  • This is part 2 of my drive South East of Vilnius the capital of #Lithuania, to a spot on the map where the Lithuanian and Belarusian borders meet roadside in the forest. I picked it before travelling as an interesting looking area, given the Ryanair saga had just happened and I hadn't been able to get into #Belarus last year.
The location is at 54°16'29.9"N 25°33'47.2"E and about 45kms from #Vilnius and about 2.3kms before a village called Kmelninkai. This picks up as I cross through a Border Guard checkpoint about 3 kilometres from it and I got out at the spot looked at the sign don't enter the restricted area and just walked a little to look.
I assumed the vehicle tracks the border guards use are classed as part of the restricted area the sign mentions so I didn't want to push my luck walking up the track as it already looked weird a guy parked in the middle of nowhere standing next to the border fence!
I did a quick check though for cars and put my hand over the fence into Belarus, so maybe I can say my hand has visited or maybe it needs to be past the border marking post to qualify. Nice quiet area, fresh air, great sounds in the forest.
On the way back the Border Guards just did a regular stop at the checkpoint which I expected would happen; passport and vehicle hire papers, was very professional and courteous and I headed back.
You will keep hearing me say border crossing, its just my expression, the fence point is not actually a border checkpoint or immigration point. Its just where the fences meet right next to the road and there is an access gate in the fence, but that's it. Its just interesting for me, as all Europe's borders have been tested in recent years with mass migration, through the Mediterranean and Balkan routes.
    Stay safe guys.
