Man. This is the exact video I needed, working to setup the video settings on my new X-H2. It's not the S model, as I am more in the photography world than video, but almost everything is directly transferrable to my camera. I really appreciate the level of detail. Great video, John. Have you had issues with exposure stepping and if so, what’s your best tip for avoiding it? Personally I’ve found manual mode with auto iso works best for run n gun.
thank you! I haven't personally had those issues but i hear about it happening with zooming? but yes I do think auto iso would be the solution for smooth exposure changes.
Thank you John, the tips are really useful. I follow all your steps to setup my X-H2s for video shooting (and your video helped me to purchase X-H2s in the end). I have a question on Data Level setting since I am using FCPX, honestly I am very confused on this one as I do not know whether I should pick up Full or Video. I shoot with ProRes LT or H.265 but it looks like I should use "video" instead of "full"? Thank you again. I just can't find or understand the explanation on the article on internet.
Hey Michael sorry for the holiday delay here. I am glad to hear my vids have been helpful!! Basically those two settings are just for data tags, so when you're in ProRes you want 'video' because it will tag the luma levels correctly and then for all other(non-prores) modes you want 'full'. It's odd, but just go with that haha
Thank you for your helpful video! I don't know how I'm missing it, but I cannot figure out how to change the shutter speed and aperture in the custom logs. If they are on auto, I don't know how to turn the auto setting for that off. Also, if I'm on video mood for a custom mode, it doesn't let me change the MOVIE MODE's resolution, but if I change the custom dial to STILL, it will??? Any suggestions?

Amazing video! Learned allot. But I got a question. When in stills mode and I press the small movie record button next to the shutter button the video that gets recorded is completely different from the setup on movie mode. How do I get that to be the same ?
glad to hear that! hmmm I'll have to check into that one, I haven't tried to record while in a photo mode.
Great video.One question: how do you are able to use AE-lock with only Auto ISO? I am trying but it doesn't seem to work when you are in Manual mode.

interesting!! I just tested this on both the XH2s and my XT4 and I had never tried this before, but you're right ISO can't be used by itself for AE-L which seems like a miss? Hmmm. that's weird!

there's a bit too much to cover in that question for a youtube comment, i'm sorry! try to keep iso reasonably low especially if you can get a lower aperture lens to help.
Appreciate your videos alot learning quite a bit from this channel.I would like some advice on choosing memory cards for this camera, has i am planning on getting one soon and i am not used to dual card slots nor the cf express cards choices either. like what size cards would be ideal from your experience etc thank you...
hello there jared! If you check out my description I have links to the affordable CF and SD cards that work for me. I buy 512gb CF and tend toward 128 SD cards and I'm always dual recording, but I swap my SD cards, while keeping the CF card until it's full.

Hi John! Awesome video and worked as an excellent refresher! It was recommended by the channel @BasePivovoar. Been with Fujio since XT3, sports photographer but taking video now more seriously. Question if I may: Noticed that your format card is "on continuous", mime is on "renew" to avoid the issue of the file counting where it comes with a message tha sd card is full when actually it isn't. Wondering if you came across this issue ever? Great work and very detailed specially ion the video side. New to the channel and you have one more subscribe. Looking forward. Cheers
hey carlos! I have run into that issue one time haha it was not fun. but I set to continuous because when you start recording multi-day (longer) projects and it renews everytime then you start ending up with files sharing the same name and it can get confusing fast. So instead, I opt for the solution to only "renew" when formatting cards.

Hey John, thanks for the great video - I'm using Flog2 (iso 1250) and I've noticed some light jumps in my footage when there's less light (dusk outdoor/darker indoor) and I'm trying to figure out what is causing it. When I have good lighting I have zero issues. Thanks for your answer!
Huh, I've never heard of this before, that's very interesting. Can you replicate it consistently? If so, would you want to send a DM via IG with a video of it happening? Do you have natural live view turned on or anything similar?

I've actually found the reason why:
My XH2S shooting mode was set on P/Program, so it was automatically adjusting the exposure/light. All I did was switching it to Manual and it all works perfectly now.
John will you be making one for photography (street)
sadly I'm just not equipped to do that well.

The ISO custom setting was helpful! I mean, the whole video helped me but ISO one stuck out haha 😂
The Camera is so awesome, i just think Fuji should release a Profile composer for PC / MAC or as a proper phone app where one can prepare all his settings and then just transfer them to the camera and have the ability to NAME C1-C7 so when you turn your dial you see a small title where you instantly see what you named that profile.
i've never heard of that before but yeah that would be dope, email them!
Very good video, full of interesting infos. I just received my X-H2s, and using 128gb memory cards (SD and CFExpress). The top screen shows me 2h24m recording time, whatever the video settings are (4K, 1080p, 24fps, 50fps or more ...) do i miss something ? - thank you :)
thank you! hopefully, it can be a help for you. The only thing that will change the recording availability is adjusting the recording data rate. i.e. 100, 200, 360mbps, etc. If you're new to Fujifilm that's one of the fun aspects is that you get to decide how much data you want/need.

John love the channel! Sold an a7s3 because I hate color grading and couldn’t justify the price. Was thinking of xs10 or xt4 for SOOC video. Is the xh2 that much better image wise? I don’t need bells and whistles. Thanks!😊
if you don't need bells and whistles then the XT4 would certainly be enough. as a professional videomaker the tools on the xh2s are valuable but i still love my xt4 and it's still highly capable and i'll continue to use it. I would choose the xt4 though instead of the xs10 because having 10 bit color, even with minimal color correction for mostly SOOC video does make a difference, plus it's a bit more robust camera without being bulky:) thanks for the comment!!

Well actually I’ve done exactly that for 6 years with the sigma 18-35 😂 I’m a one lens pony hahah. but for Fuji native lenses I’d either go with 16-55 f2.8 or 16-80 f4 just depends if you want help in lower light and a little extra bokeh. Oorrr if you really want to save on weight then the 18-55 2.8-4 is such an amazing lens for the price!

You could totally still pick up a prime of your choosing! For video just make sure to choose Fuji lenses with “LM”.
Hmm, are you sure Data Level Settings should be on Full when shooting with the film simulations and H.265? Lots of other places were recommending sticking with Video levels for that setting...
Hey Sameer, That’s a fair question, and I’m no expert, but This has given me the correct data levels when editing inside Davinci. And this is the advice given by Gerald undone which I’ve confirmed in other places as well. That said, I’m open to being wrong! Let me know if you have a resource with clear info, that would be helpful!

hmmm have you added anything yet? because i think you first have to add things inside the "user settings" menu? if i'm not mistaken.

My H-H2S creates a bunch of low resolution files and I can't find the file that most matter, the 4K one :'(

ISO 160 is greyed out for me, 640 is the lowest in my current setup. Confused.
you either are in f-log or have turned on DR400 setting.

Can I ask, why don't you use ProRes?
In a word (or two): Diminishing returns. For me, the value rolls off right after h265 10bit 422 with size/processing/convenience/quality/etc.

I can’t get too the “MY” setting. It’s gray instead of white
You’ll have to add to the My Menu first before!
No matter what I do, I can't open the quad frame on the screen. The HD frame opens but the others do not.
Also, I can't turn on the focus button while shooting video. I can't symbolically see where it's focusing.
these sound like they're in your screen display settings, but i'm afraid I've never had these issues so it's hard for me to help here.

@@johnstamw i watch someone saying to expose the skin with zebra 75% (just let few zebras on it).
@@IsThatYouSimon oh, well you could set them to 75% then allow a few zebras, but that's going to be effectively the same as 85% with no zebras. I guess it's just a matter of preference at that point!

I come from sony and i used to overexposed but never used zebra.
