- Went over the Headwaters Kayak Shop in Lodi, CA to pick up a new fishing PFD (life jacket). In this video Dan shows many different PFDs and explains the features and differences.
Headwaters Kayak Shop now offers online PFD shopping.

Thanks for helping get this info out for folks. Always a pleasure to have you in the shop.
It's alway pleasure to visit the shop and seeing you Dan. Thanks for taking your time to shoot this video. 😀👍
Pfds is an important topic. Can definitely be a head-scratcher if you don't have any experience. They come in so many shapes and sizes now it's not even funny.
There are a lot to choose from. At the same time, there probably is one fit your need petfectly. Thanks for watching.
Good stuff. PFD videos should be done everyday.. wear em.. don't matter which one.
Yup doesn't do any good if it's in the boat and not on you.
Awesome and informative video brother.. a topic that doesn't get enough attention. Thanks for sharing. Stay blessed
Thanks 😁
Very cool man. Really liked your PFD from the other video. Glad you shared this. Awesome job brother. Big LIKE!!! #46👍👍
Thanks you
Nice informational video as always, however, I would have like to see how these PFDs do in a real overboard situation. I have seen many PFDs that fit good, feel great, but slip off as soon as you get in the water. I have also seen people with too small of a PFD for their body mass or just the opposite. Also, doing demos with Dummies would be a great idea because that would be as close as you could get to an unconscious body in the water after a boating accident. My point with using the dummies is to see which way the body rotates, does your face stay out of the water, etc.
I want to say if it slips off, it was not properly fitted or very low quality. I'll do a float test soon. I need to practice self rescue on my new kayak that I'm getting soon so I'll knockout two things at once.
@@MooMooOutdoors What type of kayak are you getting? Yes, self rescue is very important and needs to be practiced by all skill levels.
I'm getting a new Hobie Revo 13. Yes, I practice self rescue every time I get a new kayak or once a year.
I’m 5.10 ft and thinking to get the wilderness system tsunami 145. What size paddle would you recommend for this kayak? Thanks!
It will depend on your paddling style, high or low angle. For high angle 205-210 and for low angle 210-215 should be a good size.
This is a great video on how to choose the right PFD. Good job on this video
Thanks buddy
Can’t find specifically what PFDs match up with the height of the Old Town autopilot 120 seats.
Stohlquist Fisherman worked for me on Topwater 120. I'm pretty sure NRS Chinook would work too.
Nice intro, very informative, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
Please do one for dogs. Any with tips on kayaking with dogs would be great.
BugHugger J That would be fine! My dog Dax paddles with us all the time
@@HeadwatersKayak I am not sure what to look for when looking to kayak with dogs.
I have no experience with kayaking with a dog but my buddy takes his dog out on the kayak all the time as well. From what I've seen, there needs to be a platform where the dog can comfortably stand/sit. The dog needs to know how to remain calm on the water and you need to be able to lift the dog out of the water back on to the kayak. Like I said I have no experience but this I what I gathered by watching my buddy.
@@MooMooOutdoors Thank you. I am buying my first kayak this year, and do not want to buy something that is too small for them to be comfy.
I can't swim I want to hear whether or not these life jackets are good enough to save my life you never talked about that all I hear you talk about is brand and how nice it looks and what other features but I don't hear anything about whether or not it's going to save my life.
Every single pfd showed in the video is high quality and it will keep you afloat thus save your life. They are all US Coast Guard approved.
Please do one for the girls.
The NrS Shenook, Stohlquist Cruiser, and Kolkata Leviathan are all great options for ladies.
@@HeadwatersKayak I apologize for my terrible phrasing. Do they make a womens cut life vest?
Those mentioned above are women specific PFDs. Hope this helps.
@@MooMooOutdoors Thank you. I am learning a lot. When you talked about issues of riding up, I wondered how they get around that with the female shape.
Great job the video had great information
Thanks
Incredibly Interesting! Dan Really Helped You Alot I Would Defenetly Go With Him For My PFD👌 He Has A Dog In His Shop So Cute ! 🐶 Great Selection Moo Moo Along With The Bright Color Oh Remember To Grab a Bright Color Cap Too 👍
Blessings 🙏
Thanks for watching. Dan and his staff really offers great customer service.
@@MooMooOutdoors 👍👌
Everything looks good!👍
Ya they do. I had to go with the most comfortable one.
Great informative video guys! I like hearing the differences between the brands. 👍 👍 Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much
Please do a video for the ladies. Yes boobs get in the way of fit and comfort. Thanks
😮😮😁😁 let me see what I can do 😉
I can't hear what you're saying about what brand to buy!!!😲
The one I got is Stolhquist Fisherman but this video is not to promote one brand but to show multiple brands and models.
PFD, comfort is a key, that way you'll wear it. Great video!
Yeah. I see too many people take them off because it's uncomfortable.
Does stolquist have a simplified version of the keeper?
Check out EBB and Trekker on their website
Great video. My son has a Hobie Outback and I think I'll bring him in to get fitted. He goes out in the ocean like MooMoo and his crew. Lately he;s been too busy cause he works on several Charter boats from HMB to Bodega. Also does commercial crabbing with his cousin out of Hyde st pier SF. I'll stick to the river's and lakes as I'm not that risky. But do you have PFD for fishing river without Kayak? Just bank or wading type fishing. If so I'd like to come down to your shop. I like your knowledge in what the Kayakers need out there.
Ooops. I guess I'd be talking to MooMoo here and not the guy from headwaterskayak. You think he has what I'm looking for MooMoo? A fishing vest for rivers.I'm up in El Dorado county and want to start fishing American and Truckee.
Unfortunately, this shop is closed. You may want to try california canoe and kayak in Rancho Cordova.
@@MooMooOutdoors ok perfect . I'm in Cameron Park so 25 min. Thank you and Be safe!!
@@MooMooOutdoors one more thing. Do you have a link to GOPRO for video?
Hated to see you leave Headwaters, Dan! You knew your merchandise!! I feel like I lost a very good friend, yet I never met you personally! It is my loss that I never did, as you are a very special, kind, and quite knowledgeable individual!!! I wish you and your family well in your future plans!!
Headwaters will live on with Dan 😁
you are awesome. enjoyed this video. my girlfriend is having trouble finding a kayaking fishing jacket due to larger chest. the form tends to rid e you to her neck. and too bulky in front.
I hear a lot women are having difficulty finding a pfd that fits good.
With these high back models like the NRS and Kokotat, how high/low should you have it in front? Bottom sitting on your bellybutton?
Belly button is a good general area. However, it will depend on the model of the pfd. Follow the order as you see in the video and you'll be good.
GREAT guide to one of, if not the most important purchases of all. Like you I was contemplating before buying NRS Raku. Raku back has complete flat foams and provides bit more stable, comfort positions than OS or top-only back foam PDFs. But most of your options are great, just finding what works best for you is the key. Thanks Moo!
Yes, right fit is the key. I see many people complain about how uncomfortable their pfd is and some actually take them on the water.
Useful informations about life jackets, nice stuff. I like your channel, it is amazing and just new friend here :)
Thanks
What does PFD stand for?
Personal Floatation Device
You can tell us the truth. You flipped your kayak 100 times! I like the one you picked and the first one best!
Shhhhhhhh.... 😂 I'm loving my new PFD. So far I spent about 30 hours in it and it's been excellent.
Nice!!! Lol I probubly should wear a lifevest more hahaha barely use em since I can swim. Great video and tight lines!
Thanks for watching.
Great video. Like you said, it's nice to try different ones to see what fits your body. Lots of good info. Made me think twice about just going out and grabbing a Chinook. I'll definitely try others out. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Now do one for women, especially women who actually have luggage upstairs.
I plan to when the shop goes back in normal operation 😉
Your dog is impressed😌
haha
Love this PFD Video.. Very detailed video.. I'm in the market and have decided on the NRS Chinook for my size and style.. Thank you for doing the work that many of us needed done!!
Thanks for kind words and watching 😀
the one you bought how does it feel when you sit in your hobie seat? my current PFD has a huge pad in the back and hurts my lower back because my lower back doesn't touch the seat.
It clears the Hobie seat back rest. I'm able to rest my lower back on it.
I’m new to kayak fishing thanks for the great information much appreciated
Thanks. Kayak fishing is awesome
Hello mon ami très belle vidéo un gros like a bientôt
Your videos are super helpful! Do you have a pfd video on your women’s line?
Thanks. Unfortunately I do not have a video for women's line. I should do a video.
Thanks for this video I have found my life jacket
Happy that it was helpful ☺
This is really helpful information! Great video!!
Thanks
How do you feel about auto inflatable life jacket?
I'm not a fan of them because I heard them failing to inflate in cold water and once they inflate, you'll have to wear a big balloon around your neck rest of the day.
The detailed review was very helpful. Like the process you go through.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
informative review MooMoo. looking good too.
😁
Good job guys thanks 👍🇨🇦
Thanks for watching and commenting
Very informative!! Thanks
Thank you for watching and commenting. 😀
Terrific video!
Thanks
Great video 👍
Thanks
I can't afford to spend $50+ for a lifejacket that im just going to be using on a lake. ;/
I think it's worth the money on a long run but if you are looking for something affordable, check out Westmarine medalist. Not a fishing pfd but I find it pretty comfortable and goood quality Wait until they go on sale and you can get them under $50.
