    Steve Martin is a true Renaissance Man. He is an accomplished author, a playwright, a musical composer, and oh yes, a comedian.

    The difference in a violin and a fiddle
    A violin has strings a fiddle has strangs

    Just saw Steve Martin and Martin Short in Hartford, CT. Brilliant show. They played this song and Martin Short came out dressed as the "Pretty Little One".

    I think Steve is a very underated vocalist. Probably because he is such an amazing banjo player, comedian and actor. How can anyone excell in so many fields? Don’t ask me, he is truly unique.

      Cathrine! Steve Martin has played the banjo since he was a lad. He was hired by Glenn Campbell as a writer and banjo player and performed in a 6 picker version of Cripple Creek alongside Campbell (and other well known pickers) on his show the Goodtime Comedy Hour in 1969 well before his stand-up comedy routine (where he utilized his banjo) made him famous. Steve has written a hit song "King Tut" as well as garnered 5 Grammys both for Comedy (2) and for Bluegrass/Country Instrumental/American Roots performances (3)
      Not only that but Steve Martin has been nominated for Grammys 10 times! He is one of the top banjo players in the country... it doesn't hurt that he Steve Martin famous comedian and actor, BUT Steve Martin has earned enough accolades as a picker that he will surely be inducted into a music hall of fame (of one kind or another) in the future!

      Yep, these 40+ years he has walked onto the stage for his comedy stand-up, and played it several times during his show it wasn't just a prop and a recording. He's the real deal, and many fellow musicians consider him a master of the instrument.

    I can not play the banjo and sing at the same time. The rhythm just throws me off. Gotta play my mandolin when lead singing. When the other band member sings I’m all over the banjo.

    Love the group, Edie, Steve...but these lyrics and their meanings are SKETCH.. Disillusioned and reassessing.

    • @queenofyeay
      @queenofyeay 7 лет назад +9

      I seriously don't know what you mean by SKETCH. That there are plenty of men throughout the US exactly like the guy portrayed in this song, I have not one hint of a doubt. I have known of a few lower level creeps similar to him over the years. That type have been around going back through history. What usually happens is the woman becomes a shell of a person, a human door mat; That this song stamps a different narrative on that all too sad story is a triumph. Life is neither as pretty as we would like, nor is justice done as often as it should when the nastiness in human beings crops up. That Steve, Edie and the Steep Valley Rangers have performed so flawlessly, harmonized so gloriously and made many laugh a bit (including myself) at what is essentially a tragedy that is played out in the US all too frequently, is a nothing short of a miracle. One of the finest (if not indeed the finest) bluegrass songs I have ever heard! Maybe Amy, you should listen to the song a few more times and if it doesn't reflect your life or that of anyone you know, rejoice in that fact, but realize that many women are in situations similar to this, WITHOUT the redemptive table turning in this song. The "Pretty Little One" is an anthem to those women. Bravo Steve Martin, Edie Brickell and The Steep Valley Rangers.
