It's stressed a right point here in the video, that a financial flow is mostly funneled in one single place that is Astana. If you take a step outwards Astana, it will all appear pretty much different. Not necessarily such extreme life as shown here, but still people struggle a lot. Astana has always been a showcase, a bling-bling that has nothing to do with the image of the rest of Kazakhstan. And all those talks about a drastic shift towards green energy and everything progressive leaves me sceptical since it's their usual battle cry. I'm saying this as a person who lived in Kazakhstan for 18 years.
Capitals are always considered to be the faces of the states. KZ has a giant territory and certainly not all places will look like Astana. For ex, I like Almaty even more. And as a person living here for 26 years I do believe that we can shift to green energy. It just needs time and work. We have potential for that at least, and I hope for better.

Kazakhstan is my home for a couple of years, I worked in Almaty as a teacher. I visited Astana, Shymkent, Taraz and their version of Vegas, Kapchagay. The country has a vast natural resources, marvelous landscape, amazing scenery and great friendly people. You do not need to go further in order to see the other side of the coin, in the outskirts of both Almaty and Astana, you can find villages wherein roads are not paved and without good supply of drinking water. There are many things that need to be done in order for most of the people to feel and see that their economy and govt is truly working for them.

I am from Kazakhstan , living in Astana for the last 18 years. And I can say - people live bad, there is no democracy over here. There is a lots of corruption, salary is low, food is expensive and prices are growing. And what I hate most is that we are still controlled by Russian Federation. And after Russians had occupied Crimea, we started live worse here in Kazakhstan.
The autonomous Republic of Crimea voted with a 83% voter turnout on March 16, 2014 to secede from Ukraine and integrate into the Russian Federation. Roughly 96% of voters were in favor of this. Previously in 2008, polling done by the Razumkov Centre found that roughly 68% of Crimeans were in favor of seceding from Ukraine and joining Russia. So it isn't unfounded or unreasonable to think that number could rise from 68% to above 90% in 6 years.
without light and heavy industries Kazakhstan can't achieve progress in sustainable energy. You've got to build export oriented industries to make sure your budget has enough flow of revenue and doesn't depend on the price of oil as well as give your citizens a chance to build their businesses without a risk of being heavily taxed or raided by corrupt officials. Then you should spend money on infrastructure and education only then you can start such long term projects like sustainable energy.
That is democracy my friend, yet no one has the balls to become a candidate there, because in secret the opposition will do everything to stop you or pay you to stop running for president.

As a person living in Kazakhstan I can confirm everything from the video, however still wondering why @The_Guardian did not include a human rights situation and how dependent is Kazakhstan from beloved Russia. China has not threat to our Independence as Putin's imperial ambitions. Practically, the green energy has very low support from the government to small businesses because the state contracts for green development are not transparent, hence without any positive outcome of green projects (usually unprofitable and loss of investments).

I love the comments that claim this is a promotional video for Kazakhstan... have they watched the whole video? It is all about the contrast of the "bling-bling" and big promise of the bright future of the capital and how the rest of the country's (well focused at one certain area to be honest) experience of the last couple of decades. I do like that the country is moving towards green energy, especially at a time where the political "right" treats global warming as nothing more than a hoax (and that includes russia too) and I do hope that they will find a solution on how to grow the Aral sea (and not just the pockets of the current leadership) and also become more democratic in the future, I wish all the best for the Kazakh people!
KZ has a small population, it's one of the least densely populated areas in the world. Only 18 mln population in the 9nth territory in the world. That's why you don't see many people in the streets and Astana is more like a governmental city for offices. Check Almaty. It's more lively.

@Sayat Serikov I can't say for sure, but international students seem to be catching on in China since the application for the funds for overseas studies is much more abundant and easier than those similar student programs in Japan. I mean, the info is all on the website or notice board of each university in China, it's not so hard for you to look up and to obtain partial subsidies from these government-fund programs. But I don't think it's entirely free, at least not here, in Hong Kong.

Perhaps a bit irrelevant to the topic here, but I would like to say, I've recently started learning Turkish as my fourth language. When the man in the video was talking, at first I thought I was goinh crazy, but I could pick up a few words that he was saying, like "Shu" meaning water. But then I did my research and found that im not in fact crazy, and Kazakh and Turkish are in fact related languages. I mean, how interesting is that!
Don't show me the well being of a country by how pretty their highrises are - owned by the wealthy. But how many communal dinning halls they have. What are the levels of wealth inequality? What's the life expectancy of the poor, what's the infant mortality rate of minority groups? How's their healthcare system? How much debt are working families in? What percentage of the population are home owners?
Amora Lay well, to answer some of your questions...I don’t know the statistics, numbers and figures,but I’m pretty sure that government’s statistics are pretty false,just made to make everything look nice. I can only say from my own experience, I live here all my life. A lot of people aren’t satisfied with healthcare system, even though it’s free, but lots of medical staff isn’t qualified at all. Sometimes you can’t be sure that they know something about medicine at all. Of course private medical centers do exist,but they are quite expensive. Actually a lot of people are debt, they get loans in banks and later struggle with paying the money back. A lot of people can barely make a living.. even for those with high education it might be very difficult to find a job,since the education we get here it’s not relevant and often don’t meet requirements of modern labor market. If you want to live in a big cities like capital Astana you will have to pay expensive rent for flat. And probably you will be paying the rent forever,because buying your own house is almost impossible for an ordinary person with average salary. Again, you will have to get loan from the bank, and pay it for the rest of your life. In smaller cities it’s quite easier to get a house,because everything is less expensive there of course. I would say that probably a third or a half of population own houses.

With such enormous land area and population 5 million less than the New York city Kazakhstan won't face any problem in making themselves sustainable and if they could be a little more optimistic they can achieve this goal earlier. I am german. Many people who favour western ideologies have to understand something more deeply. Just because a country is led by an elected King instead by parties in a democracy it makes it not necessary corrupt or unjust. We have a democracy and many problems with corrupt politicians who are bribed by big companies. If the King or leader is a righteous and god fearing person who cares for his people the country as a matter of fact can be more fine and stable than a corrupt democracy.

I lived for five years in Atyrau, the oil boom town of Western Kazakhstan near the Ural River Delta at the Caspian Sea. I taught children of expats from USA, Netherlands, Italy, Malaysia etc. that were working in the oil industry. It was such a roller coaster ride and I saw so many expat families from the west come and go as oil industry went up and down. I can only hope solar energy will prevail because oil industry is terrible and is fueled by greed and corruption. Plus it is detrimental to the environment. Fascinating video!
Billions have been spent in development of Astana from the returns from oil, gas and coal. Continuous infrastructure improvement for decades has kept construction workers busy. Now we will see what happens when the greenies are allowed in. The man who rules this country will not let Astana be diminished. If the greenies policies and plans did not coincide with his own plans he would not have signed on to the Paris Agreement.

Caspian sea and the Aral sea are called SEA because of their largeness. Caspian sea was called inner sea at Soviet times because it was almost entirely inside the soviet territory. But actually both of them are lakes. Too large however. Cuz they were connected to the ocean at some point in history.

Two rivers fill the Aral sea. Amudarya and Syrdarya. They come from the mountains of Tadjikistan. But due to agriculture in Central Asian countries , especially Uzbekistan, they overuse water in order to get more crops (rice, cotton, other agriculture), so these two rivers lose much water, and cannot supply Aral sea appropriately. So Aral shrinks so much. It all began in Soviet era, when they wanted to get record harvest, so the sea level decreased. Kazakhstan can not solve this problem by himself. Kazakhstan needs help of international organizations.
The full title of that movie is: "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan". Read it carefully again and think deeply about it. Sacha Baron Cohen is not that stupid to make fun of a small nation, no point for him.

I LOVED this video. Kazakhstan's capital city of Astana looks absolutely gorgeous - modern, futuristic and shiny. But their attempts to wean off oil are necessary. Solar is a great option and is likely to work when one considers the country of Kazakhstan is sparsely populated. On the other hand, wind is an equally good, possible even better option. Kazakhstan is windy and sparsely populated and can build wind farms in the steppe. There is probably enough wind energy in the country with land to build wind farms to power the whole of Central Asia.
That solar farm they have out there it quite impressive, and continuing to expand. Love to have ones that big over here in the UK someday. Can't believe that much of that inland sea has gone. Saw a documentary about the same area a few months ago and it's still so shocking to see. An absolute crime that needs to be reversed as soon as possible. And we know they can do it, they just have almost zero motivation to get on with it right now.
Its mainly Uzbekistans fault that the aral sea is still shrinking, they divert a lot of the syr darya river for cotton production, so no, kazakhstan cant just 'do it', international cooperation is necessary to fix this problem.

without light and heavy industries Kazakhstan can't achieve progress in sustainable energy. You've got to build export oriented industries to make sure your budget has enough flow of revenue and doesn't depend on the price of oil as well as give your citizens a chance to build their businesses without a risk of being heavily taxed or raided by corrupt officials. Then you should spend money on infrastructure and education only then you can start such long term projects like sustainable energy.

As a person living in Kazakhstan I can confirm everything from the video, however still wondering why @The_Guardian did not include a human rights situation and how dependent is Kazakhstan from beloved Russia. China has not threat to our Independence as Putin's imperial ambitions. Practically, the green energy has very low support from the government to small businesses because the state contracts for green development are not transparent, hence without any positive outcome of green projects (usually unprofitable and loss of investments).
Im a Chinese, dont worry, I rather we achieve a win win relationship in business. It takes time for Kazakhstan to develop, but through hard working and methodology strategies in politics, Kazakhstan will finally success!

I love the comments that claim this is a promotional video for Kazakhstan... have they watched the whole video? It is all about the contrast of the "bling-bling" and big promise of the bright future of the capital and how the rest of the country's (well focused at one certain area to be honest) experience of the last couple of decades. I do like that the country is moving towards green energy, especially at a time where the political "right" treats global warming as nothing more than a hoax (and that includes russia too) and I do hope that they will find a solution on how to grow the Aral sea (and not just the pockets of the current leadership) and also become more democratic in the future, I wish all the best for the Kazakh people!
That is one hell of a city! Dunno why but it does seem somewhat similar to North Korea, just way more advanced.
KZ has a small population, it's one of the least densely populated areas in the world. Only 18 mln population in the 9nth territory in the world. That's why you don't see many people in the streets and Astana is more like a governmental city for offices. Check Almaty. It's more lively.

@Sayat Serikov I can't say for sure, but international students seem to be catching on in China since the application for the funds for overseas studies is much more abundant and easier than those similar student programs in Japan. I mean, the info is all on the website or notice board of each university in China, it's not so hard for you to look up and to obtain partial subsidies from these government-fund programs. But I don't think it's entirely free, at least not here, in Hong Kong.

Perhaps a bit irrelevant to the topic here, but I would like to say, I've recently started learning Turkish as my fourth language. When the man in the video was talking, at first I thought I was goinh crazy, but I could pick up a few words that he was saying, like "Shu" meaning water.
But then I did my research and found that im not in fact crazy, and Kazakh and Turkish are in fact related languages. I mean, how interesting is that!

What's the life expectancy of the poor, what's the infant mortality rate of minority groups? How's their healthcare system? How much debt are working families in? Amora Lay well, to answer some of your questions...I don’t know the statistics, numbers and figures,but I’m pretty sure that government’s statistics are pretty false,just made to make everything look nice. I can only say from my own experience, I live here all my life. A lot of people aren’t satisfied with healthcare system, even though it’s free, but lots of medical staff isn’t qualified at all. Sometimes you can’t be sure that they know something about medicine at all. Of course private medical centers do exist,but they are quite expensive. Actually a lot of people are debt, they get loans in banks and later struggle with paying the money back. A lot of people can barely make a living.. even for those with high education it might be very difficult to find a job,since the education we get here it’s not relevant and often don’t meet requirements of modern labor market. If you want to live in a big cities like capital Astana you will have to pay expensive rent for flat. And probably you will be paying the rent forever,because buying your own house is almost impossible for an ordinary person with average salary. Again, you will have to get loan from the bank, and pay it for the rest of your life. In smaller cities it’s quite easier to get a house,because everything is less expensive there of course. I would say that probably a third or a half of population own houses.

I am german. Many people who favour western ideologies have to understand something more deeply. Just because a country is led by an elected King instead by parties in a democracy it makes it not necessary corrupt or unjust. We have a democracy and many problems with corrupt politicians who are bribed by big companies. If the King or leader is a righteous and god fearing person who cares for his people the country as a matter of fact can be more fine and stable than a corrupt democracy.
Also monarchy corrupt leaders and bureaucracy. Before french revolution, public/little people have been starving. Leaders wanted to make a war for glory and making history before democracy. Also people love such victory things

I lived for five years in Atyrau, the oil boom town of Western Kazakhstan near the Ural River Delta at the Caspian Sea. I taught children of expats from USA, Netherlands, Italy, Malaysia etc. that were working in the oil industry. It was such a roller coaster ride and I saw so many expat families from the west come and go as oil industry went up and down. I can only hope solar energy will prevail because oil industry is terrible and is fueled by greed and corruption. Plus it is detrimental to the environment. Fascinating video!

Billions have been spent in development of Astana from the returns from oil, gas and coal. Continuous infrastructure improvement for decades has kept construction workers busy. Now we will see what happens when the greenies are allowed in. The man who rules this country will not let Astana be diminished. If the greenies policies and plans did not coincide with his own plans he would not have signed on to the Paris Agreement.

Caspian sea and the Aral sea are called SEA because of their largeness. Caspian sea was called inner sea at Soviet times because it was almost entirely inside the soviet territory. But actually both of them are lakes. Too large however. Cuz they were connected to the ocean at some point in history.

They want government to raise the sea level ? How does that happen ?
Two rivers fill the Aral sea. Amudarya and Syrdarya. They come from the mountains of Tadjikistan. But due to agriculture in Central Asian countries , especially Uzbekistan, they overuse water in order to get more crops (rice, cotton, other agriculture), so these two rivers lose much water, and cannot supply Aral sea appropriately. So Aral shrinks so much. It all began in Soviet era, when they wanted to get record harvest, so the sea level decreased. Kazakhstan can not solve this problem by himself. Kazakhstan needs help of international organizations.

Well, if people laugh at Borat, they may also assume that there could be a nation whose member can be proud of his sister-prostitute or believe that the movie was filmed in Kazakhstan (in fact, it was filmed in Romania). That tells anyone with some intelligence at least that there is a poor knowledge of geography and cultures; an arrogance; and a low mental development in general. So while some people are laughing at Borat, I am laughing at scenes like cowboys getting angry at Borat singing an anthem, etc. I believe that's true message of the movie because many people in the US have no sense of humor at all, not to say most Americans can't simply distinguish Central Asia from Eastern Europe by a rural/urban landscape. There was a funny situation when I was crossing US border at Buffalo with Kazakh Passport in 2007. The immigration officer looked at my passport and laughed: "Oh, Borat!". So I asked him: "Do you know the full title of the movie?" He became confused and couldn't answer. That's the true state of the US today.

I LOVED this video. Kazakhstan's capital city of Astana looks absolutely gorgeous - modern, futuristic and shiny. But their attempts to wean off oil are necessary.
Solar is a great option and is likely to work when one considers the country of Kazakhstan is sparsely populated. On the other hand, wind is an equally good, possible even better option. Kazakhstan is windy and sparsely populated and can build wind farms in the steppe. There is probably enough wind energy in the country with land to build wind farms to power the whole of Central Asia.

Can't believe that much of that inland sea has gone. Saw a documentary about the same area a few months ago and it's still so shocking to see. An absolute crime that needs to be reversed as soon as possible. And we know they can do it, they just have almost zero motivation to get on with it right now.
Its mainly Uzbekistans fault that the aral sea is still shrinking, they divert a lot of the syr darya river for cotton production, so no, kazakhstan cant just 'do it', international cooperation is necessary to fix this problem.

While you travelled here, have you even talked to anyone who's supportive of Nazarbayev's rule apart from a minister that you can easily portrait as very biased view?

We are reviving Aral, we are increasingly getting westernised, we aim at high standards of the modern agenda, despite being decades behind when we started. We've significantly closed the gap of the level of consumption with the leading countries. Lots of people were fleeing the country back in the 90-s. It was almost a million immigrants in 1994, now we're counting thousands.
Kazakhstan is on a right path. We're not asking for western money. If you don't want to help, at least don't stay on the way. I'm not surprised with this film, but it leaves an unpleasant aftertaste. I guess that was the idea
