I really can’t believe people have the nerve to ask how to save Ralph. He’s a Beef cattle and was feed, cared for to eventually serve his purpose and that’s to put food on the table. Plus as a owner you can control what they eat, so you know your getting a healthy Steer for your freezer, no steroids or antibiotics.

Some people just dont know about Farm Life. Its kinda natural to want to save the life of a critter they have come to be fond of....and at least ask if somehow he can be "rescued". Nerve? Not really. They just come from a different place in life where critters are pets. Not dinner.

I can see where they're coming from but like you said, he was always intended to become food. They knew that right off the bat so it should be expected that he's going to be eaten. It's a hard truth though and I doubt I could do what the Arms Family does. I kinda wish I'd grown up on a farm like this, they seem to be living the dream life. It has it's challenges though.

I lived the farm life we slaughtered so I understand. We never named ours and made a pet like they do,,
but they have alot of people that haven't lived the life ,their aware of that and know will have a reaction.
I just suggested go ahead and slaughter him but don't make a lesson out of it and not announce it.
Do it like he does his goats he doesn't announce the slaughter of the goats.
Appreciate someone that understands both sides👍

Pastures are normally seeded in the fall of the year due to the weather heating up in the spring. The roots will not be established and the lack of rain in the summer will cause your grass to burn up. Your steer has filled out well. Most people don’t understand where their meat comes from. Being a retired farmer myself I was always amazed when city slickers told me that their food came from the grocery store. Farmers feed America and the world.

You need a lawn aerator. Punching holes in the ground, helps the ground to be not only more aerated but when it rains, it can capture more water then otherwise the water would just wash off the top of the soil. Also make s for the seeds to take better in fluffier soil.

Hi Daniel. I just watched your greenhouse video from 4 years ago. I used to be able to grow a lot of vegetables but, since I moved to the Boise mountains at 4300 feet, nothing grows up here but I do have some input for yours. When I lived in Ola at 3000 feet, I had a huge garden and I had one row of 15 tomatoes. I made 2' diameter cages out of 5' tall concrete reinforcing wire (4" squares). I'd cut the wire off the roll at about the 6.5' mark to give me the 2' diameter cages that were 5' tall. I'd cut the wire so the cut ends were sticking out. I'd roll up the cage and overlap a couple of rows then bend the tag ends of the wires over to secure the cage in a tube shape. I drove 6 tee posts, one at each end of the row and one every every 9'. I put three cages between the posts. I then ran a poly rope through the tops of the cages and secured the cages to the rope with 2 zip ties. I also secured the rope to the tops of the tee posts and then anchored the ends to an angled tee post at the ends of the row so the rope was tight and secure. 8 tee posts total and a little over 50' of rope.
I made watering tubes out of a 6' length of 2" PVC. I put a cap on one end and drilled a 1/8" hole just above the cap. I put the watering tubes, cap end down, into the cage through one of the top wire squares, with the cap next to a tomato plant. I used a hose to fill the tubes and let it slowly drain out right next to the tomato plant. Doing it that way, the water goes straight down into the soil and not all over the place. Tomatoes like deep watering so this really works well. I'd water every 2-3 days, filling the tubes twice at each watering. Needless to say, my neighbors enjoyed a very bountiful harvest.
I enjoy your videos and your adventures. Regards from another ex-cop (CHP). Rick

I'm glad you talked about the fescue in the pasture seed... I've been wanting to get some goats but... last year we seeded the yards of a house we were selling... it had fescue because it's drought resistant supposedly... we had a dog that ended up dying from eating something but we couldn't figure out what she'd eaten that she hadn't before... then we learned about some plants may not be toxic until they are under drought... so I've been doing a lot of homework but don't ever feel like I'm learning much other than just grasping at straws... I don't want to bring goats or any other farm animal in unless I can assure what is growing in the space won't kill them... I've even contemplated just killing every blade of grass or weed in my yards and then just plant alfalfa or something a vet will assure won't poison them... I think this video has probably given me more actual information than many of the sources I've been looking at online.

Ralph is freezer bound 👍 My family raised animals for food and I learned a lot about taking care of them. I believe in what you are doing with your farm. Not that it really matters because it is your farm! My Dad raised a 1800lb gertrudes/hereford cross breed that he would ride while bringing the small herd home for feeding. It was pretty cool to watch Mac kneel to let my Dad on his back and then when Dad got off he would wait for his treats and head rub. Many of his neighbors were astonished at how well they trusted each other. A sight to see for sure. The only trouble Mac ever got into was hopping a 4 strand bob wire fence to breed the neighbors cattle. When Dad realized he was out he’d hop in his truck and as soon as Mac saw the truck he would start to the house easily clearing the fences back home. My Dad would show up and Mac would play so innocent till Dad asked him what he was doing. Mac acted just like a dog does when it’s caught. So funny to watch those 2 together 😂

Looking forward to seeing how the pasture turns out after the rain comes and starts things growing. A lot of people don't understand farm life if they have not experienced it first hand. Yes Ralph is a cool dude but he's always had one purpose and that is to fill your freezer.

I like the more aggressive planting cause when it rains it will hold more moisture to help the grass

You did an excellent job of explaining the machines to me and I have never even been on a tractor. You made a city girl understand. Thank you

You have made no secret of Ralph's role and future. I have raised my own beef and pork in the past, but now I buy a half from a local farmer, who raises beef on pasture and a little grain towards the last month. Just easier for me now that I am older. That seeder does a good job and hopefully will help get your pastures back in shape.

I grew up on a farm and my dad raised steers, they were primarily for peoples freezers, that's where meat comes from. Surprise?
