I don’t mean this as any hate. I understand the part of the knowledge and love of the art, but does it stop there? It doesn’t seem like there is a love for personal style and showing why these things matter to you. Again I don’t mean this as any hate, I’m just curious. As someone who has spent the last 7 years sewing and making clothes, are the clothes and knowledge only for the sake of having it and appreciating it or does it go deeper. Cuz while the fits are nice I just don’t see much variation between any other archivist
No offense taken, you have a completely valid point. Archival fashion is a very niche scene and many get into it for many different reasons. The exclusivity of owning a rare item that other cannot obtain, appreciating predecessors who laid the foundation, or the community it builds. I cannot speak on behalf of other archivists/collectors, but the main reasons I collect is personal longevity and brand appreciation. Over the years, I’ve searched for items that can create a capsule wardrobe, and Helmut Lang hits all the right notes for me. I look at items that have stood the test of time and base my wardrobe around the idea of those pieces. I’ve gone through the phases of having a giant collection, and in the end, it’s not worth it. It’s much more rewarding to have a smaller collection of items that mesh well together and that are timeless. I won’t devolve into how a brand can quite literally alter your perspective on a certain lifestyle, but for me, I’ve learned the importance of less is more and patience. Before I go into brand appreciation, I have to rebuttal with your statement about there not being a love for personal style with this clothing. Whether it be archival, modern, or custom clothing, they all create some attachment to the owner. And with that attachment comes incorporating into use. Someone can purchase a HL trucker jacket, and then pair it with Zara denim and custom sneakers and right there is someone expressing their style. Style comes in many different forms, it’s not cookie cutter. So when someone who collects clothing like myself, I view style differently and take inspiration from the time capsule that the designer was channeling through their work. At the end of the day, it’s quite literally clothes. Some look deeper into the clothing and base their life off it, I mean, look at Rick Owens collectors. They are passionate WITH style. It comes in different forms. To answer the why these things matter to me, I point to brand appreciation. It’s hard to put into words how much archival clothing has impacted today’s clothing and new designers. References are not just drawn from Helmut, but soooo many other designers and ideas that were put out in the world before anyone else today. One of the main reasons I collect old clothing, and others too, is because we feel that these items need to be documented and continue to be shared 20+ years later. It may just look like a collector flaunting their collection on screen, but what really is going on years of dedication to learning about a specific brand and experimenting with their work. I agree that someone people don’t view it like how I and others do and they just buy into it because it’s the latest trend, but for some it’s a hobby/lifestyle. If any of this comes off as rude, I apologize. That is not my intent. I feel passionate about this and it’s sometimes hard to get my point across in words. I hope this can at least answer a few questions you had : )
@@closingsong I appreciate this answer. I’m extremely invested into clothing and it has become my life. I’ve spent countless hours learning about different brands as well as more hours creating my own. So I can very clearly see where you’re coming from. It can change your life and perspective. I think you answered my question or the way I’ve interpreted your answer is that it’s not always gonna be like me where I want to take all this knowledge and build my own helmet lang or do everything my way. Some people just want to appreciate (like you said) those who already laid the groundwork instead of trying to build on that. I think the last point I wanna make is that kind of like with jobs. Everybody is important whether you’re a plumber or a doctor or a lawyer or whatever it is. We need all of these jobs for our world to function. So kinda like we need all these people who interpret fashion differently for fashion to continue to make a difference in somebody’s life. Much love keep doing ur thing 💙

What's your opinion on the last ten years of the brand??
2005 was the last good year. everything after that is 👎🏼👎🏼
@closingsong although I'm a fan of some of the bags
leather sleeve jacket too hard
couldnt agree more
