Girl!!!! Thank you!!! my 1st go at it, hello spring wardrobe. I'm obsessed now. Love your videos, super helpful ♡ wish I could attach my creation, think you would be proud!
I've just discovered all your videos and you are by far the best at tutorials for making things! I've become so much better at sewing because of you and your tutorials. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this! While I am going to draft my own trouser pattern for my 7 y/o daughter, I need to watch the assembling. Mums who sew for their kids are awesome! 😍
Thank you for saying sew for the fun of it. I do think I was trying to run a race and I was getting tired of sewing .You give me more inspirations .Thank you pretty lady .
Do you know how many videos I’ve watched that were AWFUL in their explanation of a flat front!?? I had NO idea you did this already. You are such an amazing teacher Dana. Thank you so much for this!!
Oh that is genius, you are actually incorporating that front dart into the seam. I love it. I have seen this done on blouses, but putting it into pants is brilliant. Thanks for the ideas.
I have really enjoyed all of your sewing videos!! I just started sewing in October (my first creation was a chef costume for my son!). I have heavily relied on your videos. They are great because it has really taken away a lot of the fear that I had of sewing! I was scared to cut the fabric, scared to mess something up, and I thought that everything had to be very precise and perfect. Your videos have really shown me that it is not scary! It's fun! I keep finding myself referring to your videos even when watching other tutorials because I love the way you explain everything and your additional commentary you provide while you are working on the task at hand (like when you are pressing a hem, etc). Thanks so much for sharing! I have watched most of the several, several time! Can't wait for more!
Thanks, Dana, that’s an excellent tutorial to follow. I have a friend with a three year old boy and a one year old girl so that’s why I’m following you as I normally quilt.
This video is so great. How you carried it out was great. It wasn't rushed yet it didn't take forever either. It was in depth and perfect. And the production of the video is great too. This definitely helped me even though I don't have a sewing machine. Guess I just have to keep stitching by hand lol
I love your sewing videos. I even bought all your patterns and info on your site. I am hoping as your kids get older you keep the videos going with patterns of preteen clothes. Hard to find any videos on these sizes. Thank you.
I got a sewing machine a few years ago, just out of boredom and wanting to try something, but I put it in my closet a few month late, lol.., anyway late last year I took it out, I'm more serious about trying new things and perfecting this art, and your vids are awesome, thanks so much for posting.., I hope one day soon I can take some classes
babylock sewing machine make sewing easier for u because u don’t need to thread the needle manually and cut the thread using scissors.. o wish i have machine like yours!!! happy sewing!!
Love watching your tutorials. All your patterns are on sale. If you could please show drafting this shorts pattern with a flat front I will be so grateful and thankful.
I love your videos! It makes me smile when I get on you tube and it says you have uploaded a new video. I would love a pants tutorial! Maybe for girls! Thanks!
I love everything about your videos and have made a ew patterns for my granddaughter who i s now two. Thank you for sharing your work! Its much appreciated. It would be great learning though, if you had tutorials on how to draft the patterns,; or just noted the measurements on the patterns along the lines. For one, it would save paper, and for those like me who dont own a printer at home, copyshop charges for printing can add up.
Thank you Janaki! That's good to know! This particular pattern is one that I sell in my shop, so I'm just showing you the steps, rather than the measurements. But that's a good idea to share a video about creating a pattern. You can see a little bit of that in my "Leggings" video, where we trace around an existing pair of leggings: ruclips.net/video/_i8jtyXhnKo/видео.html Thank you for watching and chiming in! I appreciate the comment! - Dana
Yes, you can add a drawstring. You can do a faux one like I did here on these pjs: ruclips.net/video/Oscgt5W0y3o/видео.html Or, if you want a full drawstring around, you'd need to make buttonholes in the front middle, for the string to come in and out. You can read about my sewing machine on my blog here: www.madeeveryday.com/2014/11/my-new-sewing-machine-and-how-to-pick-your-own.html/
For some reason, these never end up flat in the front for me. I end up with a wrinkle, but this time I added two even “pleats?” There’s too much pant for the waistband. I’m not sure what I am doing wrong. Anyway, adding the pleats worked and made them super cute! I’m using boy shorts with a circle bell hem to make little girl Capri style pants. Thank you for this tutorial, Dana!
Merci beaucoup je n ai pas tout comprit ce que vous avez dit mais en tous cas vous etes la seule à m avoir montré une manière très simple de coudre un short !
Hi Dana!! I am a big fan! I watched almost everyone of your videos twice! My favorite is the circle skirt. I download templates online but they don't always fit. Can you teach us how to create these templates using our specific measurements? I would be insanely helpful.
hey dana! would love to see a tutorial on your heirloom skirt from your blog, or the "semi-handmade" maternity shirt you made on your site with the side ruching!
Hi Dana - I love your shorts with a Flat Front. Just wondering if you have a pattern for adult women? I'm a beginner sewer - so not sure how to make pattern bigger. Appreciate your help. Have a great day.
Sorry I don't have an adult pattern for these shorts! But you could create your own by taking a pair of shorts that you currently own, and that you like the fit of....and use that to trace onto paper and create your pattern. It's a really fun learning process!
I'm glad you like the video! Here's a blog post I wrote about how I create patterns from a store-bought garment -- www.madeeveryday.com/2008/07/tutorial-make-your-own-pattern.html/
Great style and tutorial. I bought the pattern and am going to make the shorts for my grandson and granddaughter. Do you finish the seam edges with an overlock stitch or just leave them raw? You didn't mention that so I wonder if they would last through the laundry without major fraying. Also I had an idea that I wonder if anyone has tried. Instead of using buttonhole elastic , which is very narrow, could you make buttonholes in the regular elastic if you want the shorts to be adjustable? That could work well if you are not sure of the child's waist size.
I just left my seams raw and for the most part they are find. I don't find that they fray too much. But yes, you could serge them....or cut them with pinking shears. :) Dana
Thanks for your reply! I made the shorts for my granddaughter and grandson and they came out adorable! I added pockets because the kids love them! Thanks for your great patterns and videos.
I really enjoyed this tutorial! However, I was a little bit surprised that you didn't show a way of finishing the edges of your fabric after sewing the initial seams (with a zigzag stitch, serger, or pinking shears) so that they wont fray. Other than this, this was a great and fun tutorial to watch :-)
Just a quick question: How do you know what size and how much fabric for the size on the person? I have two grandkids that are coming up to visit in April and we usually do a sewing project together...so much fun!!! One is 10 yrs and 13 yrs. Do your patterns allow for sizing. I do love these shorts and I believe they will as well!! I just heard you mention that you are a button person. My mom was a great seamstress ( she actually worked in a clothing mill in Philadelphia, probably in the early 30's. She also had her own business....she is gone now (she would be 106 yrs) but I to have always loved buttons. I have many of my moms from the mid 20's up to the 90's. They are so cool. I have shared a bunch with friends as she really did have buckets full. Some are still on the original card that they were on. I am glad that I found you today...like you lessons. You are detailed with out making it scary to start a project. Have a fabulous day!!
So how about explaining when the McCall's guide says to sew the inside seam first. Your way seems so much easier! I have a Viking so I can finish all the edges too. Forget the pressing!
Hahaha. Well there are many different ways to sew pants/shorts, so I'm glad this way works in your brain like mine :) Have fun sewing! Your Viking machine sounds awesome! Dana
thats a seriously fancy sewing machine. I'm licking threads and using scissors like a caveman overhere! gonna try and make a pair of these for me! love an elastic waist!

Thank you! I’ve been wanting to learn how to sew shorts. Do you have a pattern for adults on your website? I enjoyed watching this tutorial! Super helpful. God bless you!
Could you possibly do a video on how to add pockets to faux pocket pants? I've got a pair of maternity work pants that don't have real pockets and pockets are essential to my workday. Love your videos!! Thank you
Yes, you can see a version of that here on my site: www.madeeveryday.com/2013/07/kid-shorts-with-front-pockets.html/ Just do a search on my site for "kid shorts" and you'll see all sorts of tutorials and variations
I love this pattern and made roughly 4 of them. With my daughters (2yrs old) no pocket, the front rolls down on her. Any tips to prevent it? Thanks!! 😁
Can you make a video on how to make the boy's shorts? I love how the pockets look and I want to try and make something similar but in a more feminine style. Thanks for the great videos.
Hello I have a question. Since you use the waist measurement to determine the elastic length, how do you pull these pants over your hips if you're trying to alter this pattern for an adult. Wouldn't you have to make the waist opening wide enough to pull over the hips yet have the elastic to shrink back up to fit around the waist. I hope this question makes sense... can someone please please help me I am very excited to make this pattern love it!
Love your videos. However, I have a question today. You were using cotton fabric for those shorts. The inside seams will inevitably fray after a few washes or wear. Wouldn't it be better to use a zickzack stitch on the sewing machine or, if available, a serger with this project. Just thinking.
You can always serge your seams to keep them from fraying, or you can trim the edges of the seam with pinking shears (those zig zag scissors). A serger is extra nice because it makes your seams look nice and polished and reinforces the seam. But you can also leave the edges raw. These shorts are sewn with a 3/8 inch seam allowance, which gives you some wiggle room. And actually, I've sewn many MANY shorts for my kids without doing anything special to the seams and they wash up just fine without much fraying.
Thank you Ashley and Dana. I was always wondering about that. I will try it out. Maybe it also depends a little bit on the fabric. And, as a matter of fact, I do have a pair of pinking shears, never used them though. It would be so much faster to just sew a pair without going back and fixing the seams. Now a serger is a big helper. Thank you again.
Thanks for the video. I so do love your sewing room. It is so professional looking ( media presentation-wise). The lighting is perfect. I do have a question. How much overage is needed for the back to accomplish this look?
Never cut off selvedge! Selvedge makes the cleanest seams & hems w/out having to be overlocked ... It is the strongest part of the fabric - it never frays!
Sometimes when I've kept the selvedge on a garment, it shrinks and wrinkles differently from the rest of the fabric and requires heavy ironing to look decent. I prefer to always cut off selvedges so the garment behaves in a more regular way.
Very cute shorts. I made a skort shorts. Out of a bandana fabric fat quarters. Can u sew skort shorts? A flap front of the shots. It look like a skirt.
You don't mention clipping the seams, or zig zag over the edges to stop fraying, do you recommend either? I have always pressed the seams out from the centre to each side unless doing a French seam or something, your way looks simpler, but cotton will fray won't it.
Brother and Babylock are the same. Brother costs less. All the consumer level machines do the same thing and have the same quality stitch. Get a cheap Brother for button holes, zig-zag and overlock. Get an industrial Juki 8700 for the straight stitch.
Since the back pieces are wider than the front I'm assuming because it has an elastic back, how do you determine math wise how much wider to make the back as opposed to a typical pair of pants were maybe you were using a normal waistband as opposed to using an all elastic waistband what is the formula, thanks.
Hi, I really like your projects. Could you also tell how to make a baby nest with a zip attached pouch? I am requesting for the pouch attachment so that we do not need a blanket to cover the baby when he or she is sleeping in the baby nest and can remove the pouch if we want. Such tutorial will be very helpful.
When you wash the fabric first, do you tumble dry it or line dry and then iron it? I was taught years ago you should never wash it first but I'm seeing more and more advise to wash it first.
Hi Carol, it depends on the project and the fabric. If it's a cotton fabric, or other fabric that I know will shrink with washing....and if I know I'm using it for a garment, then YES. I always wash and dry in the dryer, before sewing with it...to avoid my garment shrinking later. But if you're making a quilt, then most quilters prefer to NOT pre-wash/dry. They like to wash and the dry the quilt later as a finished project, so that all the fabrics shrink up together and it gets that fun bumpy feel.
I am going to make your shorts for my grandson and some dresses for my granddaughter and maybe some shorts for her too. I bought a whole bunch of 100% cotton fabrics to use. Thanks for the advice.
Hi, was just wondering from all the way over here in Australia. I purchased this pattern, is the seam allowance included in the pattern or do you have to add it on.. I can’t wait to make 😁😁
The seam allowance is included in the pattern. You don't need to add anything to the pattern pieces. And then sew with a 3/8 inch seam allowance, or whatever is the equivalent in Australia.
Hi Dana! Your videos are wonderful and I love them. I'm just curious of what kind of sewing machine you are using(I do know that is a Baby Lock machine but do not know the kind.) Thank you!
Love your videos Dana! Thank you for teaching me to see. Definitely a new love of mine. Just wondering, do you need to use a zigzag stitch when closing the elastic in?
I love these shorts but the problem I have is that they seem to be tiny. My daughter is 7 and very small for her age, I made the shorts in size 8 and they are still small. Any suggestion to enlarge the pattern so I can make bigger sizes too?
Hi there, sorry about that. These are meant to be slightly more fitted, but gathered waistband shorts. Make sure you pre-wash/dry your fabric, use a 3/8 inch seam allowance, and feel free to add an extra 1/2 inch on the sides and tops or extend the crotch area if needed. Or go up another size!
Love the flat-front look. They look retro. Such a cute and fun project!

Just thinking.

not necessary. i made 5 pairs for my son a year ago and have washed them plenty and they are still going strong!
You can always serge your seams to keep them from fraying, or you can trim the edges of the seam with pinking shears (those zig zag scissors). Whuuut That ain't ur grandma's sewing machine. LOL. I'm having a bit of machine envy over here.
Brother and Babylock are the same. Brother costs less. All the consumer level machines do the same thing and have the same quality stitch. Get a cheap Brother for button holes, zig-zag and overlock. Get an industrial Juki 8700 for the straight stitch.
So good mam. Well done and salute👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Love your videos, thank you so much. A quick question how do you learn how to sew?
Cmt tailler le pantalon homme
Since the back pieces are wider than the front I'm assuming because it has an elastic back, how do you determine math wise how much wider to make the back as opposed to a typical pair of pants were maybe you were using a normal waistband as opposed to using an all elastic waistband what is the formula, thanks.
I love this pattern! I wish it went up a few more sizes say to size 14 or 15.
Can you give a tutorial on how to cut the pattern. How to put it together after cutting it?
Super cute Dana. Thank you so much for sharing!!!
Lovely video. I wunder why you don't serge or zigzag. Looks to me that the side- and croch seams are going to fray in the washmachine.
Im just learning to sew but was wondering the same thing
Maybe she's gonna use pinking shears to finish? She only apparently wants the shorts to last one summer, maybe they're not gonna be washed many times.
What I said also. I’m assuming that she is assuming ( we are all assuming ) that we already know to finish the seams.
wonderful video. Thanks. can you please show how to make cargo pants
Thanks for the idea!
will you do a tutorial on sewing a babynest please?
انت سكرة خالص
in english you are so sweet
your way to reach the informations 💓💓💓👌
I have a question. Did you use a stretchy fabric or just a regular piece of fabric?
Just a woven (non-stretchy) for these.
lindas costuras gracias por compartir Saludos desde.Costa.Rica
Can you please explain once on how you did the markings on the paper? Your images on the site you gave are not clearly visible
Can you also make this for adults (women) 😊
Can you show us toddler overalls/dungarees, please?
Please can you make a video on how to make kids shirt with button hole? Just love your videos you make it look so easy =)
It's a LYRIC - there's a link to more info in the video description. :)
Cute & easy! Did you make the top you're wearing? Love the sleeves!
Thanks! I didn't make my top...but thanks! I love those sleeves too :) Dana
Love your videos Dana! Thank you for teaching me to see. Definitely a new love of mine. Just wondering, do you need to use a zigzag stitch when closing the elastic in?
Oops! I mean to sew haha
You could use a zig zag stitch or a straight stitch. Either one is fine.
Thank goodness for this video! The pattern I bought just confused me
very cute, I've got to try this
I love these shorts but the problem I have is that they seem to be tiny.
Or go up another size!
i was just reading this on your blog last night, wishing you had a tutorial video! xD
Thanks Katherine. Good timing :) - Dana
