i was on a southwest 737 yesterday flying home. our landing was incredibly smooth, shout out to the pilot. the moment this plane hits the wall is excruciating to watch. fear and terror from the passengers as the plane skids on the runway, not knowing what to expect as the outcome. so sorry for the loss.
The plane did not strike the perimeter fence. It was a concrete berm built to support the ILS antennas. Because of an in flight emergency, the plane was directed to land in that direction, OPPOSITE to the direction planes normally land on that runway. By design, planes would never have crashed into that berm, because they are supposed to be travelling in the opposite direction.
what is that barrier/building they hit and why is it on the runway instead of material to slowdown runaway airplanes? just questions, please don't take offense, I presume that beyond that barrier is water or residential area - but there should be room for runaway planes to be brought safely to a stop
@@andrewskarupa3099 Yes, thank you. I see that. I guess I just expect there to be nothing alongside the runway. Our big airport has nothing as far as I can see alongside it.
Barriers are very common, Chicago midway, burbank , san diego etc. Placed far beyond for jetblast protection, some for events as this as last resort to prevent loss of life on other side. There usually but not always (expensive) be an emergency collapsible end of runway where as in this case the plane would have sink into the pit possibly saving or lessening the crash. I believe la guardia and many major airports have these. In this particular case, this runway is over 9100 feet long. Bird strike or whatever, landing gear up would indicate hydraulic failure. None the less this airplane based on this video an my 30 year airline experience shows it landing way to far down the runway. They slid maybe 3000 feet before they hit dirt then wall. They should have survived. Will be an interesting investigation.
@andrewskarupa3099 it may have veered but they ran out of runway. The dirt u see is end of runway with blast fence at end. Blast fences are very common. The landing gears did not fully engage. How could birds prevent the landing gears from engaging? This could be another faulty safety concern for Boeing. It’s like when the door on the Alaskan aircraft flew off the plane in mid flight.
This is not a plane crash at all !! It is a picture perfect belly landing - but with the complete inability to break - then followed by the fatal collision with a hard concrete wall akin to a street accident
The inability to brake and the presence of the concrete wall were both the determinant factors in this tragic event. * Inability to Brake: Had the plane been able to brake effectively, it could have potentially decelerated to a stop before impact. This would have prevented the collision entirely. * Presence of the Wall: If the wall had not been there, the plane would have continued moving until it gradually lost speed and came to a stop. While still a serious incident, the outcome would likely have been less catastrophic. Essentially, the tragedy resulted from the unfortunate combination of these two factors. The inability to brake ensured the collision, and the presence of the solid wall maximized the severity of the impact.
The plane is clearly accelerating and surely not losing speed at all the pilots desperately tried to become airborne again and applied full power as for a TOGA to clear the hard concrete obstacle they knew imminent death is awaiting them at the end of the runway...and the collision was head on with almost take off speed ..worst of worst combination
OMG .... very sad to see the plane crash, the landing gear was not deployed. There is no way to slow down the plane. Most probably due to hydraulic failure Condolences to the family of deceased. May their soul rest in peace. From Malaysia
Did you know that astronauts return to Earth from space using parachutes? It's true! While civil aircraft typically have two engines, military aircraft often have four. It's quite rare to hear about a military plane crash caused by engine failure. In principle, if a plane has at least one working engine, it can still fly normally. However, it can be alarming to think about what might happen if that engine breaks down. Aircraft manufacturers choose not to install four engines because it would significantly increase both the purchase price and fuel costs. They could use the additional engines as backups, but that’s not the route they take. There have been designs proposed where the passenger compartment of an aircraft could separate and land using a large parachute if the plane encounters problems in the air. However, airlines and aircraft manufacturers are reluctant to implement such revolutionary changes because they prefer to stick with traditional aircraft designs. Ultimately, their decisions are often motivated by cost-saving measures.
Landing gear and flaps deployed on firstly approach aborted due to bird strike. Why retract them for go around and why ask to land in reverse direction? Why touch down so far along the runway at high speed? Was he attempting to take off and do another go around? Too many questions that won't be answered until a full investigation completed.

Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737-800, crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea on December 29, 2024, resulting in 179 fatalities out of the 181 people on board. The two survivors, both flight attendants, are currently receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition. The crash occurred during a landing attempt when the aircraft overran the runway and collided with a concrete wall, leading to a catastrophic fire. Investigations are ongoing, with preliminary reports suggesting that a bird strike may have caused mechanical issues, including a failure in the landing gear deployment. This incident is the deadliest aviation disaster in South Korea's history.
Survivors may have been in rear facing seats in the back galley, backs to the bulkhead. If pax seats face backwards and stay in place during impact there would be many more survivors. However this particular kind of accident is very rare. I reckon speed at crash site in 150-190mph range. Google map shows a sturdy looking 4 floor hotel about half a mile past the crash site on the same path. Travel time at that speed is around 10 seconds.
In Boeing 737 the engine under the wings are very low, without landing gear it can easily scratch the ground and pull down the engines and the fuel line
Why not continue to fly the plane until ground control develops some kind of emergency landing response plan in an attempt to minimize impending damage and casualties
Looking on Google Earth it can be seen that continuing the runway is a road and not more that 800 meters is the sea. Some hotels exists at the seashore. Probably this is the reason for constructing that wall. Still they could have come with a better solution than a concrete wall. Perhaps some gravel stones would have been better. Considering the fact that the plane slides for a considerable part of the 2.5 km runway and also analyzing the speed of the airplane, most probably would have pledged into the sea. Those 800 meters wouldn’t have been enough.
tons of pilot panick happened here... no fuel dumps seen, at least back gear could have been deployed, touched down already more than half of the runway down... still terrible, but the structure of the airport has very little fault here.
@SoyDracckoPeroElAntiguoXd the wall is on the approach side to that runway too. Pilot asked for permission to land in reverse direction. "At 08:59, the pilot reported that the plane had struck a bird, declaring "mayday mayday mayday" and "bird strike, bird strike, go-around". The pilot then aborted the original landing, retracting the flaps and landing gear, and requested permission to land from the opposite direction. Air traffic control authorised the alternative landing at 09:01 - and at 09:02 the plane made contact with the ground with landing gear and flaps not deployed, coming down at roughly the halfway point of the 2,800m runway at high speed."
I believe the passengers would be alive if it wasnt for that dead man stop at the end of the runway. Plus the plane came down towards the least amount of runway left
