This is my dream knife. Literally, I envisioned almost this exact blade shape and size in my head a week before I learned of this thing's existence. Can't wait for an excuses to get this knife!!!
i happened to get a little behind on Nutn`s knife reviews, and then i saw this in my sub box. i watched all the previous reviews (a weeks worth) and finally get to see this. cant tell you how long ive waited for this nutn.
It's very hard for one designer to get so many things right in their creations. Ron did an outstanding job with the Hoodlum and Punk blades. And his choice of steel is spot on. I too believe that you can't go wrong with 1095 and 5160 carbon steels. They both steels will withstand the most arduous tasks and not let you down. Another great review. Thanks!
Cheers from Spain, Nut!! Fabulous music, indeed!! Keep up the good work, mate! Some day, we will change here in the Eurounion the matter of the right to bear arms ... and your thoughts will be remembered. Best from Canary Islands.
Great! I've haven't had a 1095 or 5160 carbon steel blade rust on me yet. I always strop them with the bare skin of my forearm (and sometimes my heel) before I put them in their sheaths. You can feel when they are perfectly dry and they must pick up some small amount of oil from my skin as well to never rust. It is like horse hoof tinder stropping edge care, drying and rust protection for free. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I strop my shaving razors on my forearm and get 50-100 shaves .
As far as the Shock Mitigation System goes...I can only speak to the Hoodlum's performance...I have found a difference between it and other large knives such as the Ontario RTAK II and others. The Hoodlum does vibrate less when batoning in my experience. Can't speak about the Punk though. Just ordered one and am looking forward to using it.
I'm not the biggest hatchet advocate however the Buck hoodlum is 14 plus oz. There are plenty of good hatchets at that weight and a little less. The kershaw hatchet is 14 oz and comes with a plastic sheath.
the hollow spot reminds me of the DPX HEST knife, r the handle scales routered at all. i could see it working the same way to put a washer on the lanyard and putting some basic survival contants in there like some hooks and line, some foil and other survival essentials
yeah got the fixed blade part covered with an ESEE izula 4 and 6 :D Shipping won't be a problem as my friend has acces to a special diplomatic shipping form
In my experience with the Punk, I agree with your criticisms. I find it battons well with soft wood but not so well with the mostly hard woods we get in Australia. My evaluation of it is not over, but I think it's a great camp knife, or companion blade used alongside other tools. Excellent review.
I keep a braided paracord lanyard on my BK2 that I let dangle when I don't need it, and flip it up on to the handle for comfort while chopping. Works pretty good.
If I may add, the SOG NW Ranger as a competitive option. Mine's going out with me in it's first trip longer than a dayhike, based on your review. Thanks!
Nutn... You my friend have sold too many knives to me with your reviews, I can't resist a good blade. Keep up the good work, more backpacking trips please they are awesome!!
Awesome review Nutn, I think that the Punk would be great to carry on your belt and the Hoodlum would be great for your backpack. I'm generally tool heavy when I go up into the mountains just in case one fails. I plan on buying the Punk and the Hoodlum when I can based off of your reviews and testing and plan on using them as a set. Thanks for the great review, take care!
Looks like this is my new fixed blade for hiking and canoeing. I had a POS Gerber that I tried to do that to and the first one snapped the tip. Sent it back and got a new one and surprise surprise it snapped in half the second time. Boo Gerber, Yay Buck.
Nice looking knife! I like the high carbon steels but here in south florida they can take a beating with all the moisture. Never the less I stil use them. Thanks for the video.
Cool blade Nutn! Glad to see the review on the little brother, and like others have mentioned, the music was sweet too! Lovin' the output of vids these days, hope you can keep 'em coming. Maybe some sledgehammer shoots...?
Less than 8 oz for a mid-size survival knife? That's pretty incredible! I'm torn between this great knife and the Blackbird SK-5. I'm looking for around a 5-6" blade that is very tough, but lightweight. Both seem like excellent choices, and great value for the money.
Awesome vids Nunt! I'm getting little confused here. if we go deeper into the wilderness doesn't that mean more self reliance and ability to do tasks easier and having suitable tools. my approach goes like this i go for multi day hike or deep i take large fixed blade or axe, take small camp/woodcraft knife, and take spare medium size fixed blade just in case. if i loose or break main tool i can use spare one. it's slightly more weight but for main tool, i'm willing to take it just to be safe
Hay Nutn just popped in to see what you had for us/me today, looks like you really put that knife through some serious testing, great job, thanks for all your hard work bringing us these reviews. God Bless Kevin
matter of cost most likely as always, because a sheath can add a lot of cost if you aren't careful. Plus i don't care who makes what if the quality control is good thats all I care about and the materials used.
Does anyone know why the Hoodlum has a notch in the spine of the blade? I have seen a video of the hoodlum actually breaking at that notch, it just seems pointless, correct me if I am wrong.
Firgive me if the review allready exists, But what about the SOG fast hawk? Its a light weight tactical multi-POU tactical axe at a great price point. like to see your take on it!
Looks like a knife that I will considered. What more can you ask for out of a knife. Great blade, nice handle, and it comes with It's own save the world music! Hay, It's a Buck knife Gotta love it
Have you had any experience with the Schrade Extreme Survival 3? (SCHF3N) I'm looking for a good fixed blade and I like the PUNK, RAT3 and the Schrade3. Great job on the knife show, BAD ASS!!!
I would buy something like a SOG Aegis for around $75 / $80 and a separate fixed knife for survival. Since the Fixed knife is alot heavier and requires more hassle to ship overseas, its better to buy in the netherlands itself. (kniveandtools) Fixed knife are not that expensive there. While the Aegis is not common in The Netherlands. Be aware of the weapon laws here though, a fixed blade has more rules to follow then folder. Anyway my recom. SOG Aegis or Microtech SOCOM if you want to spend more.
hey Nutn, have you did a review on the cold steel oss or osi ? there r just so many videos hard to find certain ones. if you havent it would be great if you did. Thanks for the awesome vids. spent all day watching...lol
Sorry Nutn but I have to disagree with you on the usefulness of the utility pouch on the sheath, I've spent a lot of time in the forest in Northern Saskatchewan and while I was a Camp Director/Canoe Guide for a Scouts Camp for 2 years. Granted I wasn't using the Punk (Chris Reeve's Yarabourgh) I would always carry the SOL Blastmatch in the pouch and have a fire baggy riding in my cargo pocket and I was good to go.
Hey NutnFancy. How do you feel about the Ontario 12inch machete? To me, it appears to be an economical solution to a situation demanding a larger blade. You can't beat 1095 steel and USA made at that size for under $20.
You have footage on some of the Spyderco Hossom knives and I know they're not available anymore and you don't like creating demand for knives that aren't in production, but do you plan on releasing any of that? If I recall correctly, the handle created hot spots for you?
lol, what do you think it was? (without google translate that is) maybe even better to reply your own thoughts on the matter. By the way, when are you going to do some artic shooting again with your dad? Like he did with buggetnuster on the M1 Garand Artic Ops video? Such a cool video that was..
I really like the look of that blade. I have been a RAT/ESEE guy for a while but I think I am going to have to try out the punk. Thanks for the review.
does it matter that it is hollow grind? i'm thinking about buying me a thug... i think 7 in thug is a perfect... i was thinking about buying BK7 but i've switched over to the thug. but i cannot stop thinking about the thug being hollow instead of FFG. tell me about your piece of mind please.
i think he could take the bigger blades on his hikes if he wasnt carrying 30 other knives to test up with him lol but its all for us tnpers so keep it coming nutn there awsome videos you have been cranking out and we enjoy them , the longer the better more thought and more information
now im not saying it is a bad knife but why would you need a 10 inch Knife i mean if ur wood spliting just get an axe like a decent axe if you dont like a large size get a hatchet (small hand axe) you can fit it on a belt or a backpack and is small enough to do small tasks and yet still large enough to do small to medium chopping of wood if done right
Maybe others have said this and maybe I've missed a passed video, but how about a cheaper good quality fixed blade survival knife? Anybody feel free to throw out options/pass on info. Thanks!
This is my dream knife. Literally, I envisioned almost this exact blade shape and size in my head a week before I learned of this thing's existence. Can't wait for an excuses to get this knife!!!

Another great review. Thanks!
If I remember correctly, there is a promotion going on over at buck where they're giving away a couple punks for memorial day.
I'm more of a fan of the 5 to 6 inch fixed blades.
Cheers from Spain, Nut!! Fabulous music, indeed!! Keep up the good work, mate! Some day, we will change here in the Eurounion the matter of the right to bear arms ... and your thoughts will be remembered. Best from Canary Islands.
Love the "thunk" of the knife into log at the end with the exit music. Thanks again for sharing!
One of my favorite reviews you have done Nutn. Still debating on whether to order this or the hoodlum! Eventually I'd like to own both though!
Great! I've haven't had a 1095 or 5160 carbon steel blade rust on me yet. I always strop them with the bare skin of my forearm (and sometimes my heel) before I put them in their sheaths. I love it!!! The Hoodlem is awesome and now, as you say, a little brother! They just look so perfect together.
super stoked the did it! i remember the original sketch Mrs. Hood showed you in the legacy vid. I think i just found me a survival blade.
yeah got the fixed blade part covered with an ESEE izula 4 and 6 :D
Shipping won't be a problem as my friend has acces to a special diplomatic shipping form

Buck knives are all top notch...love the design of the punk and hoodlum. Way to go Buck!
Nutn... You my friend have sold too many knives to me with your reviews, I can't resist a good blade. Keep up the good work, more backpacking trips please they are awesome!!

Why do I carry a large fixed blade you ask? Because carrying a mature beaver is simply out of the question.
Thanks for the video.
i have a hoodlum and if the steel is anywhere near the hoodlum, its incredibly the edge holding capability
Cool blade Nutn! Glad to see the review on the little brother, and like others have mentioned, the music was sweet too! Lovin' the output of vids these days, hope you can keep 'em coming. Maybe some sledgehammer shoots...?
Man with the hollow gring on the thug it's a beast and holds up to anything u thow at it
I went out of town for the weekend and I am pleasantly surprised at all the new vids I need to catch up on. Awesome knife!
I love the intro music. It's so heroic and epic.
As Nutn says "Your mileage may vary." If you want to pack an axe, go ahead. No one can tell you you're wrong. It's just a different system

Wife bought this for me for valentines day! This is in my edc pack all the time and is one of my favorites!
Awesome vids Nunt!

I actually just got back from re-watching the hoodlum video. Still love that music.
I think it would be awesome to have both the hoodlum and the punk for my personal collection. I love them.
Hay Nutn just popped in to see what you had for us/me today, looks like you really put that knife through some serious testing, great job, thanks for all your hard work bringing us these reviews. God Bless Kevin
Music is like a 60's TV Western Series.
I like it.
Hey NUTN....Enjoyed your Buck Punk knife review so much....I just ordered one!!!!! Keep up the good work and keep em coming....
matter of cost most likely as always, because a sheath can add a lot of cost if you aren't careful.

Rusted after one evening of rain last weekend. Still trying to get the rust off :( still love the blade!
if you go watch his "Why Big Knives Don't Suck" video he talks about that subject in depth. You may find it of interest.
Nice video as always. What kind of shades do you usually wear on your backpacking trips?
The lifetime warranty counts for alot.
Hey nutnfancy, do you have any backpacking trips planned soon? Really like those those vids! Thanks!
Do you think the notch in the larger Hood weakens the structure? Great knife videos!!!!!!!
Firgive me if the review allready exists,
But what about the SOG fast hawk?
Its a light weight tactical multi-POU tactical axe at a great price point. like to see your take on it!
Looks like a knife that I will considered. What more can you ask for out of a knife. Great blade, nice handle, and it comes with It's own save the world music!
Hay, It's a Buck knife
Gotta love it
Well....that would be a great test case for the Edge Pro Apex...LOL. Wow. Talk about putting a knife to work! Another awesome vid nutn! Thanks!
Have you had any experience with the Schrade Extreme Survival 3? (SCHF3N) I'm looking for a good fixed blade and I like the PUNK, RAT3 and the Schrade3. Great job on the knife show, BAD ASS!!!
Two of the only Buck knives i'd consider.
I would buy something like a SOG Aegis for around $75 / $80 and a separate fixed knife for survival. can also be used for getting a billy can off the fire
HA HA HA such a tough life for the mountain dog!!
hey Nutn, have you did a review on the cold steel oss or osi ? there r just so many videos hard to find certain ones. if you havent it would be great if you did. Thanks for the awesome vids. spent all day watching...lol

It's a huge shame and loss to the knife world that Hood died.
Surprised you didn't compare it to a Benchmade Nimravus. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the Buck Punk. They look a lot alike.
Get ready in May for TMPs "Blade Extravaganza".
I'm looking for a heavy duty edc/survival folder.
I would be prefer to buy it in a store, because in that case my friend could pick it up.
Hey NutnFancy. How do you feel about the Ontario 12inch machete? To me, it appears to be an economical solution to a situation demanding a larger blade. You can't beat 1095 steel and USA made at that size for under $20.
Great review dude!!
Thanks
I wanna see Llama Trek 3... I'm sure it's not ALL blade testing.. right?
I like the punk a lot, but also love the tops pasayten light traveler....i can't decide which i want to buy.
You have footage on some of the Spyderco Hossom knives and I know they're not available anymore and you don't like creating demand for knives that aren't in production, but do you plan on releasing any of that? If I recall correctly, the handle created hot spots for you?
every nutnfancy video i end up watching 3/4 or > in the small screen then end up going fullscreen just for the last few minutes lol
Nutn, that view at 5:30 is amazing. Where do you find these places. I live in stupid fat ugly Florida.
I think if your looking at this blade look at ontarios sp gen2 line, I have the sp43 and sp47, awesome knives.
been waitin for this review.... thanks so much sir
I like what you said "If it can span it..it can do it"!!!
I know this is a goofy question, but does anyone by chance know what show that theme song is off of?
top 5 videos for sure! and that is some righteous steel.
i had a knife addiction then i got over when i ran out of money...
nutn i like large survival knives but i dont go in the woods without my axe
punk vs RAT5 (NOT the ESSE, i dont like the blade redesign)...what do you guys think is a better for a camp utility knife?
lol, what do you think it was? (without google translate that is) maybe even better to reply your own thoughts on the matter.
By the way, when are you going to do some artic shooting again with your dad? Like he did with buggetnuster on the M1 Garand Artic Ops video? Such a cool video that was..
I like the Hoodlum but the notch in the blade turns me off. Whats the point of it?
Been looking forward to this one, what a great knife!
If you take off the handles, would they fit in the external pocket of the sheath?
definetly the best blade i own is the hood punk great video man enjoyed the vid man
I really like the look of that blade. I have been a RAT/ESEE guy for a while but I think I am going to have to try out the punk. Thanks for the review.
Hoodlum, rat, or Becker? Out of those three, which would you choose? I like the punk, looks sweet.
Becker
I love the competitive options. Def my favorite part!!!
does it matter that it is hollow grind? i'm thinking about buying me a thug... i think 7 in thug is a perfect... i was thinking about buying BK7 but i've switched over to the thug. but i cannot stop thinking about the thug being hollow instead of FFG. tell me about your piece of mind please.

nutn can you PLEASE do a review of the kabar becker bk15! I beg you.
Nice video nutn, as always! Keep it up man!
Ka-Bar large heavy bowie in that steel and with that handle. That'd be legit.
girlfriend just told me to go to a knifaholics anonymous meeting:P lol good stuff nutnfancy, lovin' all the vids, keep up the great work :D
You should review the KABAR zombie knives.
now im not saying it is a bad knife but why would you need a 10 inch Knife i mean if ur wood spliting just get an axe like a decent axe if you dont like a large size get a hatchet (small hand axe) you can fit it on a belt or a backpack and is small enough to do small tasks and yet still large enough to do small to medium chopping of wood if done right
Hey, how long has Welches been sponsoring TNP? (see the top right corner?)
What`s your opinion of the Buck Thug? Reveiw?
looks like i have two more to ad to my collection!
The music is awesome! Great choice.
do you ever plan on reviewing the px4Storm?
Maybe others have said this and maybe I've missed a passed video, but how about a cheaper good quality fixed blade survival knife? Anybody feel free to throw out options/pass on info. Thanks!
This knife is exactly what i am looking for my only concern is the tip is it too brittle? because i like a strong tip im worried that it will break.
Nice knife, but at the current price point its too high, the is Punk a few dollars shy of a Hoodlum for 5 inches less on the blade.
I will take this review as a stand in for my awaited ESEE 6 review. =]
Awesome review on a great knife... this one is going on my list... thx for ur hard work
