How could the quantum technology race change our future? - BBC Newsnight

  • There have been recent suggestions that the UK government is underinvesting in new microchip technology compared to the EU or US. But what if they've had a better idea, and are instead backing something that could finish off microprocessors as surely as steam ships left sailing clippers in their wake?
The sector in question is quantum technology, where research suggests a revolution in computer speeds is now attainable.
But is the UK's early investment in the technology of £2.5bn over the next decade - more than the US - enough to ensure it reaps the rewards?
Newsnight’s Science and Technology Correspondent Kate Lamble reports.

This is really great news. But as they said, we need to be very careful and make sure that there are people buying it from the UK. We need to also make sure 100% that we actually keep it within the UK, make sure that it’s given as much funding as possible, and that she’s scale of the products, no matter how much it costs and don’t be scared to spend money on it. We cannot allow this technology to slip through our hands like we have with everything else. This is a chance to actually dominate in something again. We need to make sure the Americans and China don’t get their hands on it and try and make scaled up versions that are better because we haven’t done so ourselves without incentives and we end up just buying from them. Essentially buying our own technology back. We need to make sure we think about long-term profits and benefits for our country rather than short-term drops of big money from the US.

Unfortunately, britain lacks the brains and talents to pull that off. The ship has sailed. The US, China, Japan, skorea, Germany, Russia and many other countries are heads and shoulders above Britain when it comes to the brains and talents for innovation.

Some of the best quantum technology in the UK has been invented by Chinese researchers over here. The difference is the Chinese play fairly, where the US acts in a predatory way. China will invest in the UK to expand our game if you play it fairly yourself. The problem is we keep on giving them trouble and as a result they give up and return to China rather than set firms up here. China has a huge amount of money available for technology investment. They do work well with UK firms, e.g. Geely and Lotus are making a success of it.

@@Andrew-rc3vh exactly. Most brits don't even go to their own universities. Top British universities have more internationals than locals. It is the foreigners that are doing the research. Top top professors in science are not British. It is impossible for Britain to lead the world in any technological sector. They are too far behind.

Ahhh, the British superiority complex. The actual belief that they invented everything, just the nasty bigger countries stole it and sold it. No way they designed things themselves, built it themselves. It was all the Brits.

I think the British will create it - then, as the Japanese did with cars, television, phones, etc., the Japanese will use the basic technology to create a product 10 times better and half as expensive.......

There are far too many rules and paperworks to do for scientists in the UK than in US and China, they are extremely slow down the pace when competing with those two nations in advanced technologies, for funding , the economy is another story 😂

This is stupid, quantum computers were first advertised as being faster then classical computers, then they said it would only be faster at simple but intense tasks like calculating pi and solving encryption, now it is more ethereal tasks like "optimise logistical networks", AI is done on classical computers.

There are A LOT of Chinese people working in this sector, for British universities. However, the past few years there has been increased persecution of Chinese in the west, creating a hostile environment for them to live in. This increases the chances of migration of vital skills from the UK to China or elsewhere.

The evolution of quantum technology is showing here by the component in the head piece the young lady was fitted with. I’ve seen quantum computers with rather massive hulls and practically limited capabilities in the past, the United Kingdom investing billions of pounds and yet offers from the USA are competitive. This shows quantum technology is a lucrative and promising field emerging to either make life easier or worse depending on how it takes shape in the coming years. If the world of today became as capable as advanced civilization’s in science fiction, depicted in the many examples circulating throughout the annals and journals of global attempts to show a cherished future, any advancement in pioneering technology will pave the way to a better tomorrow.

    BUDDHA WORDS
"Monks, these four types of kamma have been directly realized, verified, & made known by me. Which four? There is kamma that is dark with dark result. There is kamma that is bright with bright result. There is kamma that is dark & bright with dark & bright result. There is kamma that is neither dark nor bright with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the ending of kamma.
"And what is kamma that is dark with dark result? There is the case where a certain person fabricates an injurious bodily fabrication, fabricates an injurious verbal fabrication, fabricates an injurious mental fabrication. Having fabricated an injurious bodily fabrication, having fabricated an injurious verbal fabrication, having fabricated an injurious mental fabrication, he rearises in an injurious world. On rearising in an injurious world, he is there touched by injurious contacts. Touched by injurious contacts, he experiences feelings that are exclusively painful, like those of the beings in hell. This is called kamma that is dark with dark result.
"And what is kamma that is bright with bright result? There is the case where a certain person fabricates a non-injurious bodily fabrication ... a non-injurious verbal fabrication ... a non-injurious mental fabrication ... He rearises in a non-injurious world ... There he is touched by non-injurious contacts ... He experiences feelings that are exclusively pleasant, like those of the Beautiful Black Devas. This is called kamma that is bright with bright result.
"And what is kamma that is dark & bright with dark & bright result? There is the case where a certain person fabricates a bodily fabrication that is injurious & non-injurious ... a verbal fabrication that is injurious & non-injurious ... a mental fabrication that is injurious & non-injurious ... He rearises in an injurious & non-injurious world ... There he is touched by injurious & non-injurious contacts ... He experiences injurious & non-injurious feelings, pleasure mingled with pain, like those of human beings, some devas, and some beings in the lower realms. This is called kamma that is dark & bright with dark & bright result.
"And what is kamma that is neither dark nor bright with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the ending of kamma? Right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. This is called kamma that is neither dark nor bright with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the ending of kamma.
"These, monks, are the four types of kamma directly realized, verified, & made known by me."
