When Fiona starts to scratch on the chair, I say loudly, "Hey! Scratching post, please!" It usually works. And when she does use the scratching post, I praise her.
I've learned to hiss and guttural growl pretty accurately. This makes my cats aware that I'm not happy with a behavior and stops them with a look of surprise. " Wow! he's upset lets stop what were doing."Works every time.

did you teach the cat what NO actually means or are you just using the word, its how youre using itand how you say it not what you say, with confidence in a calm and asseritve (assertive not aggressive) tone, if they dont react, redirect them calmly and kindly to the thing you want them to do and then praise them. imagine a chinese person yelling at you inchinese you too would look at the person like they are insane, thats what the cat sees you like likely

1:31 I've had many cats for almost 50 years now, and THIS point can almost not be STRESSED enough, reprimanding bad behaviour in the MOMENT is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL. A RAISED "NO" voice is all that is needed as you catch them in the act, because even 1 minutes after the fact, and your cat will see your "discipline" as abuse!.
It's also very IMPORTANT to behave normally & lovingly with your cat when they approach you after having been reprimanded, even if it is 5 minutes afterward, as it helps them understand that your "NO" is aimed at the "wrong behaviour", but does not affect the unconditional love bond you have with them.

I tried to scold my cat.
I was quickly informed if I didn't like the way things were done here, I was welcome to leave. While it's true, many cats in the country are having Staff issues, NO ONE is irreplaceable! So I better get off my high horse, and behave. I am wondering if it was a good idea putting the house in his name. He assures me it was! And that I'm a good hoo mon. Then we had ice cream. I'm glad we got this sorted out!🤣

Love and reprimand are not mutually exclusive, David. Pets and children must be taught appropriate behavior in home and outside or they run amok.
My cat is INCREDIBLY smart. She ignores us if we tell her "No" or use loud noises if my partner or myself catch her scratching the carpet literally inches from her vertical, horizontal, or angled scratchers. She does it deliberately to catch our attention if we're doing chores or watching a movie and always gives me a "Mom, this is not what I wanted" look if immediately cover the spot with a scratcher and then ignore her for a moment to get the point across - which doesn't work. I've since placed a rug in the spot where she scratches, but she's OBSESSED with that one spot and she's slowly shredding it - better the rug than the carpet beneath though! She carefully tip toes across foil to avoid crinkles if we don't want her on a certain surface. The only fix to preventing her from getting on top of the entertainment center (where I keep a singular house plant and several of our figurines) is to place wide boxes on the ends so she can't land a jump on it. My partner and I (try) to play with her a few times daily for several minutes with different types of toys that we rotate through to keep her exercised. We check her litter box every time we pass the bathroom to make sure it's cleaned out (the litter is flushable, which makes scooping and tossing the goods a breeze).
She used to be terrible about chomping on our hands out of nowhere if we offered her a hand to either accept or ignore for pets. Unfortunately, the only way I could train that out of her was establishing dominance with her, which I hated - I had to scruff and (gently) pin her down to the floor under my arm in a flash as soon as it happened, which I hated, but it worked when nothing else did. She only tried a few times to get away after a chomp only to realize that I can move faster than she can - I grew up on a farm, so I'm no stranger to having to safely capture critters by reflex. She was a roughly 8 month old kitten when we found her in a parking lot with a severely broken tail and surrendered her to the humane society for treatment (and adopted her after), so we knew from the start that she had a lot of unknown traumas to recover from. It's taken a long time to establish the trust that we have now, for her to know that we will never intentionally hurt her.
She's 3 years old now and understands the concept of acceptable behaviors for the most part. She's only had one punishment in the last few months that required physical intervention, which was when she deliberately jumped onto the one surface (the entertainment center) that she knows she's not allowed onto and knocked over my plant, which made a huge mess! She tried to run off but I caught her, held her scruff (which I hated) held her face by the mess with a "BAD" and left her in the bathroom with her litter box for 10 minutes so we could clean the mess safely without worrying about her. She let out only a singular loud meow that literally resembled a toddler yelling "MOM", which I felt in my soul. She was definitely sorry for what happened (she kept rubbing my legs when I let her out) and never tried to jump on top of that surface again though - it's the one high space where it isn't safe for her, and she has 2 trees (one of them being almost 5' high), cabinets, a futon, and 2 tables to jump around on/climb at her leisure anytime in that room, so she's not short of high surfaces to hang out on. She has scratchers of every type scattered around the space too!
Believe me, we've tried everything when it comes to discipline and keeping it reasonable wherever it's needed. Hitting is never acceptable, but scruffing is a safe alternative as a last resort, if necessary. I'll also note that she's orange, plays fetch, loves to chat, follows us around like a shadow, and literally enjoyes watching TV. Her spunky, witty personality and companionship definitely outshines the occasional bratty moments. I wouldn't trade her for anything, chaos and all.
Sounds a LOT like Cheezit. Every little bit of your comment. He also meows all the time w/a really irritating meow that sounds as if he's complaining. I found classical music turned up loud helps with that meowing. I've had to rearrange the whole apt. and duct tape the TV to a table. Sigh.
Every cat I have had for the last 28 years has learned that when I say “NO,” very firmly, with my index finger extended, that means an unequivocal negative,and they will turn around and walk away. I teach them that to help my friends who are uncomfortable around, or are afraid of cats. The humans have a sense of control near my cats, and have learned to be very firm. My cats know there are other laps, or other times they are welcome to come into a room. It also helps to keep my cats safe if they could be headed toward something dangerous.

We're lucky that our three cats are not destructive. They're sensitive to the tone of our voices. When we take them outside, they stay close-by in our yard. When we want them to go into the house, we clap our hands and say, "house! house!" and they run in. As they go through the door, I praise them enthusiastically and give them a reassuring pet. They're really good cats.
Awww I love seeing the clip of the mama cat nursing! It reminds me that all of our cats were kittens once and their mom was so patient with them, so we should always be as patient and direct as their moms ❤🇨🇦

Glad to see I'm doing the right things! Also sometimes in addition to saylng "NO" I also take her outside or just open the door and she leaves while looking down, so it looks like she understand what and why. About an hour later she comes back and we make peace ❤

I say "No ma'am! No ma'am!" in a stern voice when my kitty is heading toward someplace she doesn't need to be and when she turns around, I say in a positive voice "Good girl! Good girl!" There have been times I've had to use a distraction to get her away from where she doesn't need to be when she does get in there. And I tell her "Good girl! Good girl!" when she's doing something positive.

double sided tape and aluminum foil don't work with one of my girls - she's a real treat LOL back in the 90's I had a cat that was crazy about any kinds of cords or cables - nothing worked till I got a bunch of toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls and duct taped them together
Scratching posts. Keep adding scratching posts and cat towers until they're no longer interested in whatever it is you're covering in foil and tape.
I will NEVER groom my cat again.

I took in a feral cat who I have fed outside since she was a kitten. She is now approximately 1.5 years old. I did what many say by coaxing her with food, detaining and isolating her to spay her n make sure she was healthy b4 introducing her to my 1st cat. I caged her and opened the door to let her go in and out on her own. I feed her when I feed my other cat. She does play with him.
I can get her to engage a little with birdie or mousey on a stick. The thing is she hides behind the couch. It has been almost 6 months since she was first taken in.
She has many half open places to hide but stays behind the couch.
What else can I do to give her confidence? I don't want her to live in hiding. I've never pet her but I do place my hand near her a bit closer each time.
I do blinky eyes and am always talking to her. Please help me help her.

@@TheCuriousCatt thank you so very much. Her papa, mama n brother still live outside. We noticed lately the mommy n daddy have something going on with their fur. They have been tearing their fur out. There is no way 4 us to detain them so we can get them help. It makes me want to freaking cry. What can we do? I can't tell what is bothering their skin.
It sounds horrible to ask, but should I try n dru9 them with something that will make them sleep temporarily? I think the papa had reddish fur but idk if it was blood, dirt or just the reflection from the sun. I just want to help them.

I'm thankful my cats are height changed because they have both not like trying to climb too high, so no counters or climbing on tops of furniture.
I am Danish. I have lived in Ireland and then England for 60 years, but I still speak Danish. I also grew up in a house with five dogs and seven cats. Effectively they just let us live there because we could open tins. So I learned how to talk to Dogs and Cats, I can even Purr and use the Cat facial expressions. My father had a special word (or sound) for Naughty Cat, Naughty Cat or badly behaved Child. Unfortunatly English lacks the three extra letters we use in Danish to express these extra sounds, but all dogs and most cats understand it. The word is = Fuøøø. It really means NOOOOOO. For some reason, all dogs and many Cats seem to understood this word. Perhaps it was my father's tone of voice, but it works. I still use it if a cat is being naughty. I have seldom heard anyone else use this word, even few Danish people use it now - But it really works.

I'm hoping to get some advice for my cat. My cat Nina goes outside but there are invisible parameters that she knows she should not cross. I spent a lot of time training her this way and it provides her access to the outdoors and provides me with peace of mind that she won't stray too far or go where she shouldn't. She spends most of her outdoor time on the front porch, constantly scanning her territory for intruders (she's an extremely avid hunter and brings in all kinds of choice trophies for me!) Anyway, as all cat lovers know, they are EXTREMELY territorial and if an intruder crosses the barrier they'll run full tilt into this intruder, fighting and hissing. This is especially true for female cats. So my situation is this. Intruding from other cats happens between 1 to 2 weeks. I don't want Nina injured so when I hear the caterwauling I run out the door and start yelling loudly. This makes Nina run in and sends the intruder running. Right after she runs in I praise and pet her and tell her *good guard kitty" to let her know I'm not yelling at her. Problem is, sometimes after these interruptions she'll let me know quite clearly that she wasn't finished and that I interrupted her finishing her business. She'll hiss at me, which she never does otherwise, to send me the message. This doesn't last long and it could mean that she was still very much amped up. So finally the question is when this happens should I not interrupt and let her finish her duty and risk a very probable serious injury?
My cat is deaf. She loves to wake me up with a very loud meow!

Using your hands (particularly fingers) when playing should be encouraged, particularly when bonding with a kitten. It's easy to teach them not to scratch you, just overact being hurt every time claws are felt. Be gentle with your cat, and they will be gentle with you. The mistake many owners make is to move their hand too rapidly, and play roughly, which invites scratches in response.

It's interesting that you and so many others say that cats don't like aluminum foil. Mine love it. They jump on it and play. I've tried cayenne pepper and hot sauce on cables. Used electrical tape on cables. It doesn't work. They know what not to do or where not to go. They are too smart and know how to push my buttons. I love them anyway and couldn't imagine life without them
Yes, typically they don't like aluminum foil, but they have individual differences, so your cats may behave differently. 😸
Hot sauce to deter animals is cruel. Please don’t do it. Their taste & smell much more sensitive than humans.

I used to yell at my cat and spray her with water when she scratched my recliner. Now that she's gone, I don't want to get rid of the chair *because* of her scratch marks, so now I display it with pride. I also used to punish her for chewing cords. I didn't know until much later that her gums were all inflamed and that's why she was doing it. She was in pain and I was punishing her for it. ARGH. Thanks for this video. As for other topics, I'd love to learn about house plant safety. My cat got seriously ill and I later found chew marks on a plants. They told me it could be pancreatitis, but she could have been poisoned, although she wasn't vomiting. I plan to get two new furbabies this year and they will live like royalty after learning from so many mistakes.

I'm glad my two cats don't need me to wash the litter box tray. I scoop out any wet sand and they seem very content with that.
My cat says NO back. Lol . I use chuch. That sound works on wild animals as well.
My cat used to play around and make noise at night. So each time she did it I would pick her up, give her a big old kiss on the head and then gently put her outside for the rest of the night. Problem corrected and she never felt like I was mad at her or she was a bad cat. Simple association.
I know how to scold my cat, I give him ear rubs and butt scratches and lots of nose kisses. He hates/loves it. He’s a butt nose❤
Basically you have to sort of act like a cat to get through to a cat. I've used most of the methods in this video over many years and they do work, sometimes it requires repetition for as long as it takes but eventually the cat either figures it out or gets the message. Using any physical punishment like hitting, well, cats have excellent memories for those that do those types of things and they never forget it so essentially you've ruined your relationship with a cat.

Clapping my hands loudly or a shorts aggressive sounding verbiage works very well with my cat.
I haven't done this for a very long time, but I'm very rare occasion when she's been extremely naughty sometimes I will confine her to one room for an hour or two to and she usually comes out looking like she's very sorry about her behavior.
She will generally be more cautious about her behavior for at least a few hours
We have a pill bottle that we shake. Our female cat is so curious and has the same places she gets into trouble. We just bought some toys and it has helped her as she is an indoor kitty and gets bored.

Yes, my cat likes to wrestle/ play with my hand . More often than not, I had at least puncture wounds or (a little bit worse).
And I know, that is a part of playing and he does not want to hurt me.
But he was never a playful cat before... But one day I bought a drink from the liquor store... and i made a prop of the paper around it, and threw it away, towards my waste paper basket... ! And my cat reacted on it, like he was loving it
The next time I came to the liquor store, I told the nice girl behind the counter, that my cat loved this papers so much.
And she gave me about 6 of this papers... and so it started.
Yes my cat (Nelson) still likes to play with my hand... but if he is coming too strong, I know that I have enough props left , so when he is too strong to my hands ... I can throw away these props in my living room & kitchen. And yes Nelson started to like it. That was an easy way correcting my cat, without behaving like a boss.

I've had cats all my life. But most of them were rescues of older ages. One and my latest was a kitten.
I've recently taken on a brand new kitten. I'm puzzled and confused about their behavior. As airshow as they are, it's a challenge to be patient and do things in their best interest to teach them.
Hitting had not even crossed my mind. Even if hitting was suggested I'd fail, because I just couldn't ever raise an angry hand at such a little creature who depends on me and needs to trust his surroundings, and me.
Mine is too clever to use a spray bottle. He caught on the first time. I felt mean too.
They are babies, they just don't know.
Watch videos of mother cats reprimanding their babies. I've perfected the mom's vocal version of NO! And her hiss. So far it's working for the immediate misbehavior. He does stop, for a moment.
I also consider the mind of a two year old. How many two year olds learn after told no the first few times?
I am frustrated at the incessant biting mine continues to do. He's not being mean, he's playing. I keep toys nearby to distract him but he still thinks my hand is great for sinking his tiny tiger teeth into.

I adopted a cat recently that had been in a household with other cat. She thinks biting me is playing. Every time I think I have taught her not to she stars all over again. I am not using my hands. She will initiate it by biting my legs or arms. Wherever she sees bare skin. I tell he no and then she will sneak back and take a quick bite when I am not looking.

What do I do if he’s pooping were he shouldn’t even though I put him in the litter tray
1. Make sure the actual tray is clean. Wash it well between litter changes. Own two trays and use alternately so one is airing while the other is in use.
2. Is the litter box too small.
3. The cat may hate the feel or scent of the liter your using.
4. Is the box in the same room as her food or water. Move that.
5. Is the cat unwell? A trip to the vet may be needed to find out. Pain when in the box may cause the cat to associate pain with the box.
6. Your cat may not like where the box is - in a high traffic area, or too far away. Is it all the way in the basement, or out in the garage, etc
7. Do you scoop the poop daily?
8. She may need two boxes- one for pee and one for poop.
9. Clean every spot she poops on to eliminate the smell. A cat’s nose is much better than ours.
10. Cover areas where she poops so that she can’t access it right away. I used pot lids.
11. You might have to put her in the room that has the box around the time she usually goes.

Believe me, cats know when they do something naughty.
My cats are mostly very well behaved. When i go on vacation and leave them with a carer, thats the only time they rip the roller towel to shreds. And the guilt when they poop outside the litter box. They know very well.

If your cat does something that is a problem, simply raise your voice as they are doing it, mine will freeze, then stop and as soon as she leaves, I give her a quick pet, and reassure her that the louder voice happens when she does that I only had to raise my voice a few times, and most of the bad behavior is gone, or greatly reduced to a mild annoyance
They are all different. Really. That won't work on my cat. Nor yelling 'no' real loud. He just looks at me while continuing to scratch the rug.

I started having seizures in September 2023. My 11 y/o cat started slapping me in the mouth. We'll just be laying, watching a movie, and she'll just turn and slap me... no claws but still. I tell her "No, ma'am! if you don't want to be with me then get down" and I'll set her down and away from me. She never did this before... could it be bc of the seizures??? 😢

My youngest cat has been pooping on the bathroom floor ever since she was 4 most old. She is 5 yrs old now and still does it. She knows how to use her box. And l clean her box daily. I even stopped using scented littler. I have even used 2 litter boxes since l have 2 cars. But they will use each other's box's and she still poops on the floor.

If my cat has the opportunity to run out the door, he will do it. Once outside he turns into a feral cat. He will attack me, bite and hiss. Inside the house he is social and cuddly. The behavior outdoors is scary. It is as if he sees me as a predator. Has anyone experienced this?

My cat will scratch the wall corner. I move her to the scratch pad. & none of my cats are affected by foil. None of my cats mind citrus. Thankfully none chew on cords.

I had to explain to my kids that you cannot really discipline a cat. They do not understand it. You have to correct every no with a yes. My cat absolutely knows that pooping right beside the litter box isnt good but I will not say a thing because I would rather it be there than under the bed or something. I praise her when she pees in the litter box.

Appropriate is a human conditioning. Right and Wrong, every living being known right or wrong for themselves. It's not something that has to be taught. What is taught, and perhaps accepted is YOUR wrong and wrong treatment from another. Cars and dogs do what we do, they are born knowing right and wrong. It's arrogance of humans to think they don't know already. All we're doing is teaching them through repetition that as humans we want them not to wreck or demolish something we own. In the wild is different than being domesticated.
I redirected aggressive behavior to toys and now My cat zoomies towards wherever my head is and smacks the hell out of me when he wants to play. He doesn't scratch or bite anymore. But that smack isn't soft either.
