You got to love when the answer to a "yes" or "no" question is "depepends" lol (creates a very interesting thought process and reminder that not everything is just two sides, but there's a lot in the middle)
My wife is an adoptee. Connie has been a big help to me with her videos and advice. I am very appreciative of it. I've determined the mother line and who I believe is the mother. We have also done the same with the father line. In fact, for the first time, my wife spoke to her biological father after I reached out a couple of months ago. They spent almost 2 hours on the phone. I can tell you the concerns expressed about family relationship with half-siblings and family dynamics is real. We are just now on both sides trying to wrap heads around it.
"Go further faster"! - I've heard that saying a few times on TV here in the UK lately. Once in the Houses of Parliament, then on a Virgin Airline advert and yesterday from a political journaist. So Connie, people must have been watchng you. More power to you.
Love Judy Russell! Good copyright information. [And super small correction: The Profit by Kahlil Gibran (1923) and Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam (translated into English by Edward Fitzgerald in 1859)]
my grandfather was adopted in 1894 in Minnesota. In 1983 I requested a copy of his adoption record. I had to get a court order because it was less than 100 years since the adoption. North Dakota on the other, does not release adoption records period, no matter how old they are.
Have you made a video instructing people how to properly share photos from their leafy hints? My own photos from years ago are now waving at me from other members' public trees, lol. Glad to share them hoping that I can follow where they go in order to find distant cousins.
No but... Why are you seeing your own photos and or documents hinting at you on Ancestry? Two things I suspect are contributing to this. 1) People download it and then reupload it. 2) Syncing software they are using is causing the same as #1 above. I think when they are syncing their software to Ancestry, it is technically downloading to their computer, then reuploading it to their online tree during the next sync. Then the algorithm sees it as a new upload and delivers it as a hint to others searching for the same data set (your ancestors data). I don't know this for a fact, but I believe it to be a possibility.
@@GenealogyTV The link back to me is broken when they upload/re-load my photos from hints rather than saving directly from my tree. Mistakes are made and others copy the mistake over to their tree. Is there any way to try to correct this? When I politely comment or message some folks, they tell me all their info is private and they got the photo from somebody else. Very frustrating. Makes me want to give up.
I came here to figure out how to add the new name of a cousin. There is a paper trail, thank goodness. He was born in Dec 1920. And a newspaper article that lists the name change and adoption in Sep 1921. I just added a Also Known As under the facts portion.
Great info Connie, I'm so pleased I joined your channel and get the Early Releases. I'd love to be able to do genealogy as a living, any advice on how to start with that would be great. I live in Australia, but my heritage is all Scotland and Ireland. Love to hear your thoughts
Wonderful! I learned by studying just about every document in the Board for Certification of Genealogist website. If you study all of the suggested material as if you were going to certification, you'll learn a lot. Also there are tons of webinars out there. There are some University programs at BYU and I think GRIP has one.
Connie, excellent video...finally got to finish watching. First of all I understand the adoption aspect considering my Father was adopted by my Grandfather shortly after my Grandmother married my Grandfather. This aspect was learned by us kids or should say by my little brother by accident when he listened in on a phone conversation between my Father and my Grandmother. Needless to say my Dad found out when he was grown and married with children. Ok now to my question is my Grandmother lied on the adoption papers of which I have seen because the surname is wrong and I know this by having my brother do a Y DNA test in order to get the correct surname due two surnames floated around for a very long time as well. Well needless to say also I found 4 2nd Cousin matches and 4 3rd Cousin matches off the correct Surname. I unfortunately have not found a birth certificate for my dad and he was born in the state of Kansas just as I was too. I have eliminated all my Biological Grandfather's Brothers just to ensure I had the right man and I do so question becomes how would I find my Dad's Birth Certificate and what would be the chances that the real surname will be on it it and not the fake surname? My Grandmother lied about this for long time so whose to say this when and if I do that it won't be a lie too?
You can try to write to the county where the birth occurred explaining that you are the next of kin. More than likely those records are sealed by court order... so you may need to get a court order to make them available. More than likely (I'm not a lawyer) you will need to prove that all parties are deceased. This is a challenge I realize. I might be easier to do traditional descendance research using the DNA matches you found.
Are there people who volunteer to assist in getting old adoption records “unsealed”? We found a 1st cousin to my dad thru 23&Me. Adopted in Baltimore in 1952. All parents bio & adoptive are deceased. So, no harm to anyone. I’ve done everything conceivable to assist our relative and keep getting the run around. Just need to know how to break through and get correct information. Both bio families are trying to help. We just can’t come up with people on either side with certainty. Any guidance would be appreciated! Thank you!
Great video. As an aside, my adoptive aunt and adoptive sister are very rich and very litigious, they are actually horrible people so this makes me think I need to be careful with this. Thank you.
What if there is a record of intent to marry and a bond was paid but no record of marriage has been found? Does this mean they were not married? They are shown living together in census records and she is mentioned as his wife in his will.
If she was mentioned in his wife in his will that is very strong evidence. Are you sure the bond was paid? The money mentioned in a bond is a promise to pay of the condition of the bond was not met. The bond itself is also evidence of the marriage. If the will was probated then I would say (barring any other evidence) that the marriage took place.
Newspapers. That's where I would start. Also good old fashioned Google. I can't believe I'm saying Google is old fashioned LOL... but many forget to just Google it. Search for newspapers... Start with FS Wiki www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/United_States_Newspapers to find what papers for what time period is available. My favs... They all have different newspapers. Newspapers.com (paid, part of Ancestry) GenealogyBank.com (paid) ChroniclingAmerica.loc.gov (free) State Archives where you are searching! (free) Local County Library History Rooms! (usually free)
I have someone who has a DNA match but is adopted. He is a 1st cousin 3 times removed. I'm not sure how to help him. Most of my Ancestry is from Maine but he was adopted in Florida. Any help will be great.
You might consider my virtual coaching service. We jump on a Zoom call for an hour, we can share computer screens, and work on your family history together. Go here for more information. genealogytv.org/coaching-options/
My Grandfather was considered an illegitimate birth from 1896 in Streator, Illinois. Is there a time limit on this type of birth notice? We cannot find any records from Illinois. We do know the name of the mother, and my grandfather took the fathers name. We are lost! Any advice would be helpful.
I have several suggestions/links I found on FamilySearch regarding adoptions, court records, probate, and or school records. Any of these might provide help depending on your situation: Adoptions in Illinois www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Illinois_Adoption_Research, Illinois Court Records www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Illinois_Court_Records, Illinois Probate (if the parents died, on the off chance he might be listed) www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Illinois_Probate_Records, and a long shot school records, www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Illinois_School_Records

So true! Then again, everything in the law has caveats (a.k.a. It Depends).

I am an adoptee, also. Good for you for doing that with her. It is VERY hard to do alone. Good on you.
Thanks Matt for sharing. Adoption is always a sensitive issue.

Will forever be thankful for Judy and her knowledge!!! She is a gem!!!

The first real "play by play" overview of records I've heard anywhere. thank you Connie and thank you Judy!
Thank you! Judy is awesome in this way.
Thanks for the great questions you asked Judy and her wonderful answers/explanations
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Kathleen for your continued support!
youre awesome. I subbed just due to the work ethic. love your stuff
Thanks!

Consider using an alternate name fact for any name that might be searchable. AKA does not search for hints.
Fascinating. Thankyou for all the info. It's great 😁
Thanks!
Thank you for the wonderful tips.
You are so welcome!
What about copies of vital records that you have to pay for? Are we allowed to upload for others to use?

@@xochxrry6857 sadly that has not provided any matches.
