The MvC2 community actually started the meme since the last time they were at Evo was when the hotels stopped having CRT's in the rooms so folks were quite literally running sets on the tv's that were in the bathroom. At some point that was lost entirely and folks just saw *haha Melty in the bathroom* but the association of like two pictures was all that it took and folks never brought up MvC2 in regards to it.
We were kicked out of the main ballroom's BYOC at one point as well (much early on, 2008 or so) because MvC2 was taking too long and they needed all the set ups so we quite literally ran the entire tournament in a singular hotel hallway instead.
We've run tournaments in front of Snapple machines, park gazebos, in the middle of Central Park, the list goes on, but giving credit and props where its due falls to the wayside where it's just easier / funnier to run with the meme I guess.
    Ah well.

I think the joke is funny when its done in good spirit
And its something iconic that i have considered a honorary jest as an outsider perspective
I respect the melty players for playing in that bathroom because it sounds like one of those legendary stories within a friend group that gets passed down

it's always funny seeing the bathroom jokes, because the most famous one, with the laptop on the logs on the toilet and the TV in the sink is of my friend.
All these years later he'll still whoop my ass with his Kouma.

I feel lucky that I've pretty much only seen the good half of the meme (in fact, I think the first whisper of Melty I ever heard was a video that brought up how they’re so passionate that they play in parking lots/bathrooms/etc.), but I definitely get the feeling of people getting tired of it after a decade...
Hell, my favorite FG franchise has suffered from a meme that hasn't been around half as long as the bathroom meme and I got tired of it after a few months...

I know the AKI VA meant well but goddamn if that wasn’t the corniest tweet mentioning Melty I’ve read in a hot min.

Im pretty sure I was at the tourney where this meme originated for melty specifically, and even I'm not sure on the whole context. My understanding was that there where simply not enough outlets for all the set ups in the byoc, and so the melty players came up with the idea of using the outlets that were in the bathrooms. I dont think there was a time where I went to a tourney and didnt bring a melty set up (either laptop for mbaacc days, or crt + ps2 for mbaa days). I cant recall my set up ever being in the bathroom, but I certainly set it up in hallways, in the lobby, in the van off the cig lighter power, and iirc outside before.
It frustrated me a lot after evo 2010 that melty just kept getting the shaft at majors and that a lot of the old players saw it as a great time to let the game die, to the point where at nec 2012 like there was simply nowhere to set up for melty anywhere for like half the event, and meanwhile persona had like fully half the byoc area, and (as I recall) an explicit promise from TOs that there would be space for melty in the byoc. That was the main driving force for why I stopped traveling to majors after that. To my great surprise, melty kinda rebounded after that, especially in 2014 from what I remember.
This could have happened to any game that was not a main game at a major. BYOCs are usually 1st come 1st serve, and almost always run out of space in one way or another.

First I get to joke but I don't get the joke. At the same time, I'm going to watch this video to find out. But is it just to Fighting game community trying to be funny?
