- Here I show start to finish, how to dehydrate peppers and process the dried peppers into fine powder. The peppers used were some of my first 2016 harvest, well 2nd small harvest. It's a mix of West Indies Red Hab, Red BBM, Paper Lantern x Butch T Yellow, Not Black Fatalii and Aji Peruvian.
Here're links to all the products I used or referenced in the video.

FoodSaver vacuum sealer: amzn.to/2bjAV1k

Make sure to get right size sealer for what you use. I've read that the wide mouth works better than regular. Wide mouth is what I use, have had no problems at all with it.

I do this also. I dry my the old fashioned way. Then I remove the stems and grind the peppers. I have found Serrano peppers to add an absolutely fabulous flavor. As far as heat goes, the more you use the more heat and flavor.
Thanks for watching! It's fun to mix them up for different flavor/heat profiles.
I was wondering what to do with my Carolina reapers. Then I had the idea of drying them out & making a powder. To my luck I came across this super easy to follow video. 👍🏾👍🏾
I'm glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching.
I really enjoyed watching this video Peter thank you for sharing. I've learned so much watching your Channel and my family enjoys watching also.
Thank you very much, ctophercs! I'm glad it was helpful. I'm getting ready to publish a new video on the same topic here pretty soon.
Awesome video!! My dehydrator arrives tomorrow, perfect timing!!
Cool! Let us know how it does.
Very nice to have an ultra hot pepper powder "how to" video online. Will be adding this to my collection of recipe and sauce videos.
I'm glad you like it. I'm going to try smoking and making flakes next. Should have some pods to play with soon.
@@pepperdactyl Flakes are easier, just crumble them in your fingers when they are dry.
@@ericgeorge5483 There are many different ways, crush them by hand, mortar and pestle, blender/grinder.
This is an awesome video.. This is very similar to how I'm going to make my super hot powders and seasonings. Awesome channel and Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
When summer is in full swing I can dice up a bunch of peppers and sandwich the pieces between two “stovetop spatter screens” which look like tennis rackets with metal mesh screens. I tape the two layers together. I put this out in the sun on top of an empty 5 gallon bucket. Worse case scenario takes two afternoons.
The tubes are a great idea. Thanks.
Thanks! Unfortunately, they've been much harder to find lately.
I enjoyed the video.. thank you for sharing how you make your powder!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you very muh. i still had about 50 reapers left and wanted to use them before they go bad in a few days. i just got a dehydrator and didexactly this. Hopefully ill have powder made by this same time tomorrow. Thanks :-)
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your pepper processing. I think I did more drying of peppers than anything else this year, also did a lot of ferments, but I dried some of those, lol.
@@pepperdactyl This is the first time i've done this. ive been buying fresh peppers from just one source this year, using all of them fresh but this was his last batch he had for the season and i honestly bought more than I knew what to do with haha. Thanks to your video these last 50 reapers wont go to waste. I already have them dehydrating aswe speak, all cleaned, chopped in half and took up just 2 shelves in the dehydrator. It's a bit damp outside here in Georgia, so i have them in my laundryroom with the window open. Again thank you very much for this video.
The frequent throat clearing is such a great thing to have to sit through.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Gidday,,I have abt 22 different varieties of straight powder, ranging from birdseye to purple reapers ,hurtberry & many other super hots.I have the same machine as you & pretty well same method but I put mine in zip bags.
Thanks for watching. Yes, there are lots of ways to do it. Sometimes I will just put dry pods in a sandwich bag and crush them by hand for big pepper flakes.
Just found your channel Your pepper variety is unreal! ❤ 😁 Great job!
Thanks, Sarah!
thanks. this was very informative
Glad it was helpful!
Great idea with the test tubes
Thanks, Tiffany!
I actually just bought the ones you recommended bc i give a few away to family that love spice
Oh yeah man I’m about to start doing this thanks
Thanks for watching!
Thank you enjoyed it very much look forward to the next one. God Bless You
Thanks for watching!
I like the centrifuge tubes.
Thanks, William. They work very well for pepper flakes/powder. I'm on my third bag of 100. They are a great sharing size, and easy to carry around.
That's awesome peter
Thanks for watching!
Very helpful video! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
I just received a handful of Carolina Reaper peppers straight from NC. Looking forward to mimicking this video :-D
Awesome! Thanks for watching. Good luck!
I have some dehydrated Carolinas ..... not sure what I would even use them on once I crush or make into powder. They are crazy hot as you well know!
@@straubdavid9 put little in some seasoning for burgers. Gives it a good flavor and kick that's not overpowering
Great, clear video. Thank you!
Thank you!
Wow thanks much am going to try it
Thanks for watching!
Do you keep trays that you solely use for hot peppers? I am newly learning and have the same dehyrator.
This a great question. Yes, I do. It's a good idea if you have anyone in the household who might want to dehydrate non hot things. I used a sharpie and wrote a 'P' on the trays used for peppers.
Think I’m gonna try this next year… what do you eat with the powder?
Congrats on 10K views Peter!
Thanks, Lucus!
hi pet.thx for sharing....how long your pepper powder can be used till its rotten? i want to make powder for my herbal plants but i dont know hows it will work
It will stay fresh indefinitely if you vacuum seal it, maybe several months in an airtight jar or bag.
+Peter Stanley cool... i wonder why my pepper powder rottens in 2 weeks.. maybe not dry enough? that vinegar can be used for leafs like sidr..peppermint ? sorry my english not good enough hope you can understand what i mean 😁😁😁
DRY them in your oven if you do not have a dehydrador works great also
Yes, that works well too. I don't recommend it with superhots though if you don't have a good way to vent them. It'll run everyone out of the house.
Peter Stanley why?
The reason it runs everybody out is they’re frickin 🥵!
*cough*, *clear throat*, *monotone voice*, thank you for the info!
Thanks for watching!
Thx for the great video..if i want to just make pepper flakes..would i just not grind it so many times?thx
Yes, you could that. If you have a mortar and pestle, that is the best. You could also put the dried peppers in a bag and crush them by squeezing the bag.
@@pepperdactyl ok thank you so much😊
nice video, thank you
Thanks for watching!
awesome info! cheers!!
Thanks for watching, James!
what type of dehydrator do you use?
A cheap Presto Dehyrdro. There's a link to it in the description.
For those of us without a vacuum sealer, do you think that freezing the powder vials would help to maintain their longevity?
I'm not sure. I would put some kind of desiccant, maybe something like rice, in there to absorb excess moisture.
@@pepperdactyl Thanks for the idea
Could i use a Barbecue grill to Dehydrate my peppers which is outside so you don’t get choked up and coughing indoors.
I haven't tried it myself, besides quick smoking them, but I always finish in a dehydrator. Some folks dehydrate in the oven. It would probably work fine, as long as you can keep the temps lower, around 150-170.
What would the ratio be of fresh into powder? How much fresh would it take for one pound of dry powder?
I don't know the answer, sorry. It might vary between peppers though, depending on how much water content they have.
I found this website, and it says 10 lbs fresh to 1 pound dried. hannaone.com/Recipe/weightchili.html
Hi..if i want to save parsley seeds from this years parsley..what should i do with the parsley i have now?shoukd i transplant them into pots now because i want to clean iut the garden bed they are in now..thank you🙂
Since parsley is easy to start from seed, I would just harvest and air dry when you are ready to end the crop, and then start new from seed next season. That's just my opinion.
Thank you peter..i appreciate your help😊
Have you ever tried reapers? I bought 24 jigsaw reaper seeds off of ebay and curious if this process is the same. I know that they're probably more hotter than what you used in this video. The vendor warned to use gloves even handling seeds
Yes, I've tried Reapers fresh, and have dried them for powder. The process is the same, with hotter peppers it's good to use more caution while handling. I use nitrile gloves and haven't had any issues.
Do you use 100% vinegar or do you dilute it with water?
I use 100%, just pour straight out of the vinegar jug into the spray bottle.
Thanks.
Can I use an air fryer?
I haven't tried it, but I have doubts. A dehydrator blows hot air through and vents out. But an air fryer circulates hot air in a small chamber, so a lot more moisture would be retained. It's worth a try though. If you do, please post back and let us know how it works. It might be great for roasting peppers?
There are so many "chefs" and other RUclipsrs that constantly say GO HEAD. Go ahead means proceed forward (like to the next step) while Go HEAD means go to the toilet on a boat or ship and does not convey the message telling you to proceed forward or to the next step.
Not really sure what your point is, but thanks for watching!
First I have to turn off all the fans, AC, and airflow. Then I put on a mask, and glasses. Wearing gloves are a must. I even lay down newspaper down to cover the counter. Skin contact with the airborne dust is very uncomfortable, especially on the face.
Those are very good points. Thank you!
Hi..how do you harvest the seeds of sweet marjoram plz..thank you
I have not grown sweet marjoram yet. With other herbs I've grown, I just let them flower and eventually they dry up on the plant, then pull the seeds pods off and they shake them over a bag.
@@pepperdactyl ok thank you kindly
Can you give some info on the name of the tubes again and where you get them, Thanks, great vid. I smoke most of my peppers before I dry them. Havent made any powder yet.
Thanks for watching. They are Karter Scientific, 207B2 Screw top, 10mL vol. amzn.to/2Djb0od
holy crap at 6:05 RIP ears, lol
Thanks for the warning. I'll turn down the volume.
Wouldn’t they dry out faster if they were cut in slices?
Yes, if you expose more surface area of the pepper, the drying time should decrease.
Peter Stanley roger that!i dried 4 lbs of sliced jalapeños in nine hours last night. Ten counting the slicing time.
I use a coffee grinder
i bet you just ate a hot pepper before you make this video
I can't remember, but probably :)
so much coughing, but thanks for this
Thanks for watching!
@@pepperdactyl Your information was valuable, I just personally think the production quality should match is all. I hope you don't think I was taking an issue with you as a person or anything!
Leaving the seeds in will make your chile powder taste bitter, it is recommended to take them out. Also most of the capsaicin is found in the piff not the seeds like a lot of people think.
Thanks for watching! I agree that the capsaicin isn't 'in' the seeds. It's in the oil, which is mostly concentrated in the placenta/pith but does coat the seeds.
Can you narrate my life? I'd be calm no matter what
Lol. Thanks for watching!
I drink my girlfriend's skinny girl margaritas so I can't say anything about that blender. 😅
Yeah, that blender is awesome. I've been using mine for a long time, just about every day for a few years now. They're way cheaper than some of the other brands but hold up just as well. Thanks for watching!
I think you ate couple before filming :D
🐞🌶🐞
Thanks for watching!
Man I had to turn of couldn't take the half cough half cleaning of the throat
Thanks for watching
So you talk a softly as humanly possible then you stick the mic right up against the blender when you turn it on... ok thanks deeeek!
Sorry about that
Rude wilson
that's sauce not powder
