Boy, this really takes me back to my teenage years. I was first dialing up to local BBSs in the late 80. When telnet came along and we could reach a server at a local college that operated a BBS that let us telnet to a bunch of places. Back then, talking to someone on the internet in another state was a big deal. lol

I normally use telnet to test port forwarding is working correctly. Mainly for printers - if you can telnet on port 9100, it proves the port forward works and the device is online. Very useful tool.

You got some nice examples, but wouldn’t it be easier to use nmap to check if a port is open and wget or curl to dump pages?

Hello there. Tim here. I have been writing a python scirpt, set of two to clear. One is the host socket server running on a Raspberry pi 3B+, and another running on my Mac OSX Catalina Mac Pro desktop, which is the client side of the TCP/IP socket comm duo. I first launch the ssrpi1 on the Pi as the server and it waits for trafic and prints out to the console status and info data and any error msg's. And indicates when it sends something back to the client on my Mac. Right now it monitors a firedepartment app I have running on the Pi and lets me know via socket comms if it quits and then stuff like telling me the temp if I enter 'temp' from the client side which immideiately replies with the CPU/GPU info in ˚C/˚F. I want to know is there w way to do this in telnet as the client? When I do it from my Mac it logs in fine but when I send it a command such as 'temp' or 'hello' or whatever, it always replies that my command is unknown which is fine because that is my server side code sending it back. I am guessing the client via telnet is not sending string data. Any ideas on how I can send commands such as 'temp' and 'hello' etc so that it works like my client Python program does? THanks Tim...

That is the original star wars, entirely made in ascii text. Telnet can also been used to send email through smtp.

Outgoing email would be connected to via port 25, not 22. 22 is SSH.

she does say port 22 for smtp (outgoing mail)... Rick is correct

ok, but she clearly typed the correct port. So what's the point of saying something? ... Just to be right? Just to call someone out on misspeaking? ... give me a break

    • @AdamPoniatowski

because port 22 is the biggest mistake one can make, if you make yourself look like the unix/linux expert... 22 = SSH. A mistake is a mistake... better to point it out, than to keep quiet
