    Steve saying he's going back to practicing is a terrifying thought to every other drummer out there. The fact that he loves dogs and still is as humble as ever speaks volumes about him.

    • @Frank1979Zappa

      Isn‘t terrifying, musicians do that all the time.

    I get how drummers would dig a book on technique by Gadd. However, as a non-musician, I'd love for him to write a memoir.

      Won’t happen. Not enough ego in this dude. Plus, why would he waste his time typing a memoir when he could be playing drums?

    • @scurvybro8850
      @scurvybro8850 2 года назад +1

      @@johnnatelli3841 You might be right about his lack of ego. However, he did choose to stop playing the drums long enough to "waste" time writing a book about drumming technique. So, he clearly can both play and write.

    This is great to hear. Fellow Rochesterian and fellow ESM grad but it was 20 years after I got out of college before I got a chance to meet him and play with him on 2 gigs. It was an honor and a great memory. Thought it would be tough for me to hang with but he made it easy. That flow! He was so humble and personable and grooved like nothing else.

    I had a great drum teacher - Trevor Tomkins - who taught me this concept to start and finish phrases in different places. For example if there are eight quavers in a bar of 4/4 try starting your phrase on each quaver and it will also end on a different quaver right? Also try doing this whilst playing different types of rock, jazz, funk grooves etc. And then you put them in a musical context you’re brain will recognise and then they will actually become part of your performance.

    I’ve had the book for about a week now. It is brilliant in concept and in just challenging yourself to learn these (Gaddiments) rudiments in another part of the bar is a lot of fun.. I’m enjoying this book so much. You sorta get a glimpse of SG’s inner groove as he permutates various stickings in his playing.. I have a Chick Corea album and in one of the tunes, when the song builds and starts to reach its peak, he’s stretching this thing and taking waaayy further than most guys would ever dare to.. the first time I listened I was like “ oh holy shit, what did he just do “.. as far as I see SG, he’s immortal in the world of drumming..

    Just before the lockdown , I started doing exactly the same thing. When the pandemic happened, I continued to write all of my creative rhythmic concepts down in one, two or four bars each....all great feeling and great sounding advanced stickings & rudimental combinations that I had never played before but all of which felt wonderful within the hands and upon both the drum set and the drum pad as a brand new "phrasing" concept. Initially, I started with just a few rhythmic stickings and built up the content until it started to accumulate. I organized them by numbering each one of them and, over time, the content grew to 50 pages.....then to 100 pages with about 6 to 9 different exercises and patterns on each page. Now, after nearly a year having gone by, I have over 300 pages & over 2500 completely different exercises all of them featuring the same displacement concepts that you discussed. Now I have all of these enormously hip and usefully applicable rhythms along with all of the materials I have compiled over 45 years of teaching. It, too will be my contribution to the world of drumming to help others see what many of the possibilities are & to perceive how they can be played.Who knew?

      @@TheVibeChamber Certainly. I am transcribing the entire works on Finale to place it all into acceptable top quality book form and I am going to record my entire percussive compilation of over 45 years in the studio with a 4 camera set-up and incredible recorded sounds all to edited professionally and made to be purchased as a complete "work." I have direct contact with several top publishers including the one Steve mentioned. So, in addition to the recent 300+ pages of material I've created during the lockdown....there are 45 years of additional concepts that I am organizing in the same way as well. I will be seeking a distribution deal with one of the major publishers and will have an online presence.
