- The Suzuki Ignis is one of the quirkiest-looking small cars on the road. The tiny dimensions make it perfect for city driving, but the tall-chunky looks give it the appearance of a plucky mini-SUV. But what's it like to live with? Is there enough space inside, and is it any good to drive? Find out in my in-depth review.

I just returned from Greece and new Ignis is already widely available at local rentals. Seems like it is currently most popular small car for driving around islands. Small turning circle, good clearance, good visibility, it is perfect for coastal roads through narrow Greek villages, and offroad driving to the beaches. It is pleasure to drive it there.
Now just in Greece, it's popular all over the Balkans. It's small, relatively practical and fun to drive in the mountain roads
I'm currently in skiathos the road to our villa is a really steep rutted windy concrete rally stage.
I own a fk8 type R in the UK and I have to say, I'm having a blast in the ignis!
Suzukis are just so great no bullshit cars. Plastics, you hear the interiour work, it will get scratched easily...but it's a car that accepts scratches, it's reliable, cheap to repair, practical, it encourages you to USE it, not to polish it.
I totally agree with you
That's a great summary. I don't need this car but I really want one because it just looks like a practical honest slice of fun
I've owned one for four months in Australia. Totally love it. Can't fault it.
its been 2 years now. any issues ??
@@jojbouk i have one for 6 months. Great car.
@@jojbouk I have one for 3 years and it's just fantastic. No problems with it. A really good car with good road presence and in my country it offered with a very stiff suspension which makes it ideal for highspeed drives and off roading only downside is the cheap quality of plastics like the front bumper locks which breaks even when a stone hits it. Otherwise this car is just fabulous and it gives me 22 kmpl of fuel economy at average. Peak fuel economy is at 26 kmpl.
How about the body..In India all Suzuki cars are Tin Cans not at all safe .
@Karthik I have Petrol Delta, Highway Performance is very good, We travelled from Kolkata To Bhutan and back, it was very good,Continuous 600km driving have no probs at all. Cruising Speed till 140-150 is fine, after that the engine will rev high making a little bit of grunt, Top Speed being 150-160 kmph.
i like this car. I dont know why... I just think its cool. Not like a 911 or a Mustang cool ... but cool in the way that this car seams fun, but doesn't take it self to seriously..... "now if you click up here........."
Well... who knew ill find a comment describing what i was feeling...
I drive one.. 😁
Ignis car
I suppose it's like a Dacia that James May loves so much?
I see these a lot and dig them, i was already a Kei car fan though.
plastic in my Swift is awfull also, but damn, I have near 100tkm and only thing that went wrong in 9 years was 1 burnt lightbulb lol
Grunf ! Not even that on mine!
Wow wonder why? Oh Yeah It's so low tech and Borring!
Rasmus Rasmussen Low tech is amazing. Nothing to go wrong. Boring? What are you doing with the swift?
difflocktwo lowtec is boring and not a way to live life, get something you can enjoy every day. Don't know? I dont own a Suzuki Swift, I would never buy a Suzuki.
Rasmus Rasmussen So go-karts and motorcycles are boring? What technology do you want in this Suzuki to make it fun? Fun to repair? Fun to pay the parts cost? Fun to have zero long term support from the manufacturer?
Ariel Atom...
My cousin in Budapest had a Suzuki Swift 1.3 that lasted 16 years and had a total of 420,000 km, pretty much all with only oil changes, belts and worn out parts changes. If you think Suzuki is a cheaply engineered car? You are waaaaayyyyy off. A positive attribute not mentioned? On rough roads, you don't have to slow down at all. The height of the car allows you to haul azz over everything. I love this thing...
Japanese and korean cars have the most fiable engines
I love Suzuki swift we own it since 7 years
The Indian Suzuki Swift is horrible in terms of safety. It doesn't offer many features of the European version so it is much more dangerous as compared to the Ignis.
420 lol
Sadly, people in the UK are more interested in gimmicks, infotainment systems and soft plastics than they are in proper engineering.....
Suzuki’s become my favourite brand. I think their price-quality ratio is the best on the market right now.
The Ignis was the sort of car the French used to make when they were good at making cars. Cheap and cheerful, full of practicality and neat design features and fun to drive in a slow and roll-y kind of way
My mother has one and it's exactly what I thought when I took place for the first time in it. There is a strong modern 2CV vibe going on. You will not be fast, but the fun factor is quite high.
should have gone to specsavers
Ordering one today. It’s the perfect runabout for the winter when the M4 is stuck on the the drive.
I'm a total petrol head. Hate even seeing crappy cars on the road but am an unashamed fan of Suzuki's quirky cars! They make impossibly fun cars to drive. And perfect cars for first time owners with great reliability. Forget your stupid Minis and Fiat 500s. If you want a little car that's an absolute workhorse, go for this. In England seeing as it's summer, you'll def want AWD to provide extra grip on wet roads! :P
lapamful a mini is one hundred times better then this crap along with even a Ford Fiesta. I would take a VW polo and be done with all the others though
Chatta290 *lol* You've got no idea of cars obviously. Minis are unreliable, very expensive to maintain and repair...no way a Mini is any good as a first car. A Fiesta and a Polo are ok of course...but all of them are more expensive and less manouverable.
Sirion well it's owned by the BMW group so yes parts are expensive but that's because they have high quality and it's harder to get third party parts like other cars. That being said I would get a car I actually like rather then an ugly piece of crap. A VW polo is reliable and the quality is superb for its class.
Of course, it can't hold a candle to Mini in terms of performance. But in what the Ignis can do, it's fun factor does rival the Mini. But really, I meant the Ignis is just as practical because of its size (parking, getting around town) and reliability. And I would definitely buy one of these instead of an Up.
Just because of a certain badge, doesn't make it a better car. And there are more important things than interior quality (for some people). Like not breaking down in the rain at night on the side of the motorway. That badge will start to lose its appeal pretty quickly after that's happened a few times...
lapamful it's not really practical for its size and it can do basic off roading which any car can really do. The ground clearance isn't needed as it probably can't go up steep inclines anyway. It's not a three seater so that's makes it a hassle to own and the fact the car is higher up is the only advantage. Any small car in the city would be good but you also want a decent engine
A Japanese brand made in India for the UK market......Long live Globalisation
Trump : hold my tariffs
No need to say made in india as few hate india
then vote the socialist workers party..will you..?..i do not thing you will you are scared that you lose coca cola and Mc donalds.
Ewww....Made in India??
In UK may Japan made
Need another back, one like the Jeep Renegade, and sunroof.
I liked your comment as you had 0 likes on it🤭
Hola vice!
Pero qué pasa chaval
No sunroofs! Please! Those just create problems!
Y para cuándo su video de un Ignis?
The car is fine. Look at the nice headlight design, the practicality, all wheel drive, economic on gas, room for 4...etc. You have to give it to Suzuki. At the end, you are buying a entry lever car.
The problem is the back, looks horrible, everything else is fine, they did a nice job with the front.
@@Lolimaster you either love the back or hate it... There is no in between
This is a brilliant little car, my husband is in the motor trade and this came in last week so I decided to drive it. WOW . Its great on road, lots of fun, massive boot very deep, comfy seats, good visibility nippy looks great. Adjustable seat every direction.
Suzuki needs to come back to the us market. There certainly is a demand for compact cars, and it's honestly more attractive than what we currently have for market here.
Pretty dangerous if u have accident with f-150 or smth like this
From mobiles to cars US always have less choices.
I LOVE THIS. The car, the video, everything!!! My dad called in last night and said that I’ll be getting a car soon since I’m turning 16 in just days. I’ve always dreamed of having an SUV but it’s ridiculous to own one when I’m driving alone all the time, so I’d have to accept the fact that I might get a small car. Now that I know there’s a freakin’ SUV like 4-5 passenger car, with SO MANY FEATURES I thought would only exist in expensive cars, I’ve never wanted anything more in my life.
I’ll now forever settle on this baby.
@@nadiahairani it is a great car! Congrats!
So which car you bought?
This Ignis is badass! Mini could learn a thing or two from Suzuki about about "mini SUV". great review!
This thing looks hideous. Pls don't compare it to the mini.
@Neel Javia nah .they are known to breakdown after sometimes way early than the suzuki
Mini? Whats Mini about the “mini” it got bigger and bigger. The true mini cars are the ignis like this , smart and fiat 500.
@Neel Javia In reality no. It depends. The Mini is comfortable but there's more to go wrong. The Suzuki is more basic and has cheap but very durable plastics so there's less to go wrong. And the Suzuki is better off-road. If both are owned with care in the same way, both should last but the Suzuki will be much cheaper to own in the long run.
@@ripmax333 The true test of a mini is if it can drive down one of those ancient narrow Italian alleys. Fiat 500 is the benchmark.
I rented this car when I was on holiday and surprisingly it’s actually a good car to drive and it’s big inside.
Just checked out my ignis 1.2 Delta AMT at the speed of 160kmph. It was feeling good. The car can move at little distance, very nice balanced car.
Why does it have adidas stripes...? Slavs will love it though
Is it BMW, Audi, Merc or even VW? Nope, slavs won't love it :)
because SLAV is life.
Luka Stipinović lada masterrace
CYKA BLYAT!!!
Are any of you even Slavs😂
I really like it. Especially the stripes from the classic predecessor. In 30 years this will be a classic.
I’ve recently sold my Suzuki Celerio. Not a dream car by any standard but it was a great little car. Three cylinder 998cc engine was economical and quite nippy when needed. Build quality was good…reliability was excellent and it was cheap to service and insure…zero road tax here in the UK 🇬🇧. So to summarise…Suzuki make good reliable cars and yes I would definitely be looking at the Ignis if I was were to need a new car.
Great looking little retro styled runabout. Reminds me of the 1970's Honda Civic
It goes very well with my Suzuki Vanvan. Basic, economic, fun to use, fun looks... The only thing I regret, there is no open roof version.
Wow, love the fuel economy of this cute little car.
Love this car. It's got a ton of character
How old are you? It has no character at all. Obviously you don't drive budget cars lol
@@CosgroveNotts You are stupid
@@CosgroveNotts hi stupid
'..yeah it's not a Landover...' you're right, it works!
I had a 15yr old alto that would've (and probably still is) kept on going, it was my first car and couldn't fault it at all. Just picked up my new ignis last week and I absolutely love it. Some materials may feel a little cheap but you get a lot more for your money i.e reliability, than you do paying more than twice as much just for a fancy Audi or BMW badge.
I agree, and also, it is very economic with the gas! More than enough!
Now i know...the 3 stripes its represent Japanesse sword set for a samurai.

The more You know.🤯
I like the look of this thing, it's different and rear end looks like an old car which isn't a bad thing , and you can get it in awd! That's awesome!
My first car ever! love driving it now for a couple of months
Why did Suzuki have to discontinue in the U.S😭 I want the Jimmy
I love it and I want it
There's a 4 seater 4WD version??
Man, Suzukis are so cool
Man I am glad that you made this because I am getting this car in a month and I loved everything I've seen about it so far but I really loved the in dept explanations and showing here :D I also absolutely freaking love that you sit up high in this car because I am small so I hate it when I can't see well in any bigger cars, this looks just perfect :D
Because of this review I bought one. And its such a joy! Love this little car with a huge personality 😍
It's definitely a huge upgrade compared to the 2006 version
I have the base model 1.2 auto. Same colour. It's brilliant. Getting 4.9l/100 running on premium (95). Really enjoy it around town and it's perfectly fine on the motorway as well.. even passed. Lamborghini yesterday hahahah
Surprised by the positive review. I expected Ignis bashing interior quality and horrible back end comments from Matt. Curious about the Swift review.
Where I live these small cars with 4x4 are gold, because the roads are narrow and the winters are snowy.
I have a Swift in the same color but man it's a piece of garbage (bought used). They usually are cheap and tough that's why I want to get the new one.
Did anyone else notice the plastic wrap on the water bottle went away when he put it in the cup holder at around 1:34
hahahha mother of observation...
probably because you'd notice the brand and it would be trouble for them
I absolutely love this car apart from the back end. Funny handling, AWD, practicality, low price, and city drivability is great, but that rear end could make the new disco look pretty.
Thats the point tho.
This is the best and most entertaining car channel in RUclips in my opinion
Mat predicted "wearing a mask" 0:23
I would buy one!
It is very, very, very funky and cool looking and for it's price, it seems quite good!
Daniel Peixoto Martins i
Dooode even in India we speak of it as tin can . Why u guys ?
@@ricky-xb9vs idiots like you spoil reputation of good cars. These are very good city driving cars with very reliable engine. Same idiots like you killed TATA nano cars without understanding purpose of the segment.
@@ricky-xb9vs I think they're getting the ones made in japan
the car is well received in indonesia
banyak downgrade nya yang versi asia. kursi belakangnya gabisa diatur dll
Kendri Nawaskoro back seat adjust aja, lainnya sama utk type atas
Yudha Bagaskara in India too!
Yudha Bagaskara yes yes it's all over Insta
Yudha Bagaskara they charge u 7,5 fkin million IDR to upgrade the head unit to this touch screen. gdi 😂
First Mat Watson review I ever watched. I don't want to guess how many I've seen since...
Great budget car and 50 mpg in a petrol car is good
buying my first car, watching reviews! This channel is so charming!
seen a few of these on NZ roads and for the price you pay I think they're great little cars. Excelent review.
When replacing my fantastic but old R.Clio (8v, 2000 mod.) , a friend suggested to take a look at Suzuki . I answered that I 'm not interested in scooters !! Finally we bought a Splash and a Celerio. Totally reliable and fun to drive cars . Worth every penny .
A car for the British Walter White.
Stephen Butler so damn true.
Stephen Butler you're bloodyhell right.
And then he will sell it for 50 bucks and lease a Hyundai
As it's a British website for British car buyers, you might have acquainted yourself with the knowledge that we use Pound Sterling in the UK not 'bucks'. Clear now ?
roconnor01 Looks like you missed the joke.
I just waited about a month and finally got it about 7 hours ago. I have a second hand White with Blue Stripes Suzuki Ignis MZ Hybrid Automatic CVT (Manual mode paddle shift included) with 43,000km mileage and I think it’s great. I wanted to go with a full on Manual car but I didn’t like the look of those cars so I went with Ignis. The departure and pause was smooth. The handle is a little heavy which I like because it makes it feel like a sports car. The sound when I accelerate is nice. It warns me when the car in front of me has departed so that’s nice. It also has lane assist and a crash preventer. I’m gonna test it out more this month to see if I find anything. By the way, I’m gonna need a lot of practice because It’s been a month since I got my license and I just drove once. I also gonna remember the roads because I’m gonna start working on April. I’m lucky my work is only about a 15-20 minute drive.
P.S.
“Don’t buy a NISSAN CVT vehicle” my father said.
P.S.
My car is made in Japan, so I don’t know if the quality or features would be the same as in other countries.
well this car is great for daily office jobs in the city coz of easy parking
Krishna Gaurav Yup :)
Only a lunatic would take a car into a British city. London is almost out of bounds now.
Best combination in my opinion is a mini suv. Best of both worlds.
Wow Suzuki actually done well with this
Phoenix Intergrale 🤣
Continued Wisdom well the fact is that all Suzuki cars are shit. So no they did not.
Rasmus Rasmussen hurr durr they are all shit, never mind fact or reason, Suzuki is shit hurr durr
obb322 did i hurt your bleeding Suzuki hart ? 😂
i drive a suzuki ignis 2003 model, and reached 200,000 km last week. i've had ZERO problems with the car for 16 years only changed small stuff lol
I like it, standout funky little car
I work for a multi franchise retailer, we are suzuki, Honda and Isuzu (pickups) was using a top spec pickup as a company car and demonstrator until someone t-boned the truck while it was parked up. Anyhow now using an ignis as a punishment however, the ignis is a lively little car, it’s tall body, short wheelbase and narrow wheel track make it quite roly-poly in corners which is great fun. And to get it to move anywhere you have to be toward the top of the Rev band and it is just a happy little scamp. Sure the materials are cheap but even the absolute top spec with sat nav, DAB, CarPlay? 4 wheel drive, climate control, cruise control/speed limiter, is less than £20k. It’s a happy little bundle of cheap fun motoring. There’s no power so to get it going you have to kick it’s teeth in, the new hybrids feel lightly turbocharged as the electric motor kicks in at about 2k rpm and there’s a gentle waft.
On tighter corners it can cock one or even two wheels, if that’s the case just pray. That becomes even more common if you’re reversing quickly for whatever reason.
Cheap to buy, cheap to insure, great on fuel, fun to drive albeit a different type of fun than sports cars and as Matt says, it’s funny.
That's enough. I'm done. This is officially now my favourite Suzuki.
We do get the spare tire back there in India though I think. Oh and we don't get an aftermarket infotainment :)
My car will delivered tomorrow, can't wait to drive it
The rear looks like a condescending aunt that never approves of anything and is always disgusted.
Finally an accurate description of the back 😄
Hahaha
Yeah man....front is well executed modern classic design.
Rear is bad executed early japanesse hatchback classic design in a real form. No wonder the potential buyers is confused.
And yet,I have One in my garage.
The four wheel drive version of the ignis (All grip) is not perniment all wheel drive. What it does is when the front wheels loose grip the back wheels help the car to go out if it ever gets stuck.
Nice one Suzuki, Great job being different...
I have a 2018 Ignis, had it from new and absolutely love it, only niggle is tyre pressure warning light comes on when the temperature drops below zero, easily sorted but annoying
I like the rear and I like the colour.
So there 🤪
I love Suzki cars. My 1.2l daily Swift is lots of fun, 60k miles on the clock, not a single thing wrong and it's driven basically flat out all the time. Shame the new ones are not N/A anymore, because even the little 1.2 loves getting revved all the way to the redline.
Update
It would be nice, if this would come with the turbo charger.
I got one. It’s great. But I think it goes around corners rather well... doesn’t wobble all over the pace as in this video. But mine is a second gen
I wished you and doug did review together in the new top gear
perfect for city goers or people just starting out.
It looks like a Nissan kicks and a Volvo XC40 were squashed together in gta 5
4:54 - My eyes perked up seeing its a manual and that knob looks cool too.
Suzuki's new washing machine! 😂😂😂
Really appreciate your reviews. Are u going to review or have reviewed i10 nios??
I liked the Suzuki Jimny look,if only it had a modern interior.
I wonder if they will ever release a fully electric version of this. It would be a wonderful small EV.
Mat Watson is the best. But would be better of he replied to his Insta messages 😂😂👍🏻
Ib Bu and if he stripped naked
I wish we had the Suzuki Ignis in the US. As someone who lives in the city and travels frequently to mountains in winter this would be a good fit.
Pity about the rear
I've just bought a 18year old ignis with 90000 miles on the clock it drives well although the gear box is a bit noisy its good on fuel i would prefer the 5 door instead of the 3 door but it does the job
6:39 - only 9 degrees? when was this filmed?!
Oli Hudson Yeah I noticed the temperature before in other videos. They replied to me when I said about it. I think they are maybe filmed a few months before upload.
Philip Scott.. that slightly sucks
Mini cooper founder name is Sir Alec issigonis. Is name ignis related to Issigonis? But the purpose he made mini is to create cheap small good gasoline cunsumption car. Same with my ignis. I use this ignis in indonesia petrol tipe since 2018 that use AGS matic transmition that actualy manual transmition with computer so has only two pedal.
Very valueble money car with price same as the cheapest toyota or daihatsu car in indonesia we get the Nexa car branded from suzuki in india. Imported to indonesia. Very top in gasoline consumption in indonesia 17 km/ L in trafic jam, quiet car , good looking exterior and nice interior design, we get extrem Air conditioner panel, LCD monitor music player JVC.
I like using AGS transmition we can use manual that can fast aceleration in city and use automatic mode in highway.
In maintanance fee and oil is 1/ 3 daihatsu or toyota. Body plat ignis is so thick, more thick than the highest price Toyota car Fortuner SUV. Ground clearence is high so match with the majority bad road in my country. Before i use Daihatsu Sirion hathback low ground clearance that often body repair because road condition.
never clicked on a video so fast😱
Jay Rasodha why?
Kitsune Ken just bad taste i think
No because Matt's video's are as addicting as Doug DeMuros.
I kind of miss when Matt would review small basic cars with enthusiasm. Unless there are less small cars produced nowadays to review
"looks like it is wearing a mask" Suzuki predicted covid
IGNIS HAS ODD REAR LOOK BUT GREAT GROUND CLEARANCE (180MM). IF THEY FIX
STAPNEY ON THE REAR DOOR IT WILL GIVE A GREAT LOOK LIKE MINI SUV.
Can we see more practical cars.... hondas/Mazdas that people actually want lol.
I own it, I like it: short, tall, reliable and economical, a perfect city car and fun to drive.
opinions...blah blah blah....we purchaced 1 and love it !!!
"opinions...blah blah blah we purchased 1 and love it" That is an opinion. Like me saying i don't like the iPhone X, but someone else does, that is a difference in opinion.
They could have added 3 cheap things that would've made the car so much better:
1) A screen that covers the entire holding trim (at least for the top spec cars)
2) An adjustable boot floor for a flat loading area
3) Depth adjustment for the steering wheel (though I think for the most part the up-down positioning is alright)
I doubt that those additions would have broken their development budget/final retail price by much...
if the back was nicer.....
We've got a 2014 Alto and it's brilliant.
very nice
Best car i've ever had..take no notice of this guys review
A 2016 car yet the title is for a 2018 car, accuracy at its finest
They change the titles every year providing the car is still available that year. This car may be a 2016 but the car is still available in 2018 and it is exactly the same. Example, the old fiesta video now says 2013-2017 on it
It looks rather nice, especially when considering the price. Does it have a spare wheel though?
On a similar topic, not many tire manufacturers for the 16" wheel size (175/60R16) - especially for winter tires..
I own this car, and negative mentioned here are useless...
👍👍
If it wasnt for the Hideous rear lights - probably the best looking car of all time!
How many t-shirts were you wearing on top of each other during the filming of this video?
Hi Paul, I am 6ft1 and I test drove it yesterday and with the seat back as far as it would go I could stretch my legs out fully, plus there is plenty headroom and I even sat in the back with the front seat right back and still had room for my knees, will be ordering a used ignus adventure tommorow in black, oh by the way on the computer it was registering 63mpg.
I think it looks pretty cool. Small car with an suv like ride.
*Front and Dashboard is beautiful but the Back is so ugly !!*
👍
I live in New Zealand and I own a 1978 Suzuki SC100 CX-G (Wizz Kid). I have seen the Ignus on the road, and no someone who owns one. I was unaware there is a 4 wheel drive version, which is likely the model I would go for where I buying one? I would undoubtedly buy a manuel version of whatever model I chose, as Suzuki fits a CVT transmission to their "Auto" model cars, which are not as rodust as they could be?
