  • The seventh day of the seventh lunar month is Qixi Festival(七夕), widely regarded as China's Valentine's Day, it is the most romantic traditional festival in China.
Do you know how did the Qixi Festival come about? There was a romantic legend of two lovers, Zhinü and Niulang.
There once was a beautiful and ingenuity weaver girl named Zhinü. She was the youngest daughter of the Jade Emperor and the Heavenly Queen Mother. She was responsible for weaving colorful clouds. One day, she came down from heaven with her six sisters. While playing in the river, she heard a pleasant sound of a flute. Following the sound, she found a young man by the river. This man had lost his parents at a young age and had been abandoned by his brother and sister-in-law. He lived only with an old cow. So people called him Niulang(cowherd).
Zhinv and Niulang fell in love at the first sight. They got married. A year later, they had a twin boy and girl. They lived happily. Zhinv weaved while Niulang farmed. But soon, Zhinv's mother, Heavenly Queen Mother found out that Zhinv was married to a cowherd. She was so angry that she sent Heavenly soldiers to capture Zhinv.
The heavenly soldiers caught Zhinv and took her back. Niulang rushed to put their children into the baskets, carrying them to chase his wife. Suddenly, the old cow started to fly and carried Niulang and the kids to catch up with Zhinv.
Zhinv also tried to reach out to her children. The angry Heavenly Queen Mother used her golden hairpin to create a big river to separate them, which was the Milky Way. Unable to cross the Milky Way, the poor couples cried sadly. The Magpies were moved by their love. They flew up to the sky and built a bridge over the Milky Way for them to meet each other. Ever since Zhinv and Niulang celebrated their reunion on the Magpie Bridge every year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month.
Then, Chinese girls worship Zhinnv to beg for wisdom and a good spouse on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar every year.
