Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty/2.0: Bad PC performance? It might not be your GPU

  • The Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update as well as the Phantom Liberty expansion pack have significantly changed CPU performance in the game. There is also now an AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) setting available under the gameplay options which can affect CPU performance. Ray tracing also puts an additional burden on the CPU. In this video we look at CPU limited performance on a variety of CPUs and also explore how the AMD SMT button affects performance as well as other game settings like crowd density and Ray Tracing, including RT Overdrive.

Hey Daniel, it's quite jarring when you're moving your camera frame to align your pointing finger. It's a cool idea, but it makes it harder for me to focus since so much more than your finger starts moving around. I think it wouldn't be an issue if your hand was filling up the whole camera shot or you used pointing hand cutouts to pin on the image, or even good old green marker highlights/circles. Just a few ideas to keep the criticism healthy. Thanks for your work making another solid video, they are always on point and I wish more tech media was paying attention to the increasingly cognizant topic of CPU binds and utilization.

@18:30 I am a game developer, and you're kinda most of the way there. Games and programs in general are sequential, we can only do things in the correct order.
So even though we split up a task into other threads, it's not necessarily one task being split up and is instead a set of tasks being split up.
30 people walking around can be split into 30 threads, but each thread would only be one person walking.
You can't make 1 person walking be split up into 30 threads.
The way we often say it is "having 30 chefs doesn't mean the cake bakes in the oven faster".
There's also the fact that if a thread is using data, it's not like anything else can use that data.
In order to use that data there has to be a lock put onto it to stop another thread changing it mid process etc.
This can cause all kinds of headaches.
the "putting it back together again" at the end is indeed an issue though.
Especially when other code is waiting for ALL of the threads to finish before it can actually do its task.
So it's still going to have to wait for the slowest member of the group to finish before it can proceed.
This is a whole lot easier when each frame doesn't have to be done within 16ms.
In direct response to the topic of the game not using more than 16 threads, you're pretty much right.
    It's just diminishing returns really.

Even with the base game I noticed some odd CPU utilization that wasn't present prior to 2.0 which was bottlenecking performance (dipping to the mid 50s) in some areas, and it looks like even G-Sync won't save it with the Phantom Liberty stuff.
It's good that this was brought to my attention though, because I recently looked at some benchmarks of the 9600K vs the 13600K and it really wasn't worth upgrading for a 22% increase in performance. But it was with games that were not using eight plus cores. Was going to do a full system build next fall, and then decided not to due to Nvidia stalling their next gen of GPUs, but I might reconsider it if enough CPU intensive games (that I actually want to play) release between now and then.

Now I have another kit 3600cl16 which i have overclocked to 3733cl16 and tightened the timings as much as possible, now I average 223fps. The difference is massive. I saw you test in starfield and you 5600x was dropping below 60fps in new atlantis, I tested in on my pc, same settings, same location and I constantly had 10-15fps more, when cpu bound. Game dev here. It's not harder to split things off to more cores or not. The amount of work and the splits are likely not changing at all, meaning the syncing does not change, and if a thread is waiting on a sync, it will not stay in a spin lock/active waiting, so it's utilization numbers will go down. The reason you probably can se a bit of slowdown when you split things up on more cores are much more likely to do with cache and kernel level interrupts, making one thread stall others. It is likely happening no matter what, but it is happening at more points during one "job" if more threads run at the same time.
As for cache, on AMD, different cores share the cache in different ways, depending on their physical layout. Performance can change from managing that. If two core that share cache access the same atomic variable, it will have less of an impact compared to if they didn't share cache. So it can be good to share cache at times. But, it can be bad in other. If more cores use the same cache for jobs that don't share memory, it means the cache will fill up and have more misses faster, making them run slower.
So, in short. It's very complicated to do absolutely optimal threading, and these things are likely why you might see bad scaling even when the CPU gets work.
(also, there are more factors, like virtual threads on the same physical core actually share busses, so if just one of them completely saturate for example the available SIMD instructions, it can turn in to stalls and waiting, and actually minimal parallel work... But that is a complicated thing to evaluate and explain)

@@itsTyrion please read that as "not harder to split tasks that are already able to run in parallel off to more cores when it is available" . I am sure this game has more tasks than cores, and if it is anything like the projects I've worked on, it is very easy to get more worker threads to match more cores. So this is referring to that, and the rest of the comment is about why it might not run better even if you can decide it on more cores. If the cores didn't actually receive work, and the spitting was hard. We would see their utilization being low as well.
Anyway, everything written here needs to be simplified. It's only a comment section on a video after all. Not a full-fledged programming discussion hub.

with the 5950X the SMT hurls performance because of the latency between CCDs. The setting distributes the CPU load over all the cores and this requires fast communication among them, but when a core in CCD 1 has to talk to a core at CCD 2, there is an extra delay caused by the infinity fabric's speed limitation. In 8-core CPUs such as the 5800X or 7800X, there is only 1 CCD and a unified cache, so the core-core communication is as fast as possible. This is why the 7950X3D has extra cache on 1 CCD only and AMD also uses the Xbox game software on windows to redirect the game's CPU load to this one, to maximize performance and minimize latency penalties.

    • @h1tzzYT
      @h1tzzYT Год назад +3

"with the 5950X the SMT hurts performance because of the latency between CCDs"
You mixed up few things and also CCD latency most of the time does not effect gaming perf in negative way.
First of all, SMT ON hurts 5950x in this game because of "context-switching", essentially what it means is that windows scheduler takes more time assigning jobs for each cpu thread longer than actually executing them, thus creating extra overhead and worse performance.
If game could utilize more cpu threads than 16, it will most likely improve performance with SMT ON, because now there are more "workers" than available cpu cores, so with SMT ON feature, additional cpu threads will most likely help.
Now the dual CCD latency does not effect cpus most of the time as windows schedules vast majority of games on its first CCD anyway, and in other cases when both ccd's are utilized it actually increases performance, due to additional cores and cache on secondary CCD. It is quite rare when 5950x performs slower than 5800x, in most cases its either the same or 5950x has like 10-20% better perf. in 1% lows and 0.1% lows, maybe a bit higher AVG on top.
The theory that unified cache of 3800x/5800x/7700x being objectively superior performer in games than its dual CCD counterpart (3950x/5950x/7950x) is mostly a myth, because it's mostly supported by outliers rather than overwhelming majority of cases.
7900x3d/7950x3d is different case since they are hybrid and asymmetrical cpus unlike 3950x/5950x/7950x, so assigning same game on both CCD's becomes quite troublesome and may lead to stuttering and other perf issues.

      @ojonathan Год назад +2

Yes, although the Core-to-Core latency between two CCDs is not that high (normally something around 79ns), there's an additional problem, for example, let's say the Game Thread 1 is scheduled on CCD1 and then moved to CCD2, CCD2 now needs to go through Infinity Fabric to fetch data from the CCD1 and copy to the CCD2 L3 cache. Now this Game Thread 1 is scheduled again on the on CCD1. As long as the data is not modified, this is fine, but games do a lot of write operations to memory, and this means that CCD1 and CCD2 has to keep this data consistent across both caches using the MOESI protocol, and this incurs in a performance penalty, although small, it does affect frame rate.
As for the L3 cache, it's not only to minimize latency, it's way more to avoid cache misses. If a thread that was previously on a CCD1 + 3D V-Cache, and goes to another CCD2 which also has a 3D V-cache (AMD has prototypes with 3D V-Cache on both CCDs), it will surely hit a lot of cache misses and have to fetch everything through Infinity Fabric, and even worse, deal with data coherency penalties across both L3 caches. You generally want the application to be Cache Resident. They stick to a single CCD and use this same cache for its entire lifetime.

My 1050 ti 4gb is still kicking ass in medium settings with performance fsr, gives 50-60 most of the time and doesn't drop below 30 in the most intense places

Hoping someone here can help me. Running afterburner shows that one like 4 of my cores are being used. Out of those, only one is consistently above 30-50% and the other three barely touch 5%. Is it something on my end? Bad install or something, perhaps?

Now they are just using this game to sell CPUs, because even 7800X3D appears to close to being a bottleneck, CPU usage is 75% of the total CPU and it is one of the fastest CPUs out there.

Iam getting 40fps average on mid on my ryzen 3500 and rx570 4gb so they optimise it pretty well as well they can so no complain for performance

Why are they equating a 7800x3d to a 12700k? The difference is SOOO huge. The 7800x3d is gonna run it better than a 7900x but put below it on rec requirements? Do they know what these components are?

lol, I play on ultra no RT at 1440p dlss quality on a 2080 super EVAG KO and a 3700x CPU clocked at 4.2 Ghz on each coreDriving
    At ultra no RT.
So guys.... It's not that heavy.
Now.... When you do ray tracing..... Oh shit. If you put ray raced lighting on..... It will destroy you frame rate and even just having ray tracing checked with reflections and shadows it will hit your frame rate big time. I can' get more than 45 fps inside and can't get more than 25ish when driving with rt on ultra. Even medium it's taxing. I have to go to 1080p and quality and even medium to achieve 60 fps inside and then stilll it's only around 45ish fps when driving and 1080p quality DLSS doesn't look to sharp on a big screen. So..... Yeah.
It's just heavy with ray tracing

All that CPU % is BS untill those clocks are locked and they don't throttle or boost. CPU can switch clocks in ns's and those % I'm prettty sure they are not linked with CPU clocks. As example, my Windows CPU task manager show my clock 3,3-3,5 GHz at idle but it's taking this calculations out of his ass, averaging it very badly. When I use better software it shows that 99,9% time when idle my CPU is like 400-600 MHz. Conclusioin. Telling CPU workload right know is very hard ;)

So basically you're telling me that my brand new 7600X can't max out an a-ok 3 year old game? I guess now I have to buy PCs from NASA for 1B$ to play latest games on low settings, apart from the fact that this 1B$ PC will become garbage-tier in a matter of 1 year. What a times to live in, ffs...

Depends on what you mean by maxed out. The 7600x has roughly the same performance of a 5800x3D. It will get stable and fluid 60+ fps at 1080p ultra and 1440p. At 4 k it might see dips below 60, especially with the different RT presets. But that is to be expected. Even the biggest cpus get sweaty with maxed RT/PT.

I dont get over 20% CPU usage on 12600k/rtx4080 1440p on overdrive and locked 60fps 3120p and only 7-12% CPU no issues with tearing or things. Should I be getting better frames if have 50% more cpu utilization??? Resize bar off
