I always shop the week after major shopping holidays for the new markdowns. More to choose from/more stock, great clearance prices. And no matter the time of year, I always browse the purse isles. Never pay full price for a name brand handbag!
As a worker at a TjMaxx, I can tell you that our markdowns are usually done in order of what arrives to us in our shipments. So we could have one shirt on clearance and an identical one at regular price because it came to us on a later shipment sold to us by the same vendor. My store only goes by this system and often refuses to manually adjust the price if our system doesn’t automatically mark it down, so approaching a cashier about a price discrepancy may not result in getting the clearance price you see. That decision is up to the discretion of the supervisor on duty though, so it doesn’t hurt to ask
Best deal? I actually found my husband at TJMaxx! We met while working together in a store in MA. We've been married 28 years. My kids call it the mothership. So now when an associate at checkout asks if we found what we were looking for, we have a good laugh and tell them. : ) Edit: Aww thanks for the sweet responses. You are all great. I guess I should add that we have EIGHT kids. : )
I’m not very good at RUclips but I really wanted to bring this to your attention. I go to the Dollar Tree regularly for some of my household shopping. Not just to save money, but to get a brand I like. I got excited when I saw the Cascade pods that I usually buy at the grocery store. Then I did the math. There were only two pods in the bag for $1.25 each bag or .62 cents per pod. Amazon has the same pods for .31 per pod. I’m so glad I take the time to do the math and research! I really enjoy your program and I especially like the way you dress!
Tip of my own - if you find something there that you love, buy it! Chances are when you go back, it won’t be there. Especially with items you need to match such as drapery - I needed 4 panels to cover my living room window so I took everything I needed right away while it was in stock. With their 30-day return policy, you’re better to buy the item and see if you like it or if it suits your decor - if it doesn’t, it’s easy to return in less than a month. Additionally, don’t be stuck on buying matchy matchy sets! Sheet sets already come with fitted sheet, top sheet and 2 standard pillow cases so select a different color for the shams or duvet cover - no need in having everything monotone. Also, since the store gets daily shipments Monday to Friday, you might go back a few days later and find something that would coordinate perfectly. The store usually carries the same brands - Pure Living Bamboo, Kate Spade, Perry Ellis, Hilfiger, etc so don’t panic right away if you love a particular brand like this and don’t see it one day - chances are the beans will have more in-store selection in stock again in a few days or a few weeks. Keep in mind that some stores stock more of one item than a nearby store. The store a town away, stocks lots of the “Skinny Girl” brand coffee flavours and drapery while the store in my town has more pet supplies and luggage. The store on the other side of my town has more children’s clothes and kitchen ware. Supply varies based on shopper’s habits in the store’s immediate trading area and it’s square footage in the retail space.
I used to work at TJMaxx, it was like working at a higher end scavenger hunt. I still love going in to find things-especially for special occasions. Great list!
Great video! As a former TJ Maxx manager, I’ll add my two cents: • Despite popular belief, the yellow ticket isn’t necessarily the final price. Yellow tickets get marked down two additional times before they’re liquidated. If you’re able to befriend a markdowns associate (they usually work M-F mornings), you might be able to get some insider info about when/if things are getting marked down further. • In general, you can get a lot of markdown info if you can befriend a markdown associate or a manager. Technically we’re not supposed to give away when markdowns are, but if we like you, we’ll probably give you the scoop. 😉
I feel for you. I shop TJMAXX but work retail and ppl always be trying to haggle. You can try to haggle but you should understand that the priced marked is the intended price unless other advertised by the store. We're not a bazaar or flea market shoppers.🤣
The “pricing errors” also come from the fact that if we get multiple of one item but at different times they’ll basically “time out” and it’ll clearance for being there too long vs it’s “newer” version. I asked about this a lot when I first started at Marshall’s “why is this one on clearance but the same thing over here isn’t?” It’s based on when they come into the store :)
Hello everyone, as an employee of TJ Maxx, I just wanted to point out a few things. It might be a little bit of an exaggeration to say you can haggle on prices. Anything labeled “As Is” is typically labeled like that to let associates know that that is the final price for the item and it has already been markdown for any associated issues. If you find something damaged and not marked down, there is a spreadsheet held behind the counter that dictates what price it can be reduced to. It’s possible depending on the item, damage, and people involved that you might be able to get something like $2 below this if you’re going to buy it and get it out of the store. However, this is really an exception to the rule rather than the rule, so as a cashier I ask for everyone to not expect this as a given when at cash out. In regards to the return policy, you’re absolutely right about the extended return policy at the end of the year. Just to clarify a bit more though, typical return policy is within 30 days with receipt back on method of payment, over 30 days with receipt is store credit with tax, over 90 days with receipt is store credit no tax. As for no receipt but we can identify the item in our system you get store credit, though in CT it’s law that you lose tax on the transaction, but I’m not sure about elsewhere. And just for fun, I want to explain the red tag bonus content at the end. In the case of the white shirt, I can see on the tag that the style number starts with 56 and can’t read the rest. The $5 red tag has a style number of 162697. If the style numbers don’t match, it’s not the right ticket for the clothing item. Also like mentioned a bit in the video, items are marked down based on time spent in the store, with older items having gone potentially through more than one markdown cycle. However, this means that we can get two identical shipments of clothing, but the clothing that was in the store first will be marked down while the new shipment will not be. The key here is that each shipment of that identical piece of clothing will have a different style number on its tag which will identify whether it is or isn’t available for a price match with a discounted version of the clothing in the store. This is stuff that I’d love for all my customers to know, though I can’t obviously expect anyone to when we all shop at a ton of different stores. Other than these few things, I think it was a great video that really highlights how to maximize your savings at TJ Maxx.
I was explained by the corporation that they bid on their merchandise from pallets that have been put on auction among several stores including Ross, Burlington etc. a lot of their merchandise still have labels from places like Macy’s, Dillards and I’ve seen Nordstrom and Neiman tags too. Some of these stuff were over manufactured for theses stores and ended up in auction. Explained by the corporation in a study I had to do.
I used to work for them, and as far as I know, they do not have “knock offs.” They have a long standing commitment with the brands, so they make deals with them directly and they will make the clothes specifically for the store. That’s why they might have the store in the label. It’s a promise that the store will always buy from them, and that’s how they get good prices directly from the brands.
It seems like most of the heavily discounted brand items are just last season's leftovers. I'm fine with that...makes for great product and excellent discount.
When they make specifically for store, they downgrade everything to make it cheaper. Ex. - different fabrication, cheaper zippers, buttons etc. I work in garment industry in nyc
@@ValiaKloeppelhence why it’s made in a different factory. Not sure how the others don’t see that. He explains the tag differences I get they have contracts to be able to use the designer label to not get in trouble.
Regarding the bonus tip, Tj Maxx will also usually get the same product sent at different times, especially if it is popular like the Nike shirt. When I worked there, the older product would get marked down first, and you can tell which one is older by the number in the square at the top.
I used to work for TJMAXX for about 4 years. I started as a part time cashier, ended as a key holder. I wanted to be a buyer. Depending on the traffic of the store and the sales will determine how often the store gets shipments. Some stores will get shipments everyday, other stores will get shipments a few times a day. If your store seems to always have crap, its probably a dump store. The store opens to employees around 7 (I think 🤔) and there is a mark down schedule that's must be complete within about a week or two. The red tickets are first scans, yellow tickets are last scans. That's where you can find items at their lowest like pennies on the dollar. This is about twice a year I think. Honestly depending on your store, they'll take anything back anytime. As long as you have at least the number sequence at the top of the receipt we can put that in the system to pull the product.
I shop at TJ Maxx and Marshalls regularly. Two things that I have learned: they save merchandise from year to year. Last year I bought a burgundy plaid Nautica shirt, and this past winter, I found the exact same shirt for the exact same price. I asked a local Store clerk and she said yes they do this all the time. I don’t know that they store them, but they definitely get the same products again and again. The other thing that I have learned is that you can still return something after 30 days but you’ll just get a store credit. That’s fine, I shop here all the time. But sometimes I just cannot get back soon enough because you bet your butt I am not going in there on a Saturday! Also, sidenote, Nordstrom rack takes their prices up and down. They will literally peel a clearance sticker off some thing and sell it again for a higher price depending on the season.
As a TJ Maxx employee, a lot of those products that are damaged that already have a red clearance tag on them. They have those markdowns because they are damaged. So asking for a lower price on a damaged product won’t lead to a lower price if it has a red tag. Even if it didn’t they would only do a 10% markdown
Pro tip: Utilize a price compare app and your google lens. I save tons because I unashamedly will scan bar codes and take pics to ensure I'm getting the best deal. I am unashamed because retailers are unashamed at all the tricks they try to pull. 😁
Coming from HomeGoods: 1) TJX sequels their stock..meaning that if you see something in July, you will probably see it again next July. 2) the tags at HG have the month/yr listed on the tag, so you know when it came into the store. If you see two items that are the same and onw of them is marked down, you should check the dates on the tag. It likely means that they have had one for three months and one that is newer. 3)Markdowns happen every two to three months. The best time to take advantage of markdowns is early January and Late Summer. 4)The red tags have a 4 digit number followed by a letter. I can't speak to the meaning of the "M" shown in the video as HG and TJMaxx have different rules on some things...but the I stands for Initial. This means that the item has only undergone the first round of markdowns. The S stands for Subsequent. This is the second round of markdowns. Once the item hits subsequent, they most likely won't mark it down any more. 5) Seasonal items will get the initial markdown, then the subsequent markdown, and then get zeroed out and trashed. So if you want the seasonal item, you better grab it. 6) That actually goes for anything...if you see it, you better grab it. It's better to buy it and return it than you think it's going to be there when you come back. 7) If you see an item without a price, find something similar and take both up to the cash register. That way you don't have to wait for a price check.
Hi Brittany…TY for sharing insider info! I’m wondering how to tell what the original date of an item is ? I’ve heard numerous people talk about things being on a 24 month cycle but still don’t understand how do you know when an item originally came to the store when reading the tag? (The tag has the number 17 then it’s the 17th month of a 24 month cycle but how do you know the starting point?)
I work at tjmaxx in Texas and I'm actually the one doing markdowns. When we have the regular price for one item and a clearance for another it's because we get the same item but at different times. So some r newer while others have been there for months at a time.
I’ve been in TJX corporate in product development for the last 16 years. A lot of the info on here is true. I want to note that our license agreements we have with brands is a true relationship with the brand and all of our designs are reviewed by the brand before we go into production. Our goal is to always fit the brands DNA and ensure the quality is upheld to the brands standards. So they are definitely not knockoffs.
You are GREAT. You are keeping a tradition alive. You remind me of those slick TV salesmen who wore shinny suits and loud ties, who probably smelled like cigars who used to sell stuff in the middle of the night. I love your breathless delivery on these videos.
Fyi all those stores are owned by the same corporation and all shopping tips in this video would apply to any of those labels. All stores follow the same policies.
What I love is finding actual designer items where the “compare” price is significantly below the actual list price. This happens a lot. Just got a $350 BCBG winter coat on clearance for $60.
I found a gorgeous royal blue designer winter coat at TjMaxx many years ago at a ridicuously low price. I later found it on the designer’s website. They listed the price around $350.00. From the photo on the website I could see why it ended up at TjMaxx. The buttons on the collar were positioned wrong, so the collar didn’t sit quite as it should. That was a simple and cheap fix by my alterations person. It would have been fine to leave it as is, but it did look better after it was corrected. I was quite proud of myself for that find, and I still have that coat over 13 years later and a move to Europe.
I love the bedding. I always pick one color & mix/match patterns. It has always worked out so well. I love home goods & tjmaxx !! Your video was very insightful 💜 thanks so much
That last bit about bedding and not finding matching items literally made me laugh remembering what happened to me several years ago. I found a beautiful Ralph Lauren comforter and 1 matching fitted sheet. There are several TJ Maxx stores around our area. Over the next few months I went to other stores and managed to pick up the flat sheet, dust ruffle, pillow cases, and 1 pillow sham. About 3 months after finding everything except the 1 additional sham we took a little road trip. Along the way we saw a TJ Maxx so I stopped, ran in and YES they had the pillow sham I needed. I was so excited. A few days after returning home, I got out all the pieces, ready to transform my bedroom. Just one problem. It had taken so long to accumulate everything (total about 6 months) I really no longer liked or wanted it. I had kept all receipts so I took everything to the closest TJ Maxx and returned it all! The clerk was exceptionally nice and I told her that the next person who really liked this pattern would at least get all pieces at once. We laughed about it, I got my refund, and left. I now make sure I can get everything at once so this doesn't happen again.😊👍
Hi Marshall’s cashier here, the bargaining thing ONLY works if the damaged item you found does not have a marked down tag already. Unless you can prove there is a new issue with the product, we can only apply a 10% markdown each time. I’ve had people come up to me and try to bargain more and more and then bring up my coordinator and bargain with them and waste time in line. We can’t give more than 10% off at a time. Also if you see something with a yellow tag, it means it does not go any lower and we will just throw it away (mark out) if it is returned or given a new reason to mark down. As for the two same items with different prices, look at the u line code above the price. If they have different codes we can’t match the price. Loved working at Marshall’s but people definitely got too comfortable yelling at teenagers just trying to do their jobs.
I used to work at tj maxx def find out what day your store receives its shipment!!! Now you DO NOT want to go on the day the truck arrives cuz the truck can come at any time during that day, they have to hang up all clothes, add sensors, and they also need time to put it out on the sales floor so I recommend going a day or two after the day the truck comes!!!! If you go the day after ask an employee working the sales floor if the entire truck has been put out on the salesfloor yet or is there stuff in the back to be put out still!!!! So typically home toys and beauty goes out alot faster and before clothes since clothes needs hung and sensored!
Thanks for the informative video, although I have stopped at TJMaxx and Marshall's before you were born. My favorite snag from TJMaxx was in Charlotte NC. I found a purple tagged, gorgeous Italian lace blouse with invisible zipper in the back. Someone had stripped the zipper, leaving it impossible to untangle much less try on. The original TJMaxx price was over $200. marked down to $5 on clearance. I have seen similar lace items in Italy and knew that it was going home with me. I bought a new invisible zipper for $14. and took it to a local person to repair. I invested $20. the seamstress charged $5. but I gave her $20. So, $40. for a drop dead gorgeous blouse was an amazing deal. Never pass up something that needs a repair. Most times you still come out ahead.
My TJ Max shopping secret, buy their wrapping paper. It’s high quality stuff, a descent amount on the roll and it’s $3.99 (at my store) if you compared it to Walmart or Target it’s still a better price (Target is $5.99) but TJ is still thicker and better quality.
I am obsessed with TJMAXX, homegoods, homesense and marshalls. They have great items. I live in the DC metro area and we have great options. I enjoy going to multiple stores over the course of a few days! The luxury items are awesome buys! Great info.
Mix and match bedding is just fine with lots of people. You can easily coordinate pieces from various lines by focusing on finding contrasting or complimentary tones, hues, and materials rather than fixating on having that perfectly " matchey- matchey" look.
YES! And how many sets of sheets do you need? We have 2 for each temperature arc (lightweight cotton for hot summer nights, midweight jersey for spring and fall, and heavy flannel for winter) - there would be no way of getting them all to match between the weights. We have one on the bed, switch to the next while we wash the first, and then switch back the next week and wash the second, until its time to put warmer or cooler sheets on then we switch to the next pair and repeat.
I purchased my dog's bed from TJMax. It is my dog's favorite bed. She has 4 beds in the house. One for each room. Her least favorite bed is the one my adult son purchased from Walmart.
I am here in Calabasas California. In a neighbor city of WESTLAKE Village we have a very *small* TJ MAXX with a *Runway* *Section* . Did not know what it was till I saw Heather Locklear there at near closing time shopping there. The employees made comment on how she ONLY goes straight there to mens; often VERY late. I asked about that men's section. They told me about deals, actual labels (PURPLE) diff, etc. Got a Polo by Ralph Lauren lambskin jacket for $269-original price $899, leather Tom Ford pants $229-orginal price $569. PURPLE LABELS are the key.
@@karenoliver113 What?? You are losing out. An odd item may be more from one particular Amazon seller. I order every day from Amazon, sometimes twice a day. I love the convenience of receiving packages most often the next day, sometimes 2 days later. And returns are the best. You just take the item, you don't even need a bag or a box, over to Kohl's and they have an Amazon return there. The return literally takes 30 seconds. Plus, you receive a 25% coupon for Kohl's. I personally don't care for Kohl's but for people who shop at Kohl's, that is a hefty discount. Even if I may pay a little more for a particular item, it's worth it for less hassles. And their website is the best shopping website I've seen, and I've seen a lot. Plus, the free shipping can't be beat when you have Prime. Can you tell how much I love Amazon? 😉
My wife worked at TJMaxx in Jewelry for 15 years. She is now retired. There are some amazing buys on watches, rings, earrings etc if you know your stuff. TJMaxx is the only one of the TJX chain that has Jewelry so they get amazing items.
I agree. I got a Gucci necklace at the downtown Seattle store, for not much money. It is a small silver shamrock with a tiny “G” on one of the clover leafs. Edit: I just came from the store here on Maui and they had two Gucci rings for $150, sadly not in my sizes. One was a cigar band with “Gucci” in fine lettering, and the other was an open heart.
I currently work at tjmaxx and we get new items everyday besides Sunday. The weekend is just trash period because the line is crazy long and the store is super cluttered with people and displaced product.
I’m in DC and I see a lot of those runway sections. The audacity of them thinking I’d pay nearly 1k for a piece tho.. 🤣 the whole reason I’m there is bc I’m broke in the first place!
My TJ here in the Dallas area once had the cutest _tiniest_ designer purse on one of the front handbag racks...for *$1,200!!!* 😱 About fell on the floor when I saw that. TJ or not, that price was outta control!
@@jekku4688 yeah! You better believe that if I save up $1,200 for a bag, I ain’t buying it at TjMaxx! I want champagne and a red carpet for this purchase! I also want the box and I’ll be displaying that by the front door 🤣
I have been with the company for 5 years, and I can tell you, if something is broken most we can take off is 10%. All the items shown in your video have a red ticket because they are already discounted.... you can't "haggle."
I came here to say this. I used to work there and it is so frustrating having customers ask for more to be taken off when it was already discounted originally for the “damage.”
I bought a very pretty table top fountain from Marshalls. It was sitting below a display. I asked the clerk if the price was right - $10.00. She said yes. I checked it over, pump, cord, etc. I have had it on my deck for four years, works great. I have not seen any like it below $60-$70 at any garden center. My favorite score.
Even though the product is damaged we cannot sale merchandise since it goes against store policy, e.g, broken flower pot, picture frames, cracked mirrors, and so on.
I live in the suburbs of Houston Texas, and I used to get designer labels at my ritzy store, the prices were comparable to the 70% of the mayor designer prices. I have worked very upscale stores all my life, the problem is that many times you could get better prices if you waited for the designer final sale than the T. max or Marshall’s.
Everything comes in with price tags already on the items. The reason there may be 2 different prices on identical items is because all merch doesn't come in at the same time. The longer an item is in the store the chances of a price reduction is likely. Sometimes its not simply the vendor. So keep an eye out for stuff all over the store. We didnt always put stuff into a clearance area
I usually buy high end hair products from TJ Maxx. I've been a product junkie of hair products and tools for years so I know what most of them are priced at elsewhere. I find that most of the compare pricing on those items is actually lower than what they retail for originally. I don't know why the hair stuff is like that but that means I get an even better deal.
I was actually in a TJ maxx and some guy was picking up at least 4 Dooney and bourke handbags while talking on the phone about the colors, next thing I see him walking out the door with all of them! The getaway car was right out the door! Unbelievable
The best deals I've gotten from any of their related families of stores is when there's no price tag on something. They ask you to find anything similar in the store (say a pot by a different brand but of a similar size). Then, you take both to the register, and they suggest a price (always lower) and make a tag for the item. Note: Do not abuse this, but it's a great deal when possible.
I don’t think the price would always be lower, most of the time it would be the same price, not a different one…. That’s why they find a similar item to price match
One of the things I found in TJ Maxx is sometimes you will find two exact items with different prices and the explanation as told to me by the store manager is it often depends when it comes in, as the first item has been there longer they will mark it down to get it sold to make room for newer shipments, even though the same exact item may come in a newer shipment it will have a higher price due to it being nu-stock
Tjmaxx is my favorite store and close to where live , I go N shop more often than I should but I know most of the employees by shopping there and even my pet loves the store, thank you for the tips!
People with the Amazon app open might be doing retail arbitrage. So they scan items at TJ Maxx and see how much and how well it sells on Amazon and if it sells well/has a high rank and sells for more on Amazon through FBA etc they'll buy all of that item and sell it there.
I hate those people. I’ve started hearing of them in the IG search and feature reels. I’ve read a comment from a grandma telling that she has their grandkids with her due to problems of their parents and couldn’t buy shoes to her grandkids because these people that buy in bulk from these stores and don’t allow them to buy low cost Items. My heart shattered reading that.
@@monihernandez28 I see people doing that when thrifting. My Goodwill has a lot of nice books I wanted to get a couple textbook type books but some jerk filled up two carts full of books and then started scanning them.
@@scifydi6446 those who take advantage of those systems are awful and selfish people. Those items are in those stores so people with less opportunities for buying retail and full prices can have at least nice things or need to save up even for a third of the price, and they are people who who can pay full price in retail stores. And they sell at full prices at places like Amazon, I am like NO!
@@monihernandez28 You think those stores care if you are disadvantaged? Obviously not. The purpose of those stores is to MAKE MONEY. Nothing more nothing less. Don't be so naive.
I worked in the stockroom, on the trucks, I had a stacked of merchandise everyday put aside, my paycheck was spent and more by the end of the week, i was like a kid in a candy store, can’t beat there prices, every time I opened a box it like Christmas, you never know what’s in them
@@natalieoliver2837Sounds familiar! I worked in a thrift store (not one of the huge chain stores), and my first few weeks was Nirvana! I couldn't believe all the stuff pouring in through the donation window. Of course, employees had to wait until an item was on the floor for a while before we could buy it.
As a Marshall’s employee make sure to tell them stop switching the tags when they return something and stop returning trying tjmaxx things at Marshall’s
Yes. Marshalls =/= TJMaxx, despite both being under TJX. This means that you can’t return Marshalls items to TJMaxx and vice versa. I don’t give a shit if you have to drive 30 minutes away, the store literally cannot process the item.
"...to stop switching the tags..." you gave good advice. I think most honest people are bothered by tag switching and other sneaky behaviors that cause headaches for store employees, and cause price increases for customers.
I worked P/T at TJMaxx for 5 years. After January inventory, around 1/7 and after, are yellow tag markdowns. And right before school starts in the fall. They get some amazing deals. One year I found a beautiful coat in my size hanging on the end of some clearance pajamas. I checked online. It was on clearance at Nordstrom for $220, regularly $450. I got it for $25. It was in perfect condition. The best deal I ever found was an Alaïa purse. I didn’t know the brand, but it looked expensive, smelled like good leather and was made in Paris. I went online. It was a $2,000 purse. It had been returned to our store from a runway store. Their original price was $259. It was marked down to $59. I even went to the manager to make sure it wasn’t a mistake. She said it’s mine for $59, plus my discount. We used to carry good watches but not lately. They’re a better price than anywhere, Costco, Amazon. One year I got a Movado Museum watch for my husband for $89 final clearance. Those were all authentic. I learned something new. I did not know some of the designer clothing are knockoffs. I’ll need to check them more carefully next time I shop. Their jams, jellies, olives, gourmet foods are a really good deal. So are cosmetics, health aids and beauty products. At least half price and sometimes 75% less, even on high end things. Generally, women’s undergarments are very good prices. With yellow tag items, keep the receipt and keep the tags on until you’re sure you don’t need them. Jewelry returns always require receipts. I buy pet toys, beds and treats there. Baby clothes are really discounted. I’ve bought gifts that I knew were expensive and they were probably 75-90% off. Obviously, even the employees spend a lot of money there. My daughter still works there. It was a fun place to work. I was retired from something else, so I did it until the lockdowns. If you see a lot of yellow tags but you’ve got something with a red tag, ask at the front if there has been an additional markdown. They can check for you. There’s a machine. If something is slightly damaged, they’ll usually give you 10% off if you ask. It’s an easy summer job or weekend job for for kids, too. They hire at 16, possibly 15, are very flexible with schedules and they are looking for people. A lot of college kids would come back and work during breaks. I think pay starts at $12/hr now. My daughter has fun there, too. I’d worked at three, high-end retail stores at Christmas seasons or summers during college when I was young. It wasn’t as fun. People seemed pretentious. Not there. I guess I’m a recruiter. Happy shopping.
Hey, I had the same thing happen to me I had the same cup with two different price tags (one was clearance the other regular). The salesperson told me that the reason that happens is because the items came into the store at different times so they have different SKU’s and the store is trying to get rid of the older one.
The yellow tags are a special clearance cycle done to force out seasonal items to make room for new merchandise in the next season done twice a year. The markdowns on those items continue until they go out the door. Amazing time to buy. Also, items go on clearance based off of how long they are in store, not the item itself. The exact same item could come in months apart. That’s how one shirt can be priced at full while another is a red ticket clearance item. The number in the square indicates the month the merch arrived (2 year cycle so # goes up to 24). The example in the video might be a missed markdown as they both came in the same month. Just be understanding with the employees if they can’t price match the exact same item because one came in the store yesterday and the clearance item has been on the rack for over a two months.
We used to have a nice TJMaxx in Oxnard about a 50 mile drive from my house in Goleta, just north of Santa Barbara, CA. They moved a little closer but still in Oxnard. The newer store is a hot mess. BUT, there is a Home Goods minutes from the house and we love it. It’s a fun family activity to shop there.
In metro west Boston a lot of the tj maxx stores have a runway section - though the closer you get to the city of Boston the larger the section is. There was a great one in their Cambridge Ma store right off of route 2, but I haven’t been there in ages so couldn’t vouch for it today.
Great!! I always wondered when they reduced the prices. So true about bedding. I bought a set that I loved. Went back the very next day and they were gone. Not only at that store but 2 other stores. Better to buy it and take it back than not buying it in the first place.
i will say with “haggling” the prices, we actually do have a price chart to go by that tells us how much we are allowed to take off of a given item based on if it is damaged it a mismate, and at my store items with “as is” on it are non-negotiable
I ❤️ TJ Maxx, I live in Australia Qld, I love the ornament glass section, really cheap and unique, gorgeous products and cheaper than second hand stores such as st Vincent de Paul, red Cross etc. I love the uniqueness and great prices and good quality products for the price.
The cashier managers at local stores explained to me that discrepancies in pricing of identical items is usually due to having received them at different dates. They didn’t mention different sources. That’s good to know.
I buy most of my clothing at TJMax. I’ve been lucky with bedding too. It’s great for kitchen items. I have learned to be careful not to buy too much. For example, the clothing is so inexpensive I have too many t-shirts. It’s a fast fashion danger zone. When I was buying clothes for an Alaskan trip I found things much cheaper than sporting goods stores and just as good. They also have great stocking stuffers.
I used to work in T.J. Maxx, and I want to clarify something. Bargaining: you can bargain ANY ITEM in the store as long as it has some type of imperfection. HOWEVER - if you see a manually written "as is" sign on it, T.J. Maxx will not let you bargain. They usually write "as is" to indicate to themselves and the storeworkers that that's the lowest price that particular item will go for.
Except jewelry. You can’t bargain jewelry because it has to go back to the vendor; TJMaxx doesn’t mark down imperfections in jewelry They only do the monthly jewelry markdown for old items and mismates
I don't get out to shop anymore but I used to love TJMaxx. I still have a top that is my favorite, I don't care how old it is. They had some of the most interesting and different home decor & kids clothes. I could always find something for anyone while shopping for gifts.
@@OrangeCat939 I go everyday. I was always told delivery trucks don't come on Mondays or weekends. I find the best days (for makeup & beauty at least) are Wed & Thurs late afternoon.
Not "haggling" in NJ stores. If a red tag is on the item they will tell you that is the reason it has a red tag. I WORK ON WEEKENDS and gladly discovered Tuesdays and Mondays there is few people out shopping with the added benefit of finding the clearance section freshly restocked. Thanks for this informative video.
Yes, we have the runway section in Chicago. And in certain neighborhoods of the city the clothes, handbags, and shoes are clearly more fashionable or upscale. If I want a purse for instance I only visit certain TJMaxx or Marshalls stores.
I'm reminded of an old trick when Circuit City was still around. Their website often had lower prices than the store and they would price match their own site so I would always check the site before buying anything at the store.
What he said about bedding is true. I bought what was advertised as a complete set only to open later and there were no sheets. Yet it indicated the sheets were included. Good video
In my experience with pricing error; I was informed by management that when an item comes in to store at different times prices will vary. Since items have different SKU numbers and arrived at different times even though same item I was not able to get both items at the lower price.
Here in Charlotte- we don’t have much runway at regular prices but hit the clearance section *esp dresses* and you may be in luck! I’ve had 3 HUGE wins recently.
The compare price is what it sells for at competitors stores .. sometimes it’s a bit higher , usually tax is factored on compare price . I worked for both Homegoods & Tjmaxx for years … I’ve gotten some of the greatest deals ever ! As far as getting lower price , that’s usually up to managers , as a rule Tjmaxx does not price match .. we aren’t Walmart . You can try & ask but the most you’ll get is an additional 10% .
I am from Vancouver, Canada. Ross is my favourite discount department store. I used to love going shopping there when the border was open. Can you please do a video for ROSS.
Bridgewater TJ Maxx has the Runway designer clothes and accessories. A number of NewJerseyTJ Maxx carry designer shoes and accessories in a case in the jewelry section. I do like Marshals, Home Goods and TJ's bedding. It is my go to place for all my needs. I just bought two pillows recently.

Clearance dept always for me.
Wow 😳, I didn't know online clearance for TJ Maxx was better. Going to check it out! Thanks Matt!
Are the secrets same for Marshall’s and Burlington ?
I always shop the week after major shopping holidays for the new markdowns. More to choose from/more stock, great clearance prices. And no matter the time of year, I always browse the purse isles. Never pay full price for a name brand handbag!
Great video, I'm doing videos like this uploaded a new video last night
As a worker at a TjMaxx, I can tell you that our markdowns are usually done in order of what arrives to us in our shipments. So we could have one shirt on clearance and an identical one at regular price because it came to us on a later shipment sold to us by the same vendor. My store only goes by this system and often refuses to manually adjust the price if our system doesn’t automatically mark it down, so approaching a cashier about a price discrepancy may not result in getting the clearance price you see. That decision is up to the discretion of the supervisor on duty though, so it doesn’t hurt to ask
Thanks for sharing your thoughts my dear.
I just found this out on some deodorant. 😆 They told me the same thing. I thought it was so bizarre, but bought them anyway.
Thank you Autumn.
my store is the same way!!
why did they stop layaway? make them bring it back!!
Best deal? I actually found my husband at TJMaxx! We met while working together in a store in MA. We've been married 28 years. My kids call it the mothership. So now when an associate at checkout asks if we found what we were looking for, we have a good laugh and tell them. : )
Edit: Aww thanks for the sweet responses. You are all great. I guess I should add that we have EIGHT kids. : )
What an amazing story Jeannie! Wishing goi and your husband a lifetime of love and happiness
This is an adorable story ♥️
Thats an amazing story!
Congratulations to you both! I wish many more healthy, happy, and loving years together.
Thank you for sharing your story!!!
Aww so cute ❤ what a lovely story 😁
Great information, thanks for sharing.
Excellent tips thank you so much!!
Daily shipments?? Omg!!
I used to work at TJMaxx, it was like working at a higher end scavenger hunt. I still love going in to find things-especially for special occasions. Great list!
Great video! As a former TJ Maxx manager, I’ll add my two cents:
• Despite popular belief, the yellow ticket isn’t necessarily the final price.
Thank you for the tip!! 🥰
Or can spend that time befriending a rich guy instead and don’t have to shop for those triple markdowns.

I feel for you. I shop TJMAXX but work retail and ppl always be trying to haggle. You can try to haggle but you should understand that the priced marked is the intended price unless other advertised by the store. We're not a bazaar or flea market shoppers.🤣

@@pinkysistamb exactly
The “pricing errors” also come from the fact that if we get multiple of one item but at different times they’ll basically “time out” and it’ll clearance for being there too long vs it’s “newer” version. I asked about this a lot when I first started at Marshall’s “why is this one on clearance but the same thing over here isn’t?” It’s based on when they come into the store :)
Michigan here. I've never seen a yellow or purple tag. Thanks for all this info! Super.
This is great! Thank you!
Marshall’s cashier for 5 years same thing goes 😄
thank you for saying this
My tjx companies always give tax back no matter if regardless if there is a receipt or not or the date of the purchase .
Thank you! The information u give is helpful.
I live in the middle of nowhere Kansas, and the day that they opened a TJ M in Garden City, KS was one of the happiest day in my life.
I totally understand that feeling! 👍Love that place! Hope yours also came with an attached Home Goods!
😁
I was explained by the corporation that they bid on their merchandise from pallets that have been put on auction among several stores including Ross, Burlington etc. a lot of their merchandise still have labels from places like Macy’s, Dillards and I’ve seen Nordstrom and Neiman tags too. Some of these stuff were over manufactured for theses stores and ended up in auction. Explained by the corporation in a study I had to do.
Thanks for your comment!! 😊

That is Correct. I worked for the TJX company , all TJmaxx, Marshalls and Marshalls & HomeGoods combo stores 7years.
@@HM-he8fb do you have any great insider secrets for any of those stores? Would love to make a follow up video on home goods or Marshall’s
Also they are paid for by weight. So much per pound
That was always my understanding as well.
This makes more sense, thank you
It seems like most of the heavily discounted brand items are just last season's leftovers.
As a former employee of TJ Maxx, most of what this man is saying is true!❤
Regarding the bonus tip, Tj Maxx will also usually get the same product sent at different times, especially if it is popular like the Nike shirt. When I worked there, the older product would get marked down first, and you can tell which one is older by the number in the square at the top.
Yes! I currently work there, and I always feel bad when I have to tell customers that I can’t lower the price for this exact reason.
After the delivery, 6 week is the time for the first markdowns ( 5 years ago, I do not know how it works now)
I used to work for TJMAXX for about 4 years.
Jewelry returns are very strict with the 30 day policy, but they’ll usually let it go if it’s a day or two late, but more than 2 months is a no-no
Great info, thanks
I just came to say im obsessed with TJ Maxx. Almost everything in my house is from there. I love their kitchen stuff
They market themselves as designer discount store. It’s mostly high street brands which are cheaper during sales. Biggest disappointment.
Could you be more specific? Please & Thank you.
Yep, customers are greedy. They don't understand that you already marked it down that is why it's in clearance.
Back in the day I remember getting lower prices but greedy people ruined it
Pro tip: Utilize a price compare app and your google lens. I save tons because I unashamedly will scan bar codes and take pics to ensure I'm getting the best deal. I am unashamed because retailers are unashamed at all the tricks they try to pull. 😁
Great tip Joanna!!
What price compare app do you recommend? And what is google lens, please? Thanks very much!
Thank you.
@@susanroy4540 I have the same questions...
Please let us know the price compare app you are referring to. Thanks!
Idk why, but TJ’s, Marshall’s & Home Goods don’t have the same great stuff they used to. I still check them out, but now usually leave with nothing! 😢
Same, particularly nice clothing in small sizes. Either the sizing is way off, or there just isn't anything decent available.
Thank you
Thank you! I’ve heard this knockoff myth many times
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I worked in garment industry. Everything is a knockoff.
@ we are very careful with intellectual property. Knockoffs are knockoffs.

What I love is finding actual designer items where the “compare” price is significantly below the actual list price. This happens a lot. Just got a $350 BCBG winter coat on clearance for $60.
I did too!!!
Thank you for the info. Yeah that's so greedy.
So sorry for the rude people
😮😮😮😮😮
Thank you for sharing.

Mix and match bedding is just fine with lots of people. You can easily coordinate pieces from various lines by focusing on finding contrasting or complimentary tones, hues, and materials rather than fixating on having that perfectly

Exactly.

I currently work at tjmaxx and we get new items everyday besides Sunday. The weekend is just trash period because the line is crazy long and the store is super cluttered with people and displaced product.
"I really like you". Awwww, we really like you too buddy! Thanks for bringing us all the good deals.
We have a runway in Farmington Hills Michigan on orchard lake.
I’m in DC and I see a lot of those runway sections. The audacity of them thinking I’d pay nearly 1k for a piece tho.. 🤣 the whole reason I’m there is bc I’m broke in the first place!
Hahaha, exactly!
I totally agree. Ridiculous pricing
Awesome comment!!! I couldn’t have said it better myself.
@@crystalhoffman7025 Agreed!
Is the makeup, bath products pretty good quality?
So important to know that! and I agree, clearance at the actual store is generally cheaper.
" I was gonna say run for the exit but that would be shop lifting!" 😆🤣
😄😄
😂😂
I was actually in a TJ maxx and some guy was picking up at least 4 Dooney and bourke handbags while talking on the phone about the colors, next thing I see him walking out the door with all of them! The getaway car was right out the door! Unbelievable
The best deals I've gotten from any of their related families of stores is when there's no price tag on something. They ask you to find anything similar in the store (say a pot by a different brand but of a similar size). Then, you take both to the register, and they suggest a price (always lower) and make a tag for the item. Note: Do not abuse this, but it's a great deal when possible.
This is very true, unless you happen to get a cashier that also works the floor and knows his/her stuff. Then you will get the correct price.
I don’t think the price would always be lower, most of the time it would be the same price, not a different one…. That’s why they find a similar item to price match
Love the pink Matt, looks good on you.
My experience too 😊
Tjmaxx is my favorite store and close to where live , I go N shop more often than I should but I know most of the employees by shopping there and even my pet loves the store, thank you for the tips!
I don't buy a ton of things at TJMaxx, but generally know that I'm getting a great deal on those things I do purchase. Thanks, Matt!
Most likely. I used to do this.
@@monihernandez28 You think those stores care if you are disadvantaged? Obviously not. The purpose of those stores is to MAKE MONEY. Nothing more nothing less. Don't be so naive.
I must keep myself out of TJ because I ALWAYS find a "deal" there!
I worked in the stockroom, on the trucks, I had a stacked of merchandise everyday put aside, my paycheck was spent and more by the end of the week, i was like a kid in a candy store, can’t beat there prices, every time I opened a box it like Christmas, you never know what’s in them
😄
"AS IS" is "final pricing" no more reductions per company policy.
Yes-I worker at TJ for a while and it was company policy to not mark down anything already on clearance. Ppl would get written up for it!
@ I’m sure his career w tj was short lived as well
Chicago, Countryside Il, great TJmaxx
We used to have a nice TJMaxx in Oxnard about a 50 mile drive from my house in Goleta, just north of Santa Barbara, CA. They moved a little closer but still in Oxnard. The newer store is a hot mess. BUT, there is a Home Goods minutes from the house and we love it. It’s a fun family activity to shop there.
Matt did a poll and he followed through. He's good at his job!!
I try my best!! I just want to make sure I keep making the videos you want to watch
The BEST!!
Thank you! I learned something that I didn’t know….the brand name clothing licensing thing, wow!
Yeah
Hi Matt, Thanks for the secrets! Can you please also make a video on Ross Dress for Less and Burlington Coat Factory?
In metro west Boston a lot of the tj maxx stores have a runway section - though the closer you get to the city of Boston the larger the section is. There was a great one in their Cambridge Ma store right off of route 2, but I haven’t been there in ages so couldn’t vouch for it today.
T.J.Maxx is one of my favorite stores! Thanks for all the tips. I normally go in on the weekends but now I’ll go during the week. 👍🏽👍🏽
I worked at Burlington. Once a damaged item had the red tag on it, there was no haggling allowed.
I have no idea what he is talking about. I've worked at two different stores. We don't do haggling
This was interesting especially time TJ made clothes! The tags are good to know as well.
You can’t bargain jewelry because it has to go back to the vendor; TJMaxx doesn’t mark down imperfections in jewelry
They only do the monthly jewelry markdown for old items and mismates
I live in Vegas and the 3 TjMaxx locations I go to, all have a runway section. Your TjMaxx looks much cleaner and organized tho 😅
Lucky 🍀
Which locations ?
What!? What locations?!
Yes I just moved here to Vegas too
Oohh which ones
“Runway” shopping has been my thing for 20+ years up here in Massachusetts. We have several in and out of Boston.
I don't get out to shop anymore but I used to love TJMaxx. I still have a top that is my favorite, I don't care how old it is. They had some of the most interesting and different home decor & kids clothes. I could always find something for anyone while shopping for gifts.
LOVE TJ Maxx. For my local store, Thursdays seem to be the best days, at least for the stuff I'm looking for. Thanks for the info.
Good tip Michelle!
And Wednesday at mine! Monday is the worst!
@@OrangeCat939 I go everyday. I was always told delivery trucks don't come on Mondays or weekends. I find the best days (for makeup & beauty at least) are Wed & Thurs late afternoon.
I'm obsessed with TJMAXX. My skincare, hyaluronic acids, retinol serums, peptide serums etc are all from there.
You can't beat the ordinary prices, but tj basically has the same thing and it's right there 🥰
Sunscreen too. Shisheido SPF and other high end brands (depending on your TJMaxx location)
I love shopping at TJ Max but we don't have one in my city. I appreciate the insight so that when I do see one, I'll be able to shop wisely.
Target does this too. Always check the online price. Ask for a price match. It can be several dollars less
Great tip!! Lots of stores have different prices online vs in store. Who knew?!
Much respect ! He asked what store to do next and ACTUALLY went there #mvp
Excellent info! I’m a TJMaxx addict and I STILL learned some extremely useful tips. Thank you and please keep your videos coming!!
What he said about bedding is true. I bought what was advertised as a complete set only to open later and there were no sheets. Yet it indicated the sheets were included. Good video
We have a few of the Runways in Toronto, Canada. One is downtown and the another is in midtown. There are others but those are the ones go to most.
I just found out about their pet selection last year. I LUV IT!
In my experience with pricing error; I was informed by management that when an item comes in to store at different times prices will vary. Since items have different SKU numbers and arrived at different times even though same item I was not able to get both items at the lower price.
I love TJ Maxx. They have great prices!
Love your videos! Please do one of these insider shopping secrets videos for Ross or Burlington if you have one in your area!
Love those stores!!
Can you also do a Marshalls vs Ross vs Nordstrom rack video.. :)
Here’s the gist: real brands for cheap vs knock offs for very cheap vs real brands for kinda discounted
...this retail store is a great place to save if you have time + patience. Great video. 😊
