirsty on fencing and Grant and Amaury carrying and dragging. Then the guys left and too many people decided to help. 😂 Note Pavlina dragged a ram and carried a sheep, and Philip got a ram. Jason got two also. They learned last year.
LOVED seeing Ruby and Lancelot at the end in the doorway! OH, my heart!
It’s so good to see everyone together ❤
There were about 3 people (who shall remain anonymous) who really made the sheep herding successful. The rest seemed to be a bit of clown convention. Thankfully, it’s a small herd….I had flashbacks to my childhood growing up on a cattle ranch and having to help herd hundreds of cattle on horseback - my very loud and impatient father loudly barking orders….and woe be the one who let a calf slip through!!
I love how Gerry’s teacup matches his pj’s perfectly! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
You all need a sheep dog, Dan has his boarder Collies. They have a natural gift. You can also have a grain bucket

Hi Stephanie, Michel leaves, Vivienne arrives the ever changing faces at the Chateau. Mark & Scott
Sorry to see grant leaving the château.
And walk don’t run if you run the sheep run !
Use gates or temporary fencing to direct them !
A number of people suggesting that Stephanie should have a one of Dan's puppys for sheep herding next year. Wonder who they think is going to be the main care giver/handler and both human and dog need significant training together. A good shepherd and their sheepdog are very much as one entity.
Hi Jason, I live 20mins from Highclere & have visited many many times, wonderful place! Enjoy LaLande.
Absolutely hilarious!
Jason was a superstar with the sheep, nothing gets past ‘Mrs Hughes’ 😂😂
Stephanie you should really turn the beautiful picture over the side board, into a fabric. It would make a beautiful scarf.
lol! The sheep herding was utter chaos, even more so than usual! If it wasn't for Dave, you'd have been chasing sheep in the woods. He's a god send. On the other hand, the adorable Lancelot is unfortunately not a herding dog, unless it was herding the sheep away from where they were supposed to go. However, Lancelot is very good at rescuing lost wee pchicks. Congratulations to all who succeeded in catching a sheep. Well done. :) I'm betting none of this happens at Highclere. :) Wishing Grant and his family all the best. Much relieved to see pchick Lucky doing well. The courtyard looks beautiful. More please. The best to all. Have a great weekend.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Lancelot could be trained to herd sheep!

Yes, defending Stephanie and Nati. I reckon it’s very organised. Runs pretty much like clockwork and such a beautiful camaraderie between everyone.
I don‘t think, it‘s too organized; I think, when it comes to the guests and the room reservations, I think it is.
BUT I think this is absolutely enough and very very charming. It seems to work, like lovely Tatinette is saying, and this is the main and most important point.
Funny😂sheep LOVE food ….a thought why you don’t buy a sack of sheep nuts and between all you guys just feed them a handful of nuts each week ….they’ll come to your hand …then they’ll just follow the bucket after a while and just walk in 😂
Yes, and so much easier than getting another dog as so many followers have suggested!
I love watching you all in your daily lives as I do the Pethericks and Dan etc, you are all medicine for my mental health. Just now and again I come across other channels. I was watching Bridgerton this morning and when I see the wisteria on the house, I thought how beautiful that would look on the Chateau when you drive into the courtyard.
Good the sheep got their summer trim.
I am in the UK but I wonder if you have seen a reduction in your bees and butterflies in France, normally it is a buzz right now and all the pollinator-friendly flowers are out.
I live in Texas, USA and not only are the bees and butterflies disappearing, so are the birds. But that’s the ”plan” is it not???
The 'plan'? I've had loads of bees on flowers in my garden and plenty of birds eating my blackberries and sitting on my trellises pooping all over my pole beans.
It can be influenced greatly by the severity of your winter the past year. In the PNW of the USA we had almost a week below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This can cause winter death of insects (including domesticated bees) and birds and there will be a smaller population the following summer season.
If people would stop spraying insecticides and weed killers everywhere it would help.
@@crae3422 I accidentally found a "how to exterminate bees" video on You Tube. which horrified me. If you have bees you dont want you get an apiarist to remove and relocate them not an exterminator

What a beautiful day this was. And does Michael still create RUclips videos 😮????
Nooooo. Only use dogs trained to stop and never to chase sheep unless on command otherwise it will end up with a tragedy.
Great vlog today thank you much entertainment😂. I found myself interacting with the screen like one does in a horror film..run..get away sort of thing. Stephanie when you mention oh it’s hard to help with the sheep with holding the phone..I talked to screen and said yes put the phone down whilst laughing, at that moment thought there would be that brief drop in the field of grass and we would see that lol. Word of advice, repeating a dogs name endlessly only confuses them . When you want them to do something, they will respond better, over time , to a comnand and then praise. For example , Lancelot leave , Lancelot stay ,Lancelot come , Lancelot sit etc
Also I have used: Only use name with COME TO ME commands. Go way or stay the name is not used.

Stephanie "And the Alliums are out." Yeah they are. Too bad that you can't borrow a Border Collie to herd the sheep. I hear there may be puppies up for adoption soon ;)
No, BCs need daily work and activity. New dog and handlers with no experience is a recipe for disaster. One day of moving sheep a year isn’t enough for a BC.
@@BonnieBLass22 And yet I saw Nick put a BC puppy in his shirt 'joking' that a puppy was coming with him. Can Nick train a puppy? Is there anything that Nick can't do? ;)
@@denisevincent4050 well Nick is primarily outside and in theory could bring a dog with a decent recall on most of his job sites. It’s lucky Lancelot wasn’t trampled by the poor sheep. A major lack of common sense on show.
What are you all doing? The sheep will not go in a direction where there are people standing, especially with the small dog and a camera man there. What a pantomime. Two people is all you need and walking them quietly along the fence gently tapping the stick on the ground round through the gate. Needed to leave them to settle down first then walk them through Without anyone standing in the gate area! Their poor hearts would have been pounding from being so frightened.
Yes, all that running around was unnecessary. Calm and quiet with sheep is the answer. They should train them with a bucket of sheep pellets to walk into a small pen. They will learn very quickly to follow the bucket when they get a treat at the end. Would save so much time and stress and then they have the sheep quietly corralled from where they can shear them. Also, the grass in that field is far too long, it needs topping. Sheep prefer shorter grass and also very long grasses can get caught between their cloven hooves and cut the skin there.
@@KathyRichards-tr9zx Yes. I'm no shepherd, but if the neighbour's sheep get loose I just walk towards them slowly with arms out in the direction I want them to go and they usually go there. Having a small pen in the field they can be directed to seems better than trying to get them into that shed. One person to control the gate.
Quite cruel, really.
And don't sheep get very stressed out by being chased by a dog, even one as small as Lancelot - and he is NOT a trained sheepdog!!
Totally agree a complete fiasco. Stressing sheep out for entertainment. I wasn't impressed either.
Always a joy to see Michael in La Lande. It just feels so right when he's around.
Love his smile.
And he seems happy whenever he's in Lalande. Or maybe it's the "vacation mood"
its a really really bad idea to encourage the dog to chase the sheep. if they were in lamb you would have real problems. If he decided to chase any neighbours sheep he could be shot. No dog unless trained should be encouraged. I have never seen such a pigs breakfast. If you reduced the fencing during the week across the field ( an electric fence can be moved gradually) you could get them readily in a small pen ready to shear without stressing them.
The rams are fixed, so there are no lambs. Lancelot is not allowed near the sheep without a human there. ❤ Stephanie didn't encourage this in the past. Isabelle and Percy could babysit during this kind of event. ❤
You better give Lancelot a check over for ticks…the combination of long grass, warm weather and sheep is conducive for ticks.
So happy to see Jason. He's such a wonderful man. Glad Michael was able to reconnect with everyone. Loved Lancelot's sheep herding debut. He was so proud of himself. 🤣❤
I’m sure there’s somewhere near you where you could even engage a herding dog and its handler to come in once a year and help you with this. It seems a bit needlessly stressful for the sheep! I love your channel and am so grateful for all that you give to us us. I’m just making a suggestion. I don’t mean for it to sound critical.
The sheep are not used to being herded by dogs and so would give them the runaround just the same, even sheep that are used to dogs sometimes just break off and go there own sweet way if they are so inclined
@@shirleyw8531 I believe that sheepdogs are often used in circumstances just like this--on an occasional basis. I have a friend who has goats and uses them just a few times a year. Sure, they try to break away, etc., but that's what the dogs are trained to handle.
You need portable fencing 😂that will make sheep herding so much easier
I thought they were going to when Kirsty and Pavlina were carrying the green fence is the last video. Instead they put it around the shed. 🤔
Catching with less frightening runnings and some attractive food, might do the trick
Your sheep are so stressed when you handle them this way. Maybe one of your farmer neighbours could help you ?
For those that are saying that Stephanie should have borrowed Dan’s Border Collies - Yes, they have a herding instinct, but they’re not born with the knowledge to herd them into an enclosure for shearing! These remarkable dogs are TRAINED to follow sheep herding commands, and Dan’s dogs are not.
But we would miss out on all the phone! No professionals pls! Ha
Oh, drats. There goes that idea for one of them to come to LaLande. 😢

Untrained dogs ate incredibly dangerous and stressful to sheep When I used to live in Wales in the 80s, all loose dogs were shot on sight by the farmers because even a well meaning dog just having fun can quickly run sheep to death, even a dog the size of Lancelot. My own dogs mum, grandma and 2 sisters were all shot by farmers for being unrestrained, even though they were only suspected of sheep worrying and werent even caught in the act. The dog owners ( a friend of mine and his mum) tried to protest, but the magistrates and all that are all farmers themselves. Lesson. Dont let your dog off the lead in Wales
I love animals & am highly sensitive over them, but the sheep didn’t look badly stressed to me ❤
