Video interview with singer, songwriter and guitarist Adrianne Lenker from the American indie rock band Big Thief. This interview heals. It's beautiful to being able to listen to someone calmly. And to see someone who is not rushed and who's speaking from their soul.
I love that she gives such deep consideration to each question, rather than spout out some cliche answer for the sake of getting through the interview.
She's probably trapped in obsessing over detail
@@k.o.o.p.a. or stoned
"The river never disappears." Thats so true and beautiful. Art is a decision to listen to whats inside of you. Nothing more or less than that.
dude 😭😭
I wanna cry
I disagree.
her quiet intensity is so intoxicating.
eye roll to that one
@@Shivayoudestroyme Agreed.
Also you have a kickass name.
First name of a Britpop frontman, First last name of a relatively successful English footy player and second last name taken straight from apocalypse now.
Also the hyphen is special cool points.
I absolutely adore her music but she would make me want to jump out of the window
@@Shivayoudestroyme haha..too much?
Ignore the negative comments. We need more people like her in this noisy world. Calm, collected, and empathetic.
Its beautiful how Adrianne takes moments to literally let things sink in. To close your eyes and take a moment for yourself to let something resonate, or to collect your thoughts and feelings before speaking. Need to do some more of that
I always notice that intellectual people do that. I love it, too, and would like to do it myself.
@@bonniehirtz786 Meditation can help you with that aspect.
It seems that contemplation becomes less in the culture we live in. People react so much which creates anxiety. I always felt this growing up and it has caused much strife in my life. Her calm mindfulness, as she says “staying awake,” is something to aspire to.
I like how you worded that. With anxiety being the itch to react ...Then depression being the lack of reaction or less of an itch to react
Both of which can be done to a harmful extent
Oh I thought it was brain damage from substance abuse.
Seriously, Adrianne's hair grows like crazy, one day she's shaved the next she's wearing a ponytail.
i thought that too like wtf
Wig 😂
it is beautifully haunting how some of the statements she made gave me the same deep-rooted chills i get when listening to live versions of her(and the band's) music... her soul and voice are like a vessel, connecting things from deep within. this whole interview made so much sense, created so much peace within me.
the point she was making about how, if I understood correctly, art is making the intangible tangible, is so perfect.
I think Adrianne Lenker is one of the best songwriters of our time.
This is the first time I’ve seen an interview with her.. and I resonate with everything so hard. As a songwriter on the edge of deciding if I want to make my craft/my creative medium my career, I fear the connection I have to my soul will be compromised. The fear holds me back.. but i still want to share.
Thank you Adrianne for articulating and sharing your thoughts.
I wonder which path you followed...?
@@thomaswhittaker4747
An extremely unexpected one.
About six months after I wrote the comment above, I was a firm atheist, but willing to entertain the question of God because I had someone close to me tell me that they had met Jesus in person. I decided to say “Ok Jesus, if you’re real, I would like to meet you.” And much to my shock, Jesus Christ, God made fresh, actually revealed himself to me, and I have been following him ever since.
Now I am the worship leader at my church and I sing to God because he gave me life, peace, and clarity when I once felt dead and fearful and confused.
Best path I could have ever taken.
Not even kidding!
God is so amazing! He had a much better plan for me than I could ever planned for myself.

@@tess7510 Nice to hear you have found the right path for you and also pursuing your music still!
@@tess7510 I love this comment! I was just being nosey looking at the replies and as a Christian this made me heart feel so happy! I’m glad you can use music - something you love - to worship❤️ Thank you for sharing this and Id love to hear your music if you ever pursued it :)
She is like an indie Socrates of our era.
She is such an interesting person; from her thoughts, her creativity, even her appearance. She's very beautiful, but not in the classical sense. I find her so intriguing! I absolutely love the song "Paul" and "Masterpiece".
Bonnie Hirtz “Mary” is also truly beautiful. I remember when I first heard that song I laid in my bed and listened to it in the dark three or four times in a row and just cried in stillness. I was in a 9 year relationship and they had been with someone else. The pain of losing can be so visceral, but listening to that song tapped into something I used to be and feel that was forgotten. Somehow you remember parts of yourself, like a taste or shoes you had in third grade. “Mary” recalls the innocence that still resides somewhere in your memory, in your heart. Sometimes a song burns and you’re immersed in the murky poetry of its world.
“Beautiful, but not in the classical sense” that’s what we call a backhanded compliment. Just say she is beautiful, you don’t need the caveat.
Why? She has a uniqueness to her beauty that’s worth commenting on. There’s nothing backhanded about saying her beauty lies in a different realm than like a Grace Kelly or something.
I agree.. her existence and her expression is beautiful
Androgynous looking people are so aesthetically captivating.
I don't know why....but for whatever reason, I've always found androgyny, in men and women, to be so incredibly attractive.
The first Big Thief song I ever heard was Shark Smile.. It was like 3am, was leaving work and heading back home listening to Sirius XMU. I was immediately all in, best new band I had heard for at least 2-3 years. Lyrics had me full out sobbing. Did a deep dive into their catalog/live performances on youtube and fell head over heels in love with them. Adrianne Lenker is honest to god one of the most brilliant and talented songwriters alive today, she's truly one of very few. So glad they're being recognized for how good they are.
Their music can hug your soul
I feel so similar! I was driving home from work listening to WEXT and Simulation Swarm was playing. I absolutely was so impressed by the guitar rif in it. My favorite song (so far) is Masterpiece..Big Thief is absolutely AMAZING 😊
the way she speaks it reminds me of one of those archive interviews from the 70s etc
This is the most genuine, thoughtful and interesting music-related interview I have ever seen.
I just discovered Big Thief and want to devour their art. Adrianne is so awesome, I love her vocals.
“Cause I'd rather be lonely
And cold and awake
Than asleep in a warm and a comfortable place” from her song disappear really resonated with what she said at 13:30 ish
I love her so so much. We have tons of amazing female musicians and always have, even when it wasn’t the norm. But we need more who are considered among the all time greats(that is more a problem w the fans/critics than them themselves). But I feel she is a legitimate Leonard Cohen, bob dylan, etc level of talent. She moves me like no other. I borderline worship this gal
There's a childhood halo in everything she speaks. Childhood can be confusing for some folks. It reminds me of Maria Elena Walsh's words "Everyone's homeland is childhood". She is great.
:-) very great way to put it
So lovely. Introspective, articulate, eloquent. Like a delicate Snowdrop able to endure harsh conditions with grace. A beautiful soul. No surprise the music reflects that. It must be a special feeling to share the songs and stage, and to input for development. You can see that joy and togetherness in historic band photographs. A wonderful interview.

This interviewer is really good, both his interviews with Aldous Harding and with Adrienne have been very calm and patient. obviously they are both amazing but its nice to see an interviewer who gives that space
Very thoughtful, expansive, sensitive interview; she gets right down to the deep considerations of who she is and how it’s expressed through music. As a songwriter, I think of her first as an exemplary lyricist, reflective, articulate, probing, yet vulnerable. Looking forward to more from her.
This girl is beautiful inside and out
this makes me so happy on so many levels. she has the best energy... so soothing. i am in love with that energy.
Thank you for being an amazing interviewer and asking these soul-scratching questions. Also, Adrienne is amazing and this is a beautiful glimpse into her mind.
What a remarkable woman. A beautiful insight into a true artist.
This feels like therapy.
Oh wow she seems very spiritually minded. She’s a gift, I’m so glad I have discovered her.
I love how this turns into an existential Soliloquy when she gets asked about what drives her. She even spoke her ideas along the lines of Hamlet's "too be or not to be"
This is a fantastic interview, both questions and answers. Super thought-provoking
Thanks Chris!
incredibly interesting and heartfelt interview. she is so calming to listen to, and i like the way she thinks so philosophically, and out of body. she also uses a lot of visual imagery in how she speaks and thinks, whereby she describes creativity as a river that she dips in and out of. also how creativity is like a landscape where you are initially fluid amongst it, but as you move through it, you harden and put up barriers to try to stop criticism or whatever it is that makes a person harden and become more enclosed. Overall, that was a really interesting interview to hear! Thank you to both of you and the band!
She put how I feel about life so eloquently. I don't know how to build walls, and I don't want to. You can't feel as much if you put walls around yourself. It can be very scary to move through life completely exposed to the elements, but at times it is the most rewarding thing you could ever do
Her expression of herself through her music is exquisite. Love her solo and with Big Thief. Tender and Powerful.
I am so in love with Adrianne's mind.
to get closer to 'a clearer translation of the things that we have within us to express' - well put
What a great interview! She has so much wisdom.....
I want a video of Adrianne Lenker talking that never stops
Yes please, it's healing
This is a fantastic interview I love the questions and the answers are even better
Thanks Greg.i!
what she said about what drives her is very interesting
What an interesting and nice person! Saw Adrianne’s Tiny Desk concert recently and it was awesome!
I love her so dearly, her music has guided me through so much in life. My mind has a habit of reminding me of past experiences and refusing to stop thinking about them, but so many of her songs can be used as analogies to those memories. I can listen to a song that represents something hard over and over again until it's no longer a painful memory. It's just a beautiful song with a deep meaning to it.
She’s become one of my favorite songwriters.
I can hear her talk all day
Only God knows how much I love this woman...
I would love it if you were THE Mr Yorke from my joint favourite band along with Big Thief?
I see something of Elliott Smith in her eyes. And it's beautiful.
Well she does kinda look like Elliott Smith.
I love Elliott, I've recognized a lot of similarities in them.
vvulpesvvulpes yes in terms of voice when speaking and look but elliott hated that over-sentimentalised approach to music and all this self-perpetuated mystique that riddles anything with a folk label these days and came from a more punk place more akin to shane mcgowan (his words) in terms of lineage
Wow, I was thinking the exact same.
her mind is utterly psychedelic
This interview is so great. Most others just cover technics and industry, this one covers the real stuff.
She's so awesome!
Just went to see Big Thief in concert in Paris. I love their song and their stage performance was amazing too. Congratulations Adrianne !
One message to the artist. As per ticket requierement, we arrived at 6h30 pm and it s started at 10h30 pm. You need very strong health condition to wait standing in a poorly aerated crowded space and waiting 3h. Please help you fan Adrianne and to impose the concert logistic team to reduce this too long waiting period. Thanks a lot.
Great and candid convo.
My god she is stunningly beautiful inside and out❤
connected to your songs. Thanks
Physics says that quantum data can be super posed among many simultaneous states, and that once measured, it becomes a single state, thus by measuring a thing, you change that thing. I think what she was getting at is that an artist has their original creative force, and the things that drive them, but those things become changed by success. And so by succeeding, much like measuring, you change, and the way you express yourself changes, and the way you see yourself changes. It can be difficult to hold onto your creative soul when you're constantly evolving and being constantly measured.
Interesting thought!
word
That's so true, really good comment.
Maybe artistic identity is an illusion to begin with, and we’re always changing anyways :)
i Lovw adrianne
cried at her words
what a beauty 💜🌹🦋
oh Adrianne.......
Thank you Pitchfork for introducing me to this band. Today is a historical moment in my life. Now it is about before and after i discovered Big Thief
cant stop looking at the tentacle reaching out in the window...
love her
Adriana i love your music
She seems uncomfortable, but I think it's a matter of her not relating to the "normal" world. To her, nothing is normal, and this lack of normality must be discomforting at times, or maybe even most of the time when she communicates with people. It's almost as if she's an alien attempting to make sense of a new world. She's a profound metaphysical philosopher and poet who searches for meaning in things most of us don't even notice or care about, especially through metaphors based in nature. The last two Big Thief albums are super-saturated with nature metaphors that give form to things that defy objective explanations. Metaphors are her mother-tongue, and she speaks it with stunning fluency. Fucking brilliant.
I also didn't know a missing tooth could be so beautiful. I'd pull one of my own, but that would just make me look like someone punched me.
A I This is one of the best descriptions I’ve read about her and their music. Well said.
Or she's just traumatized from growing up in a cult, and it's difficult to communicate lol.
She gives off mad INFP vibes ❤️

So so so helpful.
I have my ear to the speaker making sure I can hear every word she says.

99% of what we do is just to be doing something.
She's the best song writer of the past 5 years.
It's hard to be that sensitive and not really have any roots.
what I was thinking!
I'm so glad she has music. There are a lot of people out there suffering because they are channeling their energy in other, more harmful ways, or simply can't access art for healing and expression.
I'm the 100th comment! Lol. Also, I love this band so much!
Shes so real
The Music is awesome, Thanks
She's so intelligent.
Old, old soul. xoxo

I really liked her analogy of one’s source of creativity being a heart that can grow hardened and buried by criticism. That’s something I’d definitely struggle with if my music got more attention.
Also how she said that she makes her lyrics more generalized if they’re too specific about her own experiences was really useful. I have been thinking about writing lyrics but they don’t sound good and this is part of the reason why. It’s too specific and not leaving a lot of room for connections and varying interpretations. I’m trying to capture experiences in the lyrics but should lean more into the more universal feelings and themes.
This woman is so full of truth❤
just self aware
oh how she words my thoughts sometimes
this is an adrianne lenker interview and also an SNL parody
tender beating heart
wow she is so cool
First minute and you can tell she suffered from hard dissociation when she was a kid :( same
I felt like i was living in a dream to they put me on medication for it
💓💓💓
♥
She looks beautiful in this - geez.
She's a powerfully weird kid, but it's still so exciting to have a new Jason Molina, Doug Martsch, et al. style band on the scene. Will check these cats out soon.
Ela é muito fofinha
Adrianne I love you
weird interview adrianne so cool tho
hell awaits you
She’s intimidating me
I started to listen to this, but after a minute am left thinking talking about music is like cooking about dance.
Many chefs get inspiration for dishes by trying to express how coming into contact with a particular song or painting or other artform made them feel, so that's not a ridiculous concept
@@jamesw.9256 That's interesting! When I was in art school, another painter and I went to a lecture and interview with Stephen Sondheim on his writing process, and pairing words with melodies. I felt so inspired to try it myself. I asked my friend later, if he also wanted to try writing. He said no, but he had a lot more ideas for paintings now, after listening to Sondheim. I think all of the arts are interconnected. Adrianne is very interesting to listen to.
That is incredible you witnessed a conversation with Sondheim! I would have loved that. Also, you share a nice anecdote on how you both were spurred toward creativity in different forms
I sure does like this girl....
