last friday was a mess for me. i should of been prepared and was not. lesson learned be prepared. thank you phil for the live streams. always learning from your videos.
The true key is the time consuming and arduous task of experience coupled with a long process of being able to read your dance floor. Naturally all DJ's have predetermined sets organized in their library. The only complication occurs with trying to accommodate requests along the way. Good topic - Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
Funny thing as some kind of veteran. Your videos make me reflect on what I do when I play. To be honest, I didn't ask myself how I pick the next. I just entertain myself. I have to get in the zone, and it just happens. Sounds like a meta thing, but it is really a process that starts way earlier. And that's from a guy who plays with vinyl. Thanks so much for the slap in the face to make me think about stuff that I don't really think about.
Approaching things from a different angle can be very useful. And as you say, sometimes it can be even more useful when you've been doing this for a long time.
@digitaldjtips As someone who is from the old breed of vinyl DJ's. You and your Team at Digital DJ tips, has most definitely made my transition into new DJ technology so much easier to embrace. Plus the fact that you also respond to our comment's on the difference media platforms, also makes you and your Team amazing and makes us, your viewer's, feel much more respected and HEARD! Which in turn, makes me highly respect your company in return. Thanks again Phil.
Really useful lesson! I especially liked the Shazam tip which could be useful if DJing in a city you’re not familiar with. I think mini sets are a great idea as they give you a few pre practiced sections whilst still maintaining flexibility to move around your playlist as the gig evolves. 👍
You don’t necessarily have to know your music, but just be great at the way you organise your music. Organisation is key. If you’re organised, it’s easier to preview one or 2 tracks to find your next play.
It's true that with modern ways of analysing a music collection, and as you say, organising it, having to know each track inside out is slightly less important than it was back in the vinyl days, but I would still argue it is one of the key skills of DJing, and you ignore it at your peril.
I choose a song to start and search those with a similar BPM and head off on the journey from there. BPM changes throughout the set as appropriate but -for me - it has to flow as much as possible. (Original song preparation done before the event like you say, Phil).
Hello, DDT What is the type of video controller Phil uses for the video programming of the shows on his desk to his left. i love the ease of him being able to go live and switch camera shots. Please. Thanks
I'm still baffled that there are dj's out there that have tens of thousands of tracks on their hard drive,, I have 2500 and need to cull down on that as well
Isn't the number of tracks you have on a hard drive related to the kind of event you're doing? For example, I DJ mostly weddings but feel I have to have my very large library of tracks (about 10,000 songs) at all times. You never know what someone will request at a wedding reception.
People usually start out as music fans, then music collectors, then DJs. I suppose nowadays some people just decide to be a DJ without having collected music. If you play to people of all ages at all kinds of events then you need music of all genres and from all decades. You can't cover that in 2500 tracks.
Ending with a banger always makes sense, but people like to have a sense that things will be ending soon. That's when you can dip the energy a little bit before your grand finale.
I use the colour of the waveforms to decide the energy of a track, usually the brighter and more colourful the waveform the more energetic it is, but be careful it doesn’t always work for techno.
Yo! How many songs on average per mini set? I will do groups of three songs from the same era. How many songs in that mini playlist?? Or is that not enough?

I keep forgetting names of tracks or artist. So I found I have to start writing the songs names down to remember. I need to start clearing out the junk. 😂
Using the artwork can be a good way around this because, certainly back in the vinyl days, we used to find tracks in our boxes based on what the cover looked like, often rather than the actual name of the track.
@@digitaldjtips That's a pretty good tip. A lot of the music I've been getting lately have the art work attached. But a lot of the old tracks I have never came with it.

We learn more from our mistakes than we do from our successes, so take solace in that.
Planning, preperation and good music help massively.
Even us old vinyl DJs would write key and tags on the record sleeve to help and sort them into beginning, middle and end of set piles.
👍
Yes, that's true!

Yes, we didn't even touch on requests here. That's a whole other story, but thank you for bringing it up, Joe.
@@digitaldjtipsdj Malibu in the get down told you how to handle requests. Unless is misty holloway

Number 1 . Thumbs Up , great Content as Always 👍🏻
Much appreciated!
LOVE the content Phil! Thanks!
I've never heard of anyone trying to connect two laptops in this way, and I don't think it's possible.
Know your music. Great topic 👍🏼

We use an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO.
i actually practice every transition and record it.. it takes a lot of time but that's the most fun part of djing.
It’s all good!
Great video
Thanks for the visit
I'm still baffled that there are dj's out there that have tens of thousands of tracks on their hard drive,,
I have 2500 and need to cull down on that as well
Same here! Dude, how do they know all those tracks? My question all the time
Last time I spoke to him, Laidback Luke had about 2,500 and he's been DJing for most of his adult life.
Isn't the number of tracks you have on a hard drive related to the kind of event you're doing? For example, I DJ mostly weddings but feel I have to have my very large library of tracks (about 10,000 songs) at all times. You never know what someone will request at a wedding reception.

What are your thoughts on crescendoing during the final set and ending with a banger? Then the lights come on? Rather than decreasing the intensity.
It is true that with modern DJ systems, there are so many ways of seeing things about your music as well as hearing it.
I like this vid a lot.
I'm glad you found it helpful, Jason.
And don't forget the track filter option on at least the more recent Pioneer CDJs.
Yes, very good point. As a couple of people have pointed out in the comments, thank you for bringing this up.
