    Some players just fluorish when given the status of the star player in a team. One thing not many people in the US know is that Markkanen was the leader of the Finland national team at the last summer's Eurobasket and that he was HUGE in that role, singlehandedly putting a very limited team into the quarterfinals and with 27.9 PPG (keep in mind that FIBA games have only 40 minutes of playing time), he was the second scorer of the tournament, behind Giannis and ahead of Luka, Schroder and Jokic. In the elimination game against Croatia, he scored 43 points. That's when he gained confidence he could lead a team. By pure chance, he came to a leaderless team in the rebuilding process and was given complete freedom. He knew what to do with that freedom and he continued to do what he did in the national team. That may sound crazy, but I am certain that Eurobasket was the turning point of Markkanen's career.

    • @romeomonteverde
      @romeomonteverde Год назад +26

      Oh we're laughing more at the Clips and the Suns for that. They've wasted a lot too. Sure the Jazz had Malone and Stockton, then williams and boozer. But remember that the Suns got a shot too with Chuck, Kidd, Nash, now CP and Book. Then the Clips have been pushing too with Brand, then CP and Blake, now Kawhi and PG then trying to overstack their roster now but still losing. They just can't get it together, these teams.
      Though I don't blame the Suns/Chuck and Jazz with Malone and Stockton, they had to deal with Jordan.

    Honestly, not as surprised as anyone else. If you watched enough of Markkanen in Cleveland and especially during international play, you would see this coming somewhat. Maybe not to this degree but the signs were 100% there. I'm more surprised by someone like Nik Claxton who went from riding the bench for a contender to being the starting C and a top 5 candidate for DPOY and one of the highest FG%s in the game. Only problem is people don't give a shit about defence when ranking players anymore really.

    I don't see how people are amazed so much about Lauri. He always had this potential though, his first few years in Chicago he was great. Only when they got Lavine and Derozan that we saw him dwindle, but that's because that team treated him like just a wing guy, like how Brandon Ingram and Kuz was when LBJ got there. Same like how Porzingis was when he got to Dallas. They were out of their comfort zones.
    But I do agree that with just this year he's been balling hard. A really quick turnaround. But it does happen, I mean when BI got sent to the Pels he did flourish, so did Kuz with the Wiz.

      Lauri could not have done this two seasons ago. The changes in fitness trining made him now more durable and explosive. That gives also confidence, which combined to Euro-basket confidence boost and great coach is what we see now. In Cleveland he shared the floor with two non-shooting bigs so his role was more limited. It was bigger in the late season with injuries and Lauri showed flashes of getting ack to the career trajectory he left in his sophomore season.

    • @roopetuukkanen1894

      @@janilaitikas907 the only thing i agree is conditioning. He was injury prone in his first years, which definitely played a part but other than that, it always comes down to the system hes in. First two bulls years he had alot More freedom and his play seemed to be improving slowly. After that they made him a three point shooter in his Last season with the bulls and with his time in cleveland. This is the Lauri who we saw in the first 2 seasons but now obviously with More experience and confidence. But my point lies in the fact that if he never got this chance from the jazz, he mightve stayed in the role he was in cleveland for a few more seasons and, in my opinion that wouldve designed the trajectory of his career at that point. Going from a guy who barely cuts in to the basket, to having twice as many posterizing dunks than ANYONE in the league tells you all you need to know. And yes he was always capable of this type of finishing. He just never got comfortable enough.

      I think Hoiberg saw his full talent and to some extend JBB but Lauri last season was still a work in progress to redeem himself. The damage that old Bulls regime did was so bad it slowed him down a lot. Thank goodness he got rid of it and is training in a better manner now again. Last season was his first since his 2nd season I think his body could have held up his doings. He would have been injured a lot in his seasons 3-4 if he tried to do all this stuff. The difference here is that he's healthy and on a team where he's the center of the offense getting consistent minutes. The time leading the Finnish national team also helped him gain confidence and experience going through a tough competitive gauntlet as well. He's going to be around for years to come and if he stays healthy, he could easily play another 10-12 years at a high level.

    Lauri might get traded to go into a full rebuild . But considering they haven't already , who knows

      Unlikely. They have been talking so much about building around Lauri and he, Kessler and Agbaji were untouchables during the trade deadline according to Jazz front office.

      cause jordan clarkson was in the way of that basically. Yea Sexton has the worst court vision Ive ever seen in a guard.

    I don’t think it’s as crazy as people think. MANY people thought this was what Lauri could be but Boylen ruined him in Chicago. Anyone who saw him in Cleveland knew he still had it too. Love your content but I can’t help but feel like this is a casual take lol

    • @furryhoof647
      @furryhoof647 Год назад

      NBA teams have been discarding him for years, they aren't casuals.
      Have you seen Lauri's odds to win MIP from October? Oddsmakers are not casuals.
      People that saw this coming are the exception, not the norm.

    Unexpected...? I knew this guy was a star when he was in Chicago. As a Cavs fan I was wishing they could get him in a trade and was thrilled when they actually did.. Then was pissed when he was part of the package that got Mitchell. I don't know how guys like this are never paid attention to by people claiming to know basketball.....

    It comes down to work ethic in the gym. Yes there's some ability within that person no doubt, but it just comes back to putting your big boy pants on and going to work and getting better. Michael Jordan used to work on something every season every off-season he would come back a better player and if more NBA players did that, then they would be better, but many players get a big contract and they are set. They don't feel like they need to work hard any more.

    It's not just Markkanen, Mikal Bridges, Julius Randle, Zach Lavine, all made similar jumps a lot of players are on the wrong team. Sadly, most of these players are trapped in bad contracts with teams that are bad for them, also many of them get terrible advise from family and agents who are only counting their money.

    • @dawnmusic2002
      @dawnmusic2002 Год назад

      No.... Mikal has improved his counting stats, especially since the trade, but his eFG% has taken a hit. And it's been just over a month. Randle and LaVine never made such jumps.

    Not unexpected at all for people following his career. He just needed a team that would allow him to score and not just shoot 3's. I told Bulls fans they were screwed when they traded him. Bulls used to be a scary young team when he was a rookie but they fucked it up hard with silly trades.
