Turned her into a child of the net but she was superior in every way. Johnny tried to save her because he thought they'd kidnapped her because she was HIS output but he was too self-centered to see that she was a heavyweight in their relationship. Alt was the legendary 'runner who found something interesting and fun in Johnny. She was the one with the plan to jump back into her own body and save herself. Didn't need a rescue from her loud, brash input. It's so fucking tragic. From all sides.

I do so love the characters in this game! Adam Smasher is terrifying, inhuman robot; Saburo is an amoral monster - and then there's Alt, an utterly unfathomable, alien... what? Cyber-demigod? Meeting with her, and agreeing to an alliance always felt like a Faustian bargain of the worst sort. She's like Gaunter o'Dimm from the Witcher 3, only even more inscrutable and dangerous. Damn, but CDPR knocked this story out of the park!

Here is a question, is she Alt? Really the real human Alt? Does humanity exist as part of the digital, or was she used to give birth to something far more dangerous, an AI construct, with all that made Alt great as it's core programing. There are some rather terrifying implications and I like how Alt hints at this, but they never fully confirm this leaving everybody to speculate, saburo, johnny, Alt... are they ghosts in the machine? bodyless human minds transcended into the digital framework of the net, or rogue Ai's constructed from their drives, memories, personality of those sacrificed through soul killer to create a truly self aware and autonomous rogue Ai that can't be stopped?

The motif that starts at 4:16 perfectly conveys the human tragedy of the situation. Not just the situation V is in, but the reality of the entire setting. The mournful cello brings to mind Nikola Tesla "You may live to see man-made horrors beyond your comprehension." It's easy to get caught up in the attractive and cool parts of Cyberpunk's setting but deep down it almost feels like a dark prophecy of the beast that consumerism and technology may some day create.

I think that's what's scary about Cyberpunk; How appealing it makes it's world seem on the surface. The neon lights, the fast cars, the thrilling gunfights. The game told me that no matter what, if you got a gun, some augments and the right connections, you can pull yourself up from the dirt and become something great. Hell, once I really started picking up steam in the game I started to think this life was maybe something I wanted. Only when I finished the game was I like "Holy shit, I just fell for that."

At this moment I knew that it’s no longer corps that are a threat, nor is it gangs, or mercs. It is not strange. Everything in this theme builds tension - similar technique to Interstellar's theme. A lot of ambient sounds that give you a feeling of expansion/having a lot of space. This feeling, we interpret as 'awe' or that everything we fought for before was meaningless in comparison since we do not hear anything like it elsewhere in the game (except perhaps, on the rooftop). When it hits, it is particularly heartbreaking since it coincides with the revelation of V's inevitable mortality.

I don't get why some of you think this song sounds scary, foreboding, alien or intimidating. It sounds beautiful? It sounds like curiosity being turned into discovery. It sounds like talking to a being out of legend. It's awe-inspiring; you're talking to an AI! Alt cunningham DIED, like you, like johnny, and the three of you are having a conversation! It's incredible! This whole scene was so cool! And she teams up with you after this, and doesn't like, double cross you or anything either? She's just super powerful and super cool, you know, like a free AI? I listen to this track to relax sometimes; ALT's probably my favorite character in this game.

This theme is both beautiful and terrible. It is pretty heartbreaking when it hits, because it coincides with the revelation of V's inevitable mortality. That aside, in general... The feeling of awe is just one step away from terror to be honest. Depending on the nature of the creature - Alt is pretty alien in the way she thinks, so this makes it extra subject to interpretation. In the Panam ending for example, she doesn't have any compassion for noncombatants. You get the feeling that she would obliterate you as easily as snuffing out bugs and feel very little remorse either way. Which is par for the course of any being (AI) that is above human level intelligence/capable of self-improvement/has achieved the Singularity yet lacks a 'soul' or human feelings like compassion.

@@deyraga I just completely disagree. V is talking to 2 people who already cheated death. There’s nothing less “inevitable mortality” than that. People have an anti-AI bias and don’t look at them objectively, made worse with a fundamental misunderstanding of how a true AI would behave(which is to say, perfectly logically, and thus, extremely pragmatically. A logic based entity is a powerful force for good in a world ruled by insanity). Plus it’s literally crazy to say a “SOUL” is what causes morality to arise. Every evil scumbag in the world has a “soul”, if they exist, which cannot be proven. Emotions are not where morality comes from either. Jealousy, envy, greed, hate, lust, bigotry. Plenty of emotions can drive people to commit unspeakable acts. Morality comes from understanding, and superintelligences would have no problem with understanding. Alt isn’t even “alien” because soulkiller makes AI based on human brain scans. Delamain would be an example of a more “alien” AI, and he still helps V just to help them. Alt was made out of a human brain, and her motivation are not unknowable. She wants to tear down Arasaka. Calling her cold/scary/evil for that is so out of place, bc this is not a world of sunshine and rainbows, it’s a dark unforgiving gritty world. If your primary goal is destroying the most evil company in the world, that means you’re doing more effective “good” than most people. Sacrifices in pursuit of that goal are acceptable if you believe the ends justify the means. Even if you don’t, taking any action against arasaka has a super high chance of body count; it just comes with the territory. It’s almost an inevitability. If you’re agreeing to set sail, you can’t bemoan getting wet, without hypocrisy. Alt is a force for good in the world. Talking to her is an awesome experience. Fearing her is foolish, unless you fear all powerful people. She at least uses her power far more ethically and responsibly than most people in The Dark Future of Cyberpunk 2077.

You might refer to the following explanation of the Ship of Theseus paradox: If you replace every part of a ship with new parts, is it still the same ship? If I measure and make copies of every part of the original ship and assemble these, are there now two original ships? Clearly not. There is the original, and the replica. What if I were to scrap the original, and christen the replica with the same name as the original ship, is it now the original? Gets murky but I think not. Similarly, if I were to make a copy of myself as an engram, is that entity me? It is not. I still die eventually, the engram that looks, acts and thinks like me will live on. But it is not me, in the same fashion the reconstructed ship is not the original. You can't beat mortality via engrams, the original "You" still dies.
If you study literature, you would know to be extremely cautious dealing with powerful people. A well known saying is that power corrupts, afterall. But that aside, in general, you have to be precise and careful simply because any misstep could have dire consequences simply because of the amount of power involved. If you deal with the powerful, you have to be very careful of the deal you're cutting - the devil's in the details. We have never seen anything like Alt in our world. In theory, an AGI or ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence) like Alt has more power than the most powerful kings in our history. She would literally be a God. Wouldn't you be careful? Dealing with an ASI, your life could end in an instant, and you can't stop it no matter what you do. I would scrutinise the terms of any contract made more thoroughly than I would any real-life legal contract. It is the blindspots that get you.
That aside, are you a programmer, have you tried interacting with ChatGPT? Alt is leagues beyond that but the point still stands, if you don't specify your prompt carefully, AI may act in a way you don't want. For example, V in this case didn't specify to spare noncombatants and so the AI kills all of them - what a blunt tool that cuts an undistinguishing swathe. Granted, humans can be equally callous but we can be assured that they to an extent have the same underlying biological programming. Under the same scenario, humans may decide to spare them since the noncombatants are no threat. To an extent, humans are more predictable because humans generally think alike. This is also why we are cautious of psychopaths since they lack that same underlying programming. When dealing with AI, you can't be sure about the blindspots in their logic, the little contingencies that you did not expect. They think in an entirely alien fashion, even if the result is to emulate the logic used by us humans. I like to use the following analogy:
      1. I ask the AI to solve global warming. The AI concludes that humans are the root cause of global warming. The AI then proceeds to enact genocide on us humans to solve global warming. This is actually similar to what Alt did.
      VS
      2. I ask Alt to help us destroy Arasaka. She proceeds to exterminate all Arasaka employees in the building. Do you see the similarity?
That aside, how certain are you that Alt was copied exactly by Soulkiller? Iirc Alt herself said that the process of copying a consciousness tends to leave you altered in a fashion, which is V's concern. See Johnny for an example, the game hints that he is different from he was in life, some memories could be altered in the process of copying; other are copied less than 100%. The lore around the Secure your soul programme indicates that it is at best, an imperfect copy.
I'm with you on logic being a force of good. But you must bear in mind that AI is a tool like any other. It doesn't have any desires to do good in this world unless it was imbued in the process of creating that AI. You musn't anthropomorphise AI, even if it were modeled after an actual human. It is a very, very blunt tool. You can't be certain that it will behave the way you expect. An engram generally behaves how it thinks it's original self would have behaved. But the interpretation of that directive, that has a miniscule chance of being very, very off. When you have all the power in the world, that could mean millions dead. I do not think the original Alt Cunningham would be willing to slaughter noncombatants, for example - she strikes me as no Adam Smasher. That she does suggests she is altered in some manner by the process of becoming an AI or her experiences beyond the Blackwall.

@@deyraga The Ship of Theseus is incredibly irrelevant in the context of V's digital immortality in Cyberpunk 2077, because in the finale, you are literally killed and replaced with your soulkilled engram, and you continue on unaffected. You've been replaced by your engram. That's not the -game over- screen, it's a blip before the story continues. You still have V's memories, desires, feelings, opinions. Besides, a comatose patient may be "alive" but they don't resemble themselves. There has been no replacement for them, they just stop "being" themselves, living as themselves. They're still alive, but it feels to the world like they're dead. If you have a digital recreation of yourself, that has a body and agency, then it doesn't feel to the world like you've died. A person with your name and personality is still out there, living and making decisions that you would make. The dynamic pattern that is "you" is still dynamic. Johnny is a prime example of this. He died long ago, and yet he continues to influence the world. Reconnect with his old friends in ways only Johnny could. His dynamic pattern has re-entered the world, and effects the world like Johnny did. It's also not relevant in the context of copy vs original's decisions, because EVERYTHING that's not static changes. It doesn't take soulkiller to change a person. Identical twins with the same DNA born in the same minute will become different people if they have different experiences. If you were to make an identical clone of someone, and then place the perfect clone in a grueling prison camp for 30 years, it would be a different person than the original because of it's different life experiences. No digital backup required. I'm not arguing that an engram doesn't change from it's progenitor, I'm arguing that calling a brainscan-clone of a human "an alien" is false.
If you used literature to grow your understanding of the world, you'd know that power doesn't actually corrupt, power merely reveals latent corruption. A non-corrupt person given power will use that power responsibly, a corrupt person given power will use that power corruptly. Alt Cunningham's inner state is not known to us, but I agree that it doesn't seem like she's similar to Adam Smasher. So, why would she become corrupt out of nowhere? V also just...isn't afraid of her. Many *players* of the game are, but V's voice isn't trembling talking to her, their hands don't shake, they don't turn and run away and never speak to her again, yet many people who played the game feel that way. There's a disconnect between Alt's reality and many gamers interpretation of Alt, going back again to how you are misunderstanding AI. You’re comparing chatbots and unrelated software that we call “AI” in our world to a true, sentient being. Alt is not a digital assistant who receives a task and completes it to the best interpretation of their abilities, Alt is a sentient being. She is not beholden to instructions or demands. You say Alt is more intelligent than a human, but you don't actually believe that. This is made even more clear by your analogy: That is a stupid interpretation of that request. Alt is *SMARTER than a human*. So she wouldn't interpret that request in a stupid way, or else she would be *STUPIDER than a human*.
As far as the Arasaka tower assault, there's no not-dark way to discuss this, but how would you destroy a company? Would you physically destroy it's headquarters? That clearly doesn't work; Arasaka tower was rebuilt and actually gained sympathy from the people for that. A company is a group of workers, and if you kill every worker, you destroy the company. If there are no employees, workers, bosses, managers, janitorial staff, filing clerks, or CEO's, that company no longer exists. And every employee of Arasaka is complicit in it's crimes, to extremely varying degrees of course, but working at Evil Inc. is not a morally neutral action. Arasaka is one of the worst threats to humanity and earth that has ever existed, and destroying it would be benevolent. I'm not saying a scorched earth approach to destroying them is morally incorrigible, but I do think it would be effective. Being scared of Alt because she's powerful is fine, but only if you're scared of everyone in the game who's powerful. Are you scared of Viktor Vektor? He could easily have killed V several times over. But you're not scared of him, even though he has total control over whether V lives or dies multiple times. Alt similarly has total control over whether V dies, multiple times. Neither of them kill you. Neither of them harm you. Neither of them have goals that would encourage them to harm V. They are both *allies* of V. If you want to justify a fear, you have to prove that it's a valid interpretation of risk. Is being afraid of the Sun valid? Is being afraid of a car valid? Is being afraid of a gun valid? Is V a person who is afraid of *any* of these things that could easily kill them? Alt is not evil, Alt is not an actionable threat to V, and being terrified of her is based on misunderstanding her.

@@DannyWakahisa these are all valid points, and I welcome the discussion. On engrams in context of Cyberpunk 2077, whether the player's engram is actually still the player is conveniently ignored so as not mar the sense of closure in the ending. It's sensible writing not to have the player look too closely at that little blip. Because having players recognise that your character actually dies no matter what is a terrible end for their efforts in trying to survive. The writing also makes the same choice to treat Johnny's engram as though it were for all intents and purposes Johnny himself. That said, once or twice V reminds him that he is in fact dead and just an engram. So it is relevant, but not the focus of the writing. We can be reasonably certain from Johnny's reactions that engrams still behave fairly human-like still.
We definitely can't say that same for Alt. Iirc in game, Alt admits that she isn't the same person anymore. We can't actually be sure how she thinks at all, as a matter of fact. It could be the same as in life. Or it could be drastically different due to engram-ification or her experiences beyond the Blackwall. Nevertheless the fact that she slaughtered all those people without metaphorically blinking should make anybody wary. Actually whether she is still human or not is moot, capacity for mass slaughter is always concerning. But then again, most characters in game, including V, are hardly paragons of virtue either. But I wager most people here are not killers in real life so it unsettles us players.
Let's expand further: On concentration of power, let's consider government structure: checks and balances exist precisely because the consequences of a malevolent power vastly outweigh the boons of a benevolent one. So latent corruption or not, check and balances should be in place just in case. Who is the balance for the power displayed by Alt in our Arasaka assault scenario, if she decides it were in her best interests to kill everybody off like she did the Voodoo Boys? Perhaps Netwatch, if they act in time. But it is highly likely by the time they do, everyone in that tower would be dead. So yes, the point here is that callousness is not something we'd like to see in an entity with absolute power in that scenario. It's not about whether they choose to exercise it, the potential for abuse is clearly there. Who could realistically stop her? She demonstrated multiple feats of unparalleled power. On the topic of risk, I'd be afraid of all of these. I think any sensible person would. Risk is about potential, not intent.
How would you destroy a company? I'm usually on the same side as you, but for the sake of argument, I do not believe the ends justify the means here. For Alt it should be trivial having breached the network to siphon off all Arasaka funding, delete or destroy company data or something similar that would completely cripple its operations without violating the general directive of avoiding unnecessary slaughter. But I don't know, it's just my opinion. We can agree to disagree.

Alt became what humans are searching for, digital immortality. I think she achieved the ultimate power honestly. This what Arasaka was trying to do. Johnny killed her by mistake, but in truth he released her from the binds of mortality. She survived what no one else could, living beyond the blackwall. She easy just transfer herself to robot shell if she ever had the desire to return to realspace. But why would she even want to. Endless knowledge exists in cyberspace. She is definitely what I'd consider a cybergoddes.

I love this debate to be honest. At its core, both those ideas come from the concept that in the process of becoming an engram, you lose something precious.. yourself. With all your humanity and biological impulses. Your soul, your compassion. Your identity. Her comments to V are as much - the engram is not exactly you. Sure there is code to simulate emotions and your prior values and what not, but you can't deny that the original biological and hormonal underpinnings are forever gone. The engram is basically a simulacrum, acting on your behalf per how it thinks you will act, believing itself to be you. So there is no escaping mortality in the literal sense. You die. Something based on you is then born. It's more than possessing special powers, you die all the same no matter whether you choose to be incarnated as an engram or face death as a human. I believe that digital immortality doesn't actually exist. It's very much like having a digital child in your image. That entity might think exactly like you, but it is not you.
We know that Alt is no longer actually Alt Cunningham, but something else now. Alien. We can see this from the Panam ending where she slaughters noncombatants without any remorse. So she's no longer really human, does not have compassion anymore. She assists you not because she likes you, but only to consume the souls in Mikoshi. Previously during interaction, her responses to V are also pretty cold, all things considered, a rather alien-like manner. So we have no idea how she thinks at all, and fear of the unknown is a very real thing. As you should be, dealing with what is, for all intents and purposes, a sentient, unfeeling all-powerful cyberspace goddess.
