rjb 112 thanks for the support! I find the paper towel keeps the microgreens much cleaner when I am cutting/harvesting, I don't get soil on my hands or on the plants. The roots find their way down through the paper towel into the soil and get the nutrition they need. Best of both worlds!

looking into growing them without soil and hydroponically using a nylon screen. But I am very new to this and my first harvest didn't go very well. But live and learn, I used grow lights but I think I uncovered them to early. You videos have been very educational for those just starting out.

I like your videos, I live in Colombia and here the microgreens aren't so popular. I have tried to grow some with mix results because of the whether, also it is hard to find seeds and-or they are quite expensive... Thanks

You do such a fine job making videos. I love sprouting. The cost is a fraction of what they cost to buy in stores...plus you have a much wider variety to choose from when you sprout them yourself ! I have heard you'd need to eat 2 lbs. of broccoli to equal the nutrition in just 1 oz. of broccoli sprouts !

Love your straight forward instructions, flexible approaches and resource listings. Previously, I've attempted and failed at growing microgreens. But now I am inspired to try again. I will not attempt jar sprouts ... at least in the near future. I know I am supposed to try sunflower first but I have broccoli seeds and will go with that even though they are advised as a second tier seed for beginners.
I've been watching your videos and I have found them very well done, and well explained. I wanted to ask you if you have ever used lettuce seeds as sprouts or microgreens? I bought some lettuce seeds to grow as hydroponic lettuces, but I find that there are more seeds in the pack than what I can reasonably use. So I thought of using the ones I am not going to be planting for a mature lettuce plant as microgreens. Do you think it would work?
Hi Nana2111, I grow lettuce a little past the microgreens stage...I call them baby greens, or baby lettuce. At the microgreen stage they are too wimpy for my taste, I like them to have a bit more substance to them. You can try to start them the same way you do microgreens, but a little less seeding....and then let them grow a bit longer. See if you like them that way. What tips do you have for getting the hulls off of sunflower microgreens and buckwheat microgreens? They grown very nicely but those hulls can be a pain........thanks
Thanks for your supportive comment, I appreciate it! I stack the sunflower trays and put some weight on them the first couple of days. I also brush the tops of them as they are growing to help loosen the hulls. I don't know about buckwheat, I have never grown that, how does it taste?

rjb112 I just brush them with my hand maybe twice a day, whenever I'm checking on them. I'll give the buckwheat a try, thanks! The worst hulls I have found are beets, they are very stubborn!
Can you use the raw already hulled sunflower seeds? I've heard you have to use soill with sunflower seeds. Got my sunflowers in late this year due to the crazy weather. Don't know if I will get flowers before the first frist in zone 6.

Hi Cynthia, look for 6500K (Kelvin) first, then try to find the most economical option, LED or fluorescent. Here is a link to Amazon for the grow lights I use:amzn.to/2NqbBXi the plants do well under them. Look around Amazon for other options, if you scroll down while you are on amazon you will see "customers also shopped for" and you will get some other options that way. Or go to Home Depot and look for a "shop light" but make sure it is 6500K. Hope that helps!
After you grow the seeds in the soil and harvest them, do you throw out the used soil? Do you use fresh soil on the next batch? Thank you for the informative video.
They go in the compost pile to be used in the garden outside. Next batch gets fresh soil. But that's just how I do it, I've seen others reuse the soil.

@@jeremyshiner7341 Sorry, I still might not be understanding your question. The microgreens don't regrow the same way lettuce does, after I harvest them I always have a fresh batch started, and the old harvested batch goes into the compost pile. Hope that helps.

Hi Lai Ling, I use mylar reflective material all around the grow area to reflect the light, you can find it on Amazon for about $10, it is very durable. Search for mylar reflective material or here is a link: amzn.to/2VS1YqQ you can also use a reflective emergency blanket they sell at camping stores.
Thanks to another of your videos I was inspired to start off some sprouts last night, something I haven't done in ages. Re the microgreens, can a porous cloth (e.g. cheesecloth) be used rather than paper towels? I'd really like to try this.
I have started to grow sprouts in a double tray. The instructions that came with the kit said to put water in the bottom tray. The top tray has the paper towels (I'm using cheesecloth). What is the purpose of the bottom tray with water since the top tray is not touching the water?
Allen usually putting water in the bottom tray is a method of "bottom watering" as the roots go down through the holes in the top tray, they feed from the water in the bottom tray. Unless they had something else in mind...
Tikki, I have some yellow mustard seed that I use to make sauerkraut, if I plant this will it grow into mustard micro greens, Is this the same seed as mustard greens??
I don't know if its the same seed, try it out and see what you get. I have a video on mustard microgreens, take a look at the seeds there and see if it looks like yours. Good luck growing!
Mine got mold in it. :( I did radishes and some bok choy and put tinfoil over them and checked it the next day and they were starting to sprout. That was day before yesterday. Just checked them and the radish had a lot of it and the bok choy is getting tall so I couldn't really see down in there on it. I sprayed a little more water on it and left the cover off.
Hi SouthernLady, you might want to bottom water instead of spraying, that will keep the leaves dry while providing the roots with the water they need. If you are in a humid environment try using a fan to get the air to circulate. How many hats do you have?????????
I always sprout in jars, this time I tried doing it on paper towels, like you have above. But it didn't work!!! I am totally bummed.. They were garlic chives and peas. I don't know what I did wrong?
Hi Lisa, if you are growing the plants as microgreens, then you harvest them and eat them! That is the idea behind microgreens. But if you want a mature plant, then you could grow them straight in a pot, you wouldn't use as many seeds of course...... Enjoy!
I am not a researcher, just a thoughtful grower and eater. My thoughts are that when eating a sprout, one eats the whole plant, and it is a living being when you ingest it. Microgreens could be said to be recently deceased, and the roots are not commonly consumed. I give sprouts the higher nutritive status. What do you think? However, microgreens are generous in their variety. I love them too. Why choose?
Do you ever sterilize or sanitize seeds with bleach or hydrogen peroxide? I have just started sprouting and a friend has just informed me of the dangers of pathogens on sprouts

What I actually meant to write was MICROGREENS!! Not sprouts. I tried to grow microgreens on paper towels.I have used mason jars and it has worked but not on the towel...

Tikki, I have some yellow mustard seed that I use to make sauerkraut, if I plant this will it grow into mustard micro greens, Is this the same seed as mustard greens??
I don't know if its the same seed, try it out and see what you get. I have a video on mustard microgreens, take a look at the seeds there and see if it looks like yours. Good luck growing!
Does the two tiered sprouted you have linked from Amazon work well for growing micro greens, or is it best just to use for sprouting?
I use a spaghetti strainer and line it with paper towels to grow sprouts

The soil medium became mouldy after about 7 days, what caused this and how can this be prevented for next time?
Mine got mold in it. :( I did radishes and some bok choy and put tinfoil over them and checked it the next day and they were starting to sprout. That was day before yesterday. Just checked them and the radish had a lot of it and the bok choy is getting tall so I couldn't really see down in there on it. I sprayed a little more water on it and left the cover off.
Hi SouthernLady, you might want to bottom water instead of spraying, that will keep the leaves dry while providing the roots with the water they need. If you are in a humid environment try using a fan to get the air to circulate. How many hats do you have?????????
I always sprout in jars, this time I tried doing it on paper towels, like you have above. But it didn't work!!! I am totally bummed.. They were garlic chives and peas. I don't know what I did wrong?
Peas are ok as shoots, have never heard of anyone sprouting garlic or chives…

Hi Lisa, if you are growing the plants as microgreens, then you harvest them and eat them! That is the idea behind microgreens. But if you want a mature plant, then you could grow them straight in a pot, you wouldn't use as many seeds of course...... Enjoy!

I am not a researcher, just a thoughtful grower and eater. My thoughts are that when eating a sprout, one eats the whole plant, and it is a living being when you ingest it. Microgreens could be said to be recently deceased, and the roots are not commonly consumed. I give sprouts the higher nutritive status. What do you think? However, microgreens are generous in their variety. I love them too. Why choose?

What I actually meant to write was MICROGREENS!! Not sprouts. I tried to grow microgreens on paper towels.I have used mason jars and it has worked but not on the towel...
