@@ultravioletpisces3666 The writers on the Y&R didn't see how a man could head up a cosmetics company which is why he was let go. I could understand his leaving the show IF that was his choice. I didn't understand why they killed off the patriarch, John Abbott was loved by many. RIP Jerry Douglas!
John Abbott was the perfect soap opera dad. He was so genuinely caring with his Abbott children. He was always there for them. Jerry Douglas was excellent in this role. God bless him.
wow so many years of watching this iconic masterpiece. with my mother as a kid, with my aunt as a teen, and with my wife. haven't seen it in a very long time, so I got a lil teary myself looking back on the Abbots. wow thanks for the memories
The alheizmers story line needs an award in itself. So many times I wanted to or did cry because the direction and acting was so on point. You cry not because of the subject matter at hand but the actors and directors move you and take you there. It may hurt, but it's so real and beautiful to watch unfold. I'm so happy to be a viewer to watch this wonderful yet tragic, art in motion. Bravo Abbot Family!
Awwww....I LOVE THIS!!! I've been watching the show since I was a kid. I remember the show transitioning from the Brooks/Foster clan as the core families to the Abbott/Williams/Newman core families during the early 80's. In fact, I remember the episode back in 1982 when the characters of Ashley and Traci were introduced to the audience. John/Jack characters had already been established in Genoa City. Ashley and Traci were introduced on the same day/episode. John visited Ashley in college, then went to visit Traci at boarding school to plan their return to Genoa City. Amazing Golden Era of Y&R. I LOVED the Abbott family breakfast scenes!!! John at the head of table,. Jack to John's right. Ashley/Traci sitting across from Jack. Mamie greeting the family with a smile, fresh baked cinnamon rolls, coffee and words of encouragement for the family!!! Where is Mamie?? ? Mamie should have been included in this interview!!!
My favorite soap! I’ve been addicted since it’s first premiere. Nothing like the original characters! Ashley,Traci, Jack, Dina and John. Peter is still fine as wine.
Have been watching the show since 1970 and still love it! Touching on Alzheimers means a lot as we are in the middle of this due to my Mom having it. It literally rips your heart apart..... So happy that a show has the guts to bring it to the forefront as unless you are living it you truly don't understand...... Thanks Y & R!!! The actors and actresses on this show are awesome!!!
I was born March 3, 1973. I started my journey with Y&R 5 years later and elementary school too. I love this show🤩💖45😆👍🏽💫💯 Way 2 Go Forever Young & Restless 🏆
Yeah but that they tried to Ruin it last year with John not being Jacks father and all of this was Ashleys messing was just BS! Im still glad that Jack is Johns son after all
I can’t believe it’s been that long and I’m still watching so many changes I don’t like , so nice too see the real family altogether they have my heart ♥️
In 1988, I was recovering from surgery and lucked into Y & R in the hospital. It was the part of the story where Ashley's husband was shot, murdered in his office by one of his psychiatric patients. I'm still watching! Over the past 30 years, it only gets better and better. Thank you all.
you're absolutely right, the reason the Young and the Restless is so awesome it's because they do have a strong family base and they don't forget about important people who leave they honor them. Our society could use a little bit more of that.
I love everything about the young and the restless especially Dina it is on point we are going thru this. Thank you so much for the story line for people to try to understand
Hey I watched this show since it began but not every show. I can remember watching a soap that was one before Y&R was on it was Love of Live . I loved that I could watch it on a sick day and in the summer . Oh and I can remember the first Jackie Boy LOL Thank you Jerry ( Daddy Abbott ) Douglas 👏👏👏👏
Thanks for posting this. Of all soap opera families, my favorite has always been the Abbotts. The family has been the "heart and soul" of Y&R for 35 years. To be candid, Y&R has really suffered in the past decade from a revolving door of producers and writers who frequently didn't seem to have a clue of write for the show. I firmly believe the Abbotts (particularly Peter Bergman as Jack and Eileen Davidson as Ashley) are a key reason that the ratings for Y&R have not eroded as the quality of what we've seen in the past decade has noticeably declined. Whether they are arguing or are fondly remembering their father, ANY scene between Jack and Ashley is always stellar. I could watch an entire episode of the Abbott clan simply reading a phone book!! I miss John Abbott and wish the writers would bring "ghost" John back to talk to his kids (heck, let him talk to his widow Gloria as well!).
Having watched Y&R in England from 1988-95 before it was removed completely from our screens, I do wish there was a channel that would show old complete episodes. The years that I watched were nothing short of great TV, acting and story lines every day. Loved The Abbott family, especially John and Jack's relationship with Victor Newman.
I miss the Abbott breakfasts. They were a highlight of the show. I also miss Terry Lester (original Jack) and Brenda Dickson (original Jill). Both were seasoned actors who brought so much to the show.
So do I. I grew up watching them with my grandmother and my mom. Being 43 years old now brings back so many memories of the show and remembering the conversations that my grandmother and mom was having during the show. It has definitely been a lot of changes.
I wish the ghost of "John Abbott" would make more appearances, especially now, to get Jack and Ashley back together again in the business!!! Loved that character!!!

I love the Abbott family. I hated that John called Ashley “My Beauty”. I will never forget the scene when Tracey was telling Jack how she felt about it. It broke my heart.
I remember my mom watching Y&R in the late nineteen seventies, and back then it was about a family named Prentis and a man named Stuart Brooks that Jill had the hots for and lets not forget Mrs Chanseler and David Hasselhoff as Snapper, then Victor was added to the cast around 1979,and eventually the Prentis's were out and the Abbot's were added on and well anyone who's kept up with it all these years knows the rest.
marc dewey you have it spot on accurate! Not too many describe it to a T like you did. To add, among the many or I'll keep talking, Nikki - Melody Thomas - on at the same time from 1978 along with Paul - Doug Davidson, and a small stint where former President Ford's son played along side with Melody Thomas. Boy, there's more .... we could go on and on with the memories!
@@beehiveear8883 Steven Ford played Andy. He was a great addition to the show. And so was Robert Parucha (Matt Miller-Victor's brother). Saw him in person. What a gorgeous man. Steven also was in the movie When Harry Met Sally.
@@maddyhayes617 nice! Yes, lots of memorable actors. Eileen Davidson made an appearance at a mall near me in 1985. And Victor as well! Very personable! Eileen is gorgeous as ever, and still is. Victor sure has a commanding presence even off screen. And very handsome.
@@Miacorr I think Ashley looks much better in recent episodes. I cannot imagine meeting Eric! I have met several soap opera stars, and other actresses and actors as well.
Doug Davidson came to Oneonta NY. Nice guy. Robert Parucha (very handsome) came to a mall near Binghamton, NY, Jamie Lyn Bauer (beautiful and down to earth) was at a mall near Albany, NY. I almost met Melody at a Lucille Ball Birthday Celebration and Festival in Jamestown, NY. Unfortunately, my mom had fallen and we had to cancel our vacation. We had been to a prior festival and had a fantastic time and wonderful memories. Melody is a Lucille Ball fan.
I'm one of those people that fell into watching Y&R thanks to my grandmother. It saddens me to admit that I gave up on it years ago. I did so out of pure frustration with how characters and certain core dynamics were changed. During the 80's and into the 90's no other daytime show could top Y&R ratings. That was all because of Bill Bell, the creator and masterful head writer of the show. But after he passed away all that he masterfully built slowly began to be chipped away with each and every new head writer and executive producer that always came and left. Along the way each and everyone of them would come up with storylines and character changes that went against Bill Bell's bible foundation. Things that he would never do. Killing off John Abbott is a prime example. I mean think about it, if killing off that character was such a great idea than why for years after that they brought John back as a spirit to help advise his adult children. Turning Sharon into a woman that would sleep with multiple men of the same family (Newmans AND Abbotts!!) plus pairing her up with countless other side characters is something he definitely wouldn't have done. Another bad storyline was having us think that Jill was Mrs. Chancellor's lost child only to change it again by making Tucker her actual lost child. Then years later when they came up with making Jill and Lauren half sisters after all those years! WHY??!! That was the final straw for me. I had enough and I decided that I was done with complaining about the show. I knew it was time for me to simply let it go and that's what I did. Now I hear that supposedly a new storyline has developed about Jack not being an actual Abbott and also Victor's half brother. If that's true all I have to say about that is WTF!!! It's horrible to me that the show has turned into what it is now compared to how great it once was. I don't care what anyone who says or thinks that Y&R is still great because the truth is it's not! It really isn't. Not for me and many others who feel exactly the way I do. Y&R will never be the same without Bill Bell's touch.
So special to see Papa Abbott, what a great actor. He should never have been let go. He was such an asset.
I guess he wanted to retire. But he comes back as a ghost.
