Thanks for admitting that you have been scammed. The scammer is hoping that you are to embarrassed to talk about it. The only way to shut them down is telling everyone. If you're silent then they win. Honest people are not as common as you think.
There are always challenges with life in the Philippines. We visited Dumaguete and other places this summer, and the truth is that maintenance is lacking, and everything is deteriorating, whether it’s large shopping centers or other facilities. The price level even surpasses what we pay here on the Costa del Sol in Spain. The reality is that in the struggle for survival, you risk being cheated by anyone, whether you’re trying to buy something, build a house, buy a small piece of land, start a business, or anything else.
You have experienced what I've been telling these other bloggers about dealing with people here in the Philippines you are 1000% correct the biggest problems are contractors you find what you think is a good honest contractor which I guarantee you absolutely none of them are you handover good chunk of money to get going They come in they work for a couple days and you're fighting to get them back some of them actually walk away and you can't do nothing about it you're out your money I keep telling guys don't do it you will be scammed 1000% I had it happen to be on property purchasing a vehicle and just in general anything I buy I get scammed
Good point paul! my profession is a buyer/purchaser for last 8 years.. i made over 1500 private online purchases from China to EU during 25 years and failure rate was about 75%... managable. Since i moved to PH i have made about 250 online purchases during 10 months.. failure rate is about 90%.. not managable. i thought i cannot fail more in online purchasing than before... i was wrong. The first strange shopping word i learned here was " Not available sir". Be aware... good business is not a their best asset :)
So true guys, my friend had a successful business in the Philippines, very switched on regarding scams, paid a large sum of money to have a commercial vehicle built, very professional operator, went back to the factory to check on the progress, factory was empty, a lot of people lost a lot of money, so I am not surprised when hear the issues you mentioned, what a nightmare,
going back to the 80's a guy built a resort, for the business permit the govnor of the island wanted a 40% cut. the guy torched the place rather than pay and left the island . the burned out resort was a scar on the costal road for many years abandoned and feared haunted. more recently a swiss guy build a flying school next to the airport control tower, hangers, classrooms he spent a lot of money. they refused his permit saying he must use philippine planes (they don't make planes) idk the final outcome but it never opened. it was a wonderful idea. expat since 88 many stories. never spend in phil what you cant throw away coz that's all you are doing , burning money. keep a low profile if you get big someones gonna wanna cut of the action.
Rule #1. Never let them get ahead of you, with your money! Don’t pay in advance ever! Pay in the rears! This worked for me in business in the USA and here in the Philippines
I love myself and my peace of mind so much to NEVER EVER be involved in real estate, business, any thing that MAY take away my peace of mind. Suffering is optional. I choose no suffering. It’s a foreign country with completely different laws, cultural understandings, misunderstandings. Don’t know why anyone would jeopardize their peace
I think too many people go out there desperate or wanting something so bad they get used. Going to another country where you have very little rights and expecting to be a businessman is not going to end well for 99%. Same with going out there expecting to marry a supermodel. People know these things and will take advantage of you for it.
Been there done that. Watch out for the Sea Gulls in that location. They will steal your lunch if you sit down outside. Salamat! Hold it!!! I just commented on an advertisement from Vancouver Canada. There's ads on all of our channels. Anyway I'm glad to see you both in good spirits despite a few things going sideways.
Love your channel Baby May! Great Topic! Respectfully, may I add that folks should be cautious about taking advice from any and all RUclips Experts! I love Baby Mays channel because the vids are so chill. Unfortunately many RUclipsrs especially in the Philippines have become 'Legends In Their Own Mind' I really enjoy and respect folks who share their experience rather than coming across as a 'Know It All' In the end this is just entertainment. "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few". - Shunryu Suzuki
Paul and Baby Mae, dispute the charge with your credit card company. This Marine don't take any trash from scammers. I'm old Philippines hand since mid-70's.
Thank you Baby Mae and Paul for sharing this video, and being brave to share your thoughts and warnings about these things. It takes guts to call out folks (even unnamed) for being bad apples. Keep up the good work. I'll be back in December, see y'all around.
These are the reasons that we as the foreigners need to stop paying top dollar for stuff out here. We keep paying these higher prices and keep loosing money and getting scammed and this is the exact reason we should be paying much less for things. I have been out here for three years and I am married and we have a son and another son on the way and want to buy some property but every single lot that I have looked at has had some type of issue and we havent purchased yet because we can't find a lot where we feel like we arent getting scammed or lied to.
The builder discussion is spot on. No builder will complete any contract to the expectations of the expat or the original contract or quotation. Best bet is if you can find a family member or family friend. Even then, prepare to spend about 20% more than the quotation at least. Stay patient and know you were asking for this when you started the build.
It’s called greed! If someone doesn’t have enough income to live on, they shouldn’t be there. This happens in the US. I have a realtor friend who knew somebody who was selling their house with the promise of a huge payout when it’s sold. Turns out he had sold it 4 previous times. He got my friend for $14,000. Paid his mortgage for 2 months and made repairs to the home to get ready for sale. Took him to small claims court got a judgment, but a judgment is only as good as the papers it’s written on. Lost the money with no recourse.
Fraudsters are lucky that most other people obey the law. Back in the 80s, I met some dubious characters and one time discussed the prices in their industry. It surprised me how affordable it would be to have someone roughed up and even putting a hit out on someone was within my means.
Hi Paul, I bought the time kettle because Geo was promoting it but I bought the wrong one evidently there’s two different miles because I wanted the one that translates Tagalog to English and English to Tagalog and I will buy the other one, but you might point that out when you do the commercialit’s a fine product but most purchasing the product probably want the same thing I want for translation in the Philippines from Tagalog to English and English to Tagalog. Love your videos I’m glad that you’re doing better. I was praying for you.
Good to see you up and posting again. Absolutely, give the tea kettle a try as you will be able to use it if you visit other countries locally like Thailand, Vietnam, etc.
The easiest and most scams in Foreign Countries occur between other Expats. Its common theme here in Thailand also. Very seldom hear about a local native doing a major scam against a Foreigner. The typical scam involving a Restaurant or Bar are endless. Guys having tons of money but zero experience running a business.
Good to see you.. no pun intended. 😎 I have Timekettle. Rarely used, but its nice. Dont talk too fast and speak clearly. Had it a couple years. It's probably improved a lot
Yes mate them Ai translators are pretty cool things, the better ones are also self learning on actual slangs of the languages spoken, many many people will be very interested to fully understand their partners, and even used in business
A hundred years ago, colonial powers from Europe and the United States came and invested money for businesses in SE Asia. It was a struggle to get the product and money back out of the country even then. The locals got upset with the situation and owners and eventually the business owners abandon their land and had to leave. Some successes however are Dole, Robinson Stores and a couple foreign fish canneries. Great observations.
Well, you can't tar everyone with the same brush. It's all about due diligence. Do all the full checks (like with the Land Registry and city hall, in the case of the restaurant case). Only invest in a business with a verifiable track record. And if you can't find the necessary records, DON"T HAND OVER YOUR MONEY. I've lived out here for 36 years and I've seen and heard all sorts! BTW, The restaurant business always suffers high failure/turnover rates, wherever you are based.
I learned on my first attempt to have a trike built here that if your not here its not going to work even if they're honest. Something will always go wrong and they will just deal with it instead of tell you. They will solve the problem in a way you would never do it. Even the honest ones are just light years different in thinking from you. They dont communicate the same and dont tend to be nearly as disciplined as a teenager from the US. Any little distraction is an excuse. They will never tell you, I don't know. You have to be the boss and manager. There are mostly honest people here you just have to help them stay that way.
Never pay any contractor monies upfront. You buy the materials and have them delived COD. We built our bahay owner builder, and our inlaw was an engineer. Overall stayed on the budget. We did a few cosmetic upgradea later on. Far better experience then I had in Mexico and America. We got scammed onced with Lazada when one of their TV supplier circumvented around them and wanted a cash payment to Palawan. Multiple scammers and fake ad sites. Never use ANY contractors in the Philippines to do anything. Upfront monies will disappear never going into the project.
I know you have blackouts. Consider a UPS battery back up for the computer at least. For $276, Amazon has many choices, for example: APC UPS 1500VA Sine Wave UPS Battery Backup, BR1500MS2 Backup Battery Power Supply, AVR, 10 Outlets, (2) USB Charger Ports. Also I have communication challenge with my Phillipino spouse who says my hearing is going away and I tell him his English is the problem. I hope your translator works, not only for at home but out in the public. I'd be interested. I'm down in GenSan and there's not alot of English chances here.
It's not always how big the dollar is but how you use it. Seriously; GREED and especially the possibility of easy money too often lead to an absence of good common sense and money that could have been used more appropriately. My 2 cents or 1 penny worth while drinking my morning coffee~ I'm glad Paul looks and seems back to his old but younger self!
Construction business in California even if can sue is somewhat the same. Progress payments are protecting the customer somewhat. The contractor is protected by filing mechanics liens. For small projects pay with credit card, you can always reverse the charge. I passed on having my house built, even by hiring an expediter it was too hassle.
Best bet dont give anyone money until the service is provided no exceptions, i have learned in the philippines dont trust anyone!!! Once they have have your money there promises are down the drain.
The Rule of Order is: The only business in the Philippines is monkey business, whether through strangers, friends or family. Been through this for over 36 years. I lost my dear wife a few years ago and it still didn’t stop until I blocked everyone.
Since you used a credit card contact the credit card company and put in a claim for theft of service/non-reciept of service and see if they can get your money back. Up to you.
Many RUclipsrs are taking on the responsibility of advertising and viewers are not pleased with that and have the option of skipping through if the content is not of interest. When the viewer skips ads, the channel will lose money. The channel can integrate the ad into their lifestyle and I think your use of the ad might just work, but be aware that it would have to be an easy process for the viewer as, again, they can skip through and possibly lose interest.
When building they started to demand payment in advance then extra money, I told them to go. Most builders want to scam you.ill build the next one my self
My wife has been in the USA for 13 years and we still have a problem understanding each other because of her accent. Not to mention google voice search doesn't work for her about 50% of the time.
Last I checked into that product it does not have a downloadable language pack for any filipino dialect. It has to be connected to the internet at all times to translate tagalog etc...
If you have credit card bill that you paid all you have to do is call them and say they never gave the service therefore I was scammed! Can you reverse the charges back to their bank on my card.
Stevie Wonder's white brother. 😅. You can take the car salesman out of the dealership, but you can't take the dealer out of the car salesman. 😅 You better watch out. You're about to encounter the construction industry!

He sold you a concept based on a prototype. I always ask for evidence from existing customers and I never want to be the first customer. Also never pay in full upon first hearing the sales pitch. Time reveals the value of the sales pitch.
Never pay a contractor in full before job is finished
Thanks for admitting that you have been scammed. The scammer is hoping that you are to embarrassed to talk about it. The only way to shut them down is telling everyone. If you're silent then they win. Honest people are not as common as you think.

Great to know you're well Paul.
I know there was one American home builder in your area that seemed to build quality homes in a timely manner but was definitely not cheap

Hi Paul and Mae ❤ Thanks for all the heads up on the scams 👍 Glad yr feeling better Paul.
This is a great job with the explanation of some business practices. Just note, this can happen anywhere. Have a good day.

Paul I have to agree with you 100%
Thank you for your advice!
Paul, dont pay anything until they show up! Then dole out the money by the hour and work completed! No Service, No Money!
Paul. I have a time kettle and use it all the time. It works very well. Recommend highly
I have a TimeKettle translator but I didn't use it in the Philippines. I will probably need it in Thailand and Vietnam.
The most honest business I trust is JR Coco visa consultancy by the BI office in Dumaguete.
THANKS PAUL...TRUTH

you can do a charge back to the credit card and they give you the money back
Why wouldn't you call your CC company and reverse the charge?
When building they started to demand payment in advance then extra money, I told them to go. Most builders want to scam you.ill build the next one my self
Paul when will ya show the new gadjet for translation?
My wife has been in the USA for 13 years and we still have a problem understanding each other because of her accent. Not to mention google voice search doesn't work for her about 50% of the time.
Love you guys ❤️
I would not trust an American Expat if he was in Church Praying,
Last I checked into that product it does not have a downloadable language pack for any filipino dialect. It has to be connected to the internet at all times to translate tagalog etc...
Words To The Unwise since they are probably not going to listen.

Babe Mae eye problems.? Come on Paul! I thought u r looking good! :-)
I've been asking Timekettle a question for the last seven months and have received ZERO response. I give their service dept a big nothing.
You should dispute the credit card charge.... You have documentation that they have not provided the service.
and the cherry on the cake is that if you make the guy that shafted u lose face, he can off you w/o repercussion too
Cancel the transaction with your credit card company

interesting? 🤔 Good morning!
How is the house project going?
You should be able to contact your credit card company and get you money back
Maybe Goldfinger was in on the scam? 😅
haha if you speak 2 languages, you're bilingual. if you speak 3 languages, you're trilingual. What are you called if you speak 1 language? American. 😁. Keep Up the good work Baby Mae.
thanks guys 🙃
Good morning
