  • In this video, I'm tackling the question why our family has chosen to pursue a bilingual homeschool approach, instead of homeschooling in one language and adding in foreign language study. I'll talk about the why and the heart behind my choice, I'll share what that looks like right now, and talk honestly about the challenges I expect to face with bilingual homeschooling as my kids grow into school age.

    Rachel I have to so much respect for you... it's hard raising bilingual kids when both parents are fluent in the language... so it amazes me your dedication in exposing them to different languages! Loved hearing your "whys" and love that gave you inspiration to create your curriculum!

    This is such amazing information and exactly what I’ve been struggling with! I speak Spanish, but mostly conversational (and some bible) and want to be able to teach my kids in Spanish. This is our 2nd year homeschooling and I am trying to incorporate more Spanish with my two kids. My husband is Chilean and I am from VA.
    I am so impressed that you had the desire to create a Spanish curriculum and executed it!! My kiddos are 7 and almost 10, so if you know of any resources we could use, or you’re planning on creating more curriculum 😉 I’d much appreciate your input! Thanks for your inspiration! I love your passion!

      My next video on this channel will be all about some of my favorite Spanish resources for all ages--so be sure to come back for that one this coming Friday. Do your children already speak Spanish conversationally? Bilingual Together has some morning time plans that look great for families that already have some Spanish background but are wanting to include Spanish more in homeschool. If my kids were older I would likely use those. We will also be creating more units for older kids in Spanish soon--we'll have a Christmas unit in Spanish in time for this December and have been asked to translate our History of the Bible unit into Spanish as well.

      We have "La Biblia para principiantes"--the Spanish edition of "The Beginner's Bible" --we have been reading through that one lately, that's the one I've found that suits my young children's level of understanding in Spanish the best.

    Loving the duck earrings. Hehehe... This is so true. We are shifting to literature based curriculum but it is difficult in our native language. I am not an expert even in my own language since we grew up bilingually and one language seem to dominate against the other. I am having a hard time since we just started homeschooling (just realizing my son’s gaps) and my eldest is having difficulty even understanding basic terms. Why? When in school they were instructed to speak in English and they would only be able to speak our native language for 2 subjects out of 8-10 subjects. Now, I’m making my youngest his own binder that could help him read and understand and might as well share it with the eldest.

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  3 года назад

      Oh--I have heard similar stories from many others--the experience of being in schools and not being allowed to learn in one's native language can have a really negative effect on comprehension, and it can be tough to overcome it. You're doing a great job finding ways to help them thrive in learning again!

    The most commonly used words in Spanish are often different than their English counterparts, but the “bigger” “harder” words are very similar. When speaking with natives, many times I have “made up” Spanish words for things that are “difficult vocabulary” in English and I was correct. 😂😂
    Reading and listening to science, the Bible and social studies in Spanish as-a-second language isn’t too hard for an English speaker who can read basic Spanish. My kids can do it, albeit, not as a high a level as they can in English.
    These things are harder:
    Understanding natives who don’t speak slowly, clearly and simply to you, as a favor.
    Reading fiction. I can read the Bible in Spanish but not Chicka Chicka Boom Boom 🤣. Some of those words are hard! 🤣
    And speaking
    We aren’t very good at those things.

      It's very true that listening and understanding conversations--and then being able to speak and respond in real time, is one of the greatest hurdles of language learning. That's why I'm glad we're starting so young--Cyrus already has so many Spanish phrases he uses in everyday life, unprompted, I think speaking will come much easier to him than it has to me. We got a lot of listening and speaking practice in spending the past few weeks with Angel's family! :)

    We are homeschooling in Afrikaans and in English. I have been struggling to find ways of included both languages. My children are also still young ( 8 and 5) so mainly it is just singing songs and reading books. I teach math concepts in both languages and I will often teach in Afrikaans but watch a youtube video in English together. This has worked fine however as my son (8) is getting older and we are starting to teach reading and writing I am struggling to find a rythm for our days. His sister is also starting to read in Afrikaans. Currently it feels like all we do is LA.
    I also include conversational French as we are expats living in a country were the majority of people speak Creole or French.
    Have you thought about how you are going to approach teaching reading and writing that in the next few years?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  3 года назад

      I definitely agree that it gets more challenging as your kids get older! Right now I'm trying to lean very hard into Spanish because I know the early years are so important for getting comfortable with speaking the language. I have looked at a couple of phonics/learn to read type of programs for Spanish and I plan that we'll do both phonics in Spanish and phonics in English...although probably not simultaneously. Phonics in Spanish is much easier because most of the letters only ever make one sound...I'm not sure if I will do it first or after getting through the more challenging English phonics. Writing in either language will be easy since there are very few differences in punctuation, capitalization rules, and I think as they grow and as I grow in my langauge skills, with time I'll probably be able to say--okay, today write a few sentences about this topic we learned about in English. The next day: okay, write a few sentences about the topic we learned about in Spanish.
      This bilingual homeschooling is uncharted waters for me, and I know we will be changing and adapting as we go. I follow @bilingualtogether on Instagram because she's further along in the journey than I am, and I'm keeping notes with resources she recommends.
