Pollinators are animals (generally insect, but can be mammalian or avian) that fertilize plants. This fertilization results in the formation of seeds and fruit. These incredibly hard working animals help pollinate nearly 75% of our crops and over 75% of our flowering plants. Often we may not notice the hummingbirds, bats, bees, beetles, butterflies, and flies that carry pollen from one plant to another as they collect nectar. Yet without them, wildlife would have fewer nutritious berries and seeds, and we would miss many fruits, vegetables, and nuts, like blueberries, squash, and almonds . . . not to mention chocolate and coffee…all of which depend on pollinators. If we did not have these little assembly lines the Georgia we live in would be as arid as the vast Gobi Desert.
“What can we do about it?” There are some things you can do to help. Firstly, you could plant a pollinator garden for wild pollinators. Secondly you can provide nesting sites for bees or other pollinators. Lastly you can feed hummingbirds and butterflies at your own home, but make sure you know how to properly feed them.
