Information for everyone, the small line that costs to disconnect is the one that goes from the filter to the canister, another easier technique is to disconnect it directly from the canister and remove the filter with everything and line attached to it, already outside it is easier to disconnect than in such a small space!

Very helpful, great suggestion on using the vacuum line rubber plugs to prevent leaking while you are replacing. Thank you!

Very nice over view of the w163 Fuel Filter Job. It's a shame Mercedes buried the filter in such a hard to reach location. My only conclusion is that they are really trying to make it hard on the DIY home mechanic & to drive owners to the Dealers for service work !
I had a Nissan Maxima years ago it was an 1985 but Fuel Injected like the ML, and it had a similar looking Metal Hi-Pressure filter, located underhood. A blind man could have changed it in 15 minutes. I was mounted in plain sight, easy access.
I LOVE my Mercedes for it's virtues, but some of it is hard to live with. I'll say the "In tank" pumps are just a bad plan. The Dodge gas engine trucks & vans are about as bad. You have to drop a tank to change the pump. At least the Mercedes has a cover to do it through. Some Ram truck & van owners cut an access panel in their bed or body to avoid dropping the tank.
Anyhow, we put up with this stuff because we avoid New Car Payments, and get to KNOW our ride real well - which is a good feeling ! Cheers everybody & thanks again for the video.

At 8:58 there are special pliers to disconnect that. A Mercedes service tool basically. I got mine along with filter for $12 or so. Haven't used it yet - but will soon.
Its a hassle of course cause not everyone will have one on hand !

Great job showing all phases of this HEADACHE of a job.
Boy, what were MB engineers THINKING - I've worked on dozens of various makes / models but this is hands down, the WORST placement + BIGGEST hassle fuel filter change of all.
    My only guess is:
    - 100% rigged afterthought at design time
    OR
    - make job SO difficult, even DIY guys will come to Dealer for the work.
    What do you think ?
How hard was it for you ?
For me, releasing clips in such a small space - so fussy - was a HUGE hassle.
Dang, MB why NOT regular clamps & braided steel / fuel lines ?

      Good for you !
16" Hemostats - is that a long reach surgical pliers ?
How did you employ them ?
From what position or angle ?
If you share details you'll help us all out.

      @Graham Davis
God bless you Graham for an amazingly detailed reply.
I will be sure to bring your comment & points of action to my ML so I can follow the steps visually.
I have the Mahle brand filter - purchased from FcpEuro years ago for $45, plus the connection pliers.
I'll have to order / find those looong Hemostat pliers.
All my dissasembly is done, I just couldn't undo these impossible to reach connectors.
One work around I had figured would work:
The OD of the OEM nylon fuel line on the w163 is 8mm or 5/16".
Standard Gates fuel line slips right over it.
One COULD remove the inboard rocker undercover & expose the hidden fuel line a few inches forward of fuel filter & cut it, which would allow filter to remove from it's perch.
THEN, it should be easy to remove connector & replace filter, then use a small piece of rubber 8mm fuel line to "splice" connect the cut piece of factory Nylon line, using either screw clamps or band clamps with tool.
But I'll try your method first !
      Thanks again my friend !

At 8:00 you are struggling to remove the clip that holds on the line end. Here's a video that shows EXACTLY how to remove the main clamps onto the top of fuel pump. I wasn't able to tell from your view, but is this the same clamp or different type clip ?

15:57 you don’t replace the transfer case. Replace the motor that engages 4 low. I had to replaced mine. Easy fix.

Also ATF+4 for Mopar / Dodge also works as thx to DamlierChrysler the 722.6 Benz Tranny is also same as NAG 1 Tranny for same year like 1995-2009 Dodge RWD vehicles.
$$$ saver as ATF+4 can be had at WM in quarts or O'reilly Auto in Gallons !

Sometimes just the filter is blocking fuel flow and the pump is fine. An OE pump that is working should be left unless proven defective. A simple fuel pressure test + diagnosing precise symptoms can discern between failing pump & blocked filter. At the very least, do the filter first if you are sure it's old / never been changed. Mine is finally blocked at 20 years old - mine is a 02 ML500 @ 185,00 miles. Don't know if it's original but I've had this Truck for 6 years & 80,000 miles so the filter is at least that old. Most fuel filters are good for 75-100,000 miles & 5 years IF you don't get into some contaminated fuel. Anyhow, just some ideas for others to consider. I do like how he's showing the process of taking out the seat for access.
