- Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. Metallica's current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine, who formed Megadeth after being fired from Metallica, and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.

Metallica IS today's music. Ever notice how 80% of these compilations are songs written prior to the early 90's? That's because these guys' work are by and large just as crappy as the rest of them. Nothing Metallica has done since the black album has been anywhere near the commercial success as their early work. Sad But True 😁

I agree that after the black album they and other metal bands Ozzy, Dio, Tool(ok not metal but in the same vein), and megadeath (to a lesser degree) but you cant compare the quality of music in the late 60s to the mid-80s compared to the trash they turn out today...

64 here and loving it. Sadly I have to say unfortunately it took me like 30 years to realize what a great artist he is. But i listen to them constantly now. I wish i could catch a show in the midwest somewhere but it looks like Chicago is as close as they will get.

I heard Master of puppets in I believe freshman high school and been hooked ever since. Saw them at the Oakland Colosseum day on the green with Queensryce, Faith no more, and Soundgarden. Badass Concert but my favorite concert ever hands down was AC/DC
