  • So obviously by now, you've figured out that Joe and Kram like Lady Gaga a good bit. But one of them (Kram), can only take her in small doses.
    This isn't a one-off case.
Turns out there are a lot of artists, or even genres, that we definitely prefer in small portion sizes.
To wrap up Lady Gaga week, Joe and Kram discuss their favorite artists that must come with some musical calorie counting.
Leave a comment below with some artists that you like, but only in small doses. Thanks for watching!

I found Dylan’s voice difficult at first but crossed the initial pain threshold and now I find his voice almost comforting in the age of American Idol/ The Voice , where it seems every male vocalist in pop/ mainstream rock music wants to sing endless falsetto or sound like Marvin Gaye ( black or white singers).
Personally think Dylan has a great voice . A great “ non- singer” if that makes sense( probably doesn’t)
Ed Sheeran on the other hand might sound lovely to most people but I can’t take in any doses . The “ whininess” , fake rnb “ smoothness” of his voice makes me physically ill tbh
Not a fair comparison I know but I’ll make it anyway

I completely agree. It took me some time with Dylan but I eventually got there. I still have good friends my age who never got there. They respect his songwriting but they don't want to hear him singing them.

I saw a video of Dylan singing his part on We Are The World over and over because they wanted to get the perfect tape and Dylan sounded pretty good. But that ain't his preference in terms of music production. He don't mind there being mistakes and why not? I don't bitch about artists that use autotune and maybe there have been times one of Dylan's producers have used it. But there is some honesty in Dylan's voice. Although i have to be in the mood for some Dylan. Once in the mood, amazing. There are very few artists i never stop listening to.

There's a radio show in the UK called Desert Island discs where the presenter interviews a famous person each week and they pick the 8 songs they would take on a desert island, you get to choose a book along with the Bible and a luxury item. I would love to hear what 8 songs, book and luxury item you guys would take. It's an idea for a future show.

I think, along with The Beatles, Dylan is one of the most chosen artists on Desert Island discs? Like I said, maybe it’s an age thing? We all start off imbibing copious amounts of pissy lager but as we mellow our tastes soon yearn for a fine vintage of red or white.

Bob Dylan's voice has gone through so many varied periods and styles that I actually find the evolution of his singing to be endlessly fascinating and one of the most interesting in music.
And Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate is probably my favorite album that I've only brought myself to listen to from beginning to end maybe twice. That album can take you to a DARK place if you really listen to the lyrics.

Baltimora, Technotronic, Billie Eilish, Sun Kil Moon and Lana Del Rey. Apart from that, Townes Van Zandt and Elliott Smith. Great artists, but so very sad and lost. Saw Townes live 3 months before he passed away. He was very drunk and didn't really know where he was (in Nuremberg) and everybody in the audience felt this might be farewell. I remember there was an asian girl next to me in front of the stage, who cried the whole gig through. His voice was broken by decades of booze and the blues, but it still was one of the most beautiful voices that ever sang to me live. Maybe it was, because it was all true, he was far from being able to fake anything. Another unforgettable experience was the voice of Lee Hazlewood some years later in Berlin. Him I can take in larger doses, he really was a funny guy, and one of the greatest, most distinctive voices ever. He was interviewed by a German magazine only days before his death. They asked him, how knowing about death coming soon would change the way he would go about his day. His answer was: "Let me put it this way, I don't buy green bananas anymore.".

    2. The Smiths : they’re forever in my DNA but I can’t listen to very much these days. As Kramz points out , Morrissey has a lot to do with that....
    3. Radiohead: Are like a sad friend I love dearly but just don’t want to visit too often ...not good for me
    4. Tom Waits: the crazy , beautiful alcoholic Uncle you love catching up with at Xmas/ weddings/ funerals. Funny stories etc..but that’s it
    5. The National: they’re supposed to be good. Everyone says they’re good . They sound good and “ important”. But I’m generally relieved when I turn them off

As for Tom Waits and Nick Cave, they're top ten artists for me, but I I've heard before of other music fans having difficulties with their voices.

Bob Dylan for me was like when I first drank Guiness. Initially, I thought perhaps this isn't for me but I persevered with Guiness as I did with Bob Dylan. But I get it and totally understand anyone not liking Dylan. All I would say on it is that there's a world of difference between the material at different stages of his career, including his voice and how he sounds.
There's a number of artists, in my collection, for whom I own a lot of their material and respect greatly, but only listen to in small doses - Elvis Costello would be an example of that. Country music, especially sung by male artists, is something I can only enjoy in small doses. Oddly, I much prefer Country music performed by female artists. I can only enjoy the 'newer' sub genres of metal in very small doses and anything with growling vocals just gets skipped..

I cringed when the announcement was made that she would be the artist doing a tribute. My daughter, who is also a huge Bowie fan and loves Gaga tried to convince me it could be good. After all, she is talented and artistic, so how bad could it be? Well, as long as she doesn't put on make up and rush through a medley of the most obvious hits American Idol style, it might be Ok, I conceded. Well, my worst fears were realized. Queen is one of the few bands I can take in heavy doses with the caveat that we are talking about their 70s albums and not greatest hits or 80s output. For me the band was so interesting early on and rocked out but with a strange edge that was complimented by so many different styles, 4 different songwriters/3 different vocalists. most definitely Depeche Mode. I’ve been a new Metal-core fan for a couple years, but wanted to go back to my youth and experience the band I used to love one more time. I found myself skipping tracks quite a bit! I’ve been listening to Killswtich Engaged, Code Orange, Fit For A King etc but just couldn’t get through. DP album like I used to. So, just a song here and there was fine, but an entire album…didn’t catch my attention.

I obviously disagree with the harsh metal singing thing since it's my favorite genre but I get it. Vocals have never been something to bother me too much to the point where it ruins a whole album experience so I wouldn't pick any artist that falls under that category. I think I'll go with ABBA for the reason that I can't listen to calm and groovy disco all day long, I need a lot more dynamics and mood changes in my music.

    From my own record collection:
King Crimson. Absolutely love some of their music but the parts I don't love make me less drawn to their albums. " I Talk To The Wind" might be the most beautiful song ever written and something like "Elephant Talk" (sorry Joe) is very catchy but if I listen to a King Crimson album it usually takes time before I'll listen to another one.
AC/DC. I like the band but one album is more than enough medicine for quite a while. Especially since most albums are so similar. It's like watching three similar movies... Do I really need to watch a similar as the fourth?
Pearl Jam. I like much of the music but it is rarely I find myself in a "Pearl Jam"-mode. I might prefer them more one song at the time than a whole album to be honest.

Nick Cave was an intriguing choice because I might agree if we're talking about his later albums, but I could listen to Birthday Party, and those early Bad Seeds records all day long, but that leads me to what Joe mentioned about the voice. one of Cave's influences, Leonard Cohen is that way for me. one album is the sweet spot, but I tire quickly of back to back Cohen. Tom Waits is definitely a classic example, especially since so many of his melodies sound traditional/obvious to go along with that rough voice. Also obvious one trick pony artists like the Ramones, AC/DC and Bob Marley. The bombast of prog metal I can definitely only take in small doses anymore. Your definition of "Small Doses" has confused me for a minute. I need to admit that if I follow your course my answer would be:
    Everyone.
I never listen to more than an album from any artist by more than one album per day. Never did in my life. I even have problems with double/triple albums to digest them in one go. For example, I have always listened to Yes - Topographic Oceans by just one LP side at a time, like each of them is an individual work. Same is true for the extra long CD age releases, where an album is 60+ minutes long and it starts getting repetitive. Is this a short attention span?
I really go for variety and jump from artist to artist and style to style. The advantage I see in it is that I have no songs/albums that "I never need to hear again".
When I think of "small doses", I think more of artists that can be fun but not even a full album at a time, mostly those are "funny", satirical artists...Weird Al Yankovic or Leningrad Cowboys can be fun for a few tunes but not a complete album. The excessive Prince or Zappa albums are the same, I cannot listen to a complete double or triple set from them.

Respectfully disagree. I've spent an entire day listening to all the REM albums. They change thiings up from album to album. I once heard someone say somehere that all REM songs were indistinguishable and I could not disagree more. I can listen to The Beatles all day. The Doors all day. etc etc Honestly any band I truly love - maybe 50 of them - I can listen to all day without getting bored. Maybe I am a bit different from some others - when I find a band/artist I like, I tend to stick with them - I don't always need to find "new talent" - and, in fact, I think many new artists are over-rated just b/c they are new to the scene. This is reflected in alot of music journals lists, I think.

Definitely Dan Bejar. He is a great songwriter and I love Destroyer and The New Pornographers, but the yelp in his voice just kills me sometimes.

Sorry for spelling or syntax: i am in a rush to get my annoying comments over with. I can only be taken in small doses.
Lady Gaga is horrible. The movie "A Star is Born" is really cringeworthy. If would like to never hear another rock anthem from Springsteen again and he has slowed down I think but now he is just not good now or more derivative. Or Queen - thanks Kramz I hate Queen's bombastic sound and May's guitar is always the same. I guess if I liked it I wouldn't care. An hour of Queen Kramz? I can't take more than a half of a song at a time.
I can do without a lot of backup singers, it all depends. CCR songs like "Down on the Corner" make me cringe a little. There is something corny in some country-sounding songs. But I only listen to a few cuts at a time and usually don't go deep into albums unless I like them. Tom Waits only has a few songs I even like - In The Neighborhood is one of his best. It's not just his voice either. Oh I like Counting Crows if not too talky (talking more than whinny bothers me). Elliott Smith .. only small doses too. I hate most funk .. I don't get tired of the Smiths but only have the best of them. Lots of songs I don't know. Metal I don't like in small doses even but there are a few great metal songs. I can listen to male voices much easier than females. Heck I only like about 12 females like Chrissie Hynde, Mary Wells, Barbara Lewis, Laura Nyro, Joplin, Nicks , Karen Carpenter, Joni when she is not so jazzy. Joan Jets' songs suck. Patti Smith is fine in small doses. Anne Wilson is good depending on the song, as is Grace Slick. PJ Harvey if I like the song. And maybe most underreacted is Sarah McLaughlin. I only hear here in small doses but I like all of here songs. Sweet, caring sound.

I don't like Elvis Costello's voice, I think I might be able to get into him if he didn't sound like that.
