- Now that we’re a couple of weeks past the finale of Better Call Saul, we can look back on it in full context to unpack its meaning. In this video, I look at the journey which turned Jimmy McGill into Saul Goodman and the moment which turned him back.

Gene had a good thing going, He was climbing the corporate ladder at Cinnabon and hanging out with his security buddies talking sports. But Nooooooo, Saul and his ego had to go and blow it all up.
Gene was living a paranoid existence, trapped in the past looking at his old tapes with all his unresolved baggage. Deep down, he wanted to get caught.

It's magnificent how consistent Jimmy/Saul is written and kept throughout all 6 seasons. This is what you get when the writers truly and wholeheartedly understand and care about what they're doing.
Even when he becomes totally different characters in Saul and Gene, you see the through line in them all. Perfect blend of writers who are more than just competent, intelligent. And real actors who understand their craft and become the role onscreen.
HBO need to hire Vince Giligan and Peter Gould to rewrite season 8 of Game of Thrones. Even if they don’t film it, it would be incredible to just know how amazing it could have been.

Everyone seems to forget Gene telling Kim to confess if she feels so bad when she told him to turn himself in (when he called her)
This is why Kims confession resonates so much with him the final episode, he didn’t think she’d do it.
Doesn't change the fact they should've kept him in character and burned Kim for some ice cream. Instead he what, throws his whole life away for his ex who left his ass?

Yeah the phone call definitely pushed her over the top, but also because now she knew Gus, Mike + Lalo were all dead, leaving it safe (-ish) to finally own up

@@Digger-Nick he had to choose between life imprisoned in a jail or life imprisoned in the Saul Goodman persona, never having another chance to face his mistakes and wrongdoings. There are different kinds of prisons
6:14 I really loved Walt's portrayal in the series finale. It showcased all of his traits in one scene. His obsessive, overly analytical thinking(which ironically often leads to comical buffoonery), his pompous attitude and hubris. Him being the one to see through the Time Travel framing of Saul's question being about regrets and then getting irritated about it is about as Walt as Walt can get lol. He's almost presented as a mad scientist and you see how eccentric he is in how he appears almost insulted by the very thought of even entertaining the idea of Time Travel lol. Also given the rather bleak time frame the story and characters are in at this point of the show, it's nice to see Walt in a more light hearted and comical portrayal similar to the way he was in earlier seasons.

I actually liked Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad. In BB Walter White was such a despicable character, he had no redeeming qualities and I was hoping he was going to get killed in a horrible fashion. In BCS I liked Jimmy, I put him in my he's a good guy who does bad things category. I loved how he FINALLY stood up at the end and accepted responsibility for his actions. Total redemption in my mind.
Well I think one redeeming quality Walter White had is that he was loyal to Jesse throughout the series. That's the only thing that he had and the only thing he even could partially redeem at the end.
@@GrandElemental I do agree with you on that point. What is funny is if I was in Walter Whites shoes I would have run over Jesse instead of the two drug dealers and shot him. Being former military the chain of command is sacred and Jesse broke it and I would have killed him myself for it. I vouched for him so it would be my responsibility to resolve the situation.

tbh Walter didn't feel despicable until Season 5. Up until the end of Season 4, I could completely sympathise with all of his choices (ofc excluding poisoning Brock).
@@noahlibra The moment he went into remission was when he needed to stop all his criminal activity. When he didn't he was just a despicable scumbag peddling poison for money, the lowest form of human life on the planet.
I always thought the reason Gene stayed in the house was because he had to steal more things to get suspicion off the identity theft. Once he broke the door window, if nothing was missing, the cops would investigate the financial info. Which would lead to them questioning Gene. If he steals more stuff, it’s just a simple robbery
That’s the more logical reason yes, but there’s no reason he should make himself a drink and float around the bedroom, he could’ve just stolen a watch and a few valuables quickly. He’s definitely savoring the moment

Another key moment in this season is in episode 12, Waterworks, when Jimmy calls Kim after 6 years of not speaking to eachother. At that point, they are both living lives they don't care about - Jimmy at Cinnabon and Kim in the water irrigation company being a brunette that only says "yes" and "maybe" and never speaks up her mind. They don't speak much but they both know that they are both trying to numb their pain by just waiting to forget everything while realizing it will never work. In fact, they both tell eachother that they should turn themselves in - which is what they both end up doing - so they can "stop waisting their lives". They are looking for redemption and scenes where you see them finally be able to cry means that they are finally progressing in their grieving journeys.
I like to think that on the final scene Kim has the gun in the holster, but makes the decision not to pull it out.

@@luluna5228 him growing into a better person necessarily meant he had to face what he had done. If his plan to weasel out the majority of the consequences had worked out, he would have fallen back into his old patterns and would have just hurt more people again.

The ending wasn't just a bittersweet one, it was the only good ending possible for Jimmy. It was him coming to the realization that whatever life he would have left would be meaningless if he didn't come to terms with what he did, and that he needed to confess to Kim not because he wanted forgiveness, but because he needed her to hear the truth. And so he threw away his freedom not only for Kim's sake but also his own, because he knew that otherwise he would remain trapped in a prison of his own making.
If you're a true fan of the universe you never get tired of reviews on BB or BCS.
If you watch Breaking Bad all the way through El Camino, then Better Call Saul, you will see one of the greatest improvements in cinematography ever! The sheer beauty of BCS's visuals is worth the price of admission

I loved, among other things, that kind of "Dr. Strangelove" direction of photography look in the where Marie, Hank's widow, arrives. The photography in those last episodes was great, not to mention the storytelling structure.
I think the Gene timeline should be referred to as "Breaking Good."

Also, Jimmy escaping prison time was the catalyst for everything!
(Chuck saving Jimmy from jail time after he pooped on a car created both Jimmy's resolve to make his brother proud and Chuck's secret disgust with him becoming a lawyer)
It feels so fitting that he ends up there.
As someone who just finished BCS, I love your analysis. This really helps me get a better understanding of Jimmy's character.

I don't think Jimmy thought they were actually gonna help him with his insurance bc he had already called them I think. He went there planning on hurting Chuck
That was how I read it initially as well. Can’t remember how/why I changed my mind, other than I think the common interpretation is that Jimmy had the idea on the spot (and I have a vague recollection that one of the writers cleared this up). I can definitely see it either way though and I think both ways ultimately get to the same point
If you rewatch the scene, he decides to screw Chuck over when he sees how high his new premiums are.
@@TheKrigeron I think he already knew the premiums were high when he called them but maybe he didn't know he couldn't get it cancelled. I still thought he was too smart to not know trying to get it cancelled was a big ask, I saw that as his excuse to go there and not actually why he went
Really looking forward to your review on Breaking Bad. Your videos on BBS were very thoughtful and insightful, it makes me realize the details and intentions in the show that I would otherwise have missed. I'd also like to know about how and why you guys started this channel. You guys seem like a real experts in understanding storytelling, wondering how you guys got to this space. Kudos!
THe whole issue of Jimmy’s tipping off the insurance company has been vastly overstated. The insurance company would have found out about Chuck’s meltdown as part of their due diligence. It was a matter of public record. There was nothing illegal about what Jimmy did. How Jimmy felt about it is another story.
I don’t really see how it’s “overstated”. I think the look on Jimmy’s face when Howard says it says all you need to know. The writers clearly thought it was important. Yes they probably would have found out about it. But Jimmy twisted the knife, made sure they knew about it. Because you can argue “oh he swapped the numbers for Kim, she deserved Mesa Verde” and “Chuck’s ego is what caused the chicanery meltdown, he started the fight trying to get Jimmy disbarred, he HAD to fight back”. Because there’s no excuse, no reason, no personal benefit for what he did with the insurance, it was pure evil.

No, your claim to be the arbitrator of subjective matters doesn't stand at all. :) Your definition of "evil" is not everyone else's, your reasoning is not everyone else's, your morality is not everyone else's, and most importantly, your way of seeing things aren't "how it is" just because you said so. I'd suggest therapy for narcissism before this attitude spirals out of control.
PS if you told practically anyone your definition of "pure evil" was "telling the insurance company a fact" they'd laugh at you. Chuck's own morality would say the laws and regulations are there to be respected, chuck was found mentally ill in the court of law, and the laws and regulations say he must pay more insurance to cover his mental illness. Regardless of if jimmy off-handedly commented on it or not it was going to happen or Chuck was betraying his very own morality and trying to slip the consequences of the law like "slippin' jimmy." who he despised so much he sunk himself trying to stop from succeeding. Or was Chuck meant to be immune from "the law"? Isn't chuck twisting the morality of "the law" by trying to avoid the regulations put in place? The entire company knew he was severely mentally ill yet they were allowing him to handle situations that can change peoples lives forever.
All morality is subjective. You can have your opinion on it though okay sweetie? Have a nice day. Get that narcissism checked out.
@@sondosoft4603 lol here's a good excuse/reason for you: if a named partner at a law firm which handles massive issues that change the course of people's lives, a partner who was directly involved in things such as Mesa Verde or Sandpiper, has a mental illness, and has exhibited erratic behaviour in a public setting which is on court record, then the stakeholders should know about it. There is an ethical duty to tell them. The malpractice insurance company is certainly a stakeholder. Ironically, telling them is a Chuck move: it may fuck over your enemy, but it's totally legal, and from an ethical point of view, it's arguably responsible.
Would love to see a Kim series. More flash backs and back stories of her as a kid escaping that horrible relationship with her mother. Just imagine all the scams they pulled!

I think there's an excellent chance Jimmy only serves 25 years or less and gets out on parole for good behavior. Certainly with Kim's help.
But even if he got out, what life would he be coming back to. He'd be at least 70 years when he got out. Old, weak and penniless. No family or kids to love or care for him. Plus his rap sheet means he's unemployable.
I'd prefer he died in prison. He bakes like he did at Cinnabon and he's a celebrity there.

The coloured storyline with Nacho, Mike, Lalo, Howard and Gus felt really rushed. After the first half of season 6 and the cliffhanger, I was a bit underwhelmed by the pace in which Lalo was written off and the sudden break-up between Jimmy and Kim. Maybe I was expecting Lalo (and therefore in way also Jimmy) having a hand in Kim's death, but still I feel they could have properly ended that storyline. Then the sudden change of pace in the b&w storyline with Gene, Marion and Jeff would not have been so confusing. After seeing this video, I feel a bit more content about the ending, but Better Call Saul was always a show with two storylines. The ending of the main storyline was just so... unexpected and sudden.
Great video! I would love for you to do an analysis on the ending with Kim's perspective, considering your last video about her morals and where would they take her. You also mentioned in that video that scamming was a means to an end mostly for Jimmy but that Kim got a thrill out of the scam itself and I wonder if those urges won't come back to her now that she's coming out of her shell again.

Thats pretty much what I got out of the ending. Jimmy knows if he gets away again (although 7 years isn't such a short time), he would just continue his destructive path... also he realizes how much damage he did to the one person he really cares about (except for himself). Kim would be pretty much out of his life for good if he continues like that, so his redemption makes perfect sense and the argument it is out of character... well that's pretty much the point, he pretty much assasinates his character, well the toxic part of it
Considering what he has been part of and what he directly made possible (even when we talk exclusively about WW, not Hamlin or his direct links to the cartel for example) 7 years are absolutely nothing and will not repent anyone in this position. It's an extremely short time for basically being the right hand man of the most notorious drug kingpin in (fictional) US history.
I personally believe that Jimmy didn't "assassinate" the "toxic" (I would call it destructive, but that semantics) part of his character. I honestly believe it's too late for that. But he finally let Jimmy talk the wheel again and actively decided to take responsibility. You can tell me what you want, but that Prison is gonna con'ned day in day out for the next 7 decades lol

As a person who watched one too many BcS % BB video essays, I can say this is the best Jimmy McGill video essay I have seen yet. 👏👏
I was really late to watching BB and BCS, but watching saul and kim look at each other through the prison gate as kim was leaving, that was the first time ive cried watching any kind of media in a long time.
Jimmy wanted to get caught. He saw the signs, took note and ignored them. The second he decided to roll the cancer patient, it became clear... Jimmy had to prove to himself that this is a fair and just world, where bad people are punished. It is why many become lawyers in the first place. Jimmy had to show the system how deeply flawed it was. He illustrated that his sentence could be whittled down to a meager 7 years, then as if to give the justice system the finger for not going at him hard enough, he tanked the deal and took it on the chin for a sentence he felt was more commensurate with the severity of his crimes. He lost his freedom but gained his dignity and a certain reputation in the yard. He now knows who he is and is at peace with it.
This video is spot on, well done, maybe the best BCS video I've seen. 👍

Better call Saul shows you can have your cake, eat it and share it with a friend. Breaking bad main character dies. Al Camino main character gets away with it all and better call Saul charter faces consequences for his actions.
16:16 i took the significance of the writing was that it reminded him of Bill Oakley since he thought bill was gay a few episodes ago and the writing says, well, yeah. That’s why he started laughing
I think Marie also played a big role in his realization. He sat face to face with the wife of one his victims, but Hank’s murder couldn’t be justified like Howard’s or Chuck’s deaths could. The best he could do was to claim that he was also a victim of Heisenberg, but they obviously didn’t believe him.
After all, it was Saul's idea to send Hank to Belize in the first place.

So, apparently most states allow a lawyer that has gained a criminal record to practice the law again after a period of being barred from doing so (like 5 years or something). That doesn't seem just to me, but not my call. In any case, it seems there should be no legal impediment to Kim actually practicing law again. I think there's hope for the two of them yet. It won't be easy, but "all things are possible, if you'll only believe."

The watch that Walter is wearing in the flashback scene with Saul, is that the same watch he left on top of the payphone in the final episode of Breaking Bad?
Yep! Same watch. Apparently in the flash forward earlier in the season, Walt didn’t have a watch… so they made sure to show him leaving it behind to explain away the continuity error hah

This was very well done!
Saul is the best example of a pathological liar. This might be his defense mechanism of him having a low self-esteem. He also wants acceptance of other people most specially his own brother. And his brother not giving him the recognition that he wants from him is envious of the love that their mother and other people had for Jimmy. Jimmy is really good at people and making other people feel jolly. They are brothers who have behavioral issues that were unresolved. These I think are the root cause of all of it.

I remember Bill Oakley’s actor said something of a Kim spinoff but I can’t really see that in one of your videos. I feel like they’ve said as much as they could say about her as she was one of the most important characters in the show, not like Saul who was somewhat minor in bb.
My impression from all the interviews is that Gould and Gilligan want to try some new things but are open to revisiting this world at some point. If I had to put bets down, I’d say we’ll see something new in the BB universe within the next decade

Yes the rumors are true! On the podcast channel / saulcast, we'll chronicle the rewatch there. We'll probably do about one episode per season: part recap, part reminiscing, part analysis, part observing how our viewing changes after Saul, etc. Still figuring out the schedule / when exactly it'll happen, but it'll happen soon.

I think all of the most important characters ended exactly where they should've;
-Walter White killed his soul and then everything he loved and died alone but he did go out on his own terms.
-Jesse Pinkman never lost his soul and eventually managed to find his way to freedom, both freedom from the police and freedom from the drug life.
-Saul Goodman hid his soul and then found it again by taking his punishment and going to jail.
One ends up dead, one ends up free, one ends up in prison.
Ok, now do a deep dive analysis of the final episode of Slippin' Jimmy! Truly a modern masterpiece

I do see a Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde complex with Jimmy/Saul.
I'm referring to all the faces he has.....as we all have to different situations....
Some may face the nature of the situation honestly, and others dishonestly.

So I guess Jimmy is just human...flaws and all.....and we get to see what mistakes happen along the way as the viewers...
Some might get lost...as the kids say nowadays...."get lost in the sauce"...and some choose differently....
But we are perfectly imperfect, formed by our own experiences...from a young age to teenage years to adulthood....
Jimmy was just following his own philosophy....and we all do the same... in the end, we all become philosophers
But, we should all try to live the best life we can.....even if it means facing our consequences/karma.....
without much fear....with confidence...and with acceptance....

I could never imagine those possibilities and hope. However, this is the only "good" thing the future brought. People sharing their interpretation of the "programming". I thought for a very long time only l saw it. If we all watched the same thing, received the same message why is the World the way it is today? I will miss this show.

So for me in that scene Jimmy just coulnd't bring himself to kill an elderly women (he was for a time active in elder law) thats why he didnt do it
They also did a lot of good many clients got a class legal defense .maybe he will help others from inside
If a man has come to a position to save his soul, then it is about as happy an ending as Saul / Gene / Jimmy deserved.

Probably Marion bails him out or he sits in jail until his case is resolved (like Gene said, Jeff wasn’t in possession of any of the stolen goods so most likely he’ll be let go). Good Ol’ Jeffy lives to see another day!
The real tragedy of better call Saul is not knowing what the fuck happens to Jeff? Is he still lock up did he get out we will never find out.
Based on what Saul says, I think we can safely say Jeff gets off without any charges (he didn’t have position of any of the stolen items, etc). I like to think that after such a stressful experience, he decides to stay on the straight and narrow

I truly don’t think so. He already got his sentences reduced and if it weren’t for Kim confessing to Cheryl, he could’ve used Howard’s death to reduce it even further. Without Kim, I think it’d take a lot more for him to change his ways.
