Florian Schneider died in 2020. He founded Kraftwerk together with Ralf Hütter.
This song I think can be interpreted in two ways. Either literally as a song about robots, or as a song about people who are oppressed by the government or the political system and who just have to work and obey ("We are programmed just to do anything you want us to").

When I first heard that this song was recorded in 1978, I was blown away!
It's the machine marching of the drum machine kick drum, the incredible analogue bass line and the melodies that make this song unique..Kraftwerk are unique and the sounds they made influence absolutely everybody In electronic music...today...yesterday and tomorrow.
    R..I.P Florian!
I was honoured to see Kraftwerk play live in 1991 at the Edinburgh Playhouse.
Believe me, the sound just rippled through your very being.
    Fantastic !

Kraftwerk continue to perform live, often performing at festivals with a 3D visuals, glasses supplied to the crowd for the full viewing experience. Original member and driving force Ralf Hutter is still there. Quite an experience to see them live.

Thank you 2 for doing this too, they were so original and a bit weird (in a good way) back in the days - they weren't alone in that 😊👋

I saw them in Norwich (UK) in the 90s, they opened with this but replaced themselves with proper robots! Class act, the originals and the best!

Kraftwerk 1 (1970) and 2 (1972) later a double album set was more experimental electronic music. Their 3d album Ralf und (and) Florian (1973) was a bit more ambient which that is one of my favorite albums by Kraftwerk. Their 4th album (1975) Autobahn was the album that put them on the map of electronic music. Not just in Canada and Europe, but here in the US as well. You can watch Kraftwerk live in concert on RUclips around 1970 or 1971. I Think it's called Rockpalast. Something like that.

Great that you reacted to Kraftwerk 😄
I enjoy many different styles of music and so also Kraftwerk. Together with Klaus Schulze pioneers in the electronic music from the late 60's/ early 70's.
Kraftwerk's live album (on DVD or BD) Minimum Maximum is something I still put on the projector with a nice surround set (it's so well mixed).
Radioactivity or Music Non Stop are some highlights on that album for me.

Listening to them in the 80's was great and although I am a metal head i do like some electronic music. This is my favourite from them. I also used to listen to a group called Yellow Magic Orchestra, you might like them Wolfman. Rydeen Technopolis and Firecracker/Theme from space invaders are my favourites.

I have to admit, that it's a little stange for me hearing Kraftwerk with english lyrics...Anyway, you're right, they were ahead of their time when they decided to make electronic music in their minimalistc style. This was the late 70s, and this kind of music became popular in the 80s and finally lead to techno in the 90s, so they were really pioneers. Fun fact: they started as a rock band playing a style called "Krautrock", an experimental style of rock music which german bands created to emancipate themselves from the english and american rock music.
