I don't think I've ever seen a Gameboy game look so much like a Tiger Electronics game as Zoids does. Even the Game & Watch collections seem more polished and powerful.
Just watched this series all the way through - it's fantastic, this is such fascinating, well-researched history into games I've never at all heard of (and even interesting stuff about games I own, like the Super Game Boy mode in Space Invaders). Keep up the great work!
This was a great episode. I absolutely love the work you're doing Parish. Zoids seems like the platonic ideal of the Game Boy game. Simple licensed trash you played because you had no other choice. My nostalgia addled brain pines for forgotten games like these. What I'm trying to say is I can't wait until you get to the Simpsons Game Boy titles.
I was just about to make the same comment. Totally forgotten childhood toy. I remember the heads being a like a little ship that opened up and had a tiny pilot inside. Pretty sure I played with those more than the dinosaur part.
Back when BlameTheControlPad.com was up, I covered Zoids in a GameBoy shooters article. I'm glad someone else loves the Gameboy enough to plow through the Zoids pain too.
Oh I posted this too early. But what about other TOSE developed games? Sometimes they credit their company on the games but not using real names for the staff. I once had a colleague who worked on the GBA FF ports, Harvest Moon and the PS2 Super Monkey Ball and he showed the credits to me and how he 'masquerade' himself. Other games he talked about has no credits though.
I guess Ultraman Club was designed for people who can only play by rolling their face over the controls, since no amount of more deliberate play seems to improve your chances in any way.
While you are probably objectively correct about Takara being lower quality than Bandai (especially in 1990), nothing furrows my brow quite like the Banpresto logo. It's just an automatic response to decades of piss-poor stimuli.
Oh... oh noooo... I'm a bit nostalgic for Zoids but man that is a terrible way to use the franchise. The later RPGs were ok but Zoids has never been transfered well to videogames. And that's sad since it would obviously make a good Strategy RPG in the vein of Fire Emblem or Advanced Wars. I don't understand who is at game companies making these terrible decisions or why.
Zoids has a messy and janky 3D combat game for gamecube called Battle Legends, and sadly I think that's the best take the series has ever had - at least of the games released in the US. It's got tons of problems but unlike every other Zoids game i've ever played its decently fun and feels like there was some actual love put into it. At least that one is charming?
I beg to differ, the Ultraman Fighting Evolution series is quite enjoyable, and faithful to the source material... but when it comes to GB releases... yes, there's no good one, I'm afraid
As soon as i heard you can play as another set of characters, i knew nothing would change. But anyways, Zoids Densetsu actually really sucks. Zoids Densetsu has at the very least ONE thing going for it. Yeah you heard me, ONE thing. It's not a puzzle game. Even then it's still terrible.
Bleach DS and JUS are incredible games. I convinced all of my friends to import all 4 titles and it was some of the best multiplayer ever. Man I pine for some treasure + region free 2D handheld + non3d jump brawlers... Had it so good back on DS =(
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon on the Mega Drive is a pretty good Anime License game, it's a beat em up and it's a huge improvement over the terrible Super Famicom game. The only thing that really brings it down is that it for some reason lacks 2 player which is odd because the previous 2 Sailor Moon beat em ups had that feature, but it's still a fantastic game.

+poparena Ouch, ice cold.
The border you used for Zoids is hilarious, imagine folks going to a theatre to watch that.
It's tough discussing these bad games in-depth but you do an amazing job. Another great video.

Zoids! Always sharing the pages of catalogues with Transformers, stopping me from saying "Look how cool this stuff is!" Since 1985.
This games so bad I’m watching this video like, “wow look at those cats.”
A game that is completely RNG based. Lots of prayers were made to RNGesus to beat this, for sure.
Thanks Jeremy for going thru all this.
Well I'm glad I watched this before getting the game.
Wish I had just got it off ebay thankfully it was only a dollar

The cats border is so perfect for this game.
The animations are so slow in the Ultraman game that they actually cause me physical pain.
I both love and hate the way Lupin runs so much.
Cant wait for the next episode i love me some Catrap.
I can't believe they put Zoid Densetsu on the Japanese 3DS virtual console, like who would buy that?!
Why wouldn't they release the Hamtaro games instead? Because they are actually good!
I had some Zoids toys growing up. Totally forgot about them until I saw this video.

Best opening line yet!

Audio is *so* out of sync on that Pokemon clip.
Hi Jeremy,
How do you know TOSE had a hand in the development of a game if they don't credit themselves in the game?
Oh I posted this too early. But what about other TOSE developed games?

Sites like the GDRI do things like comparing code to known titles, or determining that games share similar audio drivers, etc.
How to enjoy without understanding japanese? Is that possible? I like rpg and tokusatsu, but I do not know if I should try this one.
I wouldn't bother. It's not good.
I barely remember watching Zoids as a kid and even then knew it was a bad knockoff of mech games like Transformers and Gundam Wing
I have ultraman for the SNES it's alright to play for a laugh with a friend

Ultraman club and zoids two games did not work out.
New subscriber here.
There's no such thing as a good Ultraman game.

I think I just watch the episodes now for the hilarious intros.
Still a long way to go until Super Robot Wars 1, which is supposedly still mediocre.
I know you pronounce anime right but it still doesn't sound right. And I actually wonder if there is any good license anime game...
+jlc992 the Bleach games for the DS come to mind, they're great. I also quite like Jump Ultimate Allstars.

The good old days indeed, miss Treasure.
RIP

quality intro
thumbs up
good
HI. How do you play that. I have that (was a freebie when I bought a Game Boy).
Thank you. God bless, Proverbs 31
You can find it on eBay probably
Thanks. It's like Pokemon but less complex. It's nice that the characters are from Ultraman.
