You know what's freakin' awesome, Clisare? I've been on duolingo learning Irish for 40 days straight and I fully understood the first 30 seconds of this video without the subtitles. I don't care if that seems like a small thing, tá mé bródúil as.
Yay!
Maith thú! 🙌🏻
Ta mé bródúil asat!
@@LoideainTheScribe Go raibh maith agat :)
Maith thú! I have done the whole course and am taking others. It takes a long time to gain any level of comfort, but it works if you work at it!
“That you may die without a priest” . . . I can’t think of anyone other than the Irish coming up with that one 😂
"Gan an sagart" actually means "without the priest". "Without a priest" is "gan sagart"
Between the priest not showing up as I was dying here laughing and the red d******a, this video had me in stitches - God what a great language we have😅😅😅
So here's what I found interesting. I watched the video, then I listened to it, and Irish sounds almost Norse. I don't mean Scandinavian, but like old Norse. Almost like Icelandic. I found that fascinating.
Anthropologists believe they came from the same roots. If you look at the names of the old celtic gods, and old norse gods, as well as the old German gods, they all have similar names
Celtic and German is kinda related
That's not surprising, since all our cities were founded by the Vikings. The word for "table" is the same in Irish as in Swedish (bord) and our word for "snake" - nathair - is derived from the Norse "nadr". The Vikings intermarried with the Irish and our language absorbed some Viking influences.
I wouldn't base your udnerstanding of Irish pronounciation off this video.
I’m so glad I also watched your “how to piss off an Irish person”! Hopefully one day when I’m able to visit Ireland I’ll be able to avoid having any of those curses fired in my direction.
I wonder, would you be willing to share some Irish blessings as well? I would enjoy learning those as well.
Love your content Clare, take care :)
I feel great in my learning that while I had to look at the subtitles to understand, I was mostly looking at the Irish and not the translation. I'm making progress!
Keep up the videos as Gaeilge le do thoil, a Chlisare!
I have had so many of those curses and insults thrown my way in so many different languages, I can now meet my maker knowing that I saved the best, those in Irish Gaeilge, for last. Wait a sec...I am meeting my maker, right?
Tapaidh leat, à Chlisare! Tha seo uabhasach innteanach. Feumaidh mi à n-ionnsachadh ann an Gàidhlig na h-Alba.
Níl ach Duolingo Gaeilge agam. Déanaim na ceachtanna ar líne ar mo ríomhaire gach maidin. Is iad seo na físeáin Irish language content gur is aoibhinn liom, and a part of the reason (besides the class humour!) I subscribed to your channel years ago. You're definitely doing your part to infuse life and relevance into one of Europe's most ancient extant languages, mar tá mallachtaí tábhachtach sa saol agus not to be lost to the ages! 😋
I've heard some additional bits - such as 'May the devil make a ladder out of your spine to pick the apples in hell' and "may you have diarrhea on your wedding night' :) Go raibh maith agat, maith thú! Is brea liom.
Love the video... We Irish can be so vicious ouch lol. . It always fascinates me though, just how different our regional dialects are for such a small country. I'm a Kerry girl and I speak Munster Gaeilge and I was correcting your pronunciations but also knowing that you speak Connacht Gaeilge.
Mallacht eile i nGaeilge
'Tá tú níos dúr ná leathcheann'
Yeah well also I’m not a natural speaker, I have Connacht learned Irish from school and then Leinster Irish from college AND I’m out of practice so my pronunciation is all over the place and I do know that 😞
@@ClisareCeapaim go bhfuil do chuid Gaeilge go h-an mhaith ar fad agus tá do físeán go léir go h-an mhaith freisin🙂🙂🙂
That's one of the handy things about learning Irish in school, particularly in primary school where you have a different teacher every year - one year you're told that "beidh" is pronounced "by" and a year later, it's supposed to be pronounced "beg". Most helpful for small kids who have only ever spoken English...
Just found my lineage in scotland and ireland. Funny thing is i always thought the language is dead. Im in california usa, i work with 2 people who speak it well. One whose from ireland herself. Was never a dead language to begin with but im very happy to see it coming back.
I was folding my laundry and RUclips was just chugging along. I heard a familiar voice saying "na rudaí dana...." And I stopped folding and thought to myself "Oh hell, what's Clare teaching us today?" Hope you're well. o/ Slán. :)
I find the curses and swears in native old languages so intresting always less agressive yet pratical relating to everyday things in life. In some ways it gives you a look into the mind set in those times. That said may all of these befall Vlad.
Absolutely loved this video, but the scary thing is that I'm pretty sure that my great great grandmother said a few things very similar to this and it triggered a childhood memory so now I'm wondering if she was trying to curse at someone when I just thought it was beautiful because I never understood the language lol I really hope that you are able to do more videos like this, thank you for sharing and all your hard work 😊👍❤👍 Much love from New Hampshire in the USA ❤❤
Just one thing - "lean", pronounced "lann" actually means "to follow". The Irish word for "sorrow" is "léan" (note the accent - we call it a fada - over the letter "e") which is pronounced like the English word "lane".
I'm watching this in slower speed just to learn properly 😆 gonna use them. Thanks a mill ☺️
Teach us more please. I love hearing curses..The Irish "may you have red diarrhea is a good one - - -It's as good as the Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times"
Planning to put this on my essay, wish me luck guys!
I could listen to you all day. You are the only one who could make a curse sound good! LOL! That was great fun. Thanks!
CLISARE!!!! This was GLORIOUS!!! I REEEEAAAALLLLYYY want to learn Gaelic but given that I am getting my doctorate in psychology and trying to work on my dissertation…. It’s going to have to wait a bit lol. This was truly brilliant though and the one about the cat cursing someone is pretty spot on. Well done you!
these are so mean I love them
It’s doesn’t matter how well wood is glued it always has some movement on the joins. I believe that was likely the reason for the cracking or rapid changes in air humidity.
I thought you were going to give us the equivalents of English swear words, not that i am frigging disappointed as I am not that shallow! Yeah right, I enjoyed it very much!
Girl you give me good laughs on a regular basis. Those were great. Now if I could just learn how to make my tongue work correctly (that’s what she said) lol 😂
Oh yeah, i've been waiting for another one of these :D
I was going to make a wisecrack about how Gaeilge sounded like someone speaking English backwards, then I remembered I speak with a Boston accent, which gives me less than zero right to make any sort of joke about how literally anyone sounds.
😄👍
God damn I wish I had any ability for picking up languages! The one about the cat is classic but the red diarrhea had me 😂
What an exotic language !
That one about dying without a priest is savage!
Just another grateful listener. That was the first time I've cried laughing in 2 years.
WOW!!!! You say you’re not fluent, but I think you are……that’s damn impressive!!! Happy St Patrick’s day to you and yours.
The Irish language is such a beautiful language I wish I had enough time to learn it fully.
Is breá liom seo! Go raibh maith agat! (Always forget the accents; still learning!)
Top vid mate. Hope I never get on ya wrong side. Have a good one 👍🇦🇺
a bit mesmerized by trying to follow your message in 2 languages. ..and always tuned in to where yer headed!
1:11 i told my grandpa i learned a curse in gaelic, and told him this and he dang near smacked me LMAO
Curse from a cat is bad enough, but wishing someone a bad trip home is frightful!
And to take the bad weather with you? Ouch 😂
Bravo!
This was a GEM!!!!!!!!!! Loved it!!!!!
I think I'm in love.
Ver cool. God bless.
Let me just say, Irish is such a beautiful language like wow , I’ve been learning different languages on and off duolingo but have always been interested in lesser mainstream languages then stumbled upon Irish.. I’m not sure if many people speak Irish though I know the population is quite low I wished more people spoke it cause it seems very interesting I guess my only downfall is if I would have enough resources to learn it and if I’ll find people online to speak it with me
I so wish I could grasp this language. But I am struggling. I have watched several videos but just trying to remember how different and difficult the letter sound in Irish compared to how English makes those same letters sound. But I love to hear people speak it. My company has an Irish challenge up for this month being St. Paddy's day in it and all. We have a sister FW Metals over there. The challenge was sent in by them to say several phrases. At first they didn't seem that hard..... but then they were. Lol Thanks for all your videos. Love them.
Good on ya Clisare , and Cheers from California !
Love this, thank you!
Love these videos. Honestly, the reason I subscribed.
Pls like and share! 🙏🏻
LOL...Wow! I always hear about Irish Curses, and most are like odd, minor inconveniences. These are like...rough...hooo boy! I will hafta watch this many times and attempt to memorize the red diarrhea one and say it to horrible customers...but if they ask what it means I'll say it means "Have a great day!" 😈 Sláinte! ~Be Blessed
❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂 thank you!!!
context aside, I wish a certain owl from a certain language app would hire you. Its easier to pick up the language grom what you say over... whoever does those translations.
They did take my first list of curses for the app years ago! 😆
Another lovely one - "Go mbeadh tochas síoraí ar do mhagairlí agus go mbeadh do lámha ró-ghearr chun iad a scrábáil", which means "May your balls be eternally itchy and your arms too short to scratch them" - the same word, "lámh", is used for "hand" and "arm".
😂😂😂
Yeah, I thought, yes, I can do this and people would not know what I’m saying 😊 Nope, I was lost quickly. Cool language though ♥️
It's interesting that you seem to be quite confident in speaking "bold things" in Irish. There is no hesitation, no missing a beat. Could be you're improving.
🤔😜😂
Thanks for the humor.
Listen, GRMA for any Irish language content. 🙏💖
1:32 onwards. The sass is coming through
gotta say, i'm gonna write some of these down
I'm not going to watch this one. I gave you a thumbs up because I love you and your work and your husband and your doggie. I want to know how to BLESS in Irish Gaelic. ❤
These are not actually swearing. One example is basically may the wind blow at the person from an inconvenient angle, for instance. They're not obscenities. It's for fun. And half of why it's funny is that some are so very gentle. You don't have to watch it but I thought I'd mention this.
I’ve never been to Ireland but I always imagined there were drunk leprechauns everywhere handing out marshmallows.
Where are you from
@@Clisare Ohio, is the marshmallow thing true?
@@ClisareMy apologies from that same continent.
Southie in Boston and Ireland are definitely two different places, js. (And that's a hard no on the marshmallows as well.) Perhaps you'd like to rewatch the video. 😂 Or just stop pulling her leg?
@@WildWoodsGirl65 lol I was obviously joking
That would be totally cool
There's also "cac an diabhail ort" which means "may the devil shit on you". The standard reply to this is "cac dáréag diabhal ort" which means "may twelve devils shit on you".
My own favourite isn't actually a curse, but it's pretty offensive at the same time - "mura bhfuil do mháthair ina striapach, abair léi mo chuid airgid a thabhairt ar ais dom", which means "if your mother is not a prostitute, tell her to give me my money back".
hahaha! Yes more!!
Ó, a Dhia! An-spéisiúil! Is maith liom é. Go raibh maith agat, a stór! Bíodh lá maith agat agus slán go fóill ☘️🇮🇪
I wonder why we haven’t got to hear. Alexander having a spell or 2 shouted his way.
Actually, please continue in your wonderful accent. 🤣 nothing makes me laugh quicker. Then another guy getting in trouble. (Alex, you keep your great sarcastic way of getting after Princess 😁)
Sure, why not learn more. When we moved to America my parents stopped speaking it after a couple years. I was too young to get anything useful from the language.
Ó, bualadh bos! Tá tú an ceann is fearr! Bhí a fhios agam é sin.💋💋💋
Okay, that was fukn intese. I was expecting some " may your tinned beans be of a low quality sweetness". You meant curses....
To Be Real , You Can Put A Curse On Me Any Time . Much Love From Texas !
So basically, Irish has some of the cleanest and nicest ways to curse someone.
Somehow I'm not surprised.
Gura maith agat Clisaire as sin a chur ar fáil dúinn agus guím gach rath ar an obair!
"May the cat eat you and may the devil eat the cat!"
What's Gaeilge for "Millie will feast on your corpse" ?
😂
Ooh! That's a good one!
"Beidh féasta corp aici" I think
I somehow feel blessed, not cursed. Gaelic sounds amazing, always loved it😊
Does Alex speak the language? If not, are you going to teach him?
He does not
I sense some new curses brewing... go n-itheann portach thú or ithe ag portach?
Ich glaube, dass du viel Deutsch sprichst und fließend sprichst
Love this video!
Damn... red diarrhea... if that's not the shittiest thing ever?! (Literally and figuratively)
Iontach maith ar fad - rinne mé dearmad ar cúpla cinn ann! Maith thú, a chara!
I LOVE the sound of Gaelic!!! It's almost sexy.
I wanted to use "Feisí" on some artwork. I want to make sure that term stands alone well. I just need something like "f- off" or "motherf-er" that is one word. Is that good?
Um, I don’t think Feisí is a real word.
@Clisare I did screenshot in the video, the part for "fucker"
As an American only Gaelic I know is “Pugh ma thoin” and not even sure I’m spelling that right. It’s supposed to mean like “kiss my arse” or something to that effect... I think 😅
Póg mo thóin - or to more than one person pógaigí mo thóin
So close! Póg mo thóin. Means “kiss my arse”
Sounds very pretty. I'd enjoy someone cursing me out.
What about our Ulster Irish is completely different
I don’t speak Ulster Irish!
@@Clisare I know your from the south
I’m irish
It is in the blood to talk shyte, because I am truly adept in insulting people. Briseadh agus brú ort 😂
Iontach!
why is she speaking in google docs format?
Yes, us baintrís have the best curses 😂
This is actually the first time I’ve ever heard someone speaking Irish Gaelic for a video and I have to say it looks absolutely nothing like how it is actually pronounced
Nope!
She has others!
@@LindaC616 I said the first time I HAVE SEEN, in ANY VIDEO, so it’s on me for missing the others
@@pacificcoastpiper3949 have a fabulous day!
Ain’t that the truth 😂
Noice
Nice. Getting into the real folk insults here. Red diarrhea to ya! 😂 Don't go perforating your intestines now haha. Still easier to understand than "Finnegan's Wake."
Please, please, please.
Think your on to something here 🤔...you just have to slow down for rock heads like me
Ich mag dich, KLARA ♡ ♥💕
Beannachtaí ón Iowa, S.A.M.!
Bhí siad sin go hiontach! Bhí mé ag gáire ós airde!
Cúpla ceann atá agamsa ná:
"Go n-ithe an cat thú agus go n-ithe an diabhal an cat"
"Fan fad fút"
"Tochais gan ingne ort"
GRMMA, Eoin.
Tá pian i mo bhollox. An t-aon Ghaeilge go bhfuil ag teastáil ó aon duine
Lower the bass in your audio
I'll try that, thank you!
Oy, @Clisare, in so many ways, so many days! We've so many we wouldn't put ourselves out to harm, but... if one fell down three flights of stairs. Putin or tRump, mere examples. Just sayin'.
