  • Del Close is perhaps the least famous of the great comedy maestros of the latter half of the 20th century. The performers he worked with, directed, or taught at the Compass Players in Saint Louis, the Committee in San Francisco, and Second City and the ImprovOlympic in Chicago constitute a who's who-Elaine May, Mike Nichols, Shelly Berman, Fred Willard, Joe Flaherty, John Belushi, John Candy, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Vince Vaughn, Tina Fey, and Stephen Colbert, to name only a handful. But his ultimate legacy might be theoretical: Close led the movement to reinvent improvisation and establish it as an art form.
As he lay on his deathbed in a Chicago hospital in 1999, his friends flew in from around the country to throw him one last birthday party.

He was a friend and I stayed in his apartment a couple times in the 70s. He taught be to realize that if it isn't a bit dangerous, it doesn't need to be onstage.

but... his body was cremated before Charna could get the skull, so Charna went and found another and that's what they have at the goodman. If you google it you'll find the story straight from Chrana herself.

Is it true that he donated his skull to the Goodman Theatre?

    • @joekovach5789

A skull was given to the Goodman that is believed to be Del’s because Del wanted his skull to be used for productions of “Hamlet.” But the thing was that he was cremated and his ashes were at the iO in Chicago in a book.

Del was an enabler of John Belushi’s drug habit. He should be held accountable in memory. Just a fact. Del beat women……even dumb comics know dis. Do anybody really miss Del?

Beating a woman is one thing but to say he enabled another grown man’s drug use is a bunch of bull malarkey

Dude I'm currently attending IO all the greatest teachers/performers loved Del and think that his lessons/methods are some of the most effective improvisational tools to date. To be honest every remark you made about his drug use had truth to it. however that does not give you the right to insult the mans legacy just because you have a chip on your shoulder. Grow up dude and get a life

excuse me, but who are you to call Del, or John Belushi anything but great? as far as i can tell the only thing you have ever contributed to is the youtube community's collective disgust for you, and your degrating comments.
I hope you had a peachy keen new year, and I sincerely hope that your resolution was to think, at least a little bit about what you are going to say before you say it.
    peace,
    chad
