"The Wheel" from Jerry Garcia's debut solo album 'Garcia'. Written by Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia. Video directed & created by Justin Kreutzmann. www.JerryGarcia...
I’m so fortunate to have this album, I had to replace my original copy, my husband and I love this album so much. The Wheel is and always has been my favorite Grateful Dead song, yes I know it’s from Jerry’s 1st solo album!!❤️💀🎸👏Oh, I forgot, I actually did get struck by lightning ⚡️, July 13, 2012, it was Friday the 13th. That was wild, my husband was standing right behind me when I opened the back door because we heard thunder & our dog hated thunder, and BOOM 💥 struck right in my chest, my husband felt the blast and smelled the burnt smell. When I called Puget Power to let them know the electricity was knocked out in all the houses around us, they said I had to have Paramedics come give me EKG, I was fine, but our 60 foot red cedar was fried inside out, from top to 5’ off ground where I saw the lightning bolt come out of tree and slam me so flipping fast, lightning speed!!!! If the thunder don’t get you that the lightning ⚡️ will!! Indeed in my case. And yes, I have seen the Dead many many times, saw JGB and Ratdog, and Dead and Company.
@@adrianpeters2413 Lol, I have very long brown hair and in the 80’s I rocked a huge perm with ringlets, my husband, Jim always laughed and said he could give me the same look if he just plugged my finger into a light socket.
I think it is a pedal steel guitar. Who cares? Whatever it is, it is awesome. The whole freaking album is fantastic. To think this is from 1972. The Dead, oh the Dead. I remember the early shows with Pigpen. They were kicking ass back in 66.
Glad you found it before your time was up. We never know how long we'll have. I'll be 73 in a few days, and I was lucky to have heard this when it came out 50 years ago. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
I love and miss this sound. It's out of this world. There's a lot of good music out there, this really stands out on its own. It always motivated me to move forward.
The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will. Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more? Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more? Round, round robin run round, got to get back to where you belong, Little bit harder, just a little bit more, A little bit further than you gone before. The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will. As much as I *really* love his steel playing, to say he was unmatched is grossly unfair to Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Red Rhodes, Tom Brumley, Jay Dee Manness and so many others. Funny that Garcia was realistic about his abilities on steel, but his fans weren't.
I have been so blessed to have seen Jerry and the Grateful Dead Play and to be living in a Time where we can all listen to the Music while it is still sorta Free at 0ur beck and call . Peace and Chill :) QC
I saw JGB in Buffalo indoors at the Aud November 5th, 1993. One of the best concerts ever. I saw the Dead earlier that year at Rich Stadium. Piles of BIG empty containers of nitrous - Balloons were 50¢ Good times.
Nobody has ever gotten such a wide expansive tone as Jerry did on the pedal steel. This song and Candyman, The Bird Song, several New Rider songs and Teach Your Children are unparalleled in tone, although Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Al Prrkins also hold places in my pedal steel pantheon.

Stay off the brown acid. It’s affected your cognitive abilities. Both acoustic and visual as this sounds nothing like the Dead (apart from Jerry’s singing) and there is a full description of video (and visual of album).
I can see why you would think it's a Grateful Dead song as they played it 257 times live. As far as I know Jerry Garcia band didn't play this one even though it's on his debut solo record.
Just was in the feeling to hear some of this great music, so I entered in You Tube search - The Wheel, live version - so I found the one from mid 1977, at the Boston Garden. Really nice sound.

Cherry Garcia is my favorite ice cream flavor I got to meet Ben and Jerry before they got famous we are trying different flavors of ice cream after one of the concerts in Oakland California

I saw Jerry nine times! Including second night at Wembley when he played pedal steel on the only concert I am aware of

Jerry Garcia and pedal steel guitar = a gift to us from the big man above
A masterpiece from a musical era never to be duplicated.

That's The Truth! Jerry Garcia and the grateful Dead never forgot their roots and evolved to become consummate touring band.
It’s all a cycle, we’ll come back around to another era that will mimic this one.

It's actually a pedal steel -- an instrument more commonly heard in C&W music than in the rock genre (with some limited exceptions to the latter)
So, I'm one lucky SOB. I turned 70 recently, and never heard this song until last night. It is fantastic. Better late than never, I guess.
