this is a very ancient dance with religious, festive origins in ancient Greece . It was danced to honor the God of wine Dionisous, and God Apollo. It is danced from Napoli-Neapolis, Taras-Taranto, Agricento ,and throughout many areas of south Italy where ancient Greeks had settled. .... Great dancing guys, and keep this wonderful dance forever ... greetings to you from Sparta Greece

My dad was Sicilian and took us to live in Southern Italy. I loved the culture there. I was just remembering the doll I got there with long dark hair for some reason…it was nearly 60 years ago! He loved to dance with my mother and probably influenced me to want to dance as well because I took a class in about every style of dance there is. Never got really great at anything but it was fun!

Love this. You can see how culture and traditions travel from one place to another along with music. I can see elements of Morris dancing, Scottish reel dance, the Jewish Hora, Square dance, as well as Greek folk dance in this. Perhaps even Irish dancing too. Shows that as people migrated and intermingling of society took place, cultural exchanges took place too, in which styles of music and dance were shared, slightly altered, and merged. So much for our modern day belief that only with the Internet and technology could musical creativity and diversity exist.

Nothing about this is related to Scottish reel dance or morris, it’s its own rooted in Sicilian tarantella dance. Stop making every other culture about “English and Scottish” which they are known for obnoxiously taking credit in other ethnicities cultures and traditions, you guys wish…..

It is cause they are Albanians you fool, moved to Sicily after Ottoman empire got all the lands from Albanians under their control, all Italian mafia roots are in fact from those Albanian moved at that time under Ottoman pressure with hope Vatican will be their shield and hope for better life, on the other hand Vatican just moved them in South part of Italy where the condition for normal life are equal to 0, with the time they were forced to be criminals etc to make fortune and there when mafia families stories started

    • @carlotomei749

      Taxi Driver
Sorry for you, but your explanation about mafia from Albanians is completely false. Believe me: I am Italian and I do not believe at all that mafia was imported from other countries. And also your explanation about the Vatican is completely out of real history. At that time Italy was divided in many independent States and the Southern Kingdom of Naples was governed by Spain. I do not know where you studied your strange history. All the best.

Did you know? This dance was formed in Sicily as a way to flush spider venom out of the system by engaging in vigorous dancing until exhaustion, hence the name "Tarantella" (although it wasn't actually a tarantula biting people those times; the culprit was closer related to the black widow).

How interesting to see! We have a dance in Sweden and a variety in Denmark that is called Tarantella, but it is with different music and it is not that alike this, only some of the steps and figures. Still interesting to see the similarities!

Tarantella originated in Southern Italy. Tarantella means little tarantula in Italian. The history of the dance is very interesting, related to the moves of the Tarantula.
