Whenever Dodie sings "now she's given up dancing" I break down sobbing. To have to give up something you love because of something else you think you need is horrible. I can't stand the thought of being held back from singing, or playing the piano, because I'm stuck in a crappy relationship. No matter what people say, keep doing what you love doing (as long as it's legal) and remember that love shouldn't keep you from doing what you're passionate about :)

When i first heard this song i was so touched, it was so beautiful and of course i began crying because i'm a hopeless sap. Then i watched the "i'm angry" video, and so i needed to listen to this again, and oh my lord i began sobbing, angry sobbing for someone thinking it is okay to treat another human being like dodie was treated, angry because poppy isn't aloud to dance, sad because she does what she's told and stays by his side, so so happy when she finds sammy, when she starts dancing again, happy for Dodie, for finding herself again, i am officially a messy rollercoaster of emotions, leave me alone! a need to love this song in peace!

Emma i'm guessing it is somewhat inspired by reality, since it is fairly close to the original story that she told in the angry video, of course only dodie knows the real answer to this
Emma it is what the song is about tho. even the names are the same, except Dodie used the name Poppy instead of her real one. Tommy = tom joseph law (her abusive dicksack ex) and sam = sammy who she dated after breaking up with tom.

I just got out of a very abusive relationship about 5 months ago and what gave me the strength to break it off was seeing my aunt and uncle and their relationship and mine was nothing like it. And I'm now talking to this extremely amazing guy and it's totally different. So this fits my story very well and this is my new favorite song!!!! ♥️♥️♥️

The reliability of this song is unbelievable, describes my relationship last year. A lot of people don't talk about the warning signs it's just "if he hits you leave him" but it builds up to that, with controlling and restricting and like you said walking on egg shells. I loved this song when it first came out and I related to it purely because I was a dancer and I liked the song. I thought it was beautiful and well written.
2 years later I met my Tommy. I struggled for a year with Tommy, I quit dancing. I loved him with all my being to be awfully mistreated in return. I defined myself by him. It took drastic changes to get away.
8 months later, I met my Sam. I have just listened to this song again and related in a completely different way. I am truly touched and I have never sobbed over a song so much in my life. Thank you, Dodie, for this beautiful piece of art work which gives so many of us so much hope. ❤️
