- Next Stop...West Virginia to Americas Newest National Park
(EPISODE 242)
ℹ️ About this episode:
On this episode of LivinRvision, we are making our next stop to West Virginia to see Americas newest National Park, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Along the way, we find a little hidden gem country store that has a lot of variety to choose from.
As you know, we are in a rush to get as much content as we can while we make our way back to visit family and friends and most days that we get are very limited on how much time we can spend at each stop or how many stops we can make before we need to keep going. So we have to be choosey and do some research to figure out what we think would be the best spots to stop at that will make the best out of the little time we have. Our intentions are to have enough content to edit for a few weeks while we are visiting family and friends on the weekends, so that we don’t have to film on the weekends like we normally do. Then, once we leave Iowa again, we will be back to our “normal” schedule.
Our next stop tin the New River Gorge National Park takes us to the Grandview Main Overlook! This is a must stop! The views here are spectacular and if you have the time, there are nearby trails that you can take for more beautiful views. Just be sure to bring your favorite bugs spray. 🦟
As we continue to travel, we decide to stop in a historic little ghost town called, Thurman. This little town only has one way in and it is a LONG railroad bridge that is only a ONE WAY, so make sure you don’t see any other vehicles crossing when you decide to drive across. We also share some very interesting history about this little ghost town as well.
Next, we are heading for the New River Gorge Bridge which is known as one of the main attractions of this National Park and for good reason!
We hope you enjoy and have a few laughs along the way! 😁🤓

WELCOME....WEST VIRGINIAN HERE....OUR STATE IS BEAUTIFUL.
I love those old places. neat music with it. You Folks do a great job with your videos. Thanks
I love how you guys find unique historical places. Love the music you choose for your videos. I can’t wait till the next one.😊
Your content is so far and above anyone posting RV videos . Your videos are part of my Sunday morning breakfast. I look forward to your post , which are amazing.
Howdy Guys! Wow really great video. So green there. That bridge was crazy 😜 I am just like you Michelle I white knuckle on twisty narrow roads. Such a pretty area though! Thanks for a great video AGAIN 💛Be Safe.
Lotta coffee for Michelle . Great job of driving those roads Brian. I’ve had a few spoons broken too! 🤓😎🥸
😂
Thankful to be a West Virginian! Glad that yall enjoyed New River Gorge National Park!
Look forward every week for your videos...
Grew up in WV. Beautiful state! On the second Saturday in October the state shuts down 2 lanes crossing the new river bridg 25:44 e for “bridge day”. Folks that are adventurous (or foolish) skydive from the bridge into the canyon below. Quite a spectacle!
We read about that Bridge Day. Would be something to see for sure! Don’t think we would ever be one of the “adventurous” jumpers. 😂
youall need to take a white water raft trip and see the bridge from the river its great or just drive down the river road to the underside of the bridge the view is spectacular.
Thank you for the tour of parts of West Virginia. Thurman seemed very interesting.
We would love to get to West Virginia one of these days. My family settled there after the Revolutionary War.
Specifically in Lewisburg, WV where my many greats grandfather is a part of the walking tour.
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing your family roots. 🧡
Thanks for taking us along. After watching the video and seeing the narrow road, it'll be the only way we'd see that part of the country.....😊😊😊 Safe travels!!!
Not all WV roads are like that one.
I reallly enjoy your videos and your personalities. Thank you for filming for us all to enjoy!!
🧡😊🤓
Glad you guys got to visit our beautiful state.
We left Fl. about 8 weeks ago for a trip to Maine and back. Along the way we stopped at the New River Gorge also. We stayed at Summerville Lake Resort campground which wasn’t far from New River Gorge bridge state park. A cold front had come through so the bugs were not a problem when we were there. It sure was a pretty place. We’re enjoying your videos. Thanks for information on the Grech Ion.
Love WV. Hawks Nest St Park is our favorite.
WV is one of our most beautiful states. I feel you Michelle. My husband is from WV and when he took me back 48 years ago we road those narrow roads high in the mountains. For a person scared of heights it was frightening 😬🫣. I was definitely on edge. We go back a couple times a year and love the state, but those roads are still scary!! We took a good friend up there a couple months ago and gave him the experience of the narrow curvy roads. You did good!! Hope you and your mom had a great Mother’s Day! And Brian….Happy Father’s Day!
Love your video!
🧡
I live in Oak Hill WV. Thank you for this video of the area. We are very proud of our National Park. 😊
My husband was a union structural ironworker in his profession, working mostly on West Virginia river bridges and power plants construction projects.
It is for the feint of heart……💙
WV is a beautiful state when it comes to their well maintained state parks.
A big fan anyway, but an exceptional video today, Brian. Thank you.
Was just at New River NP last week. That whole area is gorgeous!
We were there about a month ago. We’re working on all the videos we did during our trip back home for Mother’s Day.
Brian we love you! you always make us laugh, but it is good to see Michelle smile and talk more.
We visited the area before it was a National Park. It’s a beautiful place. The bridge is amazing!
Well done. Thanks for my Saturday morning entertainment. Last show tonight. San Jose. Safe travels. DW
Safe travels!!
Glad you enjoyed the area. I’ve been to the New River Gorge many times since the 80s for whitewater rafting, Bridge Day, and just visiting. There is a trail from the visitor center to take 200 steps down to a side on view of the bridge. A bit of a climb back up. You can also do a catwalk tour under the bridge, strapped in for safety! There is also a 1 yay road down to the river and up the other side although it would be tight going for a large van. Thurmond may still be a put in for rafting, imagine a school bus on that road. The Amtrak Cardinal runs through the gorge 3 times a week. I think Thurmond is still a flag stop. I watched it go by once from the Hawks Nest overlook, just west of the national park boundary. PS: Bridge Day in October, opens the bridge for BASE jumping and you can walk across it to watch them jump or pay for a down under tour and watch them try to land alongside the river!
Thanks for sharing the info! We had read about the Bridge Day. Would be very cool to see but don’t think we would ever partake in the jumping. 😂 😮
Thanks for the tour of the ghost town! Now, we don't need to visit! Safe travels. ❤❤
I love your videography and how you both are awesome 🤩
🧡
West Virginia is Beautiful and that bridge had spectacular views!
We just returned to Indiana from Lynchburg, VA with our 5th wheel. Chaos Mtn in VA was a challenge.
You two are so cute and funny 😆 beautiful country. Thank you for great videos
Love your videos, some of the places you have traveled we were just recently at, love how you have added a little history of where you are at
Mountains are beautiful! Michelle's yep on that curvy road was pitiful! Didn't realize a new National Park was added. Thanks for letting us know!
As beautiful as that gorge drive is, I would be glad to get to a larger city. Something struck me as kind of eerie. Have a nice visit with family! ❤
New River Gorge is on our list! Thanks for taking us along.
Well, you are kinda of in my backyard. I was born ad raised in WV and love New River Gorge. Have visited the area hundreds of times. It is a beautiful, beautiful area of WV.
😀Made me think that I have ignored WV as boring. Looks like a nice visit on your way north. Take care guys. Talk soon.
🧡
I love seeing all the places you go..❤
“Say cheese”… hilarious 😂
My husband was from WV. Great to see the video! Beautiful area! First time we were there, we drove from Charleston to Nitro, 30 mi. This AZ gal thought 30 min. 3 hours and I got motion sickness.🙄
Tarmarak is spectacular. Did you know you can make a glass blown piece without an appointment? For our anniversary we choose to each make a tumbler. They came out so colorful and beautiful great keepsake, other options were a ornament ball or paperweights. They had woodworkers you could observe and so many museum quality items. My husband was very interested in some of these pieces. Plus there is a whole art gallery. We purchase many hand crafted items.
We also enjoyed touring a coal mine and village with a retired coal miner.
We didn’t linger much in Thurmon….we did more of the spectacular vistas.
Too bad you got all those bugs. We were there last sept. Water was clear and sparkles which was nice but not raging like you saw. That would have been interesting. We spent a whole week there. Beautiful area, your video has me wanting to go back.
Tamarack was very slow with hardly any vendors standing anywhere the day we were there.
Y’all should have done the bridge tour UNDER the gorge bridge! If you happen to keep heading up I-77 into Ohio, wave as you pass Marietta where live!
Wish we could have. We were here about about a month ago. We’ve been gathering as much content as we could so that I could have something to edit every week while we are back visiting family and friends on the weekends. We had to get back for Mother’s Day. Things will catch up here soon.
Great video! Beautiful country.
Heading that way(w Va , Va, Ky, Tn .) in two weeks, first have to get to Michigan from Florida.
Great Video. I love VA. My Mom was born and raised in Clifton Forge, VA. Very close to West VA boarder on route you were on. I saw a sign as you were driving to W. Virginia that said Covention, it's right in that neck of the woods. Beautiful part of the US. I have very fun memories of family trips to see my Grandparents and Aunts & Uncles. Loved seeing all your stops and great historical info. That Apple butter is the best!
Good video. Thanks.
I always like your music
Caverns are great. I went to em back in 2018. Love that whole area of the country
You are on what we West Virginians call a thirdly road which is almost a cow path. If you are going to travel in WV, expect to be on such roads. There are some such roads when you go around a curve, you must honk your horn to let someone coming in the opposite direction that you are coming around the curve. Glad you visited Thurmand. The bridge crosses New River, one of the oldest rivers in the world.
Ah Ha! You are at Beckley in Raleigh County, WV. Tamarack offers some of the most absolutely gorgeous items.
Hhhiiiiiii!!! 👋 I’m so glad you enjoyed the pie!!! I know my husband would be smiling about that 😁 it looks like the weather cleared up for you some, I’m glad it did 😁 you guys ended up in the sticks in West Virginia 😲 I sure hope you make it back to Virginia, definitely come back to see the caverns 😁 I certainly hope we can meet up again, I had such a great time, and I’ll make you another pie 😉. Safe travels 😁
🧡😊🤓
WV IS BEAUTIFUL....and not all of us are not in the STICKS....js.....idk why they went this route...but i guress they wanted too.
Was on vacation last week so I am late on commenting. I totally get having to skip sites or activities due to time. I just went to Calgary, Banff and Canmore Alberta in the Sprinter van all the way from MO. Such a long drive but worth it. Always love the videos and used some of your advice on our trip. Good ol Cracker Barrel. Saved me after a 10 hour drive from Montana to Sioux Falls SD.
Lot of rain. The New was muddy. I’m from further south in Va near the New River Trail.
Beautiful scenery! Wonderful job as always. Appreciate how you always give the history when available. Would you consider giving the dates when visiting a location? Continued safe travels!
We will be going back to giving dates like we usually do soon. There’s a reason why we haven’t been lately. (Has to do with the National Parks).
@@LivinRVision Oh, ok, thanks!
@@LivinRVision I'd not recommend telling WV your coming. Your RV will b stolen. Worst economy, OD capital of the world.
Somewhat surprised you didn't go through the Hinton WV area. It is an old railroad town which still has an active railroad, a railroad museum, a nice downtown with antique stores, a couple shops and restaurants, etc. You pass through Hinton on the way to Sandstone Falls which is also in New River Gorge National Park. There is a nice little boardwalk which takes you to the falls area. This year is Hinton's 150th birthday and there will be a railroad festival held in October.
Another great video 😊x
Shelley here, Michelle roads like these I close my eyes & I am driving! 😂 Kidding I won't drive them. Limited by fear! 👍❤️
Totally giggling in the first 7 minutes! I do that to my husband when he takes to long doing anything(act like I'm sleeping). Good thing Michelle can multi-task as your "assistant" ;) lol
"Yellow Cheddar", say that 3 times! lol Great video guys! #seeyanextweek !
That was our first National park with Stella&Wally. The "Charleston to Charleston" adventure. Thank you for taking us along. And we search for apple butter, for Sarah (mom)😊
i'm playing catch up with the videos due to i was in the hospital for 9 days 3 weeks at the orchards 21 days i was gone from home total of 4 weeks and 2 days i came home on June 14 ..stay safe blessed guys and ty for all the great videos
So glad you’re doing better 🧡
Wow! We thought those narrow WV would, maybe, be one way!! Nope! Beautiful Appalachia
You were in my neck of the woods! We live in Front Royal 😁. And curds are best when they’re “squeaky”. 🧀
There is a harvest hosts brewery in Middletown, VA which we stayed at. Beautiful location, good beer and food but no pie😢
Fun video!
As a transplanted WV girl, I loved seeing all the beautiful sights, made me homesick. Did you drive any "kiss-your-butt" turns? The last job that I had in WV before we moved I traveled the roads of our beautiful state quite a bit. Nothing like driving those country roads in the fall with all the beautiful leaves that are red, yellow and orange. Almost Heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River!
We didn’t get to explore any further as we drive through, we were in a bit of a hurry.
I sure enjoyed the background music. Any chance the band has recordings for sale? Beautiful scenery and it's so wonderful that you share the memories! Safe travels to Brian and Michelle.🚐🗽🗺️
We pay for a music service for the music selections.
Safe travels.
What a depressing place by the railroad tracks. My parents and late husband's grandparents hailed from West Virginia. I could almost smell the air as you drove through the forestry areas. Beautiful state though. Thanks for the journey. And many more safe travels.
Fun video guys! Michelle, I love your jacket. Can you give me any details on it, so I can buy one. Hopefully Amazon and you can send me the link. Safe travels guys.
It is from LLBean in a mall on the east coast somewhere but we can’t recall where. It was about 2 years ago. I call it my “Woolly” 😂
Basically, I'm a new subscriber. I've been following you for a couple of months now. I love your videos and content. If you don't mind me asking, what type of camera setup do you use when you're filming on the road and volging from your vehicle?
Welcome! Glad you’re enjoying them.
A GoPro on a stick…not from a tree. 😜
You should head up to Hocking Hills in southern Ohio. It’s kind of on your way not far off of 77 north. It’s a great place, I’m sure you’d love it!
We did stop there. Part of next weeks video. We gathered all of this content while we were on our way back to visit family during Mother’s Day.
Thanks!
Those backroads in W. Virginia look like something out of a movie, a horror movie.😅 I would not want to get caught there after dark. Still a very beautiful place. We have that on our bucket list to go to someday.
Glad y’all had some nerve pills for Michelle!
Loved the video.
Have to go back for Bridge day
That looks like a fun time…as long as it’s not us jumping off the bridge 😂
Hi guys-- next time you get in the area you'll have to go to Luray Caverns! We stayed at a really cool campground up there also. Question for you guys--- how was it getting a permit for New River Gorge for filming or didn't you get one? We are hoping to get there this year and film and was just wondering? Thanks.. Safe Travels!!
Yes, we got a permit. We always do. The process is the same for getting permits at National Parks, you’re just talking to each separately.
Thank you for sharing this with us. NO WAY would we go across that bridge let alone twice!! I don’t need another heart attack!! Beautiful video though!
You should go there on Bridge Day in October where you can walk across the bridge and watch base jumpers, jump off of it!
There is a day set aside one time a year that the bridge is closed to traffic and people come and bungie jump. Ah ha! Charleston is close to where I was born and raised. You are about 100 miles from Charleston.
That’s what we hear. Would be exciting to watch but not participate. 😂 We stop in Charleston, WV in the next video after this one.
@@LivinRVision Best wishes on your trip.
Sorry, we meant the video is already out. It was after the one you watched here.
@@LivinRVision I hope you had a great time in WV. Thank you!
U should of ate at Tamarack, it’s amazing cafeteria type food, all delicious like the Greenbrier
Kopps in Milwaukee best Custard anywhere anytime any place.... Darn good burgers as well. Milwaukee Insitution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ck out their Flv forecast. Going for fathers day, that good!!!
My sister and her family say that is their favorite ice cream place. 👍🏻
Sure would hate to break down on those roads. Pretty land though.
Beautiful video! I thought you couldn’t film in national parks anymore as a you tube channel without paying a fee. ???
We did pay a fee and got a permit. Did we say we didn’t?
Where was this old country store located? I would love to visit.
I believe it is just right down the street from the Sandstone Visitors Center that we showed. Just type the name shown in the video in your maps in West Virginia and it will show you exactly where it is located. 👍🏻😊🤓
Backroom Brewery off I-81
The roads you were on are not scary at all. We got some scary ones around here but they are off the main paths. Best time to visit this area is late October when the leaves are peaking. Come back for Bridge Day.
The entire road was not scary, it was the narrow parts of the road especially the areas with the houses and wall right at the side of the road with nowhere to pull over when there is oncoming traffic that hugs the middle, especially when you are driving a larger vehicle. As mentioned in this video.
Bridge day looks interesting but you wouldn’t catch us jumping off the bridge. 😂 The fall colors would be beautiful.
@@LivinRVision The scary roads are the old roads with the rock cut wall on one side and over 300’ almost vertical drop off on the other. Even gets to me sometimes.
Yikes. Yes, there are many different “levels” of scary roads throughout the country and some more so than others. Driving close to oncoming traffic doesn’t discredit a road from being scary to us though. 😂
Fayette Station road comes to mind.
I live in Oak Hill,West Virginia, 7 miles south of the New River Gorge Bridge. Thanks for coming to my native habitat. I could not live anywhere else
The New River looked very muddy. I have white water rafted the river several times.
If you ever want some West Virginia tips, hit us us!
So pretty
I believe a neck fan would help keep some of the bugs away from your face. This is a place my husband and I have talked about going.
Use some type of bug spray.
How long is your vehicle?
It’s 24ft
Such a beautiful place!
Is if you don’t live here😂
P. S. Brian let her talk coffee, makes us busy! 😳
😂
Brian you both always crack us right up! Bob Newhart & my Aunt Vedonna! You don't know her but Michelle is spot on & we adored her! ❤️
🧡😊🤓
I`m thinking yall should buy stock in Cracker Barrel .......lol I started from day 1, I`m almost to date. I`n not sure how long it has taken, I still working the job.
You folks have been in the Boonies !!!!!
New river gorge bridge! Yawsa, yawsa, yawsa!
All the small coal towns are like Thurman now. Shops all empty. Hour to hospital or Walmart in certain areas. OD Capital, aorst economy in the US 😢
I live in Beckley. Couple times a year I try to go and visit a wild and wonderful part of WV. My kids love the Lost World Caverns in Lewisburg. If your looking for a day hike and scenery Blackwater falls in Davis and Twin Falls has good paths and nice views especially during fall when the leaves change. Old style architecture: you can visit Harper Ferry for 19th century or go to Moundsville and visit Grave Creek and see artifacts and "buildings" from I think it was 200 BC. There's also Berkley Springs which have natural hot springs the run a constant 80 degrees year round. Supposedly a bath the George Washington used to visit often. They also have private old school bath houses and saunas there as well. Excellent luxurious spas there with renowned masseuses as well. Whole bunch of pretty country here with oddities and and interesting history spot scattered around.
Thanks for sharing! 😊🤓
OMG...Get that women some pie after that drive....I would have not liked that either......
no heavy vehicles but its a rail road bridge...thats and oxymoron in itself
😂
