  • Lactose intolerance is quite common, especially in Asian countries. The reason behind this is “gene-culture co-evolution”. Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose in milk because they lack the lactase enzyme. A 1981 study found that the percentage of people with lactose intolerance changes from region to region. In East Asia, the numbers are insanely high; 90-100% of East Asians are lactose intolerant.
Lactose is the main carbohydrate in milk. It is a vital energy source for young mammals who depend solely on their mother’s milk for nutrition. They can readily digest lactose, as they have high amounts of an enzyme called lactase. Lactase breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose, which can then be absorbed by the body and converted into energy. However, lactase production begins to decline as we get older. Lactose intolerance is a condition wherein a person cannot digest lactose in milk because they lack the lactase enzyme. Consuming dairy products cause bloating, gas and diarrhea in such individuals.

Humans are the only mammals who continue to consume dairy after infancy. Its completely unnecessary and 75% of the world is lactose intolerant. I wouldn't breast feed or drink milk as a baby, I was given soy milk for the 1st 2 years of my life and thrived. Dairy is high in saturated fat and even if cows aren't pumped full of hormones they produce hormones naturally and they are unnaturally forced to produce milk every year before their calves are ripped away from them and this leads to young girls starting their period at 9 rather 12 or 13. It's also responsible for diabetes and high cholesterol.

In recent studies milk fat has been a good source of healthy fats compared to meat and most plant sources. On cholesterol it doesn't even affect much if you don't eat a lot cheese every meal, high meat + egg compsumption and overeating is to blame. Also there are a lot of easier ways to get diabetes than milk, fruits+juices and added sugar is far more common. You can't really compare soy milk to human/dairy milk as they have different nutrient profile and soy milk doesn't naturally have all necessary nutrients, might as well give fortified water. (While dairy might be unnecessary the map at 0:55 correlates almost exactly with the quality of life index maps)
