Nice video, so have you found something better than the irig for recording straight into the phone with ease? So disappointing that the irig pans the audio hard L or R

And so this is my comprehensive review of this contraption. It's worthy to own. It'll work. It can make lovely recordings. It has whizbang features. It'll be fun to use. You will glean some knowledge of using it. Because it has a comprehensive software interface. You'll have to learn how to use it. Some people will never learn how to use it. But they might get by? And record themselves singing and playing their acoustic guitar with 2 microphones. 2 cheap, SM-57 & 58, microphones. Which will make you sound every bit as good as Michael Jackson. As he basically used a 57/58 in the form of the SM-7. That uses a 57 capsule within it. So there you go. If it's good enough for Michael Jackson? Do you need better than that? I don't think so. I know so. And so no. You don't need anything better. That is more than great sounding. And I highly recommend that cheap microphone. As that's what the SM stands for. Studio Microphone-57 and 58 and 7. It's all the same capsule inside. And only engineers like myself know this. Because I talk to the engineers from the company. Because engineers get other engineers on the phone. You get customer support. Which really isn't much. Because they really don't know much more than you.. And they are reading from cards. Since you don't know how to read? And oh it's no good. It only goes out to 17,000 Hz. So that is inadequate for your use, right? WRONG BOZO BREATH! No that is perfectly fine and 100% adequate. 20,000 Hz is a misnomer of misinformation. Only if you are under the age of 20 might you hear 20,000 Hz? And if it's not there? You're not going to miss it. 15,000 Hz is good enough. Therefore a microphone that goes out to 17,000 Hz. Is gooder, enough. As it will take you far's.
And so you do not need a Better microphone than a SM-57 or 58. You only need a big piece of foam on those. In addition to those. When you cut vocals. Because without those big foam pop filters. On top of those microphones. You will sound like amateur hour without them. This is a given. All that extra low-end you like? In your headphones. Comes out sounding like mud. From loudspeakers. That's why we cut off. All of the low frequencies below 300 Hz. On pop vocals. That's what amateurs never do.
And dynamic range? My recordings have No Dynamic Range. There are over 20 microphones going. I have over 20, cheap, DBX, dynamic range limiters and compressors going on virtually every microphone. And I am slamming them hard. Real hard. There is no dynamic range. Though you might hear some dynamic range? It is only because he dynamic range. Everything is all at the same volume level all the time. The vocals are extremely crushed with a dynamic range limiter. Everything is. And I commit to track. I record that. So it cannot be undone. It's the way I want it to be. And it sounds better when you record that. Then, trying to do that on playback to something that was not processed. During the time of recording. It'll still work. It'll still sound good. It won't sound the same. It won't have that Punch and Vibrancy. It'll just sound blah. It will lack excitement. It will lack punch. Because an ounce of punch. It is worth a pound of sound. Remember that. Live by that. Embrace that. You'll thank me later. That's what Bob Clearmountain does. That's what he learned. That's how he learned. That was the motto. At the recording studio we worked for. An Ounce of Punch. Is worth a Pound of Sound. Oh how true. Record it, that way. Commit like that. When you record it.
If you don't have the hardware to do that with? If your audio interface device offers the DSP processing to do that in software within? Go for it! Do it! Commit that processing to the track you are recording. It's going to lock you in. You're going to love it! Everything will sit right in the mix. You can hear it in my stuff. Listen to how those vocals all mostly sit in the mix. Some dialed in better than others. But I get no sound checks. I get no MIC checks. I derive the sound and the mix. Within the first 60 seconds. Of the bands first song. Then I just lock in and keep it that way throughout the set. Even if it's not quite to my liking. That would be because. Of the leakage and bleed. Between instruments and microphones. And I have to skew the mix. To make it listenable and cohesive. Because some instruments may sound grossly out of place? And so I have to skew the mix. To homogenize the mix. Not always to my liking. But I can change no microphones. I can make no adjustments to them. I just have to roll with what I get. This is the art of live FM Broadcast Mixing. It's a different style of working. There is no Perfection. The acoustics are bad. The background noise is bad. The band is too close together. There is no separation. Everything bleeds into everything else. Sometimes I have more drums. In the lead vocal microphone. Than I have lead vocal. I have to skew that mix. To keep the drums in check. Which will affect the vocal quality of sound. It might get a bit soft and nondescript? Otherwise the drums will appear overly brash sounding. And that would screw up the mix. So I have to make terrible technical compromises. With some of these recordings. It's inevitable. Working under profoundly Haphazard conditions. And I get what I can for live FM broadcast, live TV broadcast. Live Internet streaming.
And so I've done this professionally for many decades now. Nobody does it better than me. Others do it as good as I do. They are incredibly competent professionals. With similar facilities to mine.
So this is the way it really goes. If you want to get into the industry? But you are likely to go completely broke. We all do. This is what we do. This is all we do. And we have to ride with the good times and the bad. As times are not always good. Especially within our industry today. It's never been good. It has only gotten worse in recent years. There are too many people. That really have not much to offer. And they will never get anywhere. That's the way it is for most of us. It's only the very lucky few. That have dumb luck. That land on a Hit. It's simply the role of the dice. It's the ROCK 'N' ROLL LOTTERY I call it. Because that's what it is. And you have to play. To win. And you have to invest the money to play. It can cost a lot of money. And you get no guarantee of winning the big cash prize. I never have. Most don't. It's only the lucky few. From dumb luck. That requires no talent either. But better if you have some. As you will be self-assured you have talent. I know I do. I know others who do. I know famous ones who don't. But there's nothing we can do about that. Somebody already killed Selena. Some years back. One of her group B supporters killed her. Because she was insane. She's behind bars now for the rest of her life. Because she killed Selena That was a horrible tragedy. By a wacko woman with a gun. That was in charge of her fan club. Jesus Christ! What the hell?
So the pop music industry can be fraught with much danger. It's not for the faint of heart. It can terribly, affect your life. The wrong way. Fame and fortune can be very difficult for some to deal with. As you are no longer your own person anymore. You are a celebrity character like a cartoon. Porky pig, bunny bugs, dorky duck, Elmers fudge, Yosemite Sinatra. And others. All real people famous cartoon characters! And people want to rip animation cells from them! Oy vey.
Get this unit for yourself. It'll do you well. It'll get you started. You'll be on your way to poverty in no time! I can guarantee it.
One day when I grow up I want to be Linda Ronstadt! In my next lifetime.

@@Newmusicreview Yaah that is a major oversight. I'm still probably going to hang on to it because the autosetup did amazing work considering I don't have that typical booming radio voice and i work in a room that tends to generate some noise. My Vocaster one has a power button. I'm just not a big fan of having my mic constantly on and audio constantly being picked up. Thank you for responding to my comment. Much appreciated!

You need a DI BOX for gutair. So maybe the rodecaster be better because you use 2 inputs for stereo and then use input for a mic. You can also buy a Radial ProAV1 box which turns one input to stereo output.

So the entire Pro Audio Market has been besieged. By these entry-level toys. And worthy units. With good specs and features. With switches and knobs. Are,, priced much higher. Sound great. Work great. They do not record anything themselves. They require software on the computer. Just like this gizmo. But basic enough to plug into a smart phone. To record from external microphones and line level inputs. What a concept! Maybe it'll catch on? As it did over 30 years ago. Some of us still have those 30 something-year-old audio interfaces. They are only 16 bit, 44.1 kHz. And they make simply lovely recordings. With all their, tragic, PCM encoding, faults and foibles. Because PCM digital sound actually sucks. It's grainy. It's segmented. At any bit depth. At any sample rate. Let me be clear about that. PCM is highly flawed. It's a 70+ year old technology. My Sony, PCM F-1 is now over 40 years old. And it made some lovely recordings. And still can. But it's only 16 bit at 44.1 kHz. And that sounds perfectly lovely. Because that's basically. All that any analog gear can reproduce. Analog gear cannot reproduce 24-bit. That's 140 DB of nonexistent dynamic range. Audio gear typically can't deliver much more than 90-100 DB of dynamic range. Which means 140 DB is Bogus! It is but it isn't. No audio gear can reproduce that. But you can record that. That doesn't mean you get 140 DB of dynamic range. That means you get about 95 or so DB of dynamic range. In your 140 DB window of dynamic range. So if you record too low or too high. It'll still be within that window of 140 in digital. It won't reproduce like that. Because audio gear can't deliver that. And idiots think it does. They are recording a 24 bit they've got 140 DB of dynamic rang!
No they do not. That's a phallus, see? They are Dick heads. That's a phallus, see? And depending on how fast you say that? It can mean 2 different things! But sounds the same. And that's the dynamic range you are getting. It looks much larger than it is.
And then the sample rate nonsense. That's where the resolution is. Not in the bit depth. I recorded at, 96 kHz sampling at 16 bit. That sounds lovely. Because now your high-frequency response. Goes to the dogs. Up to 40 kHz. You can't hear that high. Only dogs can. But you want the utmost infidelity! That you can't hear. Oh sure. I can hear it. You can hear it. Nobody else can hear it. That's why 16 bit at 44.1 kHz is, just fine.
Now think about this kiddos. I'm so old. I predate digital. I go back to full track mono. Yes I do. And Great Sounding, Analog Tape. Really doesn't perform much better than, 12 bit at 32.5 kHz sampling. 65 DB of dynamic range. And that's all! How could any recording sound good then? I don't know ask the Beatles? Ask Steely Dan. Ask the Doobie Brothers. Ask John Denver. I don't know? It shouldn't have been possible.
But we don't listen to specifications. We listen to music and narrations. I don't listen to bit depth. I really don't care about sample rate above 32.5 kHz. Though I do prefer the sound of 44.1 kHz to that of 32.5 kHz. But I've also made recordings at 11.025 kHz sampling. For AM radio quality out to, 5000 Hz of response. That's all you need for spoken word. To give you that nice round old-fashioned AM radio quality sound. Without the fading and hetero dining. Squealing and static. None of that. Just good clean solid sound with a response out to 5 kHz. AM radio style. As I also do archival spoken word and narrative recordings. Not just musical recordings. I run the gamut. Because I have to. I had to. My audio was being beamed around the world via satellite. To hundreds of millions of people. Not just 3 to, 10 million people. And you have to be the best engineer in the world. To do this. And I have to know more than others. Even more than the College Professors. Because they don't know how to do what I do. Therefore they teach. As they have their college degrees. And I don't. Let me be clear about that also. Because some of those degrees are bogus.
That's right. I don't need to pay somebody. $20,000-$80,000. To tell me what to go read at the library. Librarians can do that for free for you. And then you get to read all the books you want. For Free! It's FREE! It's all FREE! A Free College Education. Awaits you at the library! You just don't get a poor dead sheepskin telling you you're supposed to know something. Because you paid somebody exorbitant money. For nothing! That's stupid to do! You're supposed to go to higher education to get higher education. Not to get stupid! So what's with that? You go to the library! That's why Ben Franklin invented the library!
No Benny Franklin didn't invent the library. He just built one in Philadelphia. Along with the University. And he used a lot of semicolons I discovered. I don't know how to use semicolons. I'm basically illiterate. I'm an engineer. And I can, right, gooder enough. To get Bly. Let me please to clear enough for that.
And so how much are they paying you for this review? The Audio Gizmo? I mean, sure. That's decent compensation for this lovely review. Of a fine entry level beginner product.. With cool Whizbang Software Interface. Every kid will love playing with. So I see the logic behind this. Even if you don't use Logic Software. And I don't. I'm not Mac-based. But I know plenty of stupid people who are. I won't hold that against them. But I always thought Apple was ripping people off. That was announced just a couple of days ago they have been. $1 trillion wasn't enough. I love cutthroat business tactics. It makes you feel real good about your purchase. Not!
So I'm quite pleased. I was never an apple pursuer. I like oranges better. I love citrus. Apples are good. Don't eat the seeds. You don't want any cyanide. Oranges don't have cyanide. Some just have seeds others none. They don't have any cyanide seeds like Apples. And don't take the Brown acid. A word to the wise from 1972 at Woodstock. Something we have all had no problems living with. Woodstock. Not Brown acid. And I was supposed to be at Woodstock-2. But I couldn't get the time off from NBC-TV News. Dammit all! That would've been my one and only gold record. As I was invited to double up with a colleague/friend. But I couldn't make it. Union rules. I was subbing for a colleague during Ratings Sweeps Week. And they couldn't let one of their best audio engineers go. Me. Dammit all! It's always something you know. Something that keeps you from reaching your peak. Like responsibilities. Like having to be an adult at times. What a concept! Maybe it'll catch on?
So now I'm retired at 68. And these stupid choices are mind blowing. Nobody needs all this nonsense. It is counterproductive. You need to just plug in a microphone. Hit a switch. Tweak a level. And start recording. That's all. It doesn't need to have whizbang features. I mean a real time limiter would be nice. Yes. Some EQ would be nice. Yes. High pass filters and all that. Yes. And some of them have that capability. Others don't.
But when Bob Clearmountain tells me. He likes the simplest first, portable Apogee to be offered. And tells me he really likes the sound of the oldest one. Better than the newest one. I said to Bob. Do you realize. What you just said about your wife's company, Apogee? He said yes but… I really prefer the sound of the first one best. That says it all to me. That gizmo has a switch and a gain control. And that's it. Plug it into a MacBook. And away you go. Making recordings the same way Bob Clearmountain does! As he was a colleague of mine. At Media Sound Studios, NYC. And he doesn't care for the sound of analog tape. He likes pure digital. I still like to some of the things that, analog tape did. As it offered its own, Tone Shaping called Saturation.. And everything gets saturated. It only depends on how much you want. Because just about everything over,, 0-VU, get slightly saturated with analog tape. And that you can push it further. And get more saturation. But the level never goes any higher. So it is self-limiting also. We used it for its self-limiting with saturation. And plug-ins do not achieve the same justice. I find they just garbage up the sound. And that's supposed to signify, analog. It really doesn't. It signifies. You have mangled your audio, terribly. Oh boy! It's a great plug-in! It makes everything sound like crap analog! Bob Clearmountain doesn't want that. Why should you? I'll go with Bob. Every time.

Well honey baby child. What you are describing what you want to do. Requires no less than a 3 or rather 4 input, computer audio interface device. You need to have 4 inputs not just 2 inputs. It's only a 2 input gizmo. You need 4 inputs. And you will be using 3 of those. One for your incoming stereo backing track. One for the guitar microphone. And one for your narrative microphone. Your voiceover microphone. That's 4 inputs honey. That's what you need to have. And that's only a 2 input unit. As in Two. As opposed to To or Too. I know that can get confusing to have three, 2's. Because that would be 6 inputs you might require? And so?
I don't recommend these stupid interfaces. For a beginner Music Recording Engineer. For that. You need one of those 8 input/8 output, computer audio interface devices. At a minimum! So you can plug-in 8 microphones to record a rock band with all at once! Because you can do it with 8 microphones. It is doable. And sometimes preferable to only have 8 microphones. And not 20 or more.
So you don't want this contraption. You want one that accepts 8 microphone inputs. All simultaneously if needed. And it will be, needed. Guaranteed. You need 4 microphones on the drum set. 2 overheads, kick and snare. All going to separate tracks. You need Bass Guitar. You need Lead Guitar. You need Rhythm Guitar. You need keyboards. And then you need a vocal. You're going to need at least 8 inputs. Simultaneously all at once.
So don't waste your money on this entry-level contraption. Get an entry-level 8 input computer audio interface device. And it's not going to have any extra whizbang features! It won't. It's 8 microphones in. It's 8 line levels out. So you can plug the output into an analog mixer input. And mix your digital recording in analog if you want. Some want. Others love software, instead. And since there is no great free multitrack software available. The handwriting is on the wall.
Now can you plug that 8 input interface into your iPhone? Likely not? I don't know? It may then require an external, wall wart power supply? And then it might work? With an iPhone.. And Garage Band. I don't know? But that's my line of thinking. Without looking at the manual. Without knowing the device. Based upon my previous experiences and knowledge. Of other devices. As I don't need whizbang features. I just need to plug a microphone in and record it just the way it is. Bob Clearmountain does the same thing with his MacBook and one or 2, inputs. For a vocal overdub. With his Apogee computer audio interface device. The small cheap,, first one. And I'm sure you can find those used on eBay for a great price. As they must be going on 20 years old maybe 15? And was certainly good enough for Bob Clearmountain. So it's good enough for me and you. You don't need better. You don't need newer. You just need to record a microphone well. But you might need multiple inputs? More than 2? Depending on what you want to do? But if you don't know what you're doing? How can you make a choice or decision? You still can. It might not be the right decision or choice? And then you beat yourself up over that. Because you didn't have the knowledge before your purchase. Oh well. You have learned something. And you have a fine device. I am relatively certain. You'll be able to use still. And in the future. In addition to your 8 input device you'll get. And then you'll have 10 inputs. Simultaneously with both devices plugged in. And ported to your software inputs. And Voilà! You never thought you would be recording 10 simultaneous microphones? And to me that's nothing. As I have recorded between 16 and 46 simultaneous microphones. Because I have the interfaces to do that with. And I go to 3 separate 24 track digital recorders. 2 dedicated ones and a computer. All simultaneous at the same time. And that gets a bit hairy. But if something fails? I've got back up to my backup. That's called Redundancy. And we do that to prevent a technical loss. Because it happens. Shit, happens. Equipment breaks down. It's going to break down in the middle of the recording.
