Using Traditional Dirt Scoops

  • Before mechanized equipment, much of the digging for seller holes, ponds, and other items was done by teams of oxen, horses or single animals pulling a scoop. In April of 2024 several of us brought some antique scoops to Eastern Connecticut to dig out a wash and fill in some ruts and a cornfield.

    Were the scoops always flat or are there variations with other shapes or profiles? I am intrigued. This looks like a good way to dig ditches or cut in trails.

      All of the ones that I’ve seen are flat or slightly concave bottoms. I would imagine there’s some other types, but that’s what I am used to. They work extremely well, better than people would think.
