Fun fact: Finnish military still uses the lanterns shown at 2:44 as interior lighting in tents. They're honestly pretty handy, especially in camping environments where you don't have electricity and can do without very bright lighting.
Thanks for the good video!
Thanks. Yes, they are pretty popular here in the states for camping, too.
The “you light up my life moment”... 😆 And, you know what? I learned something today! Sitting here sipping my morning cup and along comes the info about the “Moon Tower”. Who knew? (Well, I mean, besides you!).
Thanks Santee!! - 🤠 Jed
First time for me 2 Hi Jed 🍻🤠
Another great vid to wake up to on a Saturday morning! As usual, I learned a lot. At first, I thought it said Frontier Lightning. LOL
HA! Well, thank ya. That would be a shocking topic.
That’s what I thought it said too. Need more coffee. ☕️ 🤠
@@JEDiTV Maybe it does...I made the thumbnail in the dark.

@@timberwolf5883 OK, I checked. Did it right. Y'all just need more coffee.
I found your channel via Red Dead 2, and I’m really glad I did. You guys are hilarious. Red Dead 2 and your channel has really sparked an interest in learning more about the old west. Thank you guys for making such amazing content.
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great video Santee. Seems like every monsoon we get to play 19th century lighting at least once.
Great video. Lamps and lighting are intetesting as humans need them. It is amazing how dim interior lighting was.
They must have all gone blind.
You're making awesome videos keep up the good work
Thanks!
I just love how you can make such an entertaining video about a simple subject like lighting. Great work once again Santee!
Honestly, it was about to be just oil lamps...but there just isn't enough for me to talk at length about.

This information helps alot in understandin how much lighting exist/ was available in the old west
You're welcome.
I received Red Dead 2 as a Christmas present from the kids and I'm loving it. It's great to see that Rockstar have done a decent amount of research into the times and put what they can into the game. I'm so glad to have found your channel to fill in the blanks on what life was like back then, I'm from England so this isn't a subject that we were ever taught about. So thanks for the education partners!!!

@@ArizonaGhostriders thanks for the information. I've even seen this place on Red Dwarf (a sci fi comedy show) When I was a kid in the Cub Scouts, I used to love the western recreations we used to visit so I'm gonna have to give this place a visit (it's not even that far from me!) I just watched your episode that featured the Scottish western town (bit too far to visit though) and I'm binge watching all of your vids to completely immerse myself in the cowboy life. You've got a truly wonderful channel guys!!!

I keep an oil lamp right by my gun bench both for emergency lighting and to "smoke up" any parts I may need to fit together. You do a fantastic job of educating and entertaining!
Thank you very much.
Love the editing in the videos
Thank you!
Truly appreciate this channel, Santee & the fellas, you do an excellent job, especially the dang hilarious old photo animations like I always say they’ve got that monty python vibe

Hey Santee, great episode!
I used to use an oil table lamp in the hunting cabin. It wasn’t bright but it kept ya from tripping over the furniture!
One the chores that kids had in the old days was cleaning the soot from the glass globes.

Great history there, Dan! Thanks for watching.

Absolutely illuminating! It certainly brought many things to light. I enjoyed the bright bunch around the table too. Ok....that's enough
Greetings from Ireland. Great video. Our house was one of the first in our area to be built already wired for electricity in 1964. A neighbour built his house 10 years earlier in 1954, it was piped for gas lights.
Nice info and history, Bernard!
My house was originally built before central heating and electricity. It has the remains of three chimneys and was piped for gas light. Over the decades I was told by different professionals my gas light pipes are a dead system with only some left over gas in the lines. I found out otherwise around a decade and a half ago.
A local handyman was working on a ceiling fan at a 2nd floor bedroom had uncapped the pipe igniting the gas. I work at night and work up to the screaming from my bedroom at the 3rd floor. I went down stairs in a daze and seen the contractor waving his hat at the flames yelling for help. I looking at a long flame jet and realized that it is under pressure from a live line and not left over gas from a dead line. I had installed fire extinguishers at every hallway floor, the kitchen, basement and such. In a mental daze rather than grabbing the 2nd floor hallway extinguisher that was a few feet away I retrieved the kitchen extinguisher on the 1st floor. After reading the instructions on how to use the extinguisher I had turned out the fire.
After capping the gas line and inspecting the system we determine it is live and the gas light pipe are used for the kitchen gas range and basement gas water heater. Contractors in their mistake over the ages have used the so called dead gas line as an electrical ground and anchor points for electric lighting. Me and the handyman was busy for the next few days correcting the dangerous mistakes.

For us being without electricity for any length of time is difficult but in those days minimal lighting was a norm. Great video my friend 👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊😉😉😉😉

Santee, you are the best and shedding light on the old west. Your videos are always entertaining and educational.
Thank you so much, Big Al!
Thanks Santee ! Very illuminating , you really shed some light on the subject this time . You're an enlightened individual for sure . Few people making videos about the Old West can hold a candle to you . Maybe you've lit a fire under some hind ends . I don't want to start any kind of flame war , but I think you're the greatest torchbearer of western lore on RUclips. I hope your channel shines for many moons and doesn't become a candle in the wind or just another flash in the pan . Your videos are a beacon in the night for those who wish to see the light about western life .

Well done 👍 again Santee and team
This helps me understand why in the western movies I watched
as a kid in the early 60’s one lamp could light up a whole room!
(Yeah , I know a studio stage with lighting,but hey, I was 10 what did I know?)
See you down the trail !🤠
Thanks.
the Aladdin lamps were equivalent to about a 60 Watt bulb, which is fairly bright especially once your eyes adjust
I do believe this is my favorite RUclips channel. Hmmm. Yup.

Good video santee. I was thinking a video on Pinkertons would be timely since Pinkerton is now suing Rockstar over negative portrayal. Would be good for you to show us how they were.
So I understand.
It would be a ridiculous to sue them for portraying them as they were over 100 years ago

We always used kerosene lanterns while coon hunting, instead of brighter gas lanterns, because the softer kerosene light helped preserve night vision. My best memories of my Dad was him holding a kerosene lantern at 1 am in a woods or cornfield. Thanks for reminding me! I do a lot of shopping at the local Amish harness & fabric stores, where gas lighting is still used. It makes for rather a cozy atmosphere. ...Well, when it's not the heat of summer. ':P Thanks for the video guys! :)

I was born in 85 but very rural WV and where my family farm is we didnt have access to electricity until the late 90s. When we finally got access it was great no more lanterns. The house was built by my great how ever many Grandpa is 1848 so we had to wire it. One blasted outlet per room. You could have a lamp and something else and that was it. Still today my kids tell me I'm crazy because I never have lights burning in the house. Way to bright.
Sometimes I wish I could subscribe multiple times to this channel... Loving the content! Keep it up! :)
Wow, thanks!
1:20 what the hells a lightbulb 😂 that had me dying

Me too!
On March 31,1880 Wabash, Indiana became the first electrically lit city in the world. Four 3000 candlepower carbon-arc lamps were placed on the courthouse and were used to illuminate the town. The lamps were in use until 1888. I know. It's Hoosier History, but it fits!
Well, I was born in Lafayette!
Those Arc Lights were all manufactured in Fort Wayne, I believe.
I knew there was something I liked about you Santee! A fellow Hoosier just like Johnny Ringo. I live in the little gas boom town of Albany, IN about 10 miles from Muncie and I believe you're right about those lights being made in Ft. Wayne.
@@hacksaw434 Double checked and yes, Fort Wayne Electric made 'em. My father was mayor of South Bend in the early 1950's. Family was in Indiana going back to the early 1800's!

Hello Santee ! What about glass in the Old West ? From window panes , eyeglasses , telescopes , stained glass windows in churches , rifle scopes. , what forms of glass products were available to people in the 19th century American frontier ?
Good one! Yes, that definitely goes on the list. Thanks.
What kind of lights was used in stage lighting in theaters at the time? Was it limelight that gave off that smoke on old stage lights?
Just a little more tech:
The chimney also provided draft upwards (as the flame burned, the air heats and then flows upward, drawing in fresh air from below), which make the flame burn hotter, brighter and whiter (but seldom actually white) without burning more oil.
They only helped distribute the light if they were frosted. Plus, they needed to be cleaned regularly, of they would turn black from carbon deposits from the soot from the burning oil, which nobody liked doing because the soot (called 'carbon black', and is so black it's still used in black ink today) sticks to everything.
Wild West Tech!
